Post-move message changes

I just noticed your village pump thread about changing the post-move message was archived without any action being taken. Even though the discussion was never formally closed, it seems to me there was pretty clear consensus for the changes. Maybe you could put in an edit request at MediaWiki talk:Movepage-moved with a link to the archived discussion? Also, one small tweak: I would suggest changing the link target for the "clean up" link from WP:RMCI to the newly created Wikipedia:Cleaning up after a move (see Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Merger_of_post-move_cleanup_guides). Question from Vasilev.r.s. (15:01, 23 May 2022)

Hello, Is it ok to write an article about my grandfather? He is a man that deserves to have a personal wiki page. Regards! --Vasilev.r.s. (talk) 15:01, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

Hello @Vasilev.r.s., and welcome to Wikipedia! You must declare a conflict of interest when writing an article on a family member. Please use the article wizard to submit articles; in particular, articles on the English Wikipedia must be in English. Cheers! 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk) 18:43, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

Apology accepted. I know it's not you who were responsible for those actions, but I'm glad to know the Signpost is open to suggestions from outside the core group once again. I'll withdraw my boycott, and will be glad to submit pieces to it in the future.

Nothing for the next edition, but I should have a couple of special pieces (probably one every 2-3 months) this year, and I could make Tips and tricks a regular column. The first column would be Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2022-08-01/Tips and tricks (I need to modernize it in light of 2+ years of Citation bot development), and then I'd pick various topics the community gives feedback on, or things I ran into during the month.

Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 04:41, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

There was also User:Headbomb/New at the Signpost, but I feel it's a bit dated. Do feel free to salvage parts of it to have a call for editors and writers (especially for special pieces/one offs). And hey, maybe it'll help you get your new shoes broken in more easily! Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 04:46, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

If you could just move it to Featured content after publishing? It's missing the last two days of the month, but that's so much easier to do by hand than the whole month,. Edit summary

Hi EpicPupper, not sure I understand [1] ("i doth you FC") - could you elaborate? Also still happy to hear your (and/or JPxG's) thoughts on this thread. Regards, HaeB (talk) 22:50, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi @HaeB, sorry for the bad edit summary for what was essentially two edits. I removed the text relating to outreach management, as I think I'm doing more tasks now (feel free to suggest improvements, especially for the explanation of your side of things), and I added Adam Cuerden to Featured Content (FC). As for the thread, I don't have Facebook, but I could certainly get it to reduce the bus factor. Cheers, 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk) 22:54, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying! Yeah, it definitely makes sense to update that regarding the fact that you are now involved with the Twitter account too (nice work btw boosting stories from the last issue and finding interesting things to retweet). But I think that's better done by adding instead of subtracting - people should be able to identify and contact the person who has actually signed up to be responsible for a particular task (which e.g. I have not in case of the mailing list announcements). Let me know if you see issues with the new version. PS: apropos the mailing list announcements, I just followed up here - would be great if we could use some of the current energy to finally get these going again.

Question from The.credible.editor (00:19, 23 June 2022)

Hello mentor, I do indeed have a question.

Do you happen to know why edits to an article do not fully appear publicly? Only some of the edits appear while the other edits don't. It's a weird glitch and I'm wondering why it is occurring.

I am happy to continue editing on Wikipedia.

Thank you, The.credible.editor --The.credible.editor (talk) 00:19, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hi EpicPupper. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at WP:PERM in case your user right is time limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. – Joe (talk) 14:08, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 July newsletter

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
  • Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.

Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article nomination, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Adoption?

I understand if you're busy, but I've started trying to edit Wikipedia seriously (or at least reduce my number of messages on the Teahouse) (ignore my 1:5 ratio of completed drafts to created drafts) and I wanted to try adoption for guidance. Are you interested? Thanks — VORTEX3427 (Talk!) 14:35, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Vortex3427! Nice to meet you 😀 I'd be happy to adopt you! I've added you to my list of adopters on the adopters page, as a start. I'd love to discuss your goals in adoption; what would you like out of it? Are you looking for a mentor to provide answers to questions every now or then, a detailed program / "school" that teaches policy, or something else? I'd also like to add that you should never be ashamed of asking questions - it is a natural part of learning and very experienced editors do too! Cheers! 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk) 20:54, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! I guess I'd like someone who could answer my questions and give me tips on how to improve articles, editing or show me the ins-and-outs of Wikipedia. — VORTEX3427 (Talk!) 05:47, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
Great to hear @Vortex3427, I can do that! I'll be keeping an eye out on your edits in case I have anything worthwhile to show you, or any tips. Feel free to ask me any questions here on my talk page!
In the meantime, I'd also love to share a few tips to start out:
  • I see that you sometimes work with categories. Try using HotCat, it makes things a breeze!
  • When working on drafts, I'd recommend looking for at least one source listed positively on WP:RSP.
  • Try out some beta features!

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello Frostly,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

Question from Militia9 (17:34, 13 August 2022)

Hi Eric, I have recently joined, mostly to start a new page and to make additions to current pages, how many edits do I need to make before I can start a new page? (Have already completed the tutorial tickboxes)

Thanks,

Ben --Militia9 (talk) 17:34, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi Militia9, welcome to Wikipedia! Help:Your first article is quite a informative page that you might find useful, it includes an article wizard which allows you to create a draft and submit it for review. A reviewer will look at it and move it to the mainspace (where the articles are) or give feedback after you've finished the draft and submitted. Justiyaya 18:07, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
