Just a note

Hi Crisco, with this edit, you removed a nomination added by me a minute before. I wonder if you got any edit conflict ? --Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 02:33, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

  • Crisco, you don't need to edit the whole T:TDYK when removing a date: just edit the date section, and strip out the contents including the header. I've never had a collision doing that. It's what I did a about an hour and a half ago when removing the "Articles created/expanded on September 19" section. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:37, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Crisco, I was informed by DYKHousingkeepingbot that my DYK nomination was not included on the nominations page, and realized that with this edit, you again removed my nomination. I am sure, you must have got an edit conflict this time too. WP software warns when an edit conflict occurs and shows the new texts and old texts. So, I can't understand how you ended up removing the nomination again. Please add my nomination in the correct date section. --Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 05:41, 29 November 2014 (UTC)
    • Simple: the change didn't show up in the difference. I don't know why. T:TDYK definitely needs to have its fat trimmed. It's difficult to edit on slower connections. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:16, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

Image reduction for beginners

Hello Crisco, hope I am not bothering too much with my noob questions, but could you give me 1-2 quick tips about image reduction please? What (free) software would you recommend? (I currently have Gimp 2, IrfanView, Inkscape and the default MS Paint to offer). Are there any special settings to consider? I recently used IrfanView with standard settings, but that probably didn't lead to ideal results (see previous version of File:The-best-exotic-marigold-hotel.jpg). Thanks for any advice. GermanJoe (talk) 01:41, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

  • Thank you. Scaled the image to the current size and exported it to JPG with quality 95 (in the final small JPG-settings window). The resulting file is with 73 KB noticeable bigger than the current one with 40 KB. Am I doing something else wrong or does the size even matter with a few KB more? GermanJoe (talk) 05:20, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
  • All it influences is the amount of compression (bigger number = less compression = bigger file size = higher quality), which is not dealt with under current policy. Current policy only limits the absolute number of pixels. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:39, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

This new article has now a rather big file, but rather dark, that I found ... actually wanted to m´nominate that picture - but I am not to happy with it. Ceoil changed the previous one to this one, but I imagine he would be happy with a new brighter one too... Wonder what you think about it, the one used and the possibility to get an other one. Wonder if this pic might be good enough? Maybe not - 671 x 816.

And anyway to delete that same period of history from Moana, so that it looks like an article that has only has revision history between 11:02, July 27, 2014‎ and now. Yes, that was the one we chose for the lead, Grey fawn puppy lead pic. It was in the article since then. A couple items

Hi Crisco. I was trying not to bother you while your Wiki-break tag was up, indicating you were busy in real-life. I was wondering if you had a minute to look at a couple things. Specifically, this NPOV tag added to a GA-ranked page I improved, due to concerns posted on Talk here about its work rebuilding Iraq and the Publishers Clearing House article, where I got a 3PO opinion here. The 3PO indicated the page was not encyclopedic and had excessive detail about controversial events. There was no clear consensus on how to structure the article. CorporateM (Talk) 17:04, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

  • You know you're writing neutrally when people are accusing you of promoting both sides... Have you tried talking about the NPOV tag with Exit? Also, really now, an article which completely ignores historical controversies...? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 17:11, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
user:Exit8's post is critical of my involvement. I did ping him on user:Maclean25's Talk page (he was the GA reviewer). I don't think the "controversy" actually exists. The book claims RTI staff boasted that Iraqi citizens would create a statue in their honor as a symbol of democracy and accuses them of trying to spread mormon values and blocking voting. All pretty bold claims I have not seen in other sources. Looks like political fodder to me. CorporateM (Talk) 17:20, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
Found one. CorporateM (Talk) 17:51, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) That explains the bookshop bore I overheard yesterday, pontificating on the role of capitalism in the Middle East. Klein's got another book out. "In fact, RTI was driven out of the country after it helped block local Islamic parties from democratically taking power in several cities and towns." "Local Islamic parties"? Shi'ite or Sunni? What tribes did they represent? If RTI were driven out of Iraq over this alleged interference who drove them out? The opponents of the Islamic parties that RTI "blocked"? Is Klein's book an RS? Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 08:23, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
Oh, here is a third minor item, if you or one of your stalkers like Xanthomelanoussprog have time. An IP added a bit of linkbait, though external links are not allowed in the body of articles and another user added a lot of primary sources, including some kind of crowd-sourced review site, which is clearly not an RS. Thomas Gainsborough

I see that an editor reinserted a comma in a file name for one of the images in the gallery in this article, at Thomas Gainsborough#Gallery after User:Rothorpe had removed it. I suppose the editor is right since one mustn't change what's in the name of an image file. However, Rothorpe is right that there should not be two commas there either side of the measurements in parentheses. I'm wondering, since you're so familiar with images and image files, whether you could correct the file name by removing at least one of those two commas. Since it doesn't show up in the caption, it's not a big deal, but for editors like myself and Rothorpe, incorrect punctuation grates on the nerves. CorinneSD (talk) 22:33, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

Interesting one for you

Start wtih Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, a 1948 Universal release (all material under copyright via renewals). Throw in Realart Pictures Inc., a company who leased the entire Universal "B" pictures catalog for 10 years, starting in 1946. Realart issued their own lobby cards and posters-most are without copyright marks as opposed to the Universal ones. Realart re-released these films under their own name with no mention of their Universal origin.

Realart issued this insert poster for their 1956 re-release of the film. It has a 1956 copyright mark for Realart Pictures. Checking copyright.gov shows nothing that relates to the motion picture company or any renewals of their material. Can we use the poster as a freebie replacement for the copyrighted Universal one?

I've been replacing some with Realart posters because they weren't copyright marked. The Invisible Ray (1936 film) and Follow the Boys are two I've found so far. My thought is that there should be no problem with the Realart non-renewal as this company had leased these films from Universal and these promotions were created and published during the term of that lease. There are also stills from these films marked as Realart; as mentioned above, Realart renewed nothing from 1978 on (haven't had the need to check catalogs as yet). We hope (talk) 16:15, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

  • We hope, assuming that the artwork is entirely original, it should be free. But you'd have to check to see if they were reusing old artwork or not. Now, whether or not to use it in the article... I think policy would rather we use the free files, but a lot of editors would say that the original posters would have more EV. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 17:03, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

January

Hello Crisco 1492! I saw by chance that the beautiful picture of Anthocharis cardamines is scheduled for the first of January as POTD. It made me remeber that while I was suggesting the Freedom Monument in Riga for Featured picture, you commented that you'd be willing to schedule it for the same date, as Latvia on that day assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. If you changed your mind and don't want to schedule it then, I'm very happy with the butterfly as well, but I thought I might give you a heads up because perhaps you forgot it? Anyway, have a nice weekend! Best, Yakikaki (talk) 14:16, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

Crisco, I've done what research I can on the image being used here and in the article; if it's problematic for the one, it's probably problematic for the other ... but I'm not sure of that, and you're the expert here. I've deferred to you to make the decision. Thanks for whatever you can do; I've gone as far as I can. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:16, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

September Morn lead

For many months, the reference to the "porn" interpretation of the painting read: "She is leaning slightly forward in an ambiguous posture, which has been read variously as an attempt to protect the model's modesty, huddle against the cold, sponge bathe, or as a fetishization of innocence." Dank removed "fetishization of innocence" with this edit summary: "Removing "fetishization of innocence", because it was presented as a fourth option, but it actually doesn't rule out any of the other options. Is there another way to present it?" It was indeed poorly phrased, so I did indeed present it another way.

I'm sure Dank edited in good faith, but in the circumstances, it's they who should have discussed at FAC first. Until then, either the version prior to their edit, or my reworked version, should stand.

I'm therefore asking you to self-revert.

(Also, since the whole controversy over the painting is whether or not it's pornographic, it's by no means giving undue weight to say so in the lead).

Awien (talk) 12:46, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

  • My reading of the controversy is not that (as indecency is not necessarily pornography, and indecency is mentioned prominently in the third paragraph). Regarding Dank's edit, we can ask him if he thinks it is better to reinsert said quote. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:49, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
First, we restore the content that was removed by Dank on purely stylistic grounds (either version, "... an attempt to protect the model's modesty, huddle against the cold, sponge bathe, or as a fetishization of innocence", or "either as a straightforward portrayal of the young woman attempting to protect her modesty or huddled against the cold, or as the artist’s fetishization of innocence by the use of a conventionally provocative posture portrayed from a voyeuristic point of view"), then we discuss the pros and cons of its inclusion if you really want to go there again. Oh, and it's fine by me to re-add the ludicrous sponge-free sponge bath to the latter version if you wish. Awien (talk) 13:45, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
As I said, feel free to revert. I make prose calls; it's up to the people who care about the article to decide what the article should say. - Dank (push to talk) 14:03, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
  • (ec) I agree that the sponge-bathing is a ridiculous interpretation, but it has been made. I also am almost 100% sure that it wasn't the original which was displayed in New York, but since the sources are more ambiguous it would be OR and POV to discount it out of hand. Your second suggested sentence is still WP:UNDUE, as every other description is given two or three words, not a full clause. The "fetishization of innocence" line should go back in, agree. I missed that it was removed (the Christmas season has been crazy). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:06, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
  • (ec) I was going to revert Awien's edit last night but had to shut down the computer and then Crisco got to it before me this morning, so, my opinion is to leave it out. I thought it was undue when it was first raised all those 1000's of bytes ago. SagaciousPhil - Chat 14:11, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
Dank was right that this is an awful sentence, both for the reason he stated, and because as it stands at present it means attempting to huddle against the cold, etc., instead of actually huddled/huddling against the cold etc. Setting aside "undue weight" without prejudice, here nevertheless is a version that we could potentially adopt without unleashing WW IV:
She is leaning slightly forward in an ambiguous posture, which has been read either as a straightforward portrayal of the young woman attempting to protect her modesty, huddled against the cold, or sponge bathing, or alternatively that the posture is employed disingenuously, as a fetishisation of innocence.
  • Awien, what about "She is leaning slightly forward in an ambiguous posture, which has been read either as a straightforward portrayal of protecting her modesty, huddling against the cold, or sponge bathing; it has also been considered employed disingenuously as a fetishisation of innocence." or something similar. The suggested wording should be okay with reviewers (I hope), but the sentence is a bit lengthy. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:09, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
Or re-re-re-re-tweaking, we could split it into two sentences: "She is leaning slightly forward in an ambiguous posture, which has been read variously as a straightforward portrayal of protecting her modesty, huddling against the cold, or sponge bathing. It has also been considered employed disingenuously as a fetishisation of innocence." But I'm OK with either. Awien (talk) 12:57, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Image file type and rendering

This whole business about some file formats displaying better in WP than others—has anyone asked the MediaWiki devs about making a solution in software instead of having to upload everything in duplicate formats? Or am I missing something in this regard? Figured you would know czar  04:30, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

  • Lots of people have. The only reason TIFs of the size you uploaded are supported is because the Germans went and had someone do it, because the WMF wasn't moving. Apparently equal treatment of files is lower on the WMF's list than making giant fundraiser banners. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:00, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

Your assistance please...

You closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Muhammed al-Darbi, which included Muhammad Assad, Salah 'Ali Qaru and Muhammed al-Darbi.

The United States Senate Intelligence Committee published a 600 page unclassified summary of its 6,700 page secret repot. The summary named all three of these men as individuals whose torture had not been authorized, even by John Woo's famous memos. The summary named these three men as individuals who had been "wrongfully detained". Press reports have picked up on this.

Um, you didn't actually offer any explanation of your closure.

Now that new sources have emerged your decision not to explain your closure doesn't really offer any help to anyone considering deciding whether adding new references would justify restoration.

So, I'd appreciate you reviewing your closure, and offering the reasoning behind it. Geo Swan (talk) 06:23, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

  • AFDs do not depend on sources that were not available at the time they were closed (two years and four months? Seriously.). Consensus in that case was patently obvious, and does not require a closing rationale. If they are notable now, then you are free to recreate the articles. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:59, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
    • I asked you to offer your original closing rationale. You have declined on the grounds it was "patently obvious", but your comment ("AFDs do not depend on sources that were not available at the time they were closed (two years and four months? Seriously.") seems to imply your closure was based on a lack of good references. For the record I think sufficient good references existed in 2012, at the time of the nomination. I think anyone who really complied with WP:BEFORE would have found references -- as for example the following four examples of references for Muhammad Assad, that predated the AFD.
  1. Andy Worthington (2011-03-02). "US rendition and torture: A new front for accountability opens up in Djibouti Featured". Cageprisoner. Archived from the original on 2011-03-05. Retrieved 2014-12-14. Described by the Post as "a quasi-judicial body that has jurisdiction over nations that have ratified the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, which includes Djibouti," the case involves Mohammed al-Asad, a Yemeni who was seized on December 26, 2003 at his home in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, where he had lived since 1985, and was then blindfolded and flown to a secret CIA prison in Djibouti {{cite news}}: Italic or bold markup not allowed in: |publisher= (help); Unknown parameter |deadurl= ignored (|url-status= suggested) (help)
  2. "USA/Djibouti: Torture case filed at the ACHPR". Atlas of Torture. 2011-03-01. Archived from the original on 2014-12-14. A case filed confidentially in 2009 at the African Commission on Human and People's Rights (ACHPR) could become the first international case linking an African country directly to the CIA's rendition program. Human rights groups hope that the ACHPR will thoroughly investigate the claims by Mohammed al-Asad who allegedly was tortured in secret prisons in Djibouti, Afghanistan and Eastern Europe. {{cite news}}: Italic or bold markup not allowed in: |publisher= (help); Unknown parameter |deadurl= ignored (|url-status= suggested) (help)
  3. Helen Duffy. "Al Asad v Djibouti, African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights". Human Rights in Practice. Archived from the original on 2014-12-14. Mohammed al-Asad is a Yemeni national who was detained in Djibouti in late 2003/early 2004 as part of the CIA's rendition programme. He was transferred from there to secret 'black site' detention for sixteen months, before being transferred to Yemen, where he currently resides. {{cite news}}: Italic or bold markup not allowed in: |publisher= (help); Unknown parameter |deadurl= ignored (|url-status= suggested) (help)
  4. "PROMOTION AND PROTECTION OF ALL HUMAN RIGHTS, CIVIL, POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL RIGHTS, INCLUDING THE RIGHT TO DEVELOPMENT" (PDF). United Nations General Assembly Human Rights Council. 2010-02-19. Archived from the original (PDF) on 2010-03-01. So, what if your closing rationale said something like: "I am closing as 'delete' because I believe nominator's claims of no good references," and I then left a note here showing there were lots of good references? Would you have restored the articles where I showed there were good references? Would you have relisted the AFD? Would you have advised me to make a formal request for a deletion review?
In all three cases, an attempt on your part to explain your rationale, at the time, would have been extremely helpful to all involved. I think it would have been the collegial thing for you to do. I strongly encourage you to always leave a helpful closing rationale, no matter how "obvious" you think things are.
Even if you are confident no-one participating in an AFD is a newbie I suggest a rationale that spells out your reasoning is still important. A newbie may come along, later, try to start an article with that name, see that they are recreating an article that was once deleted, go to the AFD, and be puzzled because of your decision not to explain yourself.
When you think your rationale for a closure is truly "patently obvious" shouldn't it be a trivial matter of a few seconds to add a short one sentence rationale that points to the appropriate wikipolicy or guideline?
However, I am genuinely puzzled as to how you can assert this was a "patently obvious" closure, since I thought I offered coherent counter-arguments. I am puzzled how any closure where the other side offered meaningful coherent counter-arguments could be considered "patently obvious". Geo Swan (talk) 02:14, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
  • Your points were specifically countered at the AFD. That you did not agree with how they were countered does not mean others don't, and that you do not see merit in the arguments of others does not mean that others don't (your position, as article creator, is hardly an objective one). If you are trying to say that the AFD closures were incorrect, then please take it up with Wikipedia:Deletion review (though I doubt such an old AFD will be heard). Otherwise, there's not much else. You've asked for a closing comment, and I've stated it was not necessary for that discussion. As far as I'm concerned, a two-and-a-half year old AFD is not something that you need to spend so much time talking over. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:46, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed you are a delegate for Featured lists so I'm wondering if you could help with a quick question. We tried to submit List of municipalities in Yukon for candidacy but it was opposed on the grounds of not having enough items to list (there are 8 municipalities in Yukon). I'm seeking clarification on the minimum number of items that a list can have to be considered featured. I think the article is otherwise quite well done, complete (there are no more municipalities to list) and ready for featured status. Thanks! Mattximus (talk) 21:51, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

  • Personally, as an editor, I consider lists like these to be part of a set, and thus they should all be treated evenly. That means that, even though the Yukon list has only eight entries, the fact that other parts of the series (like Ontario, which BTW has a problem with whitespace where the images interact with the list) have something like a hundred means that it is a viable topic. These things should be standardized, not with 11 province or territory lists and then two merged into the main article.
As an FLC delegate, I would consider the objection to the Yukon list as non actionable, and ignore it. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:34, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
  • Thanks to you both for your encouragement. I have nominated once again, and our project to create a featured topic with lists for all the provinces/territories is back on track! I have linked this discussion so others can see the justification for the low number of municipalities on the list. Mattximus (talk) 21:42, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

Crisco, I hope you're having a great holiday season, and that the New Year will be just as great.

I was wondering whether you could take a look at this nomination. It's a reasonable size now, and the Jennifer Rush section isn't as weak as it had been, but the broken leg (the injury occurred after she finished singing the song on stage) seems to lead into a bit of a disquisition for me. (I'd expect more about the song itself: construction, key, that sort of thing, rather than the injury's affect on the subsequent album.) Even so, do you think it's ready for DYK? I'm having a hard time judging. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:44, 25 December 2014 (UTC)

Gary Cooper images

Hello, Crisco 1492. I could use your help. I recently brought the Gary Cooper article to GA status, and I'm preparing to do a Peer Review prior to FA submission. The Early life section currently has no images, and I recently uploaded two that I wanted to use. I want to make sure these images, from 1903 and 1922, are not copyright protected. The Gary Cooper 1903 image appears in a 1970 book without a copyright statement. I do not know the author or the first date of publication. The Gary Cooper Grinnell College 1922 image is from a college yearbook published in 1922. This appears to be in PD. Could you check both images and let me know if they can be used. If not, please delete them. Regards, Bede735 (talk) 01:53, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

  • The second one (college) is certainly fine. The childhood portrait, if published before 1923 or without a copyright, would be fine... but right now we don't have much. It could have been unpublished until 1970, in which case it would still be protected. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:00, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, Crisco. I'll continue to check old articles to determine first use on the 1903 photo. Bede735 (talk) 12:38, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

Think we can get away with the gallery of three images? I'm not sure, as it does look kind of excessive on the mobile site, but then, so does a lot of Wikipedia. Adam Cuerden (talk) 11:58, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

Just found out my YouTube account has been blocked unless I "acknowledge" what a bad boy I've been for uploading The Sinking of the Lusitania there—apparently Milestone Films have claimed copyright for this film that was already in the public domain for decades before the company was even founded. They demanded it be taken down, and the only way I can fight is to provide YouTube with my name, physical address, etc, if I don't want to click "I acknowledge". Whatever. Screw YouTube—they're not the only game in town. Curly Turkey ¡gobble! 09:28, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

Crisco, I'm relieved to hear it. I have no issue with nudity as such, I have no issue with the article being in the encyclopedia, but I would have an issue with this nude featuring on the main page. Hafspajen, the fact of the article showing up in the Signpost is what revived the issue. I really don't go looking for trouble gratuitously. Awien (talk) 02:05, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

  • All featured content goes in the Signpost FC page. I would recuse myself from TFA duties for this article (don't plan on self-nominating, anyways), and (as is my longstanding promise) open discussion a minimum of one month before the image would be considered for POTD (it being FIFO, that would not happen until 2016 at the earliest). If the discussion were closed with consensus not to include the image, it would go to WP:POTD/Unused, as with the Michelle Merkin image. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:21, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

Hey Crisco. I wanted to ask if you might be interested in mentoring one or more editors during our pilot of the mentorship space called the Co-op. We plan to run the pilot in late January for about one month. The idea is that mentors will be doing one-on-one teaching based on how an editor wants to contribute, and it's not some huge commitment to teach comprehensively about Wikipedia. We also want to make to easier for new editors to find mentors as well. Your experience in the DYK process, featured content, and dealing with deleted materials will definitely be useful for newer editors. If you're interested, please sign up here and feel free to peruse, make suggestions, or ask questions about how the Co-op will work. Thanks a bunch (and Happy New Year! P.S. I've been having these weird thoughts lately. Like, is any of this for real, or not? For me, it feels as real as a theater stage) I, JethroBT drop me a line 04:07, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

Hi Crisco, how are you? I hope you have had a Happy New Year. I'm writing because I want to open a discussion about the copyright status of Rhodesian/Southern Rhodesian government works but am not sure where the right venue for this might be. I have two main questions:

1. From 1923 onwards Southern Rhodesia had responsible government—it had its own government, parliament, armed forces and so on and was essentially independent except for in international relations, which were controlled from London. Would works created by the colonial government be, for copyright purposes:
a) UK government works
b) works of the Southern Rhodesian government (antecedent of the Zimbabwean government)
c) something else?
2. On 11 November 1965 the aforementioned colonial government issued a Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI). Britain had the colonial Governor formally sack the ministers who had declared independence and passed acts essentially outlawing the Rhodesian government, but Rhodesia continued essentially as before except for claiming that it was now a fully independent country. This situation continued until 1979 when the post-UDI government, by now calling itself Zimbabwe-Rhodesia, dissolved itself and Britain took interim control. No country ever formally recognised the post-UDI authorities in Rhodesia but the Rhodesian High Court did from 1968. My question here is this: would works created by the post-UDI government between 1965 and 1979 be, for copyright purposes:
a) works of the Zimbabwean government's antecedent (the Zimbabwean government is successor to the post-UDI government and so holds copyright)
b) works of an entity that no longer exists (the Zimbabwean government is successor to the colonial government, not the post-UDI one, so works of the latter have no copyright protection)
c) works of private citizens and/or groups thereof in Rhodesia (even if the post-UDI government was not recognised, the people in it remained citizens, so the creators should have their works protected to the same extent as non-government works from the same period)
d) something else?

I'd be grateful if you could point me in the right direction as I'm no expert in these matters. Cheers, —  Cliftonian (talk)  11:16, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

  • That's a really difficult set of questions, Cliftonian. For colonial Indonesia, we've so far treated pre-independence works using the modern Indonesian law in determining the duration of copyright; the laws that were in effect at the time a work was created are not considered, just those which are in effect now. I'd expect something similar would apply for Question 1, though it's likely that the UK government could claim copyright (though, I note that, under crown copyright, anything up to 1964 should be free).
The second question is much more difficult. I suspect that a similar principle would apply, and that current Zimbabwean copyright laws would be considered. If the current government recognizes the UDI authorities, then the copyright laws for government should apply. If not, I think copyright laws for private citizens and/or organizations would. Just because an entity doesn't exist any longer doesn't mean its copyright has lapsed; many works by Nazi Germany, for instance, are still copyrighted.
Mind, I'm writing this about five minutes after waking up, so I may be incoherent. Also, as always, IANAL. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:48, 3 January 2015 (UTC)
  • Thanks for taking the time to help me out, Crisco, I really appreciate it. The second question, as you say, is the difficult one but I think your conclusion is basically the right one. The Zimbabwean government does not recognise the UDI authorities as having been the legitimate government—indeed during the Bush War in the '70s one of the key arguments those in government today used was that the post-UDI government was illegal and that Britain should just step in—but for practical purposes Zimbabwe has retained legislation passed under UDI. Zimbabwe's Copyright Act has been altered a couple of times since the handover in 1980, but is still basically based on the act passed under UDI in 1967 (see here). As I said before I would like to open a discussion on this somewhere to get more opinions and try to reach some kind of consensus on this, perhaps with a view to making a Commons tag that could be put on Rhodesian government works in the future. Where would you recommend I open this discussion? —  Cliftonian (talk)  14:04, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

Crisco, I was hoping you could weigh in on this one. It's a hook with about three dozen articles, and there is material common to all of them. Vincent van Gogh

Hey Chris

How about File:Vincent van Gogh - Self-Portrait - Google Art Project (454045).jpg POTD for his birthday March 30? --The Herald : here I am 13:46, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

Dutch?

Look what Goethe brought to you, dogie..

What is the shortening of Dutch language? This article was edited to contain a total or partial translation of Goethe in de Campagna from the Nepali Wikipedia - doesn't sounds right. Talk:Goethe in the Roman Campagna Hafspajen (talk) 20:38, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

To late. Mies fixed it. Just [a spelling error]. (in Dutch) versus {{ne}} Hafspajen (talk) 14:54, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

Not that they had much on it. Hafspajen (talk) 14:55, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

So there you go, Henry. the Terrible. What, that's a co-nom. Hafspajen (talk) 19:11, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

Crisco, I was wondering whether you could take a look at this one: the reviewer, who's fairly new, is asking for help related to image issues, and you're the person I thought of. If you'd like to cast your eyes over the rest of it just to be sure its okay, that would be great, too. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:25, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Crisco 1492, wanted to ping you with a minor concern re January POTD's. I rarely contribute in this area and may be off-page with the community standards for POTD's. My concern is that we have two main page images within days of each other this month that prominently feature commercial products (File:Diet Coke Mentos.jpg and File:PS2-Versions.jpg). I have no concern for the quality of the images, just that this schedule is making the main page appear a bit commercial. My suggestion is to update the schedule, perhaps swapping the PS2 file with File:2012-bb-jackal-1.jpg later in the month. Thank you for your consideration. — xaosflux Talk 04:53, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Article naming

Here is an article-naming issue that I am somewhat stumped on. Since I have relied on you for article-title issues in the past, I thought you might have time to take a look. CorporateM (Talk) 20:29, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Sunshine

Sunshine!
Hello Crisco 1492! Pine has given you a bit of sunshine to brighten your day! Sunshine promotes WikiLove and hopefully it has made your day better. Spread the sunshine by adding {{subst:User:Meaghan/Sunshine}} to someone else's talk page, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend. In addition, you can spread the sunshine to anyone who visits your userpage and/or talk page by adding {{User:Meaghan/Sunshine icon}}. Happy editing! Pine 21:26, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

  • Oh, not FP quality. I goofed on the interior, and the exterior was in shadows (church faces south). It's up in the section where I've been putting pictures from my trip back to Canada. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:17, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Ah.. that church is great. I like the trees around it supporting it. Hafspajen (talk) 12:37, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Crisco, are you online? The Featured Picture for today never got created and I haven't the slightest idea how to do it. Yngvadottir (talk) 06:13, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Sorry guys..Yesterday I was busy with Sunday worships..--The Herald : here I am 17:53, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
Apologies to all - I had 5 minutes before I had to run off to work and if I'd known how to fix it, I would have just had time. You chaps have a right to take some time off. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:37, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

TFA: Over to you

I have completed scheduling for January. You may not need it, but I followed Bencherlite's step-by-step guide, which I have stored here. I have kept all the records up do date:

In making my choices I was broadly guided by the category proportions indicated on User:Brianboulton/TFA notepad. The relative dearth of TFAR noms for January made it easier for me to stick close to these proportions, but of course added consiferably to the time I had to spend searching for appropriate noms.

Can I ask that you try to complete February's scheduling by about 10th or 11th of the month, so that I can give proper notice to the early March nominations? Also, please note that I shall be away for 10–11 days from Thursday next.

I hope everything goes well. Dank's work with the blurb writing has been enormously helpful. Brianboulton (talk) 22:22, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
