Summary sections

[edit]

Please note that the lead (sometimes spelled lede) is SUPPOSED to be a summary. Literally a summary. That means a lede will contain the same information to be found later in the article, but in condensed form. SBHarris 01:44, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please see WP:LEAD. It should be an overview of the entire article. Ezra Pound is in the process of a major rewrite and the lead had problems, so it was cut back a few days ago, but will be reinstated. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 02:05, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stats.grok.se

[edit]

I saw on User talk:Henrik that you had questions about the page view calculator at http://stats.grok.se:

In the banner of the count itself, the program read, "Omar_al-Bashir has been viewed 1405 times in 201007". What is "201007"?

It's the year followed by the month in two-digit form: 2010, month 07, is July 2010.

As well, in the graphical distribution, the x-axis seems to have no value other than a repeated series of 0's, what value is it supposed to represent?

There is an x-axis at the top of the graph that runs from 1 to 31, representing the days of the month. At the bottom of the graph, the zeroes represent either days that haven't happened yet, or days for which the page traffic statistics are either missing or not available yet. You will notice at User talk:Henrik that several other editors have asked if statistics for certain missing days are going to show up; I wondered that myself, but I assume that Henrik will give a response eventually. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 17:57, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for that. It clears up everything, especially in that I was an idiot and misread the chart. Thank you. Cwill151 (talk) 19:52, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pretty open to putting whatever on the template...If it's in good faith, not making a point, and honestly needing feedback, I'm okay with it. See my other comments on WT:ITN. SpencerT♦C 15:12, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That is absolutely fine with me: I'd actually like the publicity. I do seriously think it's helpful to vent, and I put that up so people know they have a safe zone. I'll get back to you with more later; I've gotta go to work for a few hours now. The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 21:51, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

All right, and feel free to come by my page if you ever need help. I've only been around for a few months, but ever since the whole fiasco with this guy's admin recall, I've gotten really into Wikipedia, and I understand the inner workings fairly well. Also, out of curiosity, how did you end up at my userpage? I'm glad you did, just wondering if I left a comment somewhere that you found interesting, or if it was just total serendipity. The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 02:06, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks!! Right now, I'm carrying out the highly unenviable task of decapitalizing dog names, which is harder than you might think (dog enthusiasts, horse lovers, and ornithologists insist that names be capitalized, even though it's not at all encyclopedic; this isn't Victorian English), and I'm working on reconstructing the Autobiography of a Geisha page, which is so rough that I've created my own subpage to work on and gradually build up, and copy my work over as I do. It's a hard one, because it's obviously notable but has so few secondary sources in either Japanese or English. But I'd rather do that than try to edit something like Climate Change now. Also, nice to know my comments are getting a little attention; I like to think I'm helpful. The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 16:37, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's capitalization of common names, which can be a bit confusing. Dogs like St. Bernard, Great Dane, and Dalmatian are capitalized, because they're proper nouns, but pug and pit bull aren't. There's also the in-between stuff, like Yorkshire terrier, Cardigan (and Pembroke) Welsh corgi, and German shepherd, which can be very tough. With Autobiography of a Geisha, I've only gotten the first section fixed, because I've had some serious real-life time constraints (going into senior year as a history major, getting ready to apply for grad school). However, I'll definitely work on it some tonight, as I finally have some time. I didn't know the second one at all (thanks a ton, that'll actually be helpful for secondary coverage); I know about cupblog.com (the translator is a professor there), and had to defend its usage (people don't realize that cup is an acronym for Columbia University Press). My Japanese is very basic, but it's pretty easy to look up kanji if necessary. I feel obligated to fix Autobiography of a Geisha, because I love that book; I'm one of the only men who's read it, it seems. Well, I took a look through your work, and I may drop by a few of those pages myself- it actually looks quite interesting. See you around!! The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 22:36, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ouch, sounds rough. Hope you get that finished, so I can see you around here more ;). Seriously, though, you seem to do a lot of good work, and I hope we both have enough time to keep on working here. The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 23:14, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, you're correct, I did pick up on that. Thanks for noticing. The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 02:07, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm... I'll take a more comprehensive look tomorrow- I'll have the house to myself- but my template skills aren't particularly good. My knowledge of Wikipedia is more in the collaborative sense, although I do have a basic understanding of templates (I work in CSD a lot, I have to). I do know of someone who specializes in templatespace, User:Thumperward, who was just given adminship (I supported him) and can probably help if we get stuck. He seems like the type who'd get along with us just fine. As for the dictator (let's be honest) of Sudan, I'm actually quite interested in African history, and I can definitely spend some time on that. In particular, for the moment I'll see if I can work in some more on his relations with China, as that's become a major sticking point in Asia, especially with the Vietnamese. I'd be quite eager to work on it some, especially as I'll be alone for the next 4 days, so I can claim dual credit for editing here and doing some academic reading (I took an Islamic Fundamentalism class a semester ago, so my interest was piqued, and Sudan was/is a harbor for many of those types, including every American's favorite man). And yes, that fucking ridiculous argument is finally dying down; I think Jack put it best. It looks like the complaintant is looking to end up like a certain WP:FOOTBALLPLAYERWHOSHALLNOTBENAMED (this guy). See you around!! The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 05:15, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What you say makes perfect sense to me, as I (an American) would not have half the knowledge of such subjects as MickMacNee, who is obviously European (to use him as an example). Common sense around here seems not to be particularly pervasive at times, but I think that you/we should at least give it a shot. That would reduce the difficulty for those of us who don't speak different languages, and who don't have the same internal knowledge (and by extension the ability to find different sources), and it would give users with said knowledge an ability to add better content if they ran across something that they knew wasn't quite right. As an aside, I wasn't aware that bullfighting was attracting so much ire from animal rights groups; I know in the US we have PETA (who drive me fucking crazy), but I didn't think the Spanish would care about a thousands-year old tradition. People are weird like that. The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 18:45, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I can think of a couple... Lar and DerHexer are both stewards, who are active on multiple wikis and would be experienced at this sort of thing. HJ Mitchell would be excellent; he's only been an admin since April, but is very widely respected, and is highly active on WikiNews and other projects. He's probably our best shot, and he's also got a great working relationship with Thumperward, who'd be by far the best for template design. I/you/we can give him a shout sometime in the near future, and see what he makes of it; I think the above users will like the idea. The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 03:13, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good catch with Physchim62, he'll be good. As for your idea... I think it'll make translations a lot better, and will overall improve quality of articles. I'm not quite sure how we'd technically pull it off, but that can be worked out with the developers. As for anyone else, I'll try to contact Future Perfect at Sunrise, who seems to speak multiple languages and is very high up in the "admin hierarchy", and Tim Song, who speaks Chinese, and see what they can do. Right now there's the whole dramafest with Climate Change, so a lot of admin time is being drained, but I think the above two admins are only peripherally, if at all, involved in that fracas. The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 16:10, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I used to be a pitcher, but now I've got a torn labrum, and I can't exercise it much (at least until late August, I might be able to get the necessary surgery) so I spend a lot more time here. I'd have taken care of contacting those two earlier, but I had some unexpected real life events come up, which resulted in me being cut off from the Internet for two days. Also, I got involved a bit at the dramaboard, where a lot of admins go. I only participate in a few discussions; however, I watch who shows up there, and those two names come up every once in a while. I found HJ Mitchell by total chance; he's the one who gave me reviewer rights (and I think I'll ask him for rollback soon), he probably just saw my name at ANI (and I think I know what discussion). I know I have a good connection now, so I'll be more active over the next few days. The Blade of the Northern Lights (talk) 01:58, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
