Source formatting

Hi Funandtrvl! I have noticed that you changed the formatting of a source in the article Third Battle of Mount Hermon. I must say that I am puzzled by both changes. While it might be proper to include co-authors (this can be discussed separately), I can't say I understand why the Hebrew title is necessary when the book has an English title (not my translation, but the book's own title in English). Also I am puzzled by the use of diacritics, like in "Karṭa". I am assuming that you copied these from WorldCat, but assure you that diacritics are not used in most publications and/or citations, and are confusing to the reader. No problem. Still two things though:

1) Why is the Hebrew title necessary?

2) The publisher field is still incorrect. The book was co-published by Carta and the ministry, while right now it implies as if they are the same publishing house.

I can easily fix these issues myself, but would like to hear your reasoning very much, in order to avoid edit wars in the future (since I used this source and similar ones in dozens of articles, it should be consistent). My reasoning/thoughts were to be thorough and informative (not that you weren't). Because the 2nd book is written in Hebrew (no reason why the Hebrew title shouldn't be listed--the German-language books usually list the German title only), I believe it's better to use one template (cite book), which already has the "language" parameter in it, instead of two templates together, (cite book and he icon). In addition, the instructions for cite book recommend using the "real" title, and then "trans_title" (for the English Wikipedia readers). In reality, there isn't anything wrong with your formatting, but it is less confusing to use the one template, instead of two. The other problems with the original citations were: 1) Jehuda Lothar Wallach's first name was incorrectly spelled; and 2) Rabinovich's book was originally published in 2004 (hardcover), the 2005 edition was paperback. Regarding the publisher parameter, should it read "Carta and Ministry of Defense-Publications"? Thanks, --Funandtrvl (talk) 21:36, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

One more thing- the "pages" or "page" parameter: These parameters are for listing the pages relevant to the citation, not the total number of pages in the book. That is why I removed it. --Funandtrvl (talk) 21:52, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi again! About using two templates, it's something I didn't do until I initiated a discussion at one of the citation templates' talk pages (might've been a couple years ago), asking why not all of the citation templates had a language field (I believe they do today), but the users there told me that the lang icon template was standard for indicating language and was preferable to the language field, and since then I use it. I don't really see a problem with having two templates.

Regarding the title's language, I cordially disagree, for two reasons: a) Most Hebrew-language books from the year 2001 or so have official English titles precisely for this reason—to avoid English-speakers from having to use or translate the Hebrew title, because b) Hebrew is not readable to English-speakers, unlike German or most other languages.

Using English titles or even translations for Hebrew books is completely standard in English-language publications today. Every English-language history book I have lists the titles for these books in English.

Finally, you are right that Wallach's name should be spelled Jehuda, I'll correct it ASAP in other citations. However, I don't see the merit in including his middle name in the citation—it's not included in the book, therefore it's problematic if we include it. About the publisher: In this particular citation, we are in agreement.

Please let me know what you think about the title issue especially, since, as I said before, these citations are spread over dozens of articles, and whatever system we use, it should be consistent. If we can't reach an agreement, we should transfer the discussion to a broader forum eventually.

Response:

1. I haven't seen any references lately that using 2 templates is standard practice, since the "cite" templates all have the language option now. It's not necessary to change the others to one template, just for the sake of it. I changed it since I was already updating the name and year corrections, and am used to having it all within one template. If you're more comfortable using the 2 templates, that's fine with me. However, when I do come across formats that aren't following the usual "cite book" format, don't worry if you see me changing/updating them, as that is just my preference.
2. Yes, the alphabet is different. If they have official English titles, then I don't see a problem with not listing the Hebrew title (or listing it for that matter), either way is fine with me.
3. Using a middle name, if it's available, is fine, if not, it doesn't matter to me.

In summary, yes, the incorrect spelling should be updated. As for the original year (2004), it would be nice to add it, but it's not absolutely necessary. As for the middle initial, it's also optional, per preferences of each editor. Also, the title in Hebrew and/or English is an optional preference, based on the editor. I was simply trying to translate David Zenon Jacome-Moreira into Spanish, I don't believe the page should be deleted since there hasn't been any problems with this page, and it's linked to other important pages. It's been referenced from outside sources, and fixed multiple times from Wikipedia.

I wasn't involved in editing the Spanish version, but I see that the Spanish version was deleted, per G3-Promocional. For the English version, I also didn't have anything to do with deleting the page, my edit was to restore the "COI" template back to the page, which you removed, see: [1]. I see now that the maintenance templates have been changed to notability and autobiography, which are also related to COI. Please address those concerns regarding the article first. Seeking your input on this Travel article draft

Hi there Funandtrvl, given that you're one of the more well-seasoned Wikipedians within the WikiProject Travel and Tourism, I was hoping to get your input on a draft of an article that currently resides in my userspace here.

Having been diligent about establishing WP:Notability by citing WP:RS, and by writing in accordance with WP:NPOV, I feel that this draft is ready to be moved to mainspace. As the subject happens to have been a client of my employer (which is how I became familiar with the subject matter), I see it as important to disclose any potential WP:COI upfront; though I don't feel that this has affected the neutrality of the article draft (which covers all aspects of the subject, including litigation). Howdy. I edited the prayer page. I made 2 changes:

-I just clarified the wording of the 1st sentence of the 2nd paragraph. I don't know why you would delete my edit since all I did was clean up. -My second thing was to add that some Christians pray almost exclusively to Jesus. I know I can't easily look up a citation for this, but I guarantee that it's true from personal experience. Citations

Dear Funandtrvl, I received a note from you referencing the need to provide citations for the my edits on Dudleya setchelli. I added the references that clearly show the dialogue, actions and decision making made by Santa Clara county and their board of supervisors regarding approval of the project at Communications Hill and its impact to the local flora and fauna. Part of the mitigation measure that were agreed upon is buried in the Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR), which is not available online, but I have personally read. I am a field biologist by education and have worked extensively on habitat and endangered species conservation. It would be nice if someone whom is editing text on an article was equally familiar with the factual basis of an item before simply deleting it. I attempted to link a citation to the statement made, however it did not attach. So if you have better instructions for attaching the citations from non-electronically available documents, please advise.

First of all, the "source" that you added here: [2] is a dead link, and does not include the dialogue, actions, and decisions, etc., that you are referring to above. Under San Jose's website, there is an entire section for the FEIR reports. Have you checked there if the report you're referring to is online? If not, I would suggest to contact them to email you a pdf file, that you can reference in the article, because the information needs to be cited, and should not be added unless a source is found, preferably online. Secondly, your formating needs to be corrected. Please use {{cite web}} or similar for adding the reference to the article. Re: this edit to Talk:Signiphoridae I would like to have the article removed from these categories. Sorry I simply went ahead and deleted it. I feel putting a page on "low importance category" is not only unnecessary (if it's not important, people will not be looking at it and therefore you don't have to tell them it's not important), it's also innacurate. "Low importance" is not the same as "low priority". As you can see, it does have some importance for some of us. Hello

This is Afterrock81. Why do you insist on taking out a valid claim? What right do you have to limit valid theories from being understood by the general public? ALL THEORIES of how life on Earth began are rooted in pure faith. ALL of them. Even yours. Once it can be proven and re-proven life started from abiogenesis, then it will no longer be a theory.

The only reason I added this section here (and not on a different page) is because the search for "Origins of Life" redirected to the page showing only possible theories of spontaneous biogenesis. Once this tag is removed (and others general enough to include abiogenesis), I will gladly remove my section from this post. Until then, it belongs there as it is a perfectly valid (though, likewise unproven) theory.

your reversion of minor edit to fiat autos in the united states

Hi, could you please undo your reversion of my edit? I believe my edit improved the neutral point of view of the article yet you undid it citing neutral point of view. This does not make sense to me. The claim that fiat, well renowned at one time as maker of some of the worst vehicles known to mankind, has improved its quality is a pro-fiat claim. At this moment fiat has no vehicles in the united states, and mass produced european vehicles in general continue to rank amongst the worst in JD power surveys year after year. Edit of Jim Thorpe Article

Perhaps my edit of the Jim Thorpe article (adding 'extreme' before racial inequality) was not the perfect addition, but the statement "during a period of racial inequality" needs to be changed. It implies that at some point in American history there has not been racial inequality, which I do not think is a matter of debate. This phrase should either be removed, or changed to note that this time period had increased inequality if that is true. The fact that he is a convicted felon is sourced elsewhere in the article. It is not controversial, it is not libel --- it is a NPOV fact determined by a jury of his peers, and very widely publicized. Not a problem, I realize that, and I know it's a pain. I just use the editing tools. Under Preferences-Editing-Beta, turn on Enable enhanced editing toolbar; and under Pref-Gadgets, turn on refTools, if you haven't already. Hello, some questions

I have noticed that you have reverted one of Oldmedia's troublesome edits on the DLSU Pops Orchestra page and warned him (the latter to no avail, I presume). but I want to ask if there is anything that can be towards that said troublesome user? His account page is non-existent (except from his discussions and contributions page, of course) and the reversion that you did was just some of his continued blatant vandalism. I would have done things myself but I'm not really familiar with the things around here as I very rarely go online.

Problem with the Category you added on the WPUS/Quality content page

It appears that the category you added to the Quality content is causing the show hide boxes to render incorrectly. Its causing all the show hides to bunch to the left. I know I've been leaning on you a lot to help with things in WPUS and I appreciate everything you've done. I noticed that you made some edits over the years to Portal:United States and I was hoping you might be interested in helping out wiht that a bit too. Know that the WikiProject United States is up and running I am looking at focusing some attention on that portal since I feel its under our scope. Okay to remove Wikipedia:Dead-end pages/Header

Greetings, I've been cleaning out the backlog at Wikipedia:Dead-end pages, and since the backlog is down to just barely the P-T sections, I was thinking to remove the Wikipedia:Dead-end pages/Header filing app from that page (maybe leave a link to it hidden on the page). In it's place, we'd have the bot-populated by-moth WP:DEP listings, and one single page of all the backlog. I know you've worked on the Header, so wanted to check with you first. Not sure how hard this will be but I think its doable and will be a lot better than having to manually do it everyday. Hi, I found this article, which is obviously about 10 sailors (an aircrew) from U.S. Navy Patrol Squadron 4. However, I consider this page as utter nonsense. Its content may only be a footnote in the VP-4 article, in my opinion (if at all). Maybe you might want to delete it. I also notified User:High Contrast, but he does not seem online. Need help with a template again

I was hoping to not have to bother you and I think its probably something simple I am missing but I modified {{WikiProject Smithsonian Institution-related/sandbox}} to include a taskforce for the Archives of American Art and I hit a snag in the building of Categories. I created the categories I needed and they seem to be working as seen by the Top Importance link in paranthesis after the task force name in the template however it shows the categories in red below that as though they are not seeing the Project at all. Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Moving Signpost pages

Hi Funandtrvl,

as you could have seen by examing the histories, these pages were moved on purpose last year, following a consensus decision to rename "The Wikipedia Signpost" to "The Signpost". If you want to advocate a return to the old name, feel free to do so and obtain consensus. But until then, please undo you actions and move the pages back to reflect the Signpost's current name.

Yes, I am aware of that, however, it refers to "The Signpost" in the header line, and not the Wikipedia page name, which is move-protected as WP:Wikipedia Signpost (check the history). Consequently, the /subpages need to be aligned and be under that main WP page, not the redirected one, because it is much harder to find the pages and there is a greater possibility of double redirects. I am just trying to straighten that out, and I'll have to contact Pretzels to why half the pages weren't moved and are under the redirect. Secondly, the reason that I manually archived that section because it was not caught by Miszabot, because it does not have the standard (UTC) date at the end of its section. You must not have noticed that it was from December 2010, and the bot is set to archive at 90 days. Since today is July 2nd, the bot obviously didn't pick it up, that's why it was done manually by me. Hope this explains my actions to you. --Funandtrvl (talk) 07:45, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

I think you know it is rather easy to have a move protection lifted, or have an admin move a protected page. Therefore, I don't quite understand what is meant by "Consequently, the /subpages need to be aligned". And by the way, some of the pages you moved had been under Wikipedia:Signpost since their creation in 2009, long before the general rename. Now we suddenly have, for example, something like 900 Signpost stories (since February 2009, example) using a template redirect (Wikipedia:Signpost/Template:Signpost-header, just moved to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Template:Signpost-header), unless someone wants to go through them by bot and adjust the template names to the new names). I don't think this can be considered as improved consistency. Also, "Wikipedia:Signpost" is just shorter than "Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost", therefore your moves add complexity and increase page length in a lot of places.

In any case, it is appreciated that you give the system some attention and think about how to improve it. It is just that before making such massive changes, you should be talking to other users, especially those whose actions you are reverting - they may have had their reasons, and there may be aspects that you didn't consider.

HaeB is correct that the inconsistency is deliberate due to the rename agreed just over a year ago. Some pages have remained under "Wikipedia Signpost" to avoid unnecessary duplication or complication of our already complex templating system. Whilst new issues should technically live below Wikipedia:Signpost now, it doesn't seem crucial enough to justify recoding much of our system and making it harder to update in future. If you are brave enough, you are welcome to move the internal pages such as the Newsroom/Archives etc! Hi, Funandtrvl. This is a note to draw your attention to a very curious thing. On june 30, you left a comment here about some improper editing in the article List of travel magazines. Fortunately or unfortunately, I happen to be the user of this IP address and to the best of my knowledge I'm the only one to use it. I don't remember making any edit in the article in question. In the reference added to source her date and place of birth, it states that she "was born in 1929 to Jewish parents in what was then called Palestine..." In looking at the article Palestinian Jews, it states as a definition: "a Jewish inhabitant of Palestine (or Land of Israel) at various points in the region's history (see Dispute over usage of the term below). Jews in Palestine prior to the establishment of the State of Israel are more commonly referred to as "Yishuv" (Jewish Community)." It seems that she would probably fall into the "Yishuv" category. Geographically speaking, she was a "Palestinian Jew"; however, if there is a reason that you are disputing the use of that term or category, then please let me know the reasons why. As you can see, Category:Palestinian Jews here on Wikipedia does not include all the hundreds of Jews born in this area before 1948. Self-identification, as in the case of Arna's son Juliano Mer-Khamis, Uri Davis or Ilan Halevi, does seem to be an accepted criteria. What I was trying to accomplish was for the sub-categories to be for "the Chicago metropolitan area, including populated places over 30,000; counties; regions; and sub-regions." Because the sub-cats were getting way too numerous, I pared it down by matching what is in the chicagoland template to which sub-categories would display. Needless to say, the categories for the smaller towns can be found under the "county" sub-category, of which I added the missing ones (mostly Wisc. and Ind.) I felt that having every single municipality's sub-categories would make the category have several hundred sub-categories, making it hard to navigate through. Thus, the smaller towns are found under their respective counties. I know that you were only ensuring that the content of Cuban Missile Crisis was sourced & Neutral, but you were engaged in an edit war (in which you reverted contributions well over 3 times) and I thought that I should point out that even if you are right edit warring is wrong. I couldn't see how any of the exemptions to the 3 revert rule applied in this case and was hoping that both you and the IP user would back down to avoid being blocked for edit warring. When I was using WP:HUGGLE and even before that, this reference usually applies: WP:EW#What edit warring is, quote: "Reverting vandalism is not edit warring, but note that merely editing from a slanted point of view, general insertion or removal of material, or other good-faith changes, are not considered vandalism. Reverting to enforce certain overriding policies is not considered edit warring." I hope this is okay. I was in a similar situation last January (an IP insisting that North Korea is non communist). An admin gave me a similar heads up that I was edit warring. When I went on her talk page about it, she told me someone had recently lost rollball in a more or less similar situation with an IP (actually I used Undo in the North Korea dispute).

After begging hat in hand for months, he eventually got it back after agreeing to tutoring in using it, be on probation and whatever other indignities. Intimidated, walking on eggshells instead of being bold as you need to sometimes be in RC. When you're in a grey area situation, be bold, but best to avoid using tools. cleanup template tidying

Thanks for your recent updates to various cleanup templates. I've undone some of the changes to emphasis: the prevailing style is just to emphasise the verb phrase which describes the problem, rather than peppering these templates with bits of bold. Edit protected requests to work around Rdcheck bugs

That is a possibility, I'd have to check with the author of the tool. The ones I'm finding are from updating the Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Template redirects page. George Washington citations

I see you've been cleaning up some of the dead link/cites in this article, thanks for keeping up with that. I didn't realize that there was even a "cite conference" template. I do have some questions about some of your changes though.

• In this edit you changed some of the references to refer to the entire Dennis Pogue paper "Shad, Wheat and Rye", the original refs had the more specific pages. For instance the first cite refers to pages 2-4, the second instance referred to pages 2-10.
• Also in the above edit, the first instance for Eleanor Breen's "A Pretty Considerable Distillery" refers to pages 209-220, the second instance refers only to page 211.

When the work itself does not change but the pages do, I usually put <ref>Author's last name, Page #<ref> or <ref>Author's name, Title, Page #</ref>. Would that be acceptable to you if I changed the second instance (of those sources being referenced, but with the different page #s) to the author name/page number variety? I think there's a way to reference using the ref name and adding the pg number. I'll look it up. • The original citation of Ref 50 has the Page # as Page 2.

Take a look at Help:Shortened footnotes#In-text cite, example #2. I think that might work to link it back to the original "cite web" or "cite journal" w/o duplicating the ref. What I mean is that we should use harvard refs, ie, the main citation would be listed down in the Bibliography section without page numbers (or with the page numbers for the whole document, like 1-12), then each in-text ref would have the relevant pg numbers. I think single pages are preferable to doubles, and doubles are preferable to ranges and ranges are preferable to chapters and chapters are preferable to books. If the whole purpose of references is so that readers can verify a statement, then that statement's source information should be made as accurately accessible as possible. I just think that using harvard refs would probably look better and clean up the ref section. When I get some time, I can format the sources under "Bibliography" to add the "|ref=harv". I've been working on {{WPFOOD}} all week, the categories that are listed for deletion are no longer populated by the template, that's why they're tagged that way. Hi,

Yesterday, on January 21st, I added a date to the Wikipedia page about said day. Only few minutes later the page was been reset by you, claiming it would "not appear to be constructive".

But it is. In fact, this very day January 21st 2012 might be the greatest and most important date since October 10th 2010 for a certain, constantly growing subculture, Bronies to be precise. It may not be crucial for you, but for these people all other the world it is. On that day the Brony-Community was initially fully acknowledged by the show and the creators. It never happened before in the history of television that a originally not target group fandom influenced a show in that dimension as it happened on that for Bronies historical day.

I know my entry wasn't really much formulated since I was to busy jumping around in joy, but still I demand the right to add an article about something important on Wikipedia, even if it's only for a certain group of people.

Escaped parser functions in template docs

Hi. When you cleaned up the code for Template:Infobox holiday/doc some time ago, you escaped the entire template code using <pre></pre>. This, however, had the undesirable result of escaping the {{#time}} parser functions which were used to generate dates for parameters and should have been displayed as years on the documentation page. Articles in which the code was used verbatim subsequently had their dates messed up when the year changed. Template:WikiProject United States

Greetings, I am new to Wikipedia and I have been helping out with WikiProject Kentucky as a way to get my feet wet. While doing this I noticed that some of the stuff wasn't displaying quite right and after looking at the template I think I found out why. It appears that Kumioko made some changes to the template and then no one answered his requests to have them implemented. Then when you synced the sandbox with the main page here it wiped them out. Would it be possible to fix those items in the template so the stuff for the Eastern mountain coal fields task force will display correctly? I removed the "parent" or "top" category in the hierarchy, because it is already in the more specific categories of "National Register of Historic Places in Sangamon County, Illinois" and "Houses on the National Register of Historic Places in Illinois". Copy-edit. I edited out the spaces, because it was causing the template to show noinclude and includeonly tags in a broken fashion on the transcluded category pages. Related information

Hi--I don't think adding a "Related information" link is really necessary at the bottom of an external links section (re: Alaska, Illinois, etc.) It's not recommended at MOS:LAYOUT and it's only adding kbs and clutter, so I'm removing it on Alaska and probably Illinois. --Funandtrvl (talk) 22:15, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

I personally don't like the extra navbox heading thingy, and the extra section heading, as the U.S. state navboxes are pretty self-explanatory. Also, the state articles are pretty big to begin with, so they don't need excess kbs which are just related to navboxes anyways. If you think they are worthwhile, then I would still recommend that you post a Rfc at the mos:layout talk page to see what the others think. Just where are all these kilobytes you worry about? Adding a ==Related information== section header increases the article length by a whopping 24 bytes. I appreciate that you both find the extra header distracting and superfluous, but having content in a section that has no business there drives me up the wall. (Perhaps a professional bias.) Yes, I agree it should be taken up at the talk page. I'm not a big fan of a lot of external links, because most of them should be used as references within an article, thus placing them as citations, instead of a long list of links. As for the navboxes, I just think having another header is redundant. I understand buaidh's concern that a navbox isn't an "external link", but the end of the article seems to be the best place to put the navboxes. I've noticed when looking at Wikipedia on their mobile site (like on a cellphone) the navboxes don't always display properly (sometimes you can't read the far right section of the navbox, as it's cut off the screen and rotating it doesn't help.) It would be more of a problem with the rendering of an article on a mobile platform if the navboxes were ahead of the "external links" section, because readers just might skip whatever is after it, and having an additional "related info..." section following the EL section just seems to be out of place. It's just a matter of personal preference, that's the only way I can explain it. I'm sure if the subject is brought up at the mos:layout talk page, that other editors could describe the issue with it better than I can. --Funandtrvl (talk) 23:46, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately, Wikipedia articles are prone to the addition of lengthy and often repetitive infoboxes, navigation boxes, templates, and internal and external link farms. An example of this was Minnesota a week or so ago (this version), which contains, in the See also section, links not only to the Minnesota outline, index and portal, but also links to the outlines and portals of the United States, North America, Geography, and History. Then in the Minnesota navigation box there are links to the Minnesota Index (I have since added the Minnesota Outline there as well). In the United States nav box there are links to the US book and portal. There was also some kind of geographic direction box, showing the relationship to neighbors, which is duplicative of the text, and also contained links to the Minnesota outline and index. I removed the duplication and links to information not specific to the state, for the reasons expressed at Talk:Minnesota#See_also_section.

Minnesota is a featured article, and during its FAC, a decision was made to remove the See also section entirely. I think that was correct, under the principles of WP:SEEALSO. Links should be relevant, and should appear only once, and oulines and indexes to general topics should not be included on articles for specific locales. We do not need the continued accretion of duplicative information to the Minnesota article, the other featured articles at Virginia and Oklahoma, or any other state. As indicated by the discussion here, and the edit history at Michigan and perhaps elsewhere, the issue needs to be discussed at a central location, with notice to the relevant wikiprojects, including FAC and GAC. The United States Census Bureau updates its estimates of statistical area population around April 1 of each year for July 1 of the previous year.

1. To update a Wikipedia population table, download the table code to a spreadsheet, one area per row. (For Microsoft Excel, this involves first downloading the table code to Microsoft Word, converting the code to tab-separated columns in area paragraphs, and then downloading to Excel.)
2. Sort the table rows by Census Bureau code (or alphabetically.)
3. Download the Census Bureau data next to the Wikipedia code so that the population data is on the appropriate area row. You may need to move some Wikipedia data to the appropriate row since the Census Bureau uses a different sort algorithm (which ignores spaces and expands abbreviations) than Wikipedia and most spreadsheets.
4. Replace the old population data with the new data.
5. Sort the table rows by (1) the largest population for the latest estimate and (2) the smallest previous census count.
6. Update the area population rank. If the population estimate for two or more areas is tied, use the highest rank (or lowest number) for each.
7. Upload the updated population table to Wikipedia. (For Microsoft Excel, this involves first downloading the table to Microsoft Word, replacing all tabs with paragraph marks, then uploading to Wikipedia.)

A small problem with changing to {{Assessment Class Summary}} is that it doesn't include the class SL used in WP Plants. Because the template generates the non-article list immediately after the article list, adding a manual entry for SL puts the information in the wrong place. Do you see any fix for this? Review of Vocus draft

Hi Funandtrvl, hope you don't mind my reaching out to you, but I saw that you're a WikiProject Business participant and wondered if you'd be able to look at an article draft that falls under this project's scope. I've written a new draft for the marketing software company Vocus and am looking for editors to review it since I have a COI with the topic, as I wrote the draft on behalf of the company. Due to this COI, I will not make any edits to the Vocus article myself.

The current Vocus article is not in the best shape, and the draft I've written aims to provide a clearer overview of the company's operations and products, with better sourcing. Underwater sports are not underwater versions of terrestrial sports & Category:Underwater sports templates

Hi Funandtrvl

I have noticed that you have been editing number of templates concerned with the broad class of Underwater diving.

I have undone some of your edits for Category:Underwater orienteering‎, Category: Underwater hockey‎ and Category:Underwater rugby‎, because these underwater sports are NOT adaptations of the terrestrial sports. In all cases, these sports have evolved independently and acquired the references to the terrestrial sports much later in their respective existence largely due to codification of rules at international level when the sports’ names were standardised and for the desire to attract more participation. In the case of underwater hockey, the name was changed from Octopush 25 years after its invention because a number of non-English speaking diving federations when finalising the International Rules did not like the word ‘Octopush’ despite it being an accurate reflection of the game.

I am also concerned about the creation of Category:Underwater sports templates and its addition to a number of navbars (i.e. Template:Diver training, Template:Underwater divers, Template:Recreational dive sites, Template:Diver organisations and Template:Underwater diving). As implied above, the peak article for the broad subject of ‘being underwater’ is Underwater diving of which Underwater sports is one of the sub-sets. Therefore, the Category:Underwater sports templates should be renamed Category:Underwater diving templates.

It appears that you tried to give Template:User wikipedia/Autoconfirmed a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut-and-paste-move repair holding pen. Thank you. Reversion of your edit to Clinton Road

Hi, I reverted your edit to Clinton Road. You cited MOS:layout as your reasoning for forcing sizes on all the images; however, WP:IMGSIZE says (as does MOS:IMAGES#Size) that images should be displayed with "thumb" set, leaving that up to the user to set in Preferences.

I grant that it also says images should be on the right. I generally disregard that, since it's easier on your eyes to alternate images as your eyes are already doing that to read (In fact research has shown that people generally read further along into a text illustrated with alternating images, for that reason). The reason that I moved the "left" image to the right is because it is bunching up (and running into) the bullet list on the left. Also, when you use the mobile version of Wikipedia on one's smartphone, the images that are really large are a bit harder to surf around to get to the article, then they are on a regular PC's larger monitor, thus my effort to scale down the images. Yes; bulleted lists are one of my exemptions to that rule. As for smartphones, that's why there's a number of apps that handle images differently; forcing an image size makes it harder for them to work right. Daniel Case (talk) 00:26, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I understand, but it is probably not necessary. I would just use the regular 2-dashed code. There are articles like "List of cities in Illinois" that I have on my watchlist, and there is not a week that goes by that someone doesn't put a village or town on the list, even though there are 4 lines of text explaining that there are several lists, based on the legal entity of the municipalities. Thus, no matter how hard you try, it seems to be a lost cause to get people to read instructions. Funandtrvl (talk) 17:44, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Default sort

re your new key for Project Autism

Hi, you announced that you had come up with a new "key" for Project Autism.

Are you aware that User:Muffinator has been banned from adding the {{WikiProject Autism}} tag to any articles or talk pages? This is per a Administrators' noticeboard/Incident decision at[13]

Do you think the new Autism key is in the spirit of this decision, especially since {{WikiProject Autism}} is not at all a part of the Category:WikiProject Psychology and actually goes against it, being radically different? I guess Psychology members can go there and periodically clean it out, but it seems like it just sets the project up for more trouble. Painter categories should not be added to parent artist categories

Hi Funandtrvl, I noticed you added Category:Frans Hals to Category:Artists from Haarlem with this edit, while removing it from Category:History of Haarlem. I don't follow your rationale. Frans Hals is an artist from Haarlem, and he was already in the artists-from-Haarlem category. The people he portrayed, while important to the history of Haarlem, were not artists. Also, his paintings are objects and not people. Have you done this to more artist categories named after artists? I think you need to discuss such changes first. Hi, I haven't changed any other artist categories, and I have self-reverted the edit to Frans Hals' category. I am just as confused to where to put the artist's categories, and there does not seem to be a protocol for it. For example: Category:Rembrandt is only in Category:People of the Dutch Golden Age; Category:Johannes Vermeer is in Category:History of Delft; and Category:Vincent van Gogh is in Categories:Post-Impressionism and 19th-century painters from the Northern Netherlands. So there seems to be a mix of History, the Period of Art, and the groups of painters from each country. Funandtrvl (talk) 17:08, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. I agree with you that it appears to be a mashup of solutions. I guess theoretically these should be categorized under some "Art" catagory, while flower still life painters should probably have their categories under "Flora", portrait painters under "People", and landscape artists under their country? Destroyed landmarks

You recently created a number of categories and subcategories Destroyed landmarks by country. I believe these categories are unnecessary because categories with Demolished buildings and structures by country already existed. Is it possible to merge both categories? The two words, "destroyed" and "demolished" do not mean the same thing. The "Demolished" category has buildings that were knocked down on purpose; for example, to build a new building in its place. The "Destroyed" category means that the buildings or landmarks were annihilated or knocked down on purpose, but the purpose being during a war, for example, to permanently ruin the building, in order to harm the owners, or civilization. In these days of texts, tweets and shortened attention spans, with brevity being the lingua franca of the day, I am a little surprised by your critique of my edit summaries. I am not a fan of edit summaries being longer than the actual edit itself; however, in the future, I will write out my abbreviations, so that no one will be confused about what they intrinsically mean.
