[edit]Thanks, Elkman. I would really enjoy casually collaborating. I'll pitch in whenever possible, and if you could do the same thing, that'd be great. Thanks again! "~~Bob Amnertiopsis~~" (talk) 16:03, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
Hey, I'm not finding this in the list of sites, what made you think it was on the list? Murderbike (talk) 15:29, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
- I had to do a little bit of digging to find this one. I saw it at Special:Newpages and figured there was a chance that it was on the National Register, but a direct query for Lothian, Maryland didn't find anything. I did a county query for Anne Arundel County and found a listing for St. James Church in Bristol, MD. I checked against the NRHP database and found that its alternate name is "St. James, Lothian", and the year of construction, 1763, matched the article. So, I'm assuming it's the same church. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 15:49, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
- I came to the same conclusion and added an infobox. I just noticed someone has added a "notability" tag.--Appraiser (talk) 17:06, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

nris datbase dump
[edit]Does your nris database on which the Elkman's infobox generator is based have any information about when sites are delisted? I'm almost ready to "publish" a draft of the RHP in Ramsey County and I'm sure some on the list have been de-listed. I want to leave them on the page (perhaps at the bottom) with a "de-listed date", but I don't have those readily available. Also, does the county map look large to you? I can't seem to get it to shrink. Thanks.--Appraiser (talk) 17:25, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
- The query I'm using only shows properties that are listed on the National Register. There are a few properties that have been delisted:
- The old Smith Avenue High Bridge
- The old Wabasha Street Bridge
- William Dahl House, 136 13th St.
- Selby Avenue Bridge
- There are also some listings within the database such as "determined eligible/owner objection", "date received/pending nomination", and "date received/pending owner objection". My queries don't list any of those properties, though -- they only list properties with a status of "LI", for listed.
- Also, as you may have noticed, I adjusted the size of the map on your page. I hope you don't mind if I make any other edits -- but if you do mind, let me know and I'll hold off until it goes live. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 18:08, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
- That's fine; I'll be moving it soon anyway. So "frame" cancels a size spec.?
- It would be nice to know of any pending nominations.
- I had determined that the three bridges no longer existed. The Dahl house was moved. This afternoon I'll see if it's on Jefferson Avenue, where it's supposed to be; I'm going to pick up the last of the St. Paul photos needed today. Do you know if the Saint Paul Municipal Grain Terminal still exists and where it is exactly? The given geo coordinates can't be right.--Appraiser (talk) 18:50, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
- I think the Saint Paul Municipal Grain Terminal is actually still there. It's behind the St. Paul High Bridge power plant, next to the river. If you take Shepard Avenue toward downtown St. Paul, turn off at Randolph Avenue and head toward the river. It appears to be a brick building right along the river. I think the coordinates here in Wikipedia are correct, but the address is 266 Randolph, not 266 Shepard Road. (Shepard Road used to run right along the river, but they built a new one further inland and renamed the old one as an extension of Randolph.) --Elkman (Elkspeak) 19:12, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
- ah. I see the problem. The infobox generator produced different coords than what's in the article.--Appraiser (talk) 19:28, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

South Carolina-NRHP-stub
[edit]Hi Elkman -- The deservedly famous Elkman NRHP infobox generator is generating stub template text such as "South Carolina-NRHP-stub" when the correct stub template text would be "SouthCarolina-NRHP-stub". I think that no spaces apply in all the stub template names for all multiple word states. Hope this helps. :) Your fan, doncram (talk) 01:09, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
- I fixed it, so it shouldn't be putting that extra space in there now. When I was checking through the various stub templates, I noticed that Georgia is actually {{GeorgiaUS-NRHP-stub}}, and the category is Category:Registered Historic Places in Georgia (U.S. state). I fixed those errors in the infobox generator too. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 03:42, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

NRHP data grabber tool
[edit]How current is the database that the tool accesses. According to this story, the Roanoke Building in Chicago was named an NHL in the first two months of this year. It is not showing up on the tool in a search for Roanoke in Illinois.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 14:40, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
- It's more than a year old at this point. I got my data from this link at the National Register Information System, and they haven't updated since January of last year. I wish they'd update that data, since it would make things easier for all of us, but they're probably understaffed or they have other priorities. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 15:04, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
- I just started creating the Roanoke Building article. I will get around to adding a template by hand (hopefully before it makes the main page next weekend at WP:DYK.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 01:41, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit]I see you beat me to the revert. (Of course I couldn't have blocked the IP, so that just as well). In case you hadn't noticed, I just wanted to bring to your attention that the all the "Lic ____" and similar red-letter accounts clearly are socks. They all have a single clean edit immediately after the IP vandalizes the article in an attempt to preserve the vandalism. Typically this is the only edit the account makes. *Throws up hands.* Any way, thanks for the revert. Xymmax (talk) 15:46, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Elkman: This article needs some help. I've given it a go, but maybe you have some wisdom and art to add. Thanks. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 04:57, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Stan
- I don't think the article has any problems with completeness. It could always be expanded, but I think you have more sources than I could add. I made some (mostly mechanical) edits to the article:
- If you use a reference more than once, rather than listing it over and over in the reference section, you can just use the syntax <ref name="foo">[http://www.example.com/foo.html Example:Foo]</ref> the first time, and then use <ref name="foo"/> for subsequent times that you use the reference. Wikipedia:Footnotes#Naming a ref tag so it can be used more than once explains how to do this.
- If you use a link as a reference, it doesn't need to be in the External links section.
- I cleaned up the duplicate stub notices. (Actually, I'm not even sure if the article is a stub any more.)
- Wikipedia:Manual of style, Wikipedia:Citing sources, and Wikipedia:Citation templates are useful reading. On the other hand, these aren't tomes that you need to memorize. (I also think someone should have explained this patiently to you rather than running to WP:AN/I to complain.) If you have any further questions, I'll be glad to answer them. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 15:18, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
- To be sure, Stan tends to toward completeness (on the substance, anyway). Thanks for the advice. I'll read up in my spare time and try to implement (some) of it. Thank you also for the assistance. I had already set it up to watch your talk page. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 16:29, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Stan
El Rio Community Health Center
[edit]Hi Elkman,
I wanted to discuss the religibility of the page that you deleted due to your claim of advertising. The El Rio Community health Center information was all based on their 2006 Annual Report, which is a valid source. I was planning on developing this site even further with other news articles. Unfortunately, to get the page with the correct information would take some time. While I think i switched back and forth between first and third person too many times. I also think that it was a perfectly acceptable site that did not break the rules of wikipedia. Please reconsider, and let me know. —Preceding unsigned comment added by El Rio Foundation (talk • contribs) 15:45, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
your county tool produces different results for new york county, ny
[edit]Hi - your county infobox tool for New York County is giving a different set of results, perhaps because of the subway MPS designations. Any chance you can modify it to dump out the usual "Name/Image/Location/Town/Description" setup instead?
Thanks! dm (talk) 18:12, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- I think you might be looking for the county list generator instead. This is the version that I wrote that generates the lists similar to List of Registered Historic Places in Hennepin County, Minnesota, complete with Wiki-markup. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 19:26, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
- Cool! That is what I was looking for. Check out User:Dmadeo/nytest Now I just have to go through an ensure everything is there. :( Thanks! dm (talk) 04:22, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- Wow, that's a long list. I'd suggest breaking it down into areas of the city and into districts versus individual buildings, sort of like how List of Registered Historic Places in New York County, New York is currently organized. There's also the task of checking the names on the generated list versus the existing article titles in Wikipedia. (Unfortunately, there's probably no way of doing this with a script.) Then, by the time you take on the task of putting photos and descriptions into the list, you'll still have a lot of work ahead. It isn't impossible, of course, but it'll keep you busy for a while. :) --Elkman (Elkspeak) 13:28, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Cookies
[edit]Hello, Elkman. If I deny these cookies (just for example--I deny everything that can be dispensed with and still have a site function, usually) does that mean my profile is recorded as my IP address? 2o7, advertising, atdmt, att, bridgetrack, collarity, contextweb, doubleclick, google, hitbox, insightexpress, mcclatchyinteractive, questionmarket, realmedia, revsci, specificclick, tacoda, ugamsolutions, zwire. Sorry for the off topic question. Louise Story published this last month and got me thinking again. If you don't know the answer, any idea of where to ask might be interesting. Thank you in advance. -Susanlesch (talk) 08:57, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
- Well I tried to look this up but am coming up ignorant for lack of experience on a commercial site. RFCs 2616 and 2965 talk about IP addresses in relation to servers and hosts (not clients). I wondered if (just for example), tacoda and whatever site (tacoda's partner, or customer) I am visiting have shared access to my IP address. If they do I might as well accept all cookies. -Susanlesch (talk) 11:15, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
- Again breaking netiquette by replying to myself for lack of a reply to reply to... to finish my Q&A in a safe place. I have not found an answer yet to the cookie monster. The semi-answer above would seem to negate today's common privacy best practices for user control of cookies! But if content is king and content is free that is the price you pay for now.
- While I am writing and on another off-topic topic, for Firefox users, the NoScript add-on is the best measure out there according to TidBITS's security expert. Regular malware protection on your platform is of course necessary (in Mac OS they'll find <90% but they are still building a Mac product at Symantec and some people like Clam-AV. I use F-Prot on the Windows side). NoScript does require that scripts be enabled as needed, on-demand and per-site, and has some effect on appearance in some cases. I'll be sure to add more here as I think of it! Dear cookie monster thank you for keeping me alert. -Susanlesch (talk) 01:16, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
- I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to respond earlier -- work was really busy and stressful today. I had a number of questions from presales people who are trying to figure out how to do something.
- Anyway, I'm really not an expert about online privacy, or in how to avoid being tracked online. I figure that even if they target ads to me, I still have the choice of whether or not to buy the product. If I visited a Web site and they had an ad for new mountain bikes, an ad for a local scuba diving shop, and a couple of ads with new books from the Minnesota Historical Society, then I'd realize I'm being tracked too closely. But for the most part, I don't really worry about having my entire Web history tracked online. There are too many Web surfers out there, and too much data to be collected, that it would be really difficult to put together a personalized profile of any particular individual. Besides, as you mentioned, there are several different companies that put out cookies and try to collect profiles, and nobody is going to have anything complete. I don't think 2o7.net is going to talk to casalemedia.com to put together two pieces of information about me -- they're in competition with each other, and they have proprietary data that they'd want to keep secret. If you're looking for more places to ask questions like this, check out Wikipedia:Reference desk or Yahoo Answers.
- By the way, I'm not really a cookie monster. This is about the only kind of monster I am. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 02:21, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
- Cool. I didn't realize that was you.--74.38.90.174 (talk) 23:11, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, unless one of them buys out the other, 2o7 wouldn't share with casalemedia, but the question is does the partner, for example, 2o7 have the IP addresses in its customers' server log files--do sites and their cookie-requesting partners share IP address data. I'll try the reference desk, thank you very much. If a picture is worth a thousand words, that video would cause a buffer overflow. Congratulations on best of show! -Susanlesch (talk) 07:46, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Regarding this, don't go so hard on yourself. Some disputes are difficult. Actually, it seems I'm a magnet for difficult disputes. Have a look at this Israel-Palestine dispute. That's the most complex one I've mediated, and it's still deadlocked. Anyway, you've done a good job. For the record, I've been on Wikipedia 2 1/2 months. I've just learned a lot in a short space of time. Thanks again for all you've done. Steve Crossin (talk) (review) 03:49, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

- Hello again, Elkman. I know you have kept tabs on the medcab case, so the latest contributions by Coccyx_Bloccyx, 3 more deletions today alone(??!!) have likely not escaped your attention, nor, do I believe has it escaped your attention that the same question asked by myself, you and Steve has yet to be answered, which is: What is wrong? Give us the specific. I have posted an event notification a while back about the constant deletions from this individual and the exact same behaviour patterns that you pointed out in the AFD case. There are so many of those notifications, that I can't find the specific one anymore and I have absolutely no idea if anyone did anything with it whatsoever, or if it's just lost in useless cyberspace somewhere, never to see the light of day again. Having seen just today's contributions and the same sort of opposition against him once again, I have come to the conclusion that there is definitely a pattern here and it ain't good, so far as I can tell. I don't know what else to do about the matter, so I leave in your capable hands the suggestion that an admin should consider action to stop the decimation of articles. Even the deletionist society has rules and regs that make sense, whereby there has to be some rhyme or reason behind the deletions and tagging etc. I believe the man is relentless in his pursuit of destruction. The trail of his destruction is clearly there for all to see and the proof is in the pudding. He's still deleting, but can't answer specifics. That's because there aren't any, I believe, otherwise the medcab case would not have been necessary. I suggest that admin action be considered to stop this destructive behaviour. I don't know what else to do, so I leave it with you. Best, --Achim (talk) 03:06, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Actually, Coccyx Bloccyx (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log)'s actions pretty much have escaped me today. I spent a good chunk of the morning working on lists of bridges on the National Register of Historic Places, and I worked on the backlog at CAT:CSD and WP:AIV this afternoon. And, I spent a good part of the evening working on an off-Wikipedia project for the next CONvergence (convention). I even watched a YouTube video of a malfunctioning train horn. I wasn't even watching User talk:Coccyx Bloccyx because the talk page edits there don't have any bearing on the mediation case. Anything that needs to be discussed in the mediation should be posted at the mediation page -- not on my talk page. As I mentioned, I'm not in charge of the mediation -- I gave that duty over to Steve Crossin (talk · contribs). As you found out, I'm not a good mediator. You might even be suspecting at this point that I'm not a very good administrator, since I haven't given you the answer you've wanted to hear. (If you want to take up that last point, I suggest taking questions about my behavior to WP:AN/I, WP:AN, or any of the many off-Wikipedia attack sites.)
- If you have specific problematic edits that Coccyx Bloccyx has done today, please point out the diffs to me. I don't want to have to look through all of his contributions to determine which of them are the "3 more deletions today alone(??!!)" I need to pay attention to. Are you talking about his edits to anything within Wikipedia:Articles for deletion? Or are you talking about this edit where he removed a discussion from his talk page and asked you to continue it on the mediation page? (That's actually a very good idea, and one I'd like you to follow. If you're posting to my talk page, Steve Crossin (talk · contribs) and Coccyx Bloccyx (talk · contribs) probably won't see it and won't be able to contribute to it.)
- As far as I understand it, the subject of the mediation is specifically about Joint (building) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views). The request, "What would you like to change about that?", specifically refers to what needs to be done in regard to that article. I'll note that Coccyx Bloccyx (talk · contribs) hasn't touched Joint (building) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) ever since the mediation has been filed. Coccyx Bloccyx has been tagging other articles and nominating them for deletion. If you disagree with those edits, you need to list them in the mediation.
- I almost get the feeling you're trying to do an end run around the mediation by posting here. Maybe you're expecting me to do something administratively that would give you a quicker sense of "justice" than you'll get out of the Mediation Cabal case. Personally, Coccyx Bloccyx's edits haven't come onto my radar today (or yesterday, or even the day before) because they haven't caused disruption to me or to the project. I'm not in the habit of regularly "checking up" on certain users' edits and going through them to determine if they're vandalism. You, on the other hand, are continuing to pop up on my radar, and I'm starting to get frustrated.
- I'm going to ask in plain language: If you have comments in regard to the mediation, please bring them up on the mediation page, not on my talk page. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 04:19, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- You're getting me all wrong. I have no problem doing the mediation on the mediation page. I am addressing another issue, which is a pattern that I have noticed. I asked specifically for your help because the noticeboard for admins is so big I can't even find what I did or whether or not anyone has paid attention to it. I deduced you paid attention to the matter because you have commented on the mediation page, even though you have turned it over. If I had a problem with your behaviour, I would address it directly to you. Very clearly, while I don't struggle solving the medcab case on that page, I was looking for help with the generic issue, as I believe there is one and the extent of it did not occur to me until it was pointed out by others on the AFD page, which included your edits and comments. I get that you don't want anything to do with it and so be it. As far as "justice", in this realm, experience has taught me that this can be difficult to come by. What is very easy to come by is a load of anonymous editors who go about backing each other up in deletions. I see them referred to as Wikinazis and I can't say that I disagree. I don't count you among them by the way. So, if I ticked you off, please bear in mind the limited scope of communications here. Face to face or on the phone, there wouldn't be nearly the disagreements on here I think. Enough said. I will not ask you for anything else and please forget that I did. --Achim (talk) 03:22, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

- Nice! I can certainly do any cleanup with AWB; what you did on New Jersey was perfect. (I note that the GeoHack UTM values are slightly different; is this because of the NAD27/NAD83 difference?) --NE2 16:31, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

NRHP database
[edit]I seen you put in a NRHP info box on a new article I recently wrote of Southern Railway's Spencer Shops. Great improvement that I would like to use on future articles. I am researching for a new article on the Ramsdell Theatre in Manistee, Michigan. On the building there is a Historical Marker that says Thomas Jefferson Ramsdell—pioneer lawyer, state legislator and civic leader—built this theatre between 1902 and 1903. At the end of the Marker it says The Ramsdell Theatre was listed on the National Register of Historic places in 1972. Erected 1980. Marker Number L0124. However I can not find it on the NRHP database to use as a reference. Do you have an answer for this. Perhaps all places are not listed. The Chicago architect and builder was Solon Spencer Beman. If you have an idea, you can put it here as I will temporarly watch your Talk Page. --Doug talk 11:39, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- Just jumping in here. I can find it there. The NRHP refnum is 72000640. Try this link, enter "MI" for the state code, and "Ramsdell" in the name section. It's true, though, that sometimes the database can be squirrelly. Hope this helps. :) --Ebyabe (talk) 16:10, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, found it! Now I can continue with writting up my new article on the Ramsdell Theatre. I plan on taking a picture of it sometime this week so I can add to the article. James Earl Jones started his career there, so will be using this as a hook for DYK. --Doug talk 16:37, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, Ebyabe. I haven't had a chance to answer since last night since I was busy today, enjoying one of the few warm and sunny days we've had in Minnesota this spring.
- In addition to the link that Ebyabe gave, I thought I'd mention that I downloaded the National Register database onto my machine and wrote some PHP queries that create {{Infobox nrhp}} infoboxes. I also have queries on there that will tell you what buildings were designed by a certain architect (although you need to use a wildcard, like "Beman%Solon"). You can find the query tools at http://www2.elkman.net/nrhp/. I think you'll find them useful. Also, if you're interested, check out Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places where you can find out more about the project. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 01:55, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Great information - I have saved it for future articles. BTW, just put the new article Ramsdell Theatre up and submitted for DYK. --Doug talk 12:33, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Question
[edit]Why did you block User talk:24.155.28.90 after they only had two minorly unconstructive edits, and only recieved one warning? SpencerT♦C 00:42, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
- Because there's been a general pattern of abuse at Rubeus Hagrid (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views), brought forth by someone named Grawp (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) and numerous sockpuppets. The edits also looked like the pattern of Willy on Wheels (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) (although I think that editor finally calmed down). I think last Friday evening, the 2nd, Wikipedia and WP:ANI were getting a lot of vandalism from anonymous vandals renaming or blanking pages to something like "HAGGER???", so I decided to take quicker action than doing the old "four warnings and a block" routine. I didn't know for sure if 24.155.28.90 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) was part of a coordinated group of vandals or perhaps an open proxy, but I suspected they weren't going to make positive contributions at that point. I see that the IP made a similar edit tonight. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 01:53, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Baltimore City Hall
[edit]First, thanks for the help. Second, I looked for Baltimore City Hall in historic places of Maryland and couldn't find it. How did you know? Third, less than 10 minutes after I posted the first part of the article, you made your edit. How did you know? Marylandstater (talk) 22:50, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
- I was reading Special:Newpages, so that's how I found Baltimore City Hall. It's listed at List of Registered Historic Places in Maryland, under Baltimore (Independent City). Actually, since Baltimore is an independent city, I just realized it wasn't properly showing up at http://www2.elkman.net/nrhp/querybycity.php (the query I use to get NRHP references by city), so I have to check into that. I'm trying to get out of the office now, so I don't have much time to reply, but I'll answer more questions later. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 22:55, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Elkman NRHP generator feedback
[edit]Hi Elkman -- Just a note to let you know I added some more feedback about the NRHP generator, relating to treatment of Washington DC sites, at "comments on the Elkman infobox generator" within WT:NRHP. Not sure where you would prefer to receive feedback, let me know if you prefer a different means. An advantage of providing feedback through the main NRHP talk page is that it provides a model for others to provide feedback about any other matters, too. Thanks, as always, for your awesome support of WP:NRHP by developing and maintaining the generator. doncram (talk) 16:45, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
- You noticed on 15 April 2008 that the NRIS system had been updated, in notice just archived to archive number 10 of WT:NRHP. I commented then about having tested it for the recent (Dec 06 2007) listing of Roanoke Building in Chicago, saying it turns up fine. However, I was just asked again about that NRHP information, so check again. Now, I notice that the infobox generated includes the previous footnote, saying that the NRIS source is as of January 23, 2007. That won't do for sites added after that date. :) Probably the generator should be updated so the footnote says 15 April 2008 instead? Thanks as always for your developing and maintaining this great tool. doncram (talk) 07:32, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
- I just noticed the old date last night when I added an infobox. I've updated the infobox generator so it now lists April 15, 2008 as the NRIS source. Thanks for catching that and reminding me. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 16:36, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Page move protections
[edit]It's preemptive. I started with countries and major cities that are Featured Articles, and am now moving on to all countries. Whether it's Grawp or someone else, there's no legitimate reason to move an article like that without a discussion and consensus. I'm considering making a proposal to apply this to all Wikipedia 1.0 articles. If Grawp then wants to waste his time moving articles that aren't prominent, so be it. [edit]Deleting talk pages for Evrik
[edit]I don't know if you can revert this or not, but Evrik has been reported to the Admin noticeboard for (among other things) off-wiki canvassing. [1] That was documented on his talk page (now deleted), by a message from somebody he had canvassed off-wiki. Also documented there, and also now gone, was the record of multiple Wikipedia editors asking for explanations of his behavior in changing multiple links from the existign article schadenfreude so that they would point to a stub article he was creating for an archaic word for the same thing, epicaricacy. Anyway, if you can get these pages back I think they are relevant both to the charges against Evrik and also perhaps to his defense that the AfD of epicaricacy was in bad faith. betsythedevine (talk) 18:35, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Automated NRHP template info grabber
[edit]You are have the NRHP template info grabbing template creator. I am wondering if it is possible that you might be able to get it to use the latitude and longitude to create a map with the location of the buildings from http://tiger.census.gov/cgi-bin/mapbrowse-tbl/ I just created my first maps from the service this morning (yesterday by UTC time). One is at Historic Michigan Boulevard District. A better example is Image:Rush Street via tiger.census.gov.gif, which is at a scale to show street detail. The maps just need latitute and longitude and then scaling parameter. I think all buildings should have maps and I am going to talk to people at WP:SKY. WP:NRHP and WP:WPARCH should probably get involved if this can be automated. We would need to goose some infobox templates to make room for maps.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 04:50, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
- I'm a little bit confused. Are you saying you want me to take the buildings that appear on the map at this link? It gives me a default map of Washington, D.C., but I don't even see a layer of buildings that I can select on there (e.g. the Washington Monument, United States Capitol, the White House, etc.) Or, are you looking for an infobox that takes a map graphic that you generated with this tool, and then plots building(s) onto the graphic? I sort of think you're asking for the latter. If you could clarify what you're asking for, I'll see if it's possible to do it. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 22:38, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

- Yikes i think Elkman was having a bad day! Tony was not suggesting that you program in the NRHP or NRHP2 infobox templates, but rather that you revise the Elkman NRHP infobox generator to call NRHP2 instead of NRHP, and to conform the output to fit the somewhat different syntax in NRHP2. I am not sure NRHP2 is fully stable yet though. I am still holding out hope that User:Dudemanfellabra and I can find some programming help so that NRHP2 syntax can be made to conform with original NRHP infobox syntax, and then fold NRHP2's extra features into NRHP. There are a couple hundred articles now with NRHP2 infoboxes, while 10,000 or so with NRHP infobox. All just FYI. doncram (talk) 21:58, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for chiming in at List of octagon houses that there are 113 "octagon mode" houses in NRIS. As i had already noted at Talk:List of octagon houses, i can't figure out how to locate those, by any search at the National Register. As you see, we have about 50 of them, mostly those with "Octagon House" or "Octagonal House" in their name.
It would be really great if you could explain how to get these from NRIS directly, or if you could generate a table, or otherwise list, the 113!
We are under a deadline, trying to meet a DYK 5 day deadline, and about 4 days have gone by already! doncram (talk) 22:45, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- I have a query that will do a listing by architectural style. Go to this page and select "Octagon Mode" for the architectural style. I did a query for the number of structures in "Octagon Mode." (Actually, I have to adjust that number because two of them were removed from the National Register, and several of the listings are actually historic districts.) The query should provide the information you need -- if not, I can see about writing something specialized. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 23:03, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- I also realized that even after filtering out for "barn", there were a few churches and the like showing up in there. I narrowed down my query a little more, checking only for those with a historic function of "01" (dwelling), so there are definitely 72 octagonal houses in the list. I'm doing this in an Access database; you'll still see a number of non-house structures in the link I gave you. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 23:18, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, the query is great. Yes, i saw that some were churches and barns and schoolhouses and the like. now being familiar with most of them, i could select the probable houses and have listed them in List of octagon houses now. Thanks! doncram (talk) 23:38, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Yay! the DYK finally went through, and the DYK hook, with no picture though, is on the Wikipedia main page right now. Tho it is the middle of the night in the U.S. The DYK administrator saw fit to directly award the DYK plaque to Lvklock, not to Clariosophic or to me, oh well. But, indirectly then, passing the award on...
The hook that appears now is, Did You Know: *... that zooming in from satellite view, one can see the outlines of Wilcox Octagon House and most of the 82 octagon houses listed on the U.S. National Register?
- Thanks Elkman for your timely help, crucial to getting a good list that we are all proud of. It was fun getting the list out, at least (meaning it was less fun about negotiating for the DYK)! doncram (talk) 08:19, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

North Minneapolis Wiki
[edit]Hi, I'm trying to contact wiki editors who'd like to help with a Wiki project for North Minneapolis. It is only in it's beginning stages and could use the help of veteran wiki editors to get it going.
The reason for the project is to help connect people to the pleathora of resources and history that exist in North Minneapolis. The potential for this site to be used by non-profits, librarians, teachers and others to help connect neighbors to community resources could be huge. It would also be a way to document the positive stories and efforts in North Minneapolis,
I've chosen to build the site at [2] primarily because wikispaces has the only easy to use visual editor for a wiki site that I could find.
If you have any thoughts or input on the project feel free to contact me. [3] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.220.4.65 (talk) 05:27, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

There's a table in the database that indicates whether a structure is part of a National Historic Landmark survey, so I'm doing a query against that. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 19:32, 18 May 2008 (UTC)"
I had certainly noticed that your generator did start including nhl or nhld. It's been a help. Not sure if you know the NRIS field is apparently inaccurate fairly often, and/or it requires a lot of interpretation. The NHL list-tables were created from NRIS using that field, and about 5% or so are off. It misses some NHLs, particularly newer ones (data entry practices changed apparently). It includes some NRHPs that are not NHLs, often an NRHP in a NHLD or an HD that includes an NHL. The remaining ones in your database that have NHL or NHLD, but don't have an article with infobox, will largely be of these types.
Where i come across those, i have made a point to create a stub article, override the NHL or NHLD in the infobox, and mention in the article the specific NHLD or NHL that is related.
So, I wonder if your generator should be modified to not include NHL or NHLD, but rather to include a note in the text body, like where "Filler text here" appears, suggesting that the site may be an NHL or NHLD, or it may be included in an NHLD, or it may be an HD that includes an NHL.
It's not a big deal, as there are relatively few occurences remaining of all this.
Hey, just now i wonder, is there any way to cross-check the wikipedia articles vs. the NRIS-indicated NHLs or NHLDs? If you could generate a table of them all, like you did for Octagon mode houses or other special reports, I would be very happy to have that. I would go through and ensure there are articles (or appropriate redirects to articles), and to create stub articles with appropriate links for all those tricky non-NHL ones. It would be a great help.

A couple NRHP / Infobox generator questions
[edit]Hi. You might not be the right person to ask about this, but since I've been using your infobox generator, I thought I'd start with you.
1. The Straightforward Question: NRHP reference number 80001922 is "Fisher and New Center Buildings" in Detroit. These are two distinct buildings. The Fisher Building is a National Landmark, and is included in this list: List of National Historic Landmarks in Michigan. The New Center Building is (I think) NOT a National Landmark, but I'm kind of confused as to how the two buildings share a listing, yet one is a Landmark and the other not. Am I interpreting this right?
2. The Weird Question: NRHP reference number 00000115 is the Chestnut Street--Grand Trunk Railroad bridge. NRHP reference number 00000114 is the Antietam Street--Grand Trunk Railroad bridge. For the former, the infobox generator lists "Grand Trunk Railroad" as the architect. For the latter, it lists "Grand Funk Railroad." That's kind of amusing, but what the heck? Is it really that way in the original government database?
Insight appreciated. Andrew Jameson (talk) 16:47, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
- My guess is that the Fisher and New Center Buildings were originally nominated to the National Register together, either because they were part of the same development or because they were built by the same architect, or both. The National Historic Landmark designation was given later, in 1989, and applied only to the Fisher Building. I'm looking around to try and figure out which other building is listed as the New Center Building. The address I see here is 7430 2nd Avenue, for the New Center Building. I'm really just guessing at the processes, though, so I don't have a definitive example.
- As far as "Grand Funk Railroad" goes, it's actually listed that way in the National Register database. It doesn't make sense that a classic rock band would have designed a railroad bridge -- I think they'd be more interested in writing verse, chorus, bridge instead. I bet someone updating the database was listening to a classic rock station that day, or they thought they could slip something in without being caught. I'm easily entertained by that database error, so thanks for finding it. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 21:02, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
- OK, that makes sense. The "New Center Building" was originally called just that, but is now called the "Albert Kahn Building" (see here, for example) It's located catty-corner to the Fisher Building, and the two had both the same architect (Albert Kahn, natch) and the same original owners (the Fisher brothers), so it makes sense that the two buildings would share a listing. I just got confused as to when the Fisher Building achieved landmark status.
- And the Grand Funk thing just struck me as weird.

not a sockpuppert
[edit]You think im a sockpupet - im not. Use the checker if you must. im just an ordinary wikipedian who likes to keep a lid on admins who stop doing administratio and start being policeman judge jury & executioner. ask youself if you did anygood with that issue. are you trying to write an encyclopedia or just trying to antagnosise other people. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Quokly (talk • contribs) 05:42, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
- I'm trying to write an encyclopedia. Part of being an encyclopedia means writing articles that are accurate and factually correct, which is what Ogranut (talk · contribs) was ruining by adding unsourced edits saying that MNDOT was not maintaining the I-35W Mississippi River Bridge. (Here's a hint: Who had concrete trucks and workers on the bridge at the time it collapsed? It was MNDOT.)
