Editing
How do I edit, add or delete items in the Reference list in a biography Cruboss (talk) 04:38, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Cruboss: thanks for reaching out! At the top of the editing toolbar, there should be a button that says "cite". This will allow you to either enter a URL and have a reference made automatically, or you can make one manually using the middle tab. You can also use this button to re-use references if they are cited more than once in the article. The actual "References" section cannot be edited, because it is what is called a template. Template perform actions based on different inputs, which makes editors' jobs easier. I took a look at your edits to Tom Wigley; hopefully this info can help you to finish formatting your additions there! If you need further help please reach out here and I can try to point you in the right direction. Fritzmann (message me) 14:03, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
Mistake in the page related to Spanish Navy ship Ysabel (A-06)
Good night from Spain!
I just want to inform you about an error in the name of the ship, actually her name is only "Ysabel" without "Reina", If you could cjange it in the spanish navy ships list too it would be great.
I know that this must be seen as a stupidity, but I like to see that the information is well recorded.
On the other hand, your job is amazing and I like to congratulate you for the time and efford you put in collect all the information about the ships that the spanish navy has.
Thanks and have a nice day! :) 85.251.92.214 (talk) 19:30, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
- Good afternoon from the United States, 85.251.92.214! I appreciate your attention to detail, it's definitely important. The sources that I used called the ship both Reina Ysabel and Ysabel, but looking at the Spanish wikipedia page and the native language sources, Ysabel certainly seems to be the more common name. I'll take the steps to go ahead and change all of the names, but will keep in a mention of the name Reina Ysabel in case people search using that term. Thanks again! If you're enthusiastic about editing the encyclopedia too, it would be great to have you! Fritzmann (message me) 19:39, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

Creating a Page/Article In Wikipedia
Why is it so hard to create and edit a Article in wikipedia — Preceding unsigned comment added by WorldIsNice112 (talk • contribs) 09:28, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hello WorldIsNice112! Is there a particular part of creating an article that you are having a problem with? I recommend reading the guide on creating your first article, but if you still have questions I can help with those. Fritzmann (message me) 20:20, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
Question from Oestereetstertje (09:57, 6 August 2023)
Hello, I am currently intimidated by Wikipedia, trying to start editing. I am a 67 years old person and my mother tongue is Nederlands (Dutch or Flemish). First problem: English guidelines containing a lot of IT technical terms are hard! Second problem: my domain is the history of cartography, so I'm not sure where I fit in Wikipedia. I've elaborated an overview of errors/contradictions in articles on Wikipedia on the reception of Ptolemy's Geographia in the languages I master sufficiently (Dutch, French, English, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese). How should I implement all this? Am I allowed to do this? Thank you for your patience! --Oestereetstertje (talk) 09:58, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hey there Oestereetstertje! First of all, I just wanted to say that there is absolutely a place that you fit in Wikipedia. Secondly, I have been editing for... I think eight years now on and off, and I still regularly make mistakes. The policy and guidelines are extremely daunting. Your expertise in cartography and your multilingualism are huge assets, though, and it makes me super excited that someone with your skillset is considering editing. There are a lot of resources out there and tons of people who are
willing towant to help you in any way they can. I'll list a few here, but the only other thing I'll say that it's totally okay to just make mistakes and learn from them. A lot of the responses to mistakes feel pretty cold and impersonal, but as soon as people realize you are acting in good faith and are just going through the learning process, they will go out of their way to provide advice and assistance.- For a brief and game-ified intro to Wikipedia, I recommend The Wikipedia Adventure. It's a little gimmicky, but I wish I had it when I first started editing.
- Check out WikiProjects to see if any of them collaborate on content that interests you. These are awesome places to find people who nerd out about the same things you do, and who can answer technical questions. A cursory search found me the Cartography subproject of Military history, but there are dozens of WikiProjects out there.
- The Teahouse is a new-user oriented forum for asking questions. They are extremely kind and patient, and I have found some great mentors over there. If you have general editing questions, that is a good place to go.
- Your sandbox (found in the bar of links at the top of your screen) is a great place to edit before actually publishing, especially if you are writing new content. You can play around with things in there to see if they work without fear of anyone interfering. You can also use it as a place to ask for input on your content from other people (like me!)
- I really do hope you'll stick around! I am your designated mentor, so if you ever have more specific questions I will absolutely do my best to answer them quickly and accurately. Asking me here is the best place, since I will get a notification that you've messaged me. Very Respectfully, Fritzmann (message me) 17:15, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Fritzmann, I honestly tried The Wikipedia Adventure but somehow I stranded after the welcome I got on a Talk page. I tried and retried and finally I gave up. I am a 67 year old and I am NOT on social media (yes, people like me do exist) so not familiar at all with these platforms. I guess I'll have to leave this to younger people or at least to people with kids they can get help from :) Sorry. Oestereetstertje (talk) 09:49, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- Dear Fritzmann, when I made my account there was no sign that any tutorial or whatsoever existed in my mother tongue (Dutch). Now I see there is even a Wikipedia Belgium but you seem to need an account, different from the one I have. I admit that now I am totally confused: where am I??? How is this whole Wikipedia world constructed?? What do I have to do to simply try to contribute to this wonderful thing called Wikipedia? Sorry, I'm getting more and more lost here. Oestereetstertje (talk) 18:07, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Oestereetstertje: so there is actually a "Wikipedia" in pretty much every language out there, English is just the largest one by far. Many of the smaller language Wikipedias are honestly easier to get into because there is more information to add, and the community is more intimate. All of the wikipedias put together make up the "Wikimedia Foundation" which runs the servers and handles some administrative things. If you are more comfortable in Dutch or Flemish, I would absolutely recommend you start contributing at the Dutch Wikipedia! The website should have the same setup, tools, and navigation over there, but hopefully in a more comfortable language. Translation between wikipedias is also very valuable! I'm not very experienced with it, but if you hover over "contributions" in the top right corner of your screen, there should be a dropdown called "translations" that will show you how to translate articles. Hopefully that helps some but if not I can absolutely elaborate more, or put you in touch with someone knowledgeable from the Dutch Wikipedia. Fritzmann (message me) 18:15, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
Question for GAN
Sorry, if I may, I believe one of my GAN has been neglected: Bigyra. I noticed you told Chiswick Chap to message you if they had any neglected GAN, so I may as well try. Any chance it could get reviewed, if it is not an inconvenience? I think Eukaryote was also recently nominated for GA by Chiswick Chap. —Snoteleks 🦠 17:37, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, I can absolutely take a look at both of those. I'm currently working on getting Hypericum perforatum to GA but in between edits I should definitely have time to do those reviews! Fritzmann (message me) 17:40, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
Question from CommanderJänsen (05:25, 10 August 2023)
Hello, Fritzmann2002. I am a new editor to Wikipedia, and I am very curious on how to get started, and what tools I could use to help me. I love to read articles on Wikipedia, especially ones related to military conflicts, and things of that nature. I decided to join Wikipedia as a good way to build my article writing skills, and to help contribute to a common cause. If you could point me to the right direction, that would be amazing. Thanks! --CommanderJänsen (talk) 05:25, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- CommanderJänsen, first off, welcome! There are a great deal of resources to help you begin to edit, and it sounds like you want to edit for all the right reasons. Starting out can be quite daunting, that's for sure. The first place I would direct you to is The Wikipedia Adventure. It's a little gimmicky, but it lays out very well all the basics you might need for editing. If you want to jump right into editing, that's great to! I recommend visiting the Military History WikiProject. It's a group of people that work together to improve articles on military history. They have some tasks over there you can work on. For your first edits, I recommend reading through some of your favorite articles (especially those that are more niche) and looking for grammatical or spelling errors that you can fix. This will allow you to become more familiar with how to edit.
- At any time, if you have questions you are more than welcome to ask them here. I'm your assigned mentor, and I am happy to help whenever and however I can. Fritzmann (message me) 20:14, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

Source check confirmation
Hey Fritzmann2002, I was reviewing Talk:Eukaryote/GA1 for the GA drive and noticed that you haven't mentioned which references you checked in the review. Could you please confirm whether you conducted a source review before passing the article? — Golden talk 20:41, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Golden, thanks for swinging by. I must have neglected to include it in the review, but I've performed a ref sweep that found no apparent issues. I'll expound here, and if you think I should addend it to the review I absolutely will.
- [2] does state that Excavata is paraphyletic
- [20] is accurately used to prove claims about sterenes and the time of eukaryogenesis
- [22] provides an extensive explanation of the endomembrane system that is summarized
- [26],[27],[28] are all refs to the BSCB, an expert authority on cell biology, and summarize their systems well
- [31] provides the "oxidizing" part of the claim in the preceding clause
- [53] is accurately summarized by the statement that amoeba are anciently sexual
- [71], Knoll does suggest Eukaryotes arose 2.2 billion years ago
- Additionally (I think I did remember to include this) Earwig shows an exceptionally low score of 5.7%. Let me know if there's anything else I can take care of! Fritzmann (message me) 14:02, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- No problem, Fritzmann2002. I just needed to know if you had checked the sources before I could validate the review. Thank you for providing detailed clarification. — Golden talk 14:17, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

- To add an image to an article using the visual editor, edit the article and click the "insert" dropdown box at the top of the editing menu (it should be above the article title). Then click "images and media" and search for the image you want to add. If the image is not on the Commons (where images for Wikipedia are stored) then it cannot be added to the article. Images that are free use or in the public domain can be uploaded, but there is a rather hefty amount of information you should understand about copyright before you attempt to do so. I hope that helps you; Very Respectfully, Fritzmann (message me) 16:38, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from Ink&Books (23:33, 12 September 2023)
Hello! I am brand new to editing, and yesterday I added a source to the Secretum (book) page. The reference was to a Project Gutenberg translation of the work which I also cited a quote from. Someone has since come along and changed the citation - I was trying to cite the dates from the introduction, and they have removed my citation and added a different one at the end of the sentence from a quotation (which is fine, but it should be a second quotation, not removing the citation I had placed). I then used the same citation to cite a quote. After the next editor removed my initial citation, the second citation is saying that there is no reference ([1]). Since I quoted from that source directly, I would really like for it to be represented there. I want to add back in both of my citations if that is possible, but I'm not seeing how to do that! Thank you in advance for your help! --Ink&Books (talk) 23:33, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, I have figured out how to add back in my citations, so I think everything should be in proper order now. There is still a lot missing from the page in terms of citations. I'm hoping I did everything correctly! Ink&Books (talk) 23:50, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Ink&Books, thanks for adding those references! It looks like the other editor just made a mistake while tidying things up. You did a great job with the references, all I did was change the format of one from being "cite web" (which is used for websites) to "cite book" (which is used for books even if they are hosted online). The best advice I can give you is to keep trying things out; trial and error is the most effective way to become a better editor. If you ever need further help, want to collaborate on an article, or need ideas for ways to contribute, please feel free to drop me a message. I hope you'll consider continuing to edit! Very Respectfully, Fritzmann (message me) 01:07, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

The first edition of our new monthly contest had perhaps a little less participation than I hoped for, but it still resulted in a huge amount of content work, mainly focussed on de-stubbing articles on little-known species, although we did also see two GAs for Holozoa and Hypericum perforatum. Overall, over 60 articles were improved, with most going from stubs or redlinks to fully fleshed out articles. The winner this month was Simongraham, who improved 21 articles about spiders, mainly to B and C class, and racked up 70 points, over twice the next highest. Hopefully, we'll continue to see such great work next month, with even more participants and even more articles improved.

Question from TheOneAndOnlyXYZ (22:36, 1 November 2023)
Hello there, quick formatting question! I've been working on this article over the past few days (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:After_Hours_(quartet)), and am having problems with the formatting in the category section, in particular having the categories within a box. Is there anything I can do about this, or is this something that would be fixed after the review process? Thank you! --TheOneAndOnlyXYZ (talk) 22:36, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hey, great question @TheOneAndOnlyXYZ! It's probably because you are adding the categories using the Visual Editor. If you switch to the Source Editor by hitting the switch editor "pen" icon at the top right of the editing box, you should be able to fix it. Right now it looks like:
- [[:Category:Professional a cappella groups]]
- What it should look like is
- [[Category:Professional a cappella groups]] (without the colon at the start)
- That turns it into a real category, instead of a link to a category page. I'll let you give it a go but if it's still giving you problems I can also fix the categories. If you'd like any additional feedback before you submit the article, I'd be happy to provide it! Fritzmann (message me) 23:11, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

The article List of Liberia-flagged cargo ships has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Over 2400 ships under this flag, but article with only some ships under this flag. Imagine a 10-ship article about flag with 2 400 ships
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. KittenBroEeev (talk) 17:32, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Question from Raxedo (12:01, 9 November 2023)
Hi, we are new. Could you please suggest a edit for new brands --Raxedo (talk) 12:01, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Raxedo hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. If you are a part of the company, you inherently have a non-neutral point of view and are discouraged from creating or editing articles related to your company. However, if you believe the company meets notability guidelines, you are welcome to request an article to be created. Fritzmann (message me) 16:55, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from ToxELB1025 (05:01, 16 November 2023)
Hello Fritz,
Thank you for being my mentor.
I have one question, my boss has a Wikipedia article about himself and is now being nominated for deletion. I would greatly appreciate your advise on how to convince the editor/admin not to delete it as the details on the said article are all facts and we can provide any needed supporting documents.
Thanks in advance for your response.
Best regards, Errol --ToxELB1025 (talk) 05:01, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello ToxELB1025, I would advise you to read the help guides that CNMall41 left on your talk page. Furthermore, the reason the article is being deleted is not because the information is not factual. It is because the subject does not meet notability standards, meaning that there is not adequate sourcing of the subject to warrant a wikipedia article. It looks like the result will be that the article on Deepen Shah will be merged into the one on buzzd, with the information that is accurate being maintained and making the latter article better. Hello sir how can I write about anyone biography in Wikipedia --Ankuryadav020202 (talk) 10:29, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Please be sure to read these guidelines and ensure that the subject is notable before you create it. As a new user, you will have to go through the Articles for Creation, which can be found at this link. Just follow the instructions there, and let me know if you need further guidance. By the authority vested in me by myself it gives me great pleasure to present you with this special, very exclusive award created just for we few, we happy few, this band of brothers, who have shed sweat, tears and probably blood, in order to be able to proudly claim "I too have taken an article to Featured status". - It's very rare to get FAC right on your first nomination, something I couldn't achieve back then, so you should be extra proud. I hope you keep them coming. FrB.TG (talk) 19:23, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you Gog the Mild and FrB.TG, it was a great learning experience. I am definitely a better editor coming out the other side, and look forward to working with you all again in the future! Fritzmann (message me) 00:33, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Your GA nomination of Hypericum bupleuroides
The article Hypericum bupleuroides you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Hypericum bupleuroides for comments about the article, and Talk:Hypericum bupleuroides/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has never appeared on the Main Page as a "Did you know" item, and has not appeared within the last year either as "Today's featured article", or as a bold link under "In the news" or in the "On this day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear at DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On this day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Triple Crown
Congrats on you awesome work Fritzmann2002. If applying to upgrade the award in the future, please provide authorship links as requested in the instructions though. It's not such a problem for the standard triple crowns but for higher tier awards we won't process nominations without authorship links as the backlog is high and it adds a lot of time to search manually. Question from Cobbedcorn (22:25, 2 December 2023)
Hello Fritzmann2002 :) Happy to make your acquaintance. What is the protocol for adding sections to an article? --Cobbedcorn (talk) 22:25, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Cobbedcorn! Here is a manual that details how and when to add section headings to an article. It is really up to an editor's discretion, though. If you think an idea deserves its own section in an article, then it is your choice to add it. Feel free to link the article you are working on an I can give it a look as well. That way, if other editors disagree you are able to have a civil conversation. Please let me know here if you have further questions. Fritzmann (message me) 17:47, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

How do you include citations and add referencig styles.
