Height of footballers

Hi Jeff79,

I noticed that you object to heights in metres rather than centimetres. It's just a small point, but it's good practice to avoid centimetres where possible. You may be interested in this discussion paper. Cheers, Michael Glass (talk) 15:00, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for sharing your opinion, Michael. I however am of a similar opinion to the websites from which you're taking these players' heights. While it may be different in the UK, Australia is more like Japan in that centimetres are the usual way to express human height.--Jeff79 (talk) 11:20, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Shading

Mate, regarding the blue or maroon shading List of Australia national rugby league team players what do you reckon about the handful of old timers who were actually Kiwis ? Any thoughts ? -Sticks66 14:17, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, a pale grey would make sense. I've just been leaving them white so far. But perhaps white could be left for those who were neither Kiwis, nor Maroons nor Blues.--Jeff79 (talk) 21:15, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Mistakes in editing

Sorry about the mistakes in editing. I'll do my best to fix them up and I don't expect you to do it. Please let me know - politely, if you can - if I miss any. Michael Glass (talk) 09:33, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

On going through some of your changes they seem mostly to turn 1.80m into 180cm. Is that your problem? Michael Glass (talk) 09:43, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Huddersfield Giants Hall of Fame

I can't find a single source for the Template:Huddersfield Giants Hall of Fame Inductees on the internet. Can you?--Jeff79 (talk) 04:30, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi Jeff79, I sourced the template from Page-6 of Fartowner - A Celebratory look at 25 years of Huddersfield Rugby League Club Players Association by David Gronow (grandson of Benjamin Gronow) & Mick Rhodes, the Hall of Fame is housed in the Galpharm Stadium. I've addded a quouted-out reference at the head of the template. Best Regards. DynamoDegsy (talk) 11:45, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
So it's from a book. Ok, no worries. I wonder why the club leaves it off their website. Wierd.--Jeff79 (talk) 11:48, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Possible DYK

I've never really cared much for DYK but while updating Sam Tomkins I discovered he's the only debutant in the history of rugby league to score five tries in his first match. Surely worth a mention, do you think? GW(talk) 11:54, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, for sure. Go for it.--Jeff79 (talk) 12:46, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

John Buttigieg

Why would anyone need a two-line disambig John Buttigieg if there is a four-line Buttigieg? The Other Saluton (talk) 13:38, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Because clearly, if someone types "John Buttigieg" they are not looking for "Buttigieg". Otherwise why did they type 'John'?--Jeff79 (talk) 21:39, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
They can easily find both Johns in Buttigieg. An extra link from Buttigieg to John Buttigieg is by no means necessary. It just hampers the way to articles. The Other Saluton (talk) 04:21, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

Hello, Jeff79. Would you weigh in on the above linked discussion regarding an edit you made? Flyer22 (talk) 16:21, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi Jeff, is there any reason why you continually change this players position of choice from 'Hooker' to 'forwards' I have created this page from scratch and wish to keep it as is. Thank you in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ronitson (talkcontribs) 09:46, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm not trying to make "your" article worse. See WP:VERIFIABILITY.--Jeff79 (talk) 10:20, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
Mate you continue to make changes unnecessary changes for no particular reason. Im not sure why it is of such concern to you. But the article will stay the way it is because there is nothing false about it. Cheers, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ronitson (talkcontribs) 00:24, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
Ummmm, not sure what else to say but, see WP:VERIFIABILITY.--Jeff79 (talk) 00:49, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
What is the difference between "He usually plays at Hooker.[1]" and "His position of choice is at Hooker.[1] He is also a Goal kicker." Why do you feel the need to change it? Edit other articles if your boredom urges you. Cheers, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ronitson (talkcontribs) 00:55, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

So sad that this has to be typed out, but ah well... 'He usually plays at hooker' is a statement of fact. 'His position of choice is hooker' is a statement about a person's preference/opinion. One is supported by reliable, third party sources and one is not. It's clear you're quite new here. You've got an awful lot to learn. Again, I suggest starting with WP:VERIFIABILITY.--Jeff79 (talk) 09:59, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi Jeff, You keep removing the image link of this page. As it explains, it is there so a user that owns an image can put it onto the page to make it a better page. If you remove it i will continue to undo your change. Best you leave it and find something else to entertain your boredom. Cheers, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ronitson (talkcontribs) 02:26, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Test team lineups

Hi Jeff, for the Test team line-ups on that 1910 GB RL tour of Australia article, you might want to consider the horizontal small font team lineups like we've use on the Wallaby tour articles. Always handy when there are a number of Tests and line-ups to fit into a tour article and fits well if you're putting in any match reports of individual Tests. Cheers -Sticks66 14:21, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Hey. Yeah I went for something similar when I worked on 2008 Rugby League World Cup matches. But I dunno, I guess I just like the way the vertical teams have players of a position lined up against one another for immediate comparison. Although I know what you mean, and I think they only really work when they don't stretch past the text beside them. I guess I'm hoping that (unlikely as it is) that the old Kangaroo tour tests someday will be similarly filled with prose to fix that big, empty, white space issue.--Jeff79 (talk) 13:32, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
Well I know what you mean in terms of GFs. Nothing like a man-on-man lineup. That 2010 GF matchup does look impressive, but jeez if we're going to go back to every GF report for the seasons past and make them look as smooth as 2010 ......well that's a big job and something I thought we'd done & dusted in 2007! Cheers mate -Sticks66 14:46, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

An ask

I've dropped out of my Wallaby captain article focus for bit and have been glamming-up the in-line citation refs on the old DCI article. In the Aust section, the Tubby Allan cross-code debut date is still unclear. Do I recall that you have some access to sources re the Other Nats test teams of years gone by ? -Sticks66 14:53, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Nah, I don't remember seeing any. If I did I'd probably have just incorporated it into the article.--Jeff79 (talk) 02:11, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

AMNRL Representative team

The USA Tomahawks are an AMNRL rep team as you can see here http://www.amnrl.com/teams/usa-tomahawks they do not represent the United States they represent the AMNRL. Tell me, if they represent the United States then all rugby league players from either the USA Rugby League or the AMNRL will be considered for selection! http://www.amnrl.com/news/usa-tomahawks-squad-colonial-cup the squad named only features players from the AMNRL. Captain Apple Pope was supposed to play for the Delaware Vipers and is listed as playing for Flordia http://www.rugbyleagueinternationalscores.com/index.php/2011/08/tomahawks-the-breakdown/ I mean cmon at the start of the season the AMNRL are calling themselves real rugby league, real players and real teams and they have a supposed South East expansion conference http://www.amnrl.com/news/tomahawks-train-squad this team does not represent the United States they represent the AMNRL they are not a rugby league team, they are an AMNRL team. You can obviously see how I feel about this if you can edit the United States national rugby league team in a sensible manner then please go ahead. Youndbuckerz

Tony Williams

Hi Jeff, do you think we really need both the recent photo of Andy Gregory, and the cover of Pint Size? If so, I can change the charity section and see if I can fit it in there (since it isn't really coaching). I think a picture of Gregory playing for GB would be fantastic, but if we can get one which isn't the cover of Pint Size, would you agree that it would be more suitable? Heywoodg 10:00, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
I don't see why both can't be there.--Jeff79 (talk) 11:24, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Fair enough, I will tidy the page up and move the picture to an appropriate section! Heywoodg 12:09, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Jeff, the whole "fair use" thing on that image was bothering me and looking here WP:FUC, it seems that the Pint Size image should indeed no longer be used as a free image of Andy Gregory is now available. What do you think? Heywoodg 14:27, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Please read my comment above. It is nothing to do with "one image per article", it is about fair use. See WP:FUC:
"There is no automatic entitlement to use non-free content in an article or elsewhere on Wikipedia. Articles and other Wikipedia pages may, in accordance with the guideline, use brief verbatim textual excerpts from copyrighted media, properly attributed or cited to its original source or author, and specifically indicated as direct quotations via quotation marks,

, or a similar method. Other non-free content—including all copyrighted images, audio and video clips, and other media files that lack a free content license—may be used on the English Wikipedia only where all 10 of the following criteria are met.

No free equivalent."

Sorry, I don't know how to style that correctly, but you can see on the original page. Fair use requires fulfillment of ALL TEN criteria and the image now fails the first. Doesn't it? Cheers Heywoodg 05:23, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

I don't get your point. It's illustrating the book, not the player. Of course there is no free equivalent of a book cover. First criteria: met.--Jeff79 (talk) 06:43, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Which would be perfectly fine in an article about Pint Size (the book). However, the article is about Andy Gregory, not the book. The Pint Size image, is being used as a photo of Andy Gregory, for which there is a free equivalent, so it shouldn't be used there. Is that any clearer? Heywoodg 07:33, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Category:Rugby league players by French club

Hi Jeff. I've reverted your changes that used Category:Rugby league players by French club instead of Category:Rugby league players in France by club. The latter is the correct format as you can see at Category:Rugby league players by club but also at Category:Association football players by club. I have also requested the deletion of Category:Rugby league players by French club since it's now empty. If you disagree, feel free to nominate Category:Rugby league players in France by club for renaming at Categories for discussion where you'll get input from other people. NRL v AFL

No worries on the tables. My major concern is that one of those sources says people dispute who had higher ratings, in a source that you used to say that the NRL has higher ratings. To avoid the conflict, I've put in recent ratings total. This whole section should probably be spun off into its own article, summarised and then put back in… but to avoid conflict, having numbers seems to be the best bet as it makes it harder to argue. And there are plenty of reliable sources around which provide numbers like the ones cited. Screen Australia also has ratings. --LauraHale (talk) 09:09, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

I disagree that the claim of aggregate audiences being highest is contentious as it is supported unambiguously by the source. In truth, given the article's title, that belongs in the lead-in. Tucking it down out of sight under the table where a new section about films starts doesn't look too good. Also, there was no need for the 3D TV part to go anywhere as it flowed chronologically before. As you said on the talk page, we shouldn't remove accurate and well-referenced content about one (major) sport for the sake of a consistently low standard across all sports.--Jeff79 (talk) 09:19, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Categories of years in Australian and English Sport

The vast majority of teams that play in the NRL or Super League are either Australian or English. Also they were previously in different Australian or English categories. Other relevant nationality categories can also be added if needed. Djln--Djln (talk) 14:35, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi there, a few years ago, you made this edit, which added a line about Gillett playing Aussie Rules for WA whilst in Kalgoorlie. The WAFL state game lists here and here don't mention him, and I think back then the Goldfields often had their own separate representative team to WA. Do you have a reference for him playing Aussie rules, or even a tighter time frame than just "after the war"? I've had a bit of a look through the old newspapers at trove but nothing jumps out at me as a definitive reference. Thanks The-Pope (talk) 05:25, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

Unearthing old Qld & NSW country detail.

Found an old boyhood book of mine. Gregory's Guide to RL. published 1965. Has many of those details that are hard to find on-line but which you've been gathering: results of every pre-origin NSW v QLD clash up till 1964; good detail on Bulimba Cup; snippets of info on which local club some of the more obscure Qld & NSW Country Kangaroo reps came from. Was thinking about that long mooted idea of an article on pre-Origin interstate clashes. At this stage I probably only have enough info to make it a list of results in the kind of format that this one uses. Being able to ever find complete player lists still seems like a pipe-dream. But perhaps you have thoughts ? -Sticks66 02:38, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Mate, I think between your book, this and everything else we can scrounge up we might just have everything we need. Good times. Those years between 1980 and 1965 might prove troublesome though.--Jeff79 (talk) 08:21, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

1897 in sports

Hi. I had to revise your edits here as the sports project has a standard format for RL seasons which is used in the majority of years in sport articles. In addition, you asserted that Hunslet won the first RL Cup final but it was in fact Batley. ----Jack | talk page 07:05, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Your "England" sub-heading is completely redundant as all the items mentioned occurred there.--Jeff79 (talk) 12:46, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Your changes have been reverted. You link to the same competition (the Challenge Cup) twice and since all events are in England there is clearly no need for an 'England' sub-heading.--Jeff79 (talk) 04:28, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

It has obviously escaped your notice that the sports project has standard layouts which we are trying to introduce across all the years in sport articles. This includes the use of sub-headings which specify a country unless it is obvious from the context which one it is. We might then use a heading like "Events" or the name of a competition. This applies to rugby league too. I have accepted your point that an "events" header is superfluous in 1897 but the reader who knows little about rugby league, which is a minor sport, needs something to indicate that it was played in England. You're right that the cup competition shouldn't be linked twice so I'll fix that. ----Jack | talk page 07:00, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Everything in that section is part of the 1896-97 Northern Rugby Football Union season and I think it's absurd that no link to that article is "allowed". The same goes for 1897 Challenge Cup. Naturally I find it frustrating the way some Wikipedians won't "allow" improvements for no better reason than for keeping things at a consistently shitty standard.--Jeff79 (talk) 07:08, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
No one is saying you can't link to those articles if you wish but the summary information which the years in sport articles need is in the articles we already do link to. If you want to expand the section because some significant event occurred in 1897 which is described only in 1896-97 Northern Rugby Football Union season then do so. When I talk about a standard layout, I mean the format of the article not the links. I find it frustrating that some Wikipedians have to resort to using phrases like "shitty standard" and I would remind you that you introduced false information when you removed the result of that final and said it was won by "Hundlet" (sic). My reason for writing to you in the first place was to point out that I had reverted your edit with good cause and, per WP:AGF, I wasn't just dismissing you like some fly-by IP. I suggest we drop this. ----Jack | talk page 11:47, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Henry Holloway

Do you reckon he spent the 1955 season with Waratah Mayfield ? The sentence seems contradictory in saying he played the 1955 GF with Newtown (which he did do) but also went to Newcastle that year. I reckon it may have been 1958, then he turns up in Brisbane in 1959. -Sticks66 13:04, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for adding to it. I read somewhere that he was originally from Newcastle. Maybe it was earlier in his career? You're probably right though and the Newcastle Herald article has an error.--Jeff79 (talk) 06:51, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Maori All Blacks

Just noticed an error in the following article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_M%C4%81ori_rugby_union_team

Biggest loss in the right hand panel currently reads New Zealand Māori 6 – 31 Australia (23 September 1936)

List of results on http://www.allblacks.com/news/34/NZ-Maori-first-class-results-1910-May-2010 suggests otherwise. S Africa d Maori AB 37 - 0 in Auckland 1956.

The above link would also be a useful addition to the article.
