Only the first two verses seem to have even a peripheral connection to the "subject" of the song...the following verses were written for Bessie McCoy's inevitable encores (Nell Brinkley described her thus: "she swings on her heel and leaps away into a wild fantastic headlong dance--the dance of a crazy king's clown, half girl, half wild boy, heady with the wine of the Spring air at twilight….The black satin of her bloomers fills like sails, and they ripple and flatten against her body. Her hair files in loose flax around her face, and her face is a vivid white candle flame in the yellow aureole of her hair….Her feet might be bounding white balls carrying her body with them in their riles, leaping flight. She circles madly around the boards, touching lightly and rebounding form the jutting points of the painted mock scenery, like an imprisoned moth, or an elf hunting for some lost thing and fearful of being caught. She is wonderful.") and seem to be filled with the topical references typical of revues rather than book musicals... For example, the 6th verse's topicality can be seen in this letter:

I've changed the lyricist's name back to his pen name (Collin Davies), because I think it's important that it match his ASCAP and Victor Library credits, and it's the name you'll find in discussions about the song; it's also not just his name without the "George", because his real name was George Collins Davies, with an "s" on the "Collins". Planet of Dinosaurs

Hi, I noticed that you added "Planet of Dinosaurs is registered as copyright to Deathbeast Productions, in the United States Copyright Office database, it is not in the public domain. It has been claimed that the film lacks a copyright notice and is therefore in the public domain, but that rule only applies for works published prior to 1978." to the Planet of Dinosaurs article. I'm a bit confused because I don't see where it has been claimed that the film lacks a copyright notice. Someone had posted the claim in List of films in the public domain in the United States‎ (unsourced) and it went unchallenged for a long time and spread around the Internet and can be seen in various places like YouTube etc .. for purposes of reliable sources I changed the wording of what it says to remove any mention of claims, just notified on Copyright Office records and law about copyright notices. I think the mockup is good, I'm not sure about the bold link in the lead (see WP:MOSBOLD) and I don't think the notes column should be so wide now there's so much added to the shortlisted col, perhaps work that a bit. Also, since we have so few images, it's now a case of either ditching them all, adding all we have down the right-hand side or keeping it as it is (which looks odd to me). Wikilinking inside book titles

What do you mean by "disagree"? Disagree with the consensus you hope to find? Or am I inconsistent within my user space (two sections that I mentioned), or inconsistent from user space to the list and the articles? The big list of winners was internally inconsistent last month and I made it consistent, i think.

A few days ago I posted this but you didn't respond so I didn't know your thoughts on it, then I saw the draft page just posted, and saw wikilinks inside titles, so thought you were going ahead with that format. I didn't read that comment. Perhaps because I so quickly (next day) contributed again to the same Talk page, I missed it on my watchlist.

Certainly I prefer wikilinks within title myself, as a user. To me the explicit notes are clutter.

I wonder whether we should use nothing, rather than explanatory notes or links within titles, in the List of winners of the National Book Award. The lists of winners and finalists are inevitably cluttered, so that is the better choice if we will do it in one of the two locations.

I have in front of me a photocopy of the following document:

Morgan Kavanagh, Application to The Literary Fund, November 4, 1844, Royal Literary Fund (RLF) file no. 548, item 15, British Library.

Two extracts from this document should be of interest here:

"I know neither my age nor where I was born; but believe it was in Dublin about the year 1799".

and

"I have dropped the name of Peter on learning that it was not strictly legal, it being only a name which I adopted when confirmed."

The first of these extracts is the justification for changing the birth year from 1800 to ca 1799.

The second deals with the matter of Morgan's name. Many people use the name Morgan Peter Kavanagh whereas, strictly speaking, it should be simply Morgan Kavanagh. Most of his publications used the shorter name.

I have not seen Sutherland's book. But I note that he has misspelled the name Kavanagh.

As you created this page in the first place I suggest that you change Morgan Peter Kavanagh to Morgan Kavanagh.

As I have said, I do have a considerable amount of information about Morgan Kavanagh which is not widely known. Admittedly, Morgan Kavanagh was not a person of widespread interest but I would like to assist in making this Wikipedia page a bit more comprehensive. I'm somewhat unsure where to start.

Meanwhile, you probably haven't seen this book:

Eileen Fauset, The politics of writing: Julia Kavanagh, 1824-1877, Manchester University Press, 2009. Chapter One contains information about Morgan Kavanagh (some of which I contributed) and may be of interest to you. Also, I note that you have contributed to the Wikipedia page on Julia Kavanagh. It would be worthwhile, I think, to add Eileen Fauset's book to the references on that page.

Template:Did you know nominations/Seaman Frank

Hi, I've reviewed this (I moved it back to the original location because moving the templates breaks things but mainly because I couldn't figure out how to edit it otherwise!) and I'm afraid there are a couple of issues. The more serious one is that I don't find the hook referenced or even mentioned in the article text. The other is that you appear to have at least 5 DYK credits and therefore to need to do a quid pro quo review, and there is none noted in the template. Inline citations

1. "You don't have to use inline citations on Wikipedia. It's best practice and recommended, but there are plenty of articles that use References at the end with no inline. In fact for the first 3 or 4 years of Wikipedia, inline cites were almost non existent."

Yes, inline citations weren't very common for those old years. I was around back then. But that was way back then. Wikipedia has developed since then to become more complex, more developed, more exacting. When an article doesn't use inline citations, it's a serious problem. It's tagged, saying that inline citations are needed. So in effect, yes, for stuff that is not "common knowledge" and/or is likely to be challenged you have to have inline citations. In practice, very little is "common knowledge" or is unlikely to be challenged. To make a good article today, in 2012, inline citations are mandatory.

2. "2. When you delete key information like the above, you effectively unreferenced the entire article without noting it anywhere, such as on the talk page, or putting the inlines in yourself. That is not good practice. I realize you are passionate about having inlines and believe the only response is to immediately delete it and move on - but think through the consequence and think about how you can inform future editors of this information so they can take steps to correct it. Don't assume the article is on someones watchlist. You just deleted it without taking any positive steps to correct it or note that information anywhere, and now the article is a unreferenced article that future editors will have no idea it once actually had information about the source used in writing it."

The article isn't supposed to be cited in that manner. It cites a large video, but I don't know how much of the content really comes from the video, or how much was added by anonymous users who didn't understand that the video was supposed to be a "primary reference." For all I know, the notice that "Unless otherwise noted it is the primary source for this article." could have been left back awhile ago, before some new anon came in and added more uncited information. We don't use "Unless otherwise noted it is the primary source for this article." the same reason why we don't use ibid on Wikipedia - they date really quickly.

And the article shouldn't even rely on one source that much. We have {{singlesource}} to tell people that there needs to be a wider variety of sources. Part of the reason why I didn't attempt to correct the "unciting" of the article, is because I had no idea if the article was really even cited that way, or if it was just an outdated notice.

If a video is to be cited, generally it is best to include minute counts, like "03:30" to indicate where in the video the cited material comes from. Be as specific as possible so an editor verifying the content can quickly check for the material.

I do attempt to "inform future editors of this information so they can take steps to correct it" through edit summaries, calling attention to major changes. I do go on inexperienced editors' talk pages and tell them "Hey! You need to be doing X, Y, and Z" if they do something wrong.

You should have moved the statement "Unless otherwise noted it is the primary source for this article" to the talk page with the above explanation, and not just deleted it, as a courtesy to future editors who might want to go back through the article history and figure out what that statement is referring to so that they can add inline citations. It's not difficult using the article history to figure it out, not a mystery. But it did become a mystery when you deleted the statement without leaving a record of it on the talk page, future editors just see an unsourced article with no explanation (unless they happen to view older revisions). Anyway I caught it and added the inline cites. As for single source, there is no other source that details the inner workings of the NYTBR, I've looked. The video source is of very high quality in terms of reliability and verifiability, plus there are 5 other sources in the article. If there were more sources for some of the facts, I'd certainly add them, they just don't exist, at least not accessible online and none that I know of offline. As for adding video time tags, yes agree that would be best, when I get some time to rewatch the hour video I will do so. Green Cardamom (talk) 16:08, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

I did intend to use the edit history itself as a way of alerting people. Perhaps next time I could also use the talk page too, just to be thorough. Anyhow I do encounter sources which are the only ones which explain X aspect of a subject, and they can be very, very helpful. Even so, an article still has to have a variety of sources. One can accomplish this by using sources to back up the stuff that is not unique to the video and/or building up sections of subjects that are not covered in the video. Hmm, I'd say the novella trumps the village and the film, but that may be my academic bias :-) Here's one scholar rendering it Lake of the Bees]; I left out of my expansion of the film article Harlan's use of bee imagery, which I think goes to show why he is often accused of "overwrought" filmic techniques. There's an academic paper called "Bee's Lake, or the Curse of Silence: A Study of Theodore Storm's Immensee" (in German Life and Letters, 1962). The book Theodor Storm's Immensee: A Critical Overview refers to it as "Bee's Lake". These seemed more reliable since they are works dedicated about the book. On the contrary, there was no consensus to add that content. And while I believe completely that your contribution was in good faith and was in ignorance of the prior decisions, it is still a mere dictionary definition. That is, the content (whether presented in paragraph form or in bullets) is all more lexical than encyclopedic. It is an article about a word including meaning, etymology, usage notes and such. The encyclopedia article about the underlying concept is at man.

To see the prior versions of the page which were also purely lexical and which were repeatedly rejected by the community, just look at the pagehistory behind Bloke itself. Here is an example. It was moved to Wiktionary in 2005 based on a solid consensus that lexical entries belong at our sister project and encyclopedia entries belong here. Over time, it was again turned into a dictionary definition and again slashed back to the disambiguation content. I am not aware of any consensus to reverse those decisions.

What I did, by the way, is explicitly not deletion as we use that term here at Wikipedia. If I had deleted it, there would have been no pagehistory for you to restore. Deletion requires special admin powers to execute and special admin powers to undo. Deletion removes the pagehistory. Removing content from a page, even to the point of turning the entire page into a redirect, has no effect on pagehistory, requires no special powers to execute and can be (as you demonstrated) reverted by anyone. Removing content is an ordinary-editor action and is not deletion. As such, AfD has no jurisdiction. Were I to propose such a thing, the debate would be immediately shut down as inappropriate. So, no, I will not propose it to AfD - that forum is irrelevant.

I do appreciate your contributions. Wikipedia needs more good editors. But if you want to create entries about words rather than about concepts, I recommend you consider our sister project instead. Rossami (talk) 13:39, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

First off I have been an editor of Wikipedia since 2004 so appreciate your tone in the last paragraph. Second the content I wrote went beyond dictionary def, that is your opinion and I can assure you there are other editors on Wikipedia who might disagree with you given the chance, a chance which you are not willing to make available to me or others. Definition, etymology and usage notes are all the things you would expect to find in an encyclopedia article. See for example fuck. The difference is the style of writing and tone and other small things. Dictionaries and encyclopedia's often have the same content, they are just presented differently in both style and volume. The encyclopedia article has room to expand on things, such as history and and asides and other things. I don't know of which talk you speak. Am not an active user on wikipedia, so forgive me if I am missing it. I will concede that for some earlier years of the prize there are no records of winners beyond what had been produced on wikipedia. However, as many of the more recent years of winners are academics who have hyperlinked their names to their university webpages (or, in some cases, even provided official Yale record of the awards' receipt), it is disrespectful of you to entirely delete the winners list. Happy to discuss further there, thanks. The problem is that many of the names have no source, and the ones linking to staff University pages, well, anyone could say they won the award couldn't they? It appears to me that some of the names are people attempting to use Wikipedia to make it look like they are award winners, to pad their CV. This is a not uncommon problem. Re: Syrian uprising (2011–present) title

If another RM determines that Civil War should be in the title, the move protection will not stand in the way and it will be removed whenever another title decision is made. Its merely there to preclude unproductive, unilateral moves that cause dissention on these types of controversial topics. Its not my decision at this point what the title should be, that's up to interested editors to generate consensus via the RM process. IMHO however, I think a few more weeks to allow a broad locus of sources to start calling this conflict a civil war will probably make for a much more productive RM. Additionally, as long as the content in the article is supported by sourcing, the transition to calling this thing a Civil War can be documented in the article regardless of the title. --Mike Cline (talk) 18:07, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Amish Population

Hi! I am really curious what you think should be done about the tags you recently put on List of U.S. states by Amish population. Are you aware of some new books out about the Amish? The literature on the Amish is sparse, to say the least. The books by Kraybill are about all I know of. The Amish don't really cooperate with the census takers and there is no central organization of Amish congregations. If you know of newer sources than Kraybill, please by all means, share. Korean literature in translation

I agreed with your rebuttal analysis that Korean literature in translation[3] was a finite list, very likely mostly complete and focused on the limited fiction work translated into English (which I didn't see until you pointed it out). Being an English Wikipedia, I immediately saw the list as a very valuable information source to English Wikipedia under WP:LISTPURP. Deleting empty categories

Hello, Green Cardamom. I have come across a couple of empty categories that you had marked with the template {{db-delete}}. This particular template is not meant for use on pages; it is a "meta-template" that is used to build other templates. Admins patrolling for pages to be deleted will never see these pages. A more effective approach would be to use {{db-catempty}}, which marks the category as empty and flags it for deletion. Also, if you are renaming categories, please consider using the {{cfr}} and {{cfr-speedy}} processes, which automate the renaming and also permit review by other editors. I don't know the procedure but you will want to get some advice from someone who does. It will probably involve writing a formal letter to the Wikimedia Foundation offices in CA with some method of proving identity and explanation of reason etc.. it might not necessarily be a straight forward thing so you'll want to be diplomatic - since the consensus of the AfD was Keep deleting the article will go against community consensus which can be difficult. Another idea is make a query at WP:ANI but without mentioning the name of the article, ask for general information how to delete an article that had AfD consensus for Keep, due to some external reasons or factors it needs to be deleted - but I wouldn't let it turn into a debate since that will make it even harder for someone at Wikimedia Foundation to act. AFD talk answer cross-post

Your best defence against any COI is to go to that article and fix it. Remove *everything* suspicious. Make it look like a good, neutral article. Yes, its a lot of work. Yes, it may get deleted anyway. Its still your best tool. Have good, solid sourcing. Then, go to AfD and say "Keep it now that I've removed all the advertising, weasel words, self-published sources, press releases, etc. because look what's left" Bonus points if you promise to keep an eye on the article so it doesn't go off-track again. Help?

I'm kind of hesitant to nom this article, but I'm sort of leaning towards it being necessary for Unfettered. Long story short, this is a book with a heart of gold type purpose: to raise money to go towards Scott Speakman's medical bills. (He runs or is influential in running Suvudu.) The only problem? All of the coverage so far would be considered primary, as it's all by people involved with the project. The book hasn't been released yet and there's zero in-depth coverage of this in any independent and reliable sources. The most I can find is an Elbakin post and I'm not even sure that this site is considered reliable. You'll probably see this up on AfD and if so, I'm expecting a fight over it. I hate myself for nominating it but at the same time I can't give it special treatment that I don't give other authors...Tokyogirl79 (talk) 08:30, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Help with an article?

Hey GC! I wanted to ask you a favor. I've been keeping tabs on reviews for the rest of the Fifty Shades series and I was just thinking that it might be time to create an entry for the series as a whole. I'm not sure what else we can put in that isn't already in the original article other than reviews for the other books and a series synopsis, though. It's a rather big overhaul since people will expect more out of it than with other articles, so I wanted to get someone else in to help creating it. I couldn't think of anyone better than you! I've started a draft at User:Tokyogirl79/Fifty Shades Trilogy and wanted to extend an invitation to you to edit away at the userspace copy. I have some sources at my sandbox ([User:Tokyogirl79/sandbox]]) under the appropriate headings. I got some of the article done, but it's been a while since I've read the book and I also don't want it to merely be a restating of the original article.
