Question from Bdas.in (16:23, 19 February 2024)

Hi. Can you please review this draft? And, guide me to improve it before submitting and avoiding rejection. Thanks in Advance.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bdas.in/sandbox --Bhajan Das (talk) 16:23, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

Bdas.in Sorry for not responding sooner— it’s been a very chaotic week for me, and I haven’t been able to sit down for long enough to look through the draft. I’ve just gone over it, and here are some of my thoughts to get you started:
  • The biography section could use more references, as the current source doesn’t back up all of the information in that section. Also, that source appears to be affiliated with Jyoti because the Woman Made Gallery site lists her as a member.
  • You’ve done a good job finding some third-party sources for ‘Exhibitions’ (especially the Hindustan Times), so if they talk about Jyoti’s life, you might be able to use them to better source the biography section.
  • ‘Career’, along with lacking references, currently sounds somewhat promotional in tone, such as ‘artistic repertoire’ and ‘offering fresh perspectives’. I recommend reworking the wording here (as well as checking over the rest of the article), then merging this section with the one below it. ◇HelenDegenerate21:20, 24 February 2024 (UTC)

User talk:2600:1700:3170:8A80:A53E:24CB:C239:5D71

Hi Ms Degenerate. I am wondering why you removed a number of my edits. You have provided no good reason, just your vague opinion that they did "not appear to be constructive." This is subjective and lacking any logic or reason. You further chose to patronise me with comments like "use you sandbox if you wish to experiment." I certainly cannot assume good faith. There were a number of reasons why I made these edits. Please explain your thinking. Thank you. David David Highfield (talk) 18:40, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi David, Helen asked me to look at this because she cannot see the deleted revisions. I'll be honest, I'm not entirely sure why you are asking here about those IP edits, as they had nothing to do with you, unless you are admitting to putting poop jokes on the article in addition to the copyrights. If the IP was not you, then there really isn't anything to explain, especially since Helen only reverted the IP and only posted on their talk page (not yours). Since you re-added the copyrighted content originally removed by Diannaa after she left you this note you seem to already know why your edits were reverted. Please feel free to indicate where I have missed something if that is the case. Primefac (talk) 19:41, 21 February 2024 (UTC) (talk page stalker)
OK. A number of my edits have been removed. I will dig deeper to establish why and when this happened. Thank you. David David Highfield (talk) 00:09, 22 February 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question from INTREPID808 (03:16, 4 March 2024)

Aloha! I am new here and want to write an entry about hip-hop in Hawaiʻi. I have been navigating with new eyes now that I am not simply consuming info. When I looked up Hip Hop Jam I was met with a redirect to Indiggo, a pop group. Why does that happen? --INTREPID808 (talk) 03:16, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi INTREPID808! Welcome to Wikipedia! Sometimes we create redirects because a topic isn’t notable enough for a standalone article, so we redirect it to somewhere that does cover the topic. An example of this would be Rose Tint My World, which redirects to The Rocky Horror Picture Show (soundtrack), which covers all of the songs in the RHPS film.
In this instance,’Hip Hop Jam’ currently leads to Indiggo because it’s the name of one of their singles (and that single likely doesn’t have enough coverage to meet the notability guidelines). Are you looking to create an article about something else named ‘Hip Hop Jam’? ◇HelenDegenerate04:12, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from LionPizzaChicken (21:29, 4 March 2024)

What are the rules on citations --LionPizzaChicken (talk) 21:29, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

Hello LionPizzaChicken! I’ve read both of your questions, and I’ll answer them both in this thread. Firstly, about content creation— this page will take you through the basic elements of an article, and the things to avoid when writing them. I recommend it a lot to newer editors because I was once one, and that probably was the page that helped me the most.
As for the rules on citations, I recommend checking out Help:Referencing for beginners. It provides resources depending on which editor you’re using (visual or source, doesn’t matter), as well as a quiz on reliable sources.
Let me know if you have any more questions; I’ll be happy to answer! ◇HelenDegenerate04:12, 7 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Jovangq (12:52, 5 April 2024)

how to make my own wiki page for my own podcast channel? --Jovangq (talk) 12:52, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

Hello Jovangq! Welcome to Wikipedia. While it’s not explicitly forbidden, writing articles with which you have a conflict of interest, such as your podcast, is discouraged. It’s much more difficult to adhere to Wikipedia’s policies on neutral point of view and verifiability.
Here’s what I would do: while working on your draft, declare the COI on your user page (there is a template for that). Then have a look through Help:Your first article— it has a lot of resources to help you identify what your draft needs to contain (and not contain) to get approved.
If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to ask! ◇HelenDegenerate15:04, 7 April 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 April newsletter

We are approaching the end of the 2024 WikiCup's second round, with a little over two weeks remaining. Currently, contestants must score at least 105 points to progress to the third round.

Our current top scorers are as follows:

Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May. Remember that only competitors with the top 32 scores will make it through to the third round. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.

Question from Solar~flare~double~helix (17:05, 24 April 2024)

hi there! my name is kevin bloom and i'm a musician and artist living in vermont, usa. i'm also an anti-racist activist and i've been documenting conservative hate radio on nationally syndicated radio across the usa. for example, racist host howie carr (nationally syndicated from wrko in boston) has a long running (10+ years) segment where he plays the "mexican hat dance" song and reads off crime reports involving people with hispanic sounding names and questions their immigration status. i'd like to add this to his page, but i'm unsure the best / most accurate way to go about this. do you have any advice? my best idea so far is to create a subsection called something like "alleged racism" and then list what he said on what date only using objective statements. is this the way? thank you so much! --Solar~flare~double~helix (talk) 17:05, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi Solar~flare~double~helix! Welcome to Wikipedia.
If his segment, namely any backlash against it, has been covered in reliable, third-party sources (here is a page that may help you identify some), it may merit a subsection called ‘Public reception’. Then you can discuss the response that his segment received, and how people reacted to it, attributing their exact words to the source.
However, if there isn’t any news coverage of how people feel, I wouldn’t bring it up in the article at all, especially not under a header such as ‘alleged racism’. Since Carr is a living person, we have to be extra cautious in how we write about him. That means avoiding coming to any conclusions in Wikipedia’s voice. I hope this helps :) ◇HelenDegenerate16:34, 27 April 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 May newsletter

The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.

The following scorers in Round 2 all scored more than 500 points:

The full scores for Round 2 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. They have conducted 165 featured article reviews, as well as 399 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 21 articles to featured topics and good topics.

How do you find stuff you feel the need to edit? --Gokstadok (talk) 08:58, 30 April 2024 (UTC)

Hello Gokstadok! There are a couple of ways that I find things to edit. The method that I use the most is by patrolling recent changes and looking for articles that pique my interest. Sometimes I also check the Task Centre, which has a list of things that I could get into, such as copy editing or adding categories. If you’re looking for a way to dip your toes in, I highly recommend the Task Centre. ◇HelenDegenerate02:59, 2 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from Bdas.in (01:14, 11 May 2024)

Hi Mentor. I need your help in publishing an article. Please have a look at this drafted article, and guide me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bdas.in/sandbox --Bhajan Das (talk) 01:14, 11 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Bdas.in! Sorry for the somewhat late response. I’m currently swamped at work and have to finish a project, but I just wanted to let you know that I’ve seen your message and intend to offer some feedback on your draft over the weekend. ◇HelenDegenerate02:19, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
@Bdas.in Okay, here are my thoughts. I think you’ve done a good job of finding sources to use and breaking the article into sections. What I would do now is skim through the whole thing and look for two things:
1) Any language that could potentially be construed as promotional in tone. For example, I’d suggest removing the word ‘prominently’ from the ‘Work in the Parliament of India’ section.
2) Sources that are closely affiliated with Jyoti, or that don’t have significant coverage of her. This would fall into the first category. If there are sources like these, see if you can replace them with third-party sources.
When you feel that the draft is ready to submit, you can either move it into mainspace yourself, or submit it for review by adding {{Userspace draft|date=May 2024}} to the top of your sandbox and following the directions there. ◇HelenDegenerate23:56, 19 May 2024 (UTC)

Hello, I have edited the names of the children of Justice Emile Francis Short and someone keeps removing our names. I am his youngest daughter. Please advice. thank you. --Jennyshort12 (talk) 17:50, 26 May 2024 (UTC)

Hello @Jennyshort12! Welcome to Wikipedia. The reason the names were removed is because of WP:BLPNAME, which says that we have to remove the names of non-notable family members unless a reliable source is provided. Here’s some information about that.
Also, since you’re his daughter, I wouldn’t recommend editing his article directly because of the conflict of interest. What I would do is disclose that you have a connection to him on your user page (link to the template), and then make edit requests on Talk:Emile Short. ◇HelenDegenerate20:45, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
Hello, thanks for answering. names of non-notable family members unless a reliable source is provided.
what reliable source are they looking for? birth certificate? Children are not non-notable family members. 194.230.148.119 (talk) 20:50, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
@194.230.148.119 A good source for names would be one that isn’t affiliated with the subject. Birth certificates are primary sources, so they can’t be cited in this instance. If a news article covers you and mentions your name, that would be preferable.
By the way, what I mean by ‘non-notable’ family members is based on Wikipedia’s definition of notability: someone is usually notable if they have significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. Children are absolutely notable within a family, but not necessarily notable by Wikipedia’s definition. ◇HelenDegenerate17:21, 15 June 2024 (UTC)

Hello - here is this draft article, i am not sure if it is WP:TOOSOON but would love to hear your opinion https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Thomas_Schinecker --Noxoug1 (talk) 09:01, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Kenneth R Sloan (17:08, 16 June 2024)

I am a Computer Science PhD, now Emeritus. I now collaborate with many Ophthalmologists and vision scientists (I build tools they find useful) - most specificially with my wife, Christine Curcio. She is an anatomist/pathologist/neuroscientist working on Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), and is considered a world authority on AMD and the anatomy of the human retina.

My primary goal at the moment is to create (and then slowly amplify) a Wiki page about her. I am interested in examples of similar Wiki pages, and guidance on how to best proceed.

I have zero experience editing Wiki pages and have just now created an account but I wrote my first HyperText in 1968 and am an experienced academic author. --Kenneth R Sloan (talk) 17:08, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi Kenneth R Sloan, and welcome to Wikipedia. When I write a new article, I think about what categories it might be added to, and I like to look at articles within that category to see how they’re structured. In this case, you would likely want to check out those within Category:Neuroscientists and its subcategories.
As for advice on how to get started, I would first start writing a draft through the Articles for Creation process. This page will take you through the various do’s and don’ts, and I cannot recommend it enough. By the way, since you would be writing about your wife, it’s strongly encouraged that you declare a conflict of interest on your user page. Pasting this bit of code should do the trick.

Hello, nice to meet you. Sorry for bothering with you if you don't want to be a mentor. I have created three drafts. "Cross Road (musical)", "Frankenstein (2014 musical)" and "Theater Creation". May I ask what more I should add to these before I submit them for review (besides a song list for Frankenstein, which I don't have access through except from Korean-language pages, and I don't speak Korean)?

If I submit a draft for review and it isn't perfect, what would happen? Someone in the Musical Theatre project has been helping me, but I don't want to take up too much of their time.

Thank you in advance for any advice. --EncreViolette (talk) 14:58, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
