Smithsonian Institution Archives Edit-a-Thon and Meetup!

Who should come? You should. Really.
She Blinded Me with Science: Smithsonian Women in Science Edit-a-Thon will be held on Friday, March 30, 2012 at the Smithsonian Archives in Washington, D.C. This edit-a-thon will focus on improving and writing Wikipedia content about women from the Smithsonian who contributed to the sciences. It will be followed by a happy hour meetup! Clara Hasse

Hi Effie! I stumbled across a source about Clara H. Hasse that also mentions that she worked on citrus canker. It's a brief mention, but, it's something. I found it via Jstor. I also assume the article you were talking about earlier today was one from the USDA? Looks promising! Faye Tso images

hi, thanks for helping out at editathon, good writing, however these photos may still be under copyright. (see Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright). i would recommend uploading these to english wikipedia with a fair use rationale. the artworks would require an article about each one to host the image. Museum hacks and museum edits

Hello there!

Upcoming events:

  • February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
  • February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
  • February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

Women in Science Edit-a-Thon, Part III

Hi, DigitalEffie. Thanks for organizing this edit-a-thon. I started a draft about Muriel E. Mussells Seyfert last March, one of the women in your to-do list. I'll likely work on her article or one about her sister Sylvia during your event.

When you publicize the event, I hope you'll emphasize that anyone can participate. It takes only minutes to become a Wikipedian and to contribute to the encyclopedia. If someone doesn't already have an account, they can create one at the event. If those signing up for new accounts exceed the IP limit (six per day), I can override that and override the antispoof for similar names (if the similar account is inactive). I'm a host at the Teahouse and I'm a Co-Op mentor. I enjoy helping a new editor through creating a first artiCle like here all the way through the WP:DYK. I prod newcomers to do most of the work, offering suggestions and doing bits of cleanup.

Writing Wikipedia articles about women scientists is a challenge. The Guardian article only tells part of the story. Do you know who discovered the first dwarf galaxy? The Wikipedia article credits Harlow Shapley, the man who published the data in a scholarly journal. Few know or care that the discovery was actually made by an assistant astronomer, Sylvia Mussells Lindsay (Murial's sister) as related here (in the 7th paragraph). Finding reliable sources that state that Shapley discovered the first dwarf galaxy is easy; there are hundreds of them. Documenting that a young female assistant did so is a lot harder but Shapley acknowledges Sylvia's accomplishment even if only in a footnote. The Mussells sisters made significant contributions to astronomy that aren't acknowledged in Wikipedia and are rarely and barely mentioned elsewhere.

From the late 19th century through the first three quarters of the 20th century, astronomy was definitely male-dominated. Telescopes have to remain exposed to the ambient air temperature to prevent thermal air currents from disturbing the images, both from distorting the shape of lenses and mirrors and the air movement itself. Male astronomers considered women too fragile to work in the cold conditions on mountain tops where telescopes were placed. Although completed in the 1940s, the first legal use of the 200" Hale telescope on the Palomar Observatory by a woman didn't occur until the 1960's. Even then, men resided in relative luxury while women resided in a separate unheated cottage. Although well documented, that type of information doesn't generally appear in Wikipedia articles because it's not specifically stated in reliable sources and original research and synthesis are prohibited.

There's a great masters or doctoral thesis awaiting a women's studies student interested in such things. I'll gladly use it as a reference if it's openly published. Doctoral work is often a fantastic reliable source. Check out my draft about Cordelia Stanwood, an ornithologist lacking a Wikipedia article.

And I appreciate the extra hands you will offer! I had heard of the compute-her story and will dig more into what you wrote. I think you will enjoy the talk from Marcel LaFollette during the edit-a-thon. Signed up and doing log transcription for months. When I looked for info about it, I found none so I wrote Digital Access to a Sky Century @ Harvard (DASCH). Its WP:DYK was on 11 Dec 2014, garnering a couple thousand views while on the main page. Perhaps a couple of folks found the SI transcription center via the external links.
