Infobox rugby league biography

Hey there. I do vaguely reacall the talk, but can't seem to find where we decided to go down that route. It is grammatically correct to have it 'As of', it would need to 'Correct as at the' in the current format. Will leave it as it currently stands though.Londo06 09:12, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

As at points to a particular point in time. The data is correct at that point in time. As of refers to a point in time on or after that date. The data will be correct from that point onwards. As in, This shop will be closed on Sundays as of 2 August. Using the phrase correct at ... would be simpler. Florrieleave a note 13:17, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
I've got no problem with correct going in to make it a little better. 'at' would be right for time, ie 1300, 4pm, etc. It would be 'of' for a date though. As of would include that date, I get the idea of tying it to that date. However as of also does that. An example These details are correct as of 25 July, 2005. against These details are correct as at 25 July, 2005. I'll have another look for the discussion on the matter though.Londo06 13:58, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you mean by no problem with correct going in - correct has always been in the template. As for 'at' would be right for time, ie 1300, when the five tildes are used correctly, there always is a time recorded as well as a date. Regardless, it isn't necessary for a time to be present, it is perfectly correct with a date. By all means bring up the point again but it hardly seems important given the outstanding decisions yet to be reached regarding the new template. Quibbling over the subjective use of 'at' and 'of' seems trivial to me. Florrieleave a note 15:16, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Colours

Yeah, no problem. I'll just finish up the Parramatta ones and leave it for the day.Londo06 17:45, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, no gripe from me. I said that I'd leave it for the day, and I left it for a couple. No-one raised the issue and as I was bored watching the Liverpool match I decided to multi-task; watching the Sunderland v Liverpool out of the corner of one eye and adding colours to some infoboxes. Once the request came through from yourself I immediately responded that I would finish off those already started and then cease for the day.Londo06 12:13, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

DYK: Mal Cochrane

Updated DYK query On 16 August, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Mal Cochrane, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Frank Johnson

Nice job Florrie on Frank Johnson. Is it just me or do the old, retired and dead seem to have more interesting life tales ?. I'll see what I can find on the Pt Kembla question. -Sticks66 23:59, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I've taken your advice :) I loved doing the article on George Taylforth as well. Really interesting reading the ICAC report! It can be quite difficult finding on-line (or hard copy) references for these older players, so it feels really worthwhile collating the information into one article on Wikipedia. Thanks for looking into the Wollongong/Port Kembla thing. Florrieleave a note 08:08, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Don't start me

Aargghh...that infobox voting process !! Anyway two practical questions if I may. 1) I recall that you may have cropped the photo on this page. I found the crop to Watson and loaded to his article. Did you not also crop to Micky Dore ? and 2) Sometimes when I type words at the end of an image descriptor (to the image in situ on the article) the words appear (see Viv Thicknesse), other times not (see Micky Dore); yet my script seems identical. Can you see what I'm missing ? -Sticks66 04:33, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

And amazing the response it is getting. I didn't realise we had so many active members! You left off 'thumb' from Micky Dore's image. Though why that should matter I don't know. I'll have a look for that other crop - I'm pretty sure I loaded it up to WP, if not I'll do it again. Florrieleave a note 09:09, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
It's okay, he is there. M.J. Dore 1907 Florrieleave a note 09:12, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Thankyou but I will lean on you to ask another cropping favour. I've uploaded an image that you can see on this page 1927-28 Waratahs tour of Britain, France and Canada and there's another here photographthat I want to upload; both could badly do with cropping. In the case of the latter I don't expect you to do the initial image upload, but if I do it could you crop it ? Warm rgds -Sticks66 09:30, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Here you go. [1], [2]. I did them full-body as the Cyril Towers pic was/seemed to be marked for cropping. If I misunderstood that bit, let me know. Won't take long to crop their heads. Florrieleave a note 12:09, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Thankyou so much. But the photo in the Waratah article is at the bottom of the page. You'll see what I mean when you see it.-Sticks66 12:27, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Ah! What would you like done with it? Just the bad edges cropped or were you wanting a particular player? Florrieleave a note 12:35, 21 August 2008 (UTC) ETA: Don't worry, the pic isn't big enough to crop anyone individually! I'll get rid of the rubbish. Florrieleave a note 12:36, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
[3], [4]. I did two - in one I cropped out the dodgy looking bloke on the left. In the other he is still there in case you think he is worth keeping! Have you seen Jeff's write-up on clubs for inclusion in infoboxes? It's on his user page. Florrieleave a note 12:43, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Ta. I like the dodgy bloke in (he's no doubt a famous RU player and now I've started writing more RU articles I'll find out who in due course). Yes I usually side with Jeff one questions of notability of leagues & grades, but I really don't think I can stick with this infobox polling process (everytime I think it's over....) 1 more question if I may. There's a script that enables one to posisiotn the contents box just where one wants it on an article. Do you know it ? Thx again-Sticks66 13:52, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Yes, there's a TOC page - there's tips and tricks in there for placement. I think Jeff's suggestions are the way to go but I can imagine it would be a nightmare to push through when we can't even agree on minor stuff. Cheers! Florrieleave a note 14:02, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

They're all in situ now here. Ta -Sticks66

Thanks

I don't know whether your leaving Wikipedia or just not wanting to edit RL articles any more, but thanks for all your contributions over the past year or two. Thanks, it was greatly appreciated it will be missed just as much.  The Windler talk  06:37, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

No, still here, just taking a break from the Project, not editing. Florrieleave a note 07:17, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Brian Hambly

Hi, sorry about duplicating the reference. We were both working on the article around the same time, and I did not notice that you had added the same ref. Cheers, WWGB (talk) 05:50, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

No worries at all - my own fault as I'd left my edit screen open while I went to try and find another ref for his birth date, as 1938 doesn't tally with being 71 when he died. You don't happen to have a ref (other than Whiticker) do you? Florrieleave a note 09:05, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Mathew Head

I don't want to kick off about this one, I respect you as an editor, however the dash is not predicated by there being a particular length of contract, just the fact that he is still with the club. Were he to have his contract ripped up it would just be 2008. That he is still with the Wests Tigers it would be 2008-, indicating the fact that he is still with that club. When he joins the Dragons it would revert to simply 2008, with the Dragons years being 2009-. These are wikipedia standards that I have seen throughout the sporting infoboxes. I shall leave the Mathew Head article as it stands, just to let things simmer a little.Londo06 09:22, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

You have no grounds to 'kick off' about anything. Because you say you have seen it in other sporting infoboxes doesn't make it correct or a 'standard'. I prefer known policy: Endash - The en dash is used in ranges, such as 6–10 years, read as "six to ten years". There is no 'to' involved in a one year, current or otherwise, contract.
And keep your condescending tone off my talk-page. Florrieleave a note 09:55, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
There was no condescending tone intended, I even read it before signing, probably in a happy tone though. Totally meant to be cordial, apologies if it sounded different when read.Londo06 10:03, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Reply

I was considering the {{no break}} template over all parameters, in the template. But then I though it may be abbused in some way.

I could make other templates, I'll think about it later.  The Windler talk  21:21, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Re:Tildes v text

Hey, sorry about the late reply. Personally I prefer the text, not just because it looks better but rather because it is strongly encouraged. You may notice that in "my preferences", there is an option to change date formatting - these options only work with linked dates, hence why I prefer to format it this way in articles. MDM (talk) 06:55, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

No worries, I've been offline for a bit anyway. All that preferences stuff with dates is now 'deprecated' and discouraged rather than encouraged. So, unless the wikilinking of a date has a direct relevance to an article about that date, it doesn't need to be done. See MOS:UNLINKDATES. Cheers, Florrieleave a note 08:20, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

South Sydney

Hi, thanks for your assistance on the edit war with the 2 POV pushers. I'm a bit rusty re procedures for controlling this so I appreciate the assistance. Sattlersjaw (talk) 02:56, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Everton DasentHere are some verifiable sources demonstrating that Peter Holmes a Court's tenure as executive chairman was less than successful and ended due to a falling out with Russell Crowe.

  • "Souths lost $4m in the first year of the Holmes a Court chairmanship." Brent Read, The Australian, May 28, 2008
  • "Now he's fallen out with Holmes a Court, who does not want to spend any more of his money on Souths. Once close, their talks are now brief. No doubt there have been lengthier, more stable relationships in Crowe's working life but the volatile break-ups have been there as well." Ray Chesterton, Daily Telegraph, May 27, 2008
  • "Figuratively and literally, Souths are once again broke. Under the watch of executive chairman Holmes a Court, the Rabbitohs lost a whopping $4.2 million last financial year. It was a sobering result given the largesse that accompanied Crowe and Holmes a Court's takeover in June 2006." Josh Massoud, Daily Telegraph, May 27, 2008
  • "SOUTH Sydney's revolution under Peter Holmes a Court fizzled out last night after the Rabbitohs co-owner was dumped as chairman by business partner Russell Crowe." Josh Massoud, Daily Telegraph, May 27, 2008
  • "But just last week, Mr Holmes a Court warned he could not guarantee the club's survival following a $4.2 million loss in 2006/07. That scary public statement was believed to be the final straw for Crowe, who was already at loggerheads with Holmes a Court over a number of decisions he had made." Josh Massoud, Daily Telegraph, May 27, 2008

Holmes a Court claimed he had stood down in some news articles, but he also claimed he had been in the job for 2 years which was incorrect.

It is fair to comment in the Rabbitohs history that Peter Holmes a Court was most likely forced to stand down.

It is also fair that the websites www.rebelrabbitohs.com be added as a link for those interested in the club, its supporters and its history. The website has files, articles, video, news, audio resources and a vibrant discussion forum. The site has been active since March 2008 and continues to grow. The website is in the top 25 Google results, the top 5 Yahoo results, the top 5 Ask results, and the top 5 AOL results in a 'rabbitohs' search. To leave the website out of any mention as a link is not honest in describing the South Sydney Rabbitohs diaspora. Everton Dasent (talk) 22:16, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your assistance. I noticed in the edit history for the page the person who continually deletes this like lists it as a 'hobby' page. I think that is dishonest. The website has a legitimate private domain, dedicated to the South Sydney Rabbitohs with resources that cannot be found elsewhere on the internet.Everton Dasent (talk) 06:39, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

australian schoolboy

Its going through discussion at the moment. It should be passed that they will be removed. The problem is the editor who keeps reverting any attempt I make to remove it from Karmichael Hunt. His/her justification was that any team that had an article got though, but obviously didn't see or turning a blind eye to the previous discussions before. I'll keep you posted.  The Windler talk  02:41, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

In that case I'll "re-join" and vote! Thanks for the heads up. Florrieleave a note 02:42, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
You don't have to, but its good to see you still continuing with your RL contributions. Dont forget to remove the "new=yes" from the infobox if you updated so its one less for me to do as I slowly but surely go through them all here.  The Windler talk  02:48, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I do try to pick them up. I like your MOS, by the way. Not that it will be an easy road by the the looks of it. Florrieleave a note 02:53, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
I thought we had gone through all of this too. Alexanderson has just come back from a long spell from the looks of it and must have missed all of the discussion. I'm kind of torn in trying to tell him to revert all his edits (100 in total), given how much work he put into it, but in all fairness it was decided that only senior teams would be included in the infobox. MDM (talk) 05:32, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
No, he was there. [5] That vote on coaching information clearly spelled out (to me, at least, the stance on playing information). The same rules for inclusion of playing data should apply. This means coaching of junior representative teams such as Australian Schoolboys and non-top-level teams such as those in the Queensland Cup should be in the body text only. And yet, here we are again... Florrieleave a note 13:44, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

York

Andrews (ABC) lists the team - "C.York"; Centenary of RL has a team photo - "C.York"; but Whiticker's Captaining the Kangaroos has full names of 1928 1st test side and calls him Colin. So we have two sources calling him Colin and one conflicting source from the same author calling him Charles. Your call but I suggest you leave the article named Colin and if we find out later his birth name was Charles that can go in the i/box. Intriguing career BTW : 4 1st grade games in five years at Balmain then he goes onto State & Nat representation in his final year from Queanbeyan. (At least I find that intriguing !) -Sticks66 06:59, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes, he's worth expanding the article. I'll do a redirect page for Charles York to Colin York, I think, in case anyone looks for him by that name. Got to be the same fellow, just confusion over the first-name. Florrieleave a note 13:42, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

This too also calls him Colin http://www.rugbyleague.com.au/arl/kangaroos/register.php -Sticks66 00:50, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Picture crazy

I've gone picture crazy in the last few days on some of these RU articles I'm writing; which got me thinking how I could leverage your earlier hard work on the RL old-timers. Have a look at this. It's a minor point but I'd love to be able to make the Dave Brown the same size as all others, any clues ? Rgds -Sticks66 13:23, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

The Dave Brown pic won't increase in size while it is in the thumb frame. It will reduce nicely but will not increase in size beyond the 130px or whatever it is uploaded at. The only way I could get it to increase was to remove 'thumb'.

Pic without the thumb frame Dave Brown at 150px. I had a look but I can't find any code that will over-ride it. I'm not sure whether I can edit the original uploaded pic and increase the size as there is a fair use tag associated with it. Is the pic available anywhere else? Did you try the pics in a vertical gallery? I wonder if that would make a difference? Florrieleave a note 10:28, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Viv Farnsworth

Found this User:Sticks66/Work Space 2 for that Viv Farnsworth article you wrote. Do you want to crop it neatly before I add to the article  ? (& maybe fix my typo in naming the shot while you're at it, d'oh -Sticks66 13:41, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

That book cover rationale

Are you familiar with that rationale used for uploading a book cover picture such as on Brad Fittler and Arthur Beetson. Seems to me that the rationale is that the article is discussing the book in question wheras of course the articles in these cases are discussing the subject of the book. Seems like the uploads get left alone though. Do you have a POV ? -Sticks66 13:33, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

That's how I've always understood it - a book cover can be used to illustrate an article about the book. I guess you could give it a go, seeing the ones you mentioned have survived so far. Which cover are you looking at using? Florrieleave a note 16:00, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
I'm actually the one who uploaded those images a while back. In doing so I've always been careful to place the image in the section of the text where the release of the book is mentioned (so the book's cover accompanies a 'discussion' of sorts about the book itself) such as with Wayne Bennett. I'm concerned about a few of them which other editors have moved to the infobox (so the book's cover appears to be used as a means of identification of the individual). Nothing has come up yet I think because a rationale exists and that keeps bots away. But if they're investigated further there's a risk they'll be deleted. So I think having the book covers away from the body text where their release is mentioned should be discouraged.--Jeff79 (talk) 06:36, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Was looking at using cover of Sir Nicholas Shehadie's A Life Worth Living for article on him. -Sticks66 12:23, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
And yes, it has now happened with Brad Fittler. Book covers must be kept out of the infobox.--Jeff79 (talk) 13:03, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
Try using it as Jeff said above - in his article but in a section where you could mention the book? Florrieleave a note 13:05, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Australia

As you say no consensus agreed, and as such it should remain the way it was. Alexsanderson83 09:42, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

I have no recollection of that, nor coming across that at any point in any archived material. Alexsanderson83 09:57, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

categories

Its the other way round. I thought it was right but just realised, I won't bother fixing it unless some one requests. Category:Infobox rugby league biography templates updated is the category for new=yes (meaning they need updating).

While Category:Infobox rugby league biography templates needing updating have been updated meaning "new=yes" has been taken from them.  The Windler talk  11:17, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

That's better! As long as I'm not going crazy, I'll just book mark the proper one. Cheers. Florrieleave a note 11:51, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
