I looked at the page and the translations provided are very fansub-esque. Even there are idiomatically equivalent phrases in the english language, someone has decided to go with a literal translation instead. For example: "メインスクリーンにビジョンが来ます" has been translated as "We are getting video on the main screen" instead of the much more well known "We have visual". M miyama (talk) 14:49, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Page Triage newsletter

Mainspace does not have subpages so Fractal dimension/Accesible version is a mainspace article. It doesn't look needed. TheHappiestCritic only has trivial contributions so it can be deleted on request from the creator. Is it OK if I delete it? If not then consider moving it to userspace. help triage some feedback

Hey guys.

I appreciate this isn't quite what you signed up for, but I figured as people who are already pretty good at evaluating whether material is useful or not useful through Special:NewPages, you might be interested :). Over the last few months we've been developing the new Article Feedback Tool, which features a free text box. it is imperative that we work out in advance what proportion of feedback is useful or not so we can adjust the design accordingly and not overwhelm you with nonsense.

This is being done through the Feedback Evaluation System (FES), a tool that lets editors run through a stream of comments, selecting their value and viability, so we know what type of design should be promoted or avoided. We're about to start a new round of evaluations, beginning with an office hours session tomorrow at 18:00 UTC. If you'd like to help preemptively kill poor feedback, come along to #wikimedia-office and we'll show you how to use the tool. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Taboo VI: The Homecoming

As you know, the ARS is under rather intense scrutiny right now. As I find comments that seem representative of the problems identified with the project in the normal course of reviewing AFDs, I am speaking to those users directly rather than bringing it up for a public beating at the RFC or the ARS talk page. So here's what I am finding problematic about your rescue efforts in this case:

• You found some sources that mention the name of one of the band at least once
• You linked to those at the AFD and asked if others could go through them and find out if they were useful, yet you voted "keep" apparently without reading or objectively evaluating what your search had uncovered
• You didn't actually improve the nominated articles at all
• You don't seem to have noticed the bundled nomination, the discussion is actually about six articles on different releases, not just the one in the title or the band itself.

All of these factors put together suggest you were doing exactly what many people perceive as the only thing ARS members do: search a term, link the results to your keep vote, move on. That is not article rescue and it is the sort of behavior that has given the ARS the poor reputation it now has. This message isn't intended to discourage you but rather to point out that participating at AFD is actually the least important part of rescue work. Beeblebrox (talk) 00:49, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

AYBABTU

You left a note on my talk page asking me to review and give an opinion about the translations used in the AYBABTU article. I read the article as well as the talk page, and my honest opinion is that, since the article is about an Internet meme--not about translation per se--the table showing the original Japanese together with the game translation and other English translations is superfluous and should be removed.

In my opinion, the Internet meme should be explained without reference to translation. I think it would be suitable to include an explanation of what the intended meaning was, but the expression became an Internet meme not because it was poorly translated but because it sounded humorous to native English speakers, who were entirely ignorant of what the original Japanese was, and therefore translation quality is basically irrelevant.

Thanks for your comment. I still think that the proper translations are encyclopedic content and relevant to the topic, even if the original meaning itself is not part of the meme. As you say, the humorous effect of the poor translation is the source of humour; for non-native English speakers as myself, being able to compare the broken engrish with a proper translation greatly improves the understanding of the original effect, and thus helps to gain a better knowledge of the topic. Since you are an English native speaker is normal that you don't appreciate this purpose, since you don't need it. Would you nevertheless want to comment on the accuracy of the translations in the "more accurate" column of the table? Diego (talk) 12:29, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

I understand your desire to have an idiomatic translation, which is why I suggested that an explanation of the intended meaning be included in the body of the article. The "more accurate" column is a misnomer; it would be better to label it "more idiomatic." Translation accuracy is not something that can be defined or quantified, and I believe it would be misleading to imply that there is a single "correct" translation of a given sentence. That being said, I would change the translations in that column as follows:

"An unknown assailant has planted a bomb!" should change to "Somebody has planted a bomb."

"A video is being routed to the main screen." should change to "A video image will appear on the main screen."

"With the help of Federation Forces, all your bases have been taken over by us." should change to "With the help of the Federation Forces, we have captured all your bases."

"Treasure what little time remains of your lives." is fine as is.

"Let's hope for our future..." should change to "There is hope for the future."

These changes are not really significant, but they do reflect the original Japanese somewhat more closely in idiomatic English. Hope you find these suggestions useful.

A big NPT update

Hey! Big update on what the developers have been working on, and what is coming up:

coding

• Fixes for the "moved pages do not show up in Special:NewPages" and "pages created from redirects do not show up in Special:NewPages" bugs have been completed and signed off on. Unfortunately we won't be able to integrate them into the existing version, but they will be worked into the Page Triage interface.
• Coding has been completed on three elements; the API for displaying metadata about the article in the "list view", the ability to keep the "patrol" button visible if you edit an article before patrolling it, and the automatic removal of deleted pages from the queue. All three are awaiting testing but otherwise complete.

All other elements are either undergoing research, or about to have development started. I appreciate this sounds like we've not got through much work, and truthfully we're a bit disappointed with it as well; we thought we'd be going at a faster pace :(. Unfortunately there seems to be some 24-72 hour bug sweeping the San Francisco office at the moment, and at one time or another we've had several devs out of it. It's kind of messed with workflow.

Stuff to look at

We've got a pair of new mockups to comment on that deal with the filtering mechanism; this is a slightly updated mockup of the list view, and this is what the filtering tab is going to look like. All thoughts, comments and suggestions welcome on the NPT talkpage :). I'd also like to thank the people who came to our last two office hours sessions; the logs will be shortly available here.

I've also just heard that the first functional prototype for enwiki will be deployed mid-April! Really, really stoked to see this happening :). We're finding out if we can stick something up a bit sooner on prototype.wiki or something.

I appreciate there may be questions or suggestions where I've said "I'll find out and get back to you" and then, uh. not ;p. I sincerely apologise for that: things have been a bit hectic at this end over the last few weeks. But if you've got anything I've missed, drop me a line and I'll deal with it! Straight pride and Theodore G. Maravelias

I accidentally reverted your edit as "vandalism" for which I apologize. Nonetheless, Maravelias organized what was explicitly named a Straight Pride rally; such an activity cannot be disregarded and is certainly relevent. TreacherousWays (talk) 18:34, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Maybe it's the way the sentence is worded what raised my red flags: "notably, student Theodore G. Maravelias [...] went on to a career of opposing rights for gays including gay marriage". I can't see anything in the sources that merit having this one man singled out. First, I can't verify from the sources that Maravelias organized the parade, only that he spoke at it. Second, the "career of opposing rights for gays" would be relevant if the man had organized other straight pride incidents, but the NPR article describes him against gay marriage, not gay pride itself; this could make him relevant with respect to the general topic of opposition to gay rights, but not specifically about straight pride. I don't see any reason to talk about this person in this article above all the other participants in the various events. New Pages update

Hey Diego Moya/Archive 5 :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As the enwiki page notes, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.

On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our Engagement Strategy on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).

On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup here. A stripped-down version of this should be ready to deploy fairly soon after the list view is; I'm afraid I don't have precise dates yet. When I have more info, or can unleash everyone to test the list view, I'll let you know :). As always, any questions to the talkpage for the project or mine. Thanks! Article Feedback Tool, Version 5

Just a quick update on what we've been working on:

Sabotage of Technological unemployment and other articles

Thank you for your comment in Talk:Technological unemployment.

I posted sound, verifiable arguments in this article, only to have them reverted or otherwise removed by certain editors who disagreed. But more importantly, they are systematically trying to discredit sources counter to their POV. There is a body of work by people who now or in the past have worked for IIASA and INSEAD that addresses technological unemployment and the productivity slowdown, with excellent thinking regarding this issue. Part of this work is the Ayres-Warr model about which I wrote Useful work growth theory. One of the editors who didn't like the ideas presented nominated the article for deletion, and a second editor of Technological unemployment, who you addressed today, voted to delete it. It was called "fringe theory" and said to lack notability, despite the fact that it was published by the International Energy Agency in their World Energy Outlook(2004) and more recently cited by the International Monetary Fund. I also saw that it was in a NATO publication. Of course it is difficult to get significant coverage of a topic like this, because it merges ideas from science with economics, so economists have little understanding. However, Ayres-Warr is only a refinement of widely a widely known economic model.

This model is also discussed among the energy community and has been posted on energy blogs. It's also know to energy traders.

I believe that Wikipedia's notability policy is intended to keep people form posting about space aliens, conspiracy theories and other such nonsense, but to delete articles about the work of serious scientist who have important insights into critical problems is another matter.Phmoreno (talk) 22:19, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi.

I think I understand what you're trying to convey, however, I think you're misunderstanding what is being said in the text.

The point of the sentence is that DRV (and MRV) is not the place to re-argue a closed discussion. That said, previous comments in the discussion can be (and usually, should be) assessed. (Which, I believe is the point you're trying to make.)

But I'd like to avoid re-treading WP:CON on this page, as picking out just a few points may lead to them gaining more semantic "weight" than may be intended.

Or maybe I understood what was being said, but I don't agree with it -or at least with how it was worded- and thus I deleted it. Move review is not DRV; the rules for moving are in many ways unclear and contended, and following the current closing procedure is no guarantee that the admin will perform a valid close; so for this new process it's likely that several of the arguments in the move dicussion should be re-evaluated during the review. Someone even proposed in the talk page that this review process should be the basis to reform the move, title and disambiguation procedures in places where they're contended; for that you need to evaluate the strength of arguments provided in the discussion. AFT5 newsletter

Hey again all :). So, some big news, some small news, some good news, some bad news!

On the "big news" front; we've now deployed AFT5 on to 10 percent of articles, This is pretty awesome :). On the "bad news", however, it looks like we're having to stop at 10 percent until around September - there are scaling issues that make it dangerous to deploy wider. Happily, our awesome features engineering team is looking into them as we speak, and I'm optimistic that the issues will be resolved.

For both "small" and "good" news; we've got another office hours session. This one is tomorrow, at 22:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office ^connect - I appreciate it's a bit late for Europeans, but I wanted to juggle it so US east coasters could attend if they wanted :). Hope to see you all there!

Arbitration Request on Kashmir Conflict

The premise of the add is as a highighted case in human rights abuse where the accused was issued a passport by the country in spite of a court order in that country and then the extradition was not pursued again government defying a high court order. This is to highlight government involvement and not just an individual case.

Page Triage newsletter

Hey all. Some quick but important updates on what we've been up to and what's coming up next :).

The curation toolbar, our Wikimedia-supported twinkle replacement. We're going to be deploying it, along with a pile of bugfixes, to wikipedia on 9 August. After a few days to check it doesn't make anything explode or die, we'll be sticking up a big notice and sending out an additional newsletter inviting people to test it out and give us feedback :). This will be followed by two office hours sessions - one on Tuesday the 14th of August at 19:00 UTC for all us Europeans, and one on Wednesday the 15th at 23:00 UTC for the East Coasters out there :). As always, these will be held in #wikimedia-office; drop me a note if you want to know how to easily get on IRC, or if you aren't able to attend but would like the logs.

Re: my recent vandalism

I noticed this edit just this morning and I wanted to explain that my earlier reversion of this text was intended to curb the forum-like activities of an anonymous IP editor who has been attacking feminism as misandry on a number of articles across Wikipedia. This character has been blocked many times and has admitted that he is editing by IP in order to evade a block imposed on his main account. Per the banning policy, I think I was in the right when I reverted this socked addition, and I think the new subsection is really of only the most marginal relevance to the article. The article has little to do with "what feminists think of video games and the male gender". Anyway I'll let the post stand for now, but I just wanted to clear up my motivation here. This isn't a content dispute between me and the IP editor. It's a behavioral dispute between Wikipedia and this editor. And I don't think it's fair to characterize my edit as vandalism although I can see how it might look like vandalism to someone unfamiliar with this IP editor's history. Sorry to have been so long-winded. -Thibbs (talk) 04:31, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

• If I may interject here: it should have been inherently obvious why Thibbs removed the anon's content as vandalism: it was self-evident vandalism. And simply by clicking on the anon's contributions, you could have "traced and evaluated" that the anon has been blocked on multiple IPs for doing this. Now repeat after me: "Opinions I don't like is not the same as vandalism". There wasn't, and still there isn't any evidence that IP 58.7.55.27 has been involved in vandalism; all I could see then was a somewhat rude comment (but again rudeness != vandalism) that called for discussion directly about edits to the article about the page topic (so no, WP:NOTAFORUM doesn't apply); and a very short history of edits that seemed reasonable. I'm worried that you could deem as "self-evident vandalism" something with those characteristics; what other strong opinions are you reverting as vandalism?

After two editors' intervention, I still cannot find the cause why this is seen as vandalism, other than the unexplained block in the history page, that still doesn't link to any reasons for the block. And I evaluated 58.7.55.27's contributions with the history tooltip, that doesn't show administrator blocks; that's why you're expected to provide the appropriate context and a link to evidence in the edit summary, so that other editors don't have to guess where in Wikipedia space to look for related edits. I'm not denying that it can be vandalism; I'm just commenting on how that assertion was made. Flagging it as a minor change is certainly inappropriate even it there was context, more so when there is none. If you have solid reasons to censor other people's opinions, you must state them so that other editors like me can review the validity of your own behavior; unsubstantiated accusations of vandalism can be disruptive themselves.

TL;DR: I think the whole point is that you must be much more careful when reverting vandalism - there's no such thing as "trivial" or "minor" removal, except for the most blatant instances in article space (thus, decontextualiced calls to discussion in talk space does not qualify as blatant and should be handed with care). Incivility, using the talk page as a forum for incivility and polemic (trolling in short, which he WAS doing, as any editor who took more than a cursory look at the situation would tell you), after having being blocked multiple times for doing so (pretty sure he was presently evading a block from another IP) is self-evident vandalism. Reverting a blocked user's polemic and incivility (= trolling = vandalism) may reasonably deemed a minor edit. Again, you rashly and inappropriately used Twinkle and labelled Thibbs' edit as vandalism. bridies (talk) 09:49, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

None of that addresses my point, which is that YOU and Thibbs should provide evidence that IP 58.7.55.27 had been blocked because of previous misbehavior under previous accounts. Given that you STILL haven't provided the requested link between the current and the previously claimed disruptive behavior, there is NO available evidence at all that this edit was vandalism, that these ones are not vandalism themselves, and your claims that the original IP post was trolling CANNOT be self-evident. Completely spurious, there's no need to spoon feed you: Twinkle users are supposed to have some competence with it. The material removed was inherently uncivil and made reference to his previous trolling. His contributions are full of the same stuff. The talk page history in question shows him (under a different but similar IP, which is bad enough in itself) being reverted as a "troll" for the same thing. It was blatant trolling and as I say vandalism. And if you really think vandalism must consist of "FUCK LOL" and nothing else I struggle to see why you labelled Thibbs's edit as such. I'm not saying you did anything heinously bad, but the error was your's. bridies (talk) 11:01, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

I'll ask you in a way that you finally get it: What is the IP under which the user at 58.7.55.27 performed the previous disruptive activity? There's no way Twinkle nor the page history provides that information, so it's your responsibility to provide it if you assert that both are used by the same user (I'm still waiting).

If you wonder why I labelled Thibbs's edit as vandalism, it's because it looked like that. It was a removal of another editor's comments, which is a very serious concern. After a reasonable examination of the IP's behavior, it didn't seem to be any problem with his conduct. Sincerely, it looked like a user reverting another one after a grudge from previous discussions. Since there weren't (and still isn't) any direct evidence about previous misbehavior by the IP, removing other people's comments is to be considered disruptive. If it's a very serious thing to do, why did you do it after such an inadequate appraisal of the situation? Again, it should not be too much to ask you to check out a blatant troll yourself. Censorship? Oh please. That is truly unfounded and insulting. I understand that you were confused by my brief edit summary and I am ready to entertain your criticism that it should have been clearer in order to comply with best practices, but identifying my edit as vandalism goes too far and accusing me of censorship is a direct assumption of bad faith. My lack of evidence to back up my assertion of the IP editor's vandalism != evidence of vandalism on my part. Describing it as censorship paints me in an extremely negative light. Consider my edit in light of the IP editor's edit history that bridies has provided above as well as that of his other IP accounts (e.g. here and here), this admission by the IP editor that he is editing in evasion of a block, and this series of civil non-content-disputing back-and-forths between me and the IP editor, and be honest with yourself. Are you really justified in describing my edit as vandalism and censorship or was your assessment based on a lack of information and an unwarranted assumption of bad faith? I'll take responsibility for the lack of information since my edit summary was so brief, but in return it would be nice to see some sort of acknowledgement that your claims of censorship and vandalism are incorrect. -Thibbs (talk) 23:07, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

I'm fine recognizing that I wouldn't describe your edit as vandalism now. I would have not tagged your edit as vandalism if the information linking the two IPs had been made available from the beginning. And I didn't assume bad faith, only improper procedure. Vandalism does not imply bad faith (there's also the naïf didn't-know-better variety); it's just a name for disruptive editing, which yours was precisely because of the lack of information - at least until the extra information justifying it was provided.

As for the claim of censorship, you may call it "removal of other people's additions to talk page", if you find that less offensive than the 'C' word. Were you allowed to do it under the community rules? Yes, because of the user's behavior with the other IPs (but not with the one that was reverted). Were there enough information to justify your removal at the time you did it and I reverted it? No, which is was started this situation. A simple "sockpuppet" warning in the edit comment would have been enough clue to point out that this was not an isolated account. Diego (talk) 08:43, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

It's certainly not an accurate characterization and I think the facts bear that much out convincingly. The evidence for the propriety of my removal of the sock-puppeted polemic on the talk page is hidden in plain view, splashed all across the talk page history. Anyway call it what you will. I've already acknowledged that I could have been clearer in my edit summary and I'm sorry to see that you won't get off your moral high horse to meet me half way. New Pages newsletter

Hey all :)

A couple of new things.

First, you'll note that all the project titles have now changed to the Page Curation prefix, rather than having the New Pages Feed prefix. This is because the overarching project name has changed to Page Curation; the feed is still known as New Pages Feed, and the Curation Toolbar is still the Curation Toolbar. Hopefully this will be the last namechange ;p.

On the subject of the Curation Toolbar (nice segue, Oliver!) - it's now deployed on Wikipedia. Just open up any article in the New Pages Feed and it should appear on the right. It's still a beta version - bugs are expected - and we've got a lot more work to do. But if you see something going wrong, or a feature missing, drop me a note or post on the project talkpage and I'll be happy to help :). We'll be holding two office hours sessions to discuss the tool and improvements to it; the first is at 19:00 UTC on 14 August, and the second at 23:00 on the 15th. They include flyouts from the icons in Special:NewPagesFeed, showing who reviewed an article and when, a listing of this in the "info" flyout, and a general re-jigging of the info flyout - we've also fixed the weird bug with page_titles_having_underscores_instead_of_spaces in messages sent to talkpages, and introduced CSD logging! As always, these features will need some work - but any feedback would be most welcome.

Page Curation newsletter

Hey Diego Moya. This will be, if not our final newsletter, one of the final ones :). After months of churning away at this project, our final version (apart from a few tweaks and bugfixes) is now live. Changes between this and the last release include deletion tag logging, a centralised log, and fixes to things like edit summaries.

I am indeed grateful to you as you provided me with utmost support and help to learn more about Wikipedia and its articles and images. If you remember the two artwork images from artist Manav Gupta’s article (File:Painting created by Manav Gupta.jpg and File:Manav Gupta's acrylic on canvas,.jpg,) that were deleted because they had no source, I would like to take your advice and help on proper reloading of at least one signature work of that artist to highlight his work and style. It is important for the understanding of the subject. The image of the mural, stabilized after all debate exemplifies a very notable creation which is a world record. You helped by playing such a positive neutral role. The artist’s multifaceted repertoire would only get understood and exemplified better in the article when at least one representative image of his signature style in painting is uploaded.

Page Curation newsletter - closing up!

Hey all :).

We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. If you've got ideas for features Page Curation doesn't currently have, stick them here.

This is not a newsletter

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. Proposed deletion of List of LGBT characters in video games

The article List of LGBT characters in video games has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Article is entirely original research and furthermore it is not even a list of LGBT characters, but rather just a talk about LGBT themes, which already exists at LGBT themes in video games, which has sources and is not original research.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. AFT5 newsletter

Hey all :). A couple of quick updates (one small, one large)

First, we're continuing to work on some ways to increase the quality of feedback and make it easier to eliminate and deal with non-useful feedback: hopefully I'll have more news for you on this soon :).

Second, we're looking at ways to increase the actual number of users patrolling and take off some of the workload from you lot. Part of this is increasing the prominence of the feedback page, which we're going to try to do with a link at the top of each article to the relevant page. This should be deployed on Tuesday (touch wood!) and we'll be closely monitoring what happens. Let me know if you have any questions or issues :). Er, no, the gender characterizations such as the "red bow on her head", "round mouth that can fire eggs" and "large diamond ring on her finger" are also being illustrated by the image. Maybe the bow and the diamond are not relevant to her sex (although laying eggs certainly does), but they're relevant to the gender. There's a reason why images are allowed at all by the NFCCs, you know, and it usually has to be because visual information is also information. Don't be too quick to dismiss it. The reason you provided wasn't even utilized until now, and certainly isn't good because the image used provides poor perspective on the growth of her character design because it is not even in colour. "It's not in color?" That's your argument to say that it doesn't comply with the guidelines??!! The important thing about this image is that it shows the context of Birdo being introduced for the first time as transsexual. This is how players learned for the first time that the pink dinosaur with a bow on the head was a 'he', not a 'she'. You don't get that from the boxart nor the gameplay screenshots; and the information is not purely textual, so the image is required to provide the whole story. For illustrating the design's growth, the image is awful. The context can be explained with text. Do you mean to argue that readers may be confused if we do not provide visual illustration of the text and the fact that it was scanned from a black and white manual? Readers are not dumb; they do not need to have all of the details in one image. Readers can take from the article that the manual called Birdo a guy, and they can take from the image that Birdo has feminine features. - New Age Retro Hippie (talk) (contributions) 06:51, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

But they couldn't tell if Birdo had feminine features in the manual, where the "he's a boy" sentence appeared, and how those features appeared in that context. That's the whole point. If you use other images to convey those points, you don't see how they appear in that one image, the most important one to the character's origin. If having several images is redundant to the point of exceeding WP:NFCC#2a (which I don't think is true, but just in case), then the other images should be deleted, not this one. That's not at all true. Readers can be told through free text that Birdo has always featured feminine characteristics. There, now readers will assume this is true for the manual. The other images illustrate the subject and illustrate the origin. Ya kiddin' me? Well, first off, let me go through... it certainly does not forbid two images from featuring the same information, but it does weaken the rational for the image. As such, showing Birdo is less important for the manual image because it's one of three images that do. The lead image can be used for a variety of things, including demonstrating that Birdo is a feminine character. Websites use the image because it's the one image that would best describe it AND because they don't have a similar free image goal. We have exceptions, the fair use images, because Wikipedia acknowledges that not all subjects can be adequately understood without fair use images. What I see in your argument, at least in the "reduced time for finding the text for readers", is stretching the limitations to allow many images that simply do not belong on Wikipedia. The image simply does not do enough. We have to have standards, and providing an easier way for readers to find a line of text is a very soft standard to apply. If this manual is considered fair use considering the other images available on the article, then it would open a floodgate of images that illustrate a minor element of the subject that is not covered. That the line appears in the manual can be told through text. Birdo's appearance can be told through text and the other images. That Birdo has always been feminine in all her incarnations can be told through text and other images. That the manual was used in third party articles on the subject is a good additional comment, not a good primary one. - New Age Retro Hippie (talk) (contributions) 00:48, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

It wouldn't "open the flood of images". Each case must be independently assessed, and when a rule prevent us from improving Wikipedia, we must ignore it regardless of what the rule means at other places. This is essential to Wikipedia. when you put compliance with rules before article improvement, you're going against one core policy. There are many reasons why allowing this image here wouldn't work at other places, so your precious standard is safe; the decision we take here to improve the encyclopedia won't affect how the NFC is applied to other cases. P.S. I added the "reduced time for finding the text for readers" at the last minute and I hesitated before adding it because it didn't pertain to the case of Birdo's manual. Infobox person Spouse and Partner parameters

I've replied at Template talk:Infobox person. Your compromise edit on Natalie Portman didn't hold for long, which imho confirms that a template-side solution is required. I'm not sure how else this could be solved, other than to unify the parameters. Special solutions (i.e. deviations from normal parameter usage) on individual articles are usually not a workable approach when it comes to handling infobox parameters, especially not on highly visible articles like Natalie Portman's.

Alas, I freely acknowledge, as well I should, that I'm saying this from the perspective of someone who already believes (even if there weren't additional complications) that the emphasis which the template currently places on marriage is undue and also potentially OR (see my reply to Musdan77). --78.35.245.52 (talk) 17:28, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

8th Gen Consoles

I support minor and other consoles being added to the 8th gen category. A small cabal of editors is keeping everything else out. "We need to wait for third party sources!" "Nobody can agree on what a generation is!" "But what seems like common sense to you is crazy to everyone else!" "There's no consensus!"

One problem is that people (users, IP's) keep editing to add things, but then don't stick around to voice their opinion on the talk page. Another is that the editors most active seem very reluctant to add anything that isnt Nintendo-Sony-Microsoft. -Kai445 (talk) 06:32, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

I saw that you added this information back.[2] But the reason that User:Writ Keeper had removed it[3] is because it was added by a WP:Sockpuppet (User:MikeFromCanmore) and we are supposed to revert sockpuppet edits. He's been very destructive at that article. Being familiar that you are someone who supports LGBT material, I don't think that you want to support this guy. Are you going to keep supporting him at that article just because his information is sourced with reliable references? Sure, that's an interesting proposal by a Wikipedian I respect; that doesn't magically mean that it ceases to be a minority view, and nor does it change the policies that we currently have. If you feel that the system needs to be changed, go ahead, offer an alternative, point out the problems with the current system and so forth. Do not disrupt individual AfDs. Again, to use the GAC analogy, it's completely fine to disagree with the good article criteria, and you can certainly start discussions about changing them, but trying to enforce your own personal criteria while they are not the criteria is disruptive. AFT5 newsletter

Hey all; another newsletter.

• If you're not already aware, a Request for Comment on the future of the Article Feedback Tool on the English-language Wikipedia is open; any and all comments, regardless of opinion and perspective, are welcome.
• Our final round of hand-coding is complete, and the results can be found here; thanks to everyone who took part!
• We've made test deployments to the German and French-language projects; if you are aware of any other projects that might like to test out or use the tool, please let me know :).

This is not a reliable source. It is an opinion piece submitted to The Daily Barometer, OSU's student newspaper. It's not an actual article in a reputable news paper so it fails WP:RS.

Secondly, it is synthesis to use the Variety and Independent articles, neither of which mention 4chan in any fashion, to make a statement about 4chan (the Variety one is dead and this only mentions MLP in a single sentence).

Yume Nikki

Hi Diego, I'd noticed that Yume Nikki had been added to "Art game" earlier today, but the reason I didn't migrate it to talk for the "artistic games" list is because it already appears on the list of artistic games. I thought the repository in talk would mainly serve as a staging area for people who wanted to expand the list from a pool of likely candidates, but since there wasn't even a source offered I feel the Yume Nikki entry is redundant. Would you mind if I struck it through and added a note to show that it's part of the list already? Like this:

• Yume Nikki (2004, Kikiyama, PC) A independently produced surreal game by homebrew developer Kikiyama. (added to list w/ RS source)

I'm saying that, if you don't feel like doing the proper work to clean up the section as it should be, you leave a link to the diff of your edit at the talk page (like this one) so that someone can do it for you. I am cleaning it up. 99.9% of the examples I removed are just passing mentions that have no bearing on the subject as a whole — they are just stuff like "The fence around the backyard of the house in The Simpsons is wooden." You're missing the point. You're not supposed to be the only person to decide whether each entry is significant - this is a collaborative wiki, your deletions must be subject to review. For that end, behavioral policies mandate editors to advertise and explain what they're doing - and deleting a whole section without leaving a note at talk page is against that, since article's history gets buried too fast. (Moreover, what is significant is not decided on editor's opinion but on appearances on reliable sources. Did you research *all* entries you deleted to confirm that none have coverage on RSs? I noticed you reverted my removal of that image with some new references. That's cool, and if other editors are happy that they establish its significance, great. I thought I should mention though, that the image is currently nominated for deletion, and you might not have noticed that, so you might want to comment there, or provide some rationale for using it as a non-free image, which is what it is, not a "self-made" image, which is what it was uploaded as. Due weight in Metro (design language)

I hope I am not bothering but I'd like to have a word with you about your edit in Metro (design language) lead. You see, I do not think it is a fair representation of what the body or sources says; while the report of lawsuit is more like a rumor and there is no record of it ever being brought forward, let alone having received a verdict, your sentence reads like a fait accompli.

Initially, I decided that it best remove the whole thing but then I thought perhaps a fair summary of that entire section is in order. But in case you disagree with any of these, I'd be glad to discuss a next mutual move.
