Lovely unknown art

Katayama Bokuyo? ink on silk
Bonus Italian

Why do they say unknown artist- on file description? [1] [2][3][4] Hafspajen (talk) 06:45, 24 October 2014 (UTC) http://artsconnected.org/resource/78510/forest - Citation: At the young age of twenty-seven, Katayama Bokuyo_ was awarded the grand prize at Japan's annual Imperial Juried Exhibition in 1927. The following year, he submitted this painting showing a weasel nearly hidden in a tangled bed of flowering fishmint (dokudani) deep in the forest. The judges were so impressed that he was given the status of mukansa, literally "non-vetted," meaning that henceforth any painting he submitted to the annual exhibition would be automatically included. Bokuyo_ championed a style of painting collectively known as nihon-ga (literally, Japanese style painting) to distinguish it from Western-style oil painting, which was gaining popularity in Japan. Nihon-ga artists used traditional subjects, formats and materials, but their approach often reveals some influence from the West. Here the logical recession into deep space and subtle color variations to suggest atmospheric depth are the result of Bokuyo_'s exposure to Western art. Nevertheless, the dramatically tipped ground-plain, reduction of motifs, and precisely applied mineral pigments are elements of traditional painting.

Houttuynia cordata. Can't find anything on him, except dates (1900-1937) and a scroll of a fox. Checking out an Ohara Koson woodcut tomorrow. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 06:59, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
Ah, our art collector! Hunting for Japanese woodcuts nowadays? Hafspajen (talk) 07:20, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
Katayama Bokuyo (1900-1937) was born in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, his real name was Kenzo. On the invitation of Nanga he moved to Osaka in 1915, and then to Kyoto in 1917, where he studied with Shoda Tsuru Tomo. In 1921 Katayama moved to Tokyo, to learn Japanese painting under Tsutaya Ryumisakijuku. He exhibited in the 8th Emperor’s Exhibition in 1927 and won first prize. Katayama exhibited his ‘’Forest’’ the following year, being passed automatically for exhibition. In 1929 Katayama’s work ‘’Monou fishing village Spring’’ won the first prize in the 10th Emperor’s Exhibition. After exhibiting in the 1931 exhibition Katayama fell ill, and was unable to exhibit again. source (in Japanese). Machine translation- not 100% reliable! Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 07:23, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
This one is being offered with an English watercolour of flowers- the auctioneer hasn't identified it (and I only could because of a blog post by an expert on woodcuts). Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 07:28, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
So, we need a Xanty to find out that - his real name was Kenzo. Hafspajen (talk) 07:31, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
I don't know- the Japanese artists and craftsmen change their names through their careers, but I don't know about him. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 07:34, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

In 2007 the dealer Jeffrey Cline sold a screen by Katayama Bokuyo (1900-37) to a major US museum for around $90,000 at the Haughton International Asian Art Fair in New York. Explaining that almost no us museums have 20th-century works of the pre-war period, Cline said, 'This is the first year we have seen significant interest for this material from US curators and we are now talking to five American institutions.' Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 12:30, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

Hm, interesting. Houttuynia cordata is a monotypic taxon, very interesting to have a painting with a plant that only grows in Japan. Curly Turkey, you Japanese-Canadian, you help? Hafspajen (talk) 14:57, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
Well, Xanthomelanoussprog, the guesswork of your wild ass deserves commending. The translation still needs work, though—some of the names were wrong (translation software will never be very helpful with Japanese names):
Bokuyō Katayama (片山牧羊; 1900–1937) was born in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. His real name was Kenzō (健三). He moved to Osaka in 1915, began learning Nanga, then moved to Kyoto in 1917, where he studied with Kakuyū Shoda (庄田鶴友; 1879–1948). In 1921 Katayama moved to Tokyo, where he enrolled in Suzuyasha, the private painting school of Tustaya Ryūkō's (蔦谷龍岬; 1886–1933). He exhibited in the 8th Emperor's Exhibition [ja] in 1927 where Oboro (おぼろ "Haze") won a special honour. Katayama exhibited his Mori (森 "Forest") the following year, being passed automatically for exhibition. In 1931
This work (indicating Gyoson Shunrai 漁村春懶 "Lazy Spring in a Fishing Village" (?) to the right) was exhibited at the 10th Emperor's Exhibition in 1929 when Bokuyō was 29. It is a lyrical painting of a fishing village on the southern tip of Chiba Prefecture where peach and rapeseed blossoms bloom. One can feel the tranquility in the expressions of the children and women cuddling infants.
It appears there were three "Emperor Prizes" given out at the time: one for "Nanga", one for Western-style painting, and one for sculpture. I assume he won for Nanga.
This source gives the title of Kagerō in hiragana, but other sources give it in kanji: 陽炎. Good thing it does, because kagerō can also translate as "mayflies" (with different kanji)—and the image of the painting isn't displaying, so I'd hate to have just guessed.
Here's a timeline of Bokuyō. It uses old-form spellings (pre-1946), so "かげろう" is "かげろふ".

World Fantasy Award for Best Collection FLC

Hi, you previously supported the FLC candidacy of World Fantasy Award for Best Collection, before it was archived due to lack of comments. I've now renominated it here; would you consider swinging by and supporting it again? Thanks! --PresN 16:42, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

Good luck this time round, PresN, although you should be aware that FLC is very slow and quiet at the moment, with just not enough active reviewers to guarantee good lists have enough of a consensus to pass. Hopefully when I close your Nom this time round, it will be to promote! – SchroCat (talk) 09:23, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

This is my first DYK review. Please let me know if I did this right: Template:Did you know nominations/Kawasaki Ninja H2. Thanks, --Pine 21:01, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

  • Pine, a couple things: first, you're not supposed to promote the article to the preps immediately. A third editor will take care of that. Second, you need to explicitly state what you checked (i.e. "Length is alright, there are enough references" etc.) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:04, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Noted. It looks like everyone is moving on with the view that that nomination is OK, but I will make use of this information for my future DYK reviews. Thanks. --Pine 06:57, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Good evening, Crisco. Now I'm working on the article mentioned above, and I have stuck on a sentence "Western motives, played in the native environment with specifically Sundanese decor". I don't know any Dutch, but via Google Translate tool, "Western motives" may refer to the script. In the Indonesian version, the word "decor"is corresponded by the word "suasana", which may interpreted as atmosphere - According to an online dictionary, the word "decor" can mean by the stage setup. (My friend also try to translate this by this definition; the word is not contained in my vintage Anglo-Chinese dictionary.) That is contradictory. Can you clarify what is the real meaning of the sentence? Much thanks,

Bonus judge, Judge Martin Howard by John Singleton Copley

(P.S. Hope you will not be annoyed as I always have to find an advice from you - my Indonesian proficiency is very poor. I wonder if it's better to change the platform of discussion to Facebook - this is my FB site.)--Spring Roll Conan ( Talk · Contributions ) 10:19, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

  • (talk page stalker) Might be "motifs" -Aldus een geheel naar Westersche motieven opgezet… where motieven can apparently be translated as such, but a cursory reading of the article suggests it might actually be motives, motifs being a bit abstract for a plot revolving around emotions. Crisco, I wish you a happy halloween, but I feel sorry that the specialist we encountered last time have complained that the Chinese version is not even qualified to appear in the DYK column. Though in zhwp DYK standard doesn't require a close link of each paragraph with the topic, he put down his comment that the paragraph "Legacy" is totally off-topic, and he belittle the value of this article as a FA, which sounds exhausting. Maybe I should change the paragraph's name in the Chinese version as "Consequences" etc., or do nothing - when one of my colleagues have done what I'm doing, the expert doesn't even come out to oppose - the structure is merely the same. That's double standard, right? You don't need to reply, I just want you to know what happens. --Spring Roll Conan ( Talk · Contributions ) 17:28, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

  • Meh. All of the sources available that are PD have already been put online (or, at least, those I've found), and if this "specialist" can write worth a damn, s/he is welcome to have a shot. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:21, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Christmas POTD

How about the Christmas Truce for Christmas or a day either side, presuming it passes? =) It's going to be a long time until the next big-number anniversary.

And, yes, I have been trying to fill major anniversaries of late. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 14:58, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

Sounds ideal! Though I have the vague idea I have a Christmas or New Years' image in the queue already. Probably thinking of Auld Lang Syne. Adam Cuerden (talk) 15:35, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

Queue 3 understrength, and special occasion hook would fit very nicely

Crisco, Queue 3 is down to six hooks—Fram just removed one—and it just so happens that the October 29 entry under special occasions (Locus iste) is perfect for that queue. It does mean that the hook should be given full scrutiny, promoted directly to queue, but if it hasn't been done when you see this, I hope you'll take a look. Many thanks. Hi Crisco, as always I come to you as my expert about copyright/licences! Are you up for a discussion of his railroad photos? Many are held by the Denver Public Library and they don't offer any type of PD license for them. Some time ago, there was quite a heated discussion about whether the photos had to go because of not being PD; we still have quite a few in areas where so far there's been no PD photo to replace them.

Perry was a real train buff; those who take rail photos as a hobby often swap photos they've taken with others, and he was no exception. The hobbyists most often had/have their photos printed on postcard forms and use some kind of ink stamp for their ID. I found this recently and spent some time online at DPL trying to match it; wasn't successful, so this is an Otto Perry photo that is not part of the DPL holdings. From the ink stamp and the postcard stamp box, this was taken during the time frame Perry listed and is his work. Bottom line--can we think about using this and others as PD since we can see the card back and so on? In the case of possible DPL duplicates, I'd think having the back of the card would be enough proof that the photo didn't come from DPL without permission. Thanks! We hope (talk) 13:48, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

  • For those which were definitely published (like this post card), I'd expect it to be PD in the US for lack of a notice. Duplicates from the DPL are still the same image, and so they don't have a new or separate copyright (assuming they are duplicates, of course) and can thus be used. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:55, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
You don't know how many of these I've passed by because I was afraid of a) stirring up the old issue and b} running afoul of DPL's policies. Well, no more! :) Thanks! We hope (talk) 14:01, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

Crisco, I've been asked to "opine" on this nomination, but it's in an area I don't feel comfortable opining, dealing with a ghost-written autobiography's claims, many improbable or likely enhanced. The old "merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative" approach, apparently, but on steroids (and before there were steroids). If you're willing, I'll let you read the arguments (the positions are clear from the most recent icon, I think) and weigh in. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:17, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

Crisco, I was hoping you could please take a look at this one and perhaps get it moving again. I can't, because I proposed an ALT hook; my idea of an interesting hook and the nominator's seem to differ by quite a bit. At any rate, you'll note the possible issue with my wording, since I don't have access to a key offline source, and much of the article is based on newspaper stories or ads, which makes any attempt at an article narrative quite difficult. I'll let you decide where it stands and what to do. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:33, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Request edit

Hey, do you think I can borrow you for a minute to take a look at this very small request edit asking that a couple sentences be added to keep the page up to date? user:Guy Macon just did a few of my request edits and I realized this one slipped my mind - it's been in the queue for 6 weeks.

Also as an FYI for the McKinsey page, user:FreeRangeFrog seemed to be suggesting here that I might be better off putting together a GA-ready copy/pasteable draft than handling things piecemeal. I explained that many of the corresponding edits may be controversial, but did put together an annotated draft here with all the remaining edits I think would be needed to make it GAN-ready (once reviewed I can remove the annotations to make it copy/pasteable).

Regarding images, I was pretty impressed with the results of the photoshoot I did of various Purina dog food products, but they decided to try to get their own professional photography approved for Creative Commons. (I thought mine were better :-p) CorporateM (Talk) 16:12, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

I find it to be a lot easier to work with a completed draft, rather than piecemeal changes, even if some of the changes are controversial. I carefully go over the page checking references and looking for bias, edit any problem areas I find (usually not a problem with user:CorporateM's work), and publish it. Quick and easy. --Guy Macon (talk) 21:25, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Thank you

Hey Crisco_1492, thank you so much for nominating my shot of the Long-billed curlew at Drakes Beach for featured picture. It was not an easy shot: after leaving our home very early, I spent quite some time at the beach finding good subjects. Then, almost two hours later and with the first groups of day trippers arriving at the beach, I came across this curlew. Now, shooting at a beach means you really need to get low and probably will get wet… (see my blog post that features this image). And someone on the ground making funny moves attracts dogs… Well, let's just assume, I'm lucky that I got this shot ;-) So, thanks again for picking and nominating it. This means a lot to me. --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 00:18, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

  • A pleasure, really, Frank. Strangely enough, North American birds are underrepresented at FP, so if you have any more that you think have a chance, feel free to nominate (or point me in the right direction ). Adam: Perhaps the Signpost could use a bit about the challenges of bird photography? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:33, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
@Crisco 1492, wow, that's interesting. I didn't even know that. I'm living in Strawberry, which is close to Richardson Bay, an Important Bird Area, and also close to Point Reyes National Seashore. That, and the fact that I find wildlife photography more challenging than other areas brought me to photographing birds for Wikipedia. Due to my current job, I didn't have as much free time recently. However, I promise you that I will keep shooting :-) --01:21, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

  • Thank you so much :)
About your uploads, to be frank, am not a supporter of cropped images of a performance because I feel the crop will reduce the EV when it is coming in connection with the particular art form. In case of highlighting the artist, it can be a cropped IMO. Anyway, a very good collection I have seen here. I did not see the articles related with it but I will see and I will add if anything touching me.
I have 2-3 another POTD suggestions, I will add it here, if you don't mind but all are not very near dates.
Thank you so much once again.

  • Hi Cris,
I am not sure about the dance form but and are very nice to me. Bellus Delphina talk 16:01, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Thanks, Bellus. I was using a 100mm lens (the fastest one I've got), so even getting the dancers into frame was a bit of a challenge; had to stand something like 10 or 12m back and hold the camera up high to avoid getting the crowd in the images. File:17 Years of Sekar Jepun 2014-11-01 03.jpg is definitely going to be an FPC candidate in the near future, once I confirm that it is, indeed, legong. I'll have to ask my friend about the other one, the one with the man (only two male dancers during the whole performance, believe it or not); didn't catch the name.
Feel free to leave any suggestions you have here. Arundhati is already scheduled for her birthday, and we've got the Bharata Natyam dance scheduled as well. So long as there's at least a month or two between dance images, we should be fine (spacing them out is a good idea, because we only have a few). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 17:00, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
  • I am also searching for clicking various dance forms for making FP. I hope will come more from my side too.

Bellus Delphina talk 17:56, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

    • Excellent! Remember to reduce the exposure compensation a bit when shooting; that will allow faster shutter speeds, and thus hopefully less blur. If you check the EXIF information on the images I shot, they were at speeds such as 1/125 and 1/200 - more than enough to keep sharp even when the subjects were moving. The noise introduced in post when fixing the exposure comp is generally less than what you'd get by increasing the ISO. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:37, 2 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Sure, I'll try my level best to capture very sharp picture by increasing my Shutter Speed. Thanks fro the help once again.

Posters!

Shame it's cut off. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:05, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Not uploaded it as yet-am trying to work my way through the pre-1923 films and upload or change some non-PD licenses we have for them. Am also trying to grab as many pre-1923 posters as possible-even those with no articles (yet), but am trying to take care of the ones that have articles first. :) We hope (talk) 00:10, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Have also found a big bunch of post-1923 posters that are large enough to read the fine print at the bottom and see that they didn't copyright the poster. :) I feel sorry for Sfan00 because I think I've done at least 50 (or more) license changes fron non free to PD in the last few weeks. ;) We hope (talk) 00:17, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

I found three very good poster databases which aren't like movieposterdb-they allow you to download without paying or being a member. IMP Awards, Moviecovers in French, and Movie Poster Scan Archive. You can also find some good ones through Pinterest. I do check Doctor Macro at times, but am at the other three a lot more often. The poster looks great!!! We hope (talk) 00:56, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Will check that one out. The French site has a smaller file of the poster. Sometimes that's all that remains of the item--have seen some on eBay for big prices that look like they went to the front lines of one or two wars. :) We hope (talk) 01:09, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Next DYK queue short one hook

Crisco, on the off-chance that you pop in again before Queue 1 is promoted at 12:00 UTC, the queue only has six hooks in it, after Fram removed one because it the nomination was accidentally originally promoted into two preps at the same time. There are tons of hooks available in the prep sets, so if you could move one of them to Queue 1 that would be great, assuming someone hasn't actually done something about the similar request I've posted at WT:DYK. Hi Crisco 1492, Thanks for your notification regarding the Picture of Day as at 12/11/14. By the way, would you be able to change the user's name as Donald Y Tong? The last time I saw these paintings was in 2007 where they were hanging in the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute (where I attended art school in 1974-75), in Utica, NY, which is the owner. Sir Crisco_1492 Dr Sunil Kumar Verma never want to be famous as an individual as I know him since last 16 years or so. It is all about the 'Process' (as you have mentioned) i.e. the discovery that he made in 2001 with the name 'universal primer technology' that is worth notable on wiki. Would appreciate if you create an article on the same......and if possible edit the already existing pages on this such as DNA Barcoding with links to above material and possible the US patent 7141364 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Educationtemple (talkcontribs) 11:24, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

Sir Crisco_1492 just for curiosity - If Paul D N Hebert could be on Wiki for the discovery of DNA Barcoding that he did not do, or did after Sunil Kumar Verma as evident from the above facts (and you too agree that the process that he discovered is notable); why not Dr Sunil Kumar Verma be there? Sorry if I asked something wrong!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Educationtemple (talkcontribs) 11:43, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

  • I never said SK Verma could not be on Wikipedia. I said that the sources you gave were more related to the process he used than the person. If you don't think Hebert meets our notability guidelines, you can feel free to nominate the article for deletion. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:48, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

Sir Crisco_1492 - And the process he used was a significant discovery done by him 14 years ago that has changed the way world investigate wildlife crime and test the authenticity of food! All the sources I gave cite his name as inventor of this significant process. It may qualify the un deletion of his page on wiki which may just state that " Dr Sunil Kumar Verma is known for the discovery of Universal primer Technology for Wildlife Identification (2001) (references to the above) which is also known as 'DNA Barcoding' (with reference to the link to GOI India Press Information Bureau site) as named by Hebert et al in 2003 (with a link to Heberts page). If you permit, I can create this page simply with the above lines. --Educationtemple (talk) 13:08, 9 November 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Educationtemple (talkcontribs) 12:01, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

I would just wanted to point out that he is a recipient of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research(CSIR)Technology Award in Life Sciences (see page 11 here in this official newsletter) which is one of the top technology Award of CSIR, Societal Innovation Award of National Research Development Corporation (see this link) which is another National Honour for Science and Technology in India and BioAsia Innovation Award (this link), a highly prestigious Award of Asia Continent apart from other Honours such as Research Ambassadorship of DAAD (Germany) etc. I Guess notability on WP:ANYBIO is adequately met as a part of WikiProject India. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.123.162.111 (talk) 18:11, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

Awaiting your reply Dr @ Crisco_1492 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Educationtemple (talkcontribs) 09:54, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

I provided you other information after that on the awards etc of SK Verma. I am sure you have seen them. These are prestigious awards and only few Indians have got them. Together, I assume that the notability criteria WP:ANYBIO could be met and the profile of SK Verma could be recreated along with a specific page of Universal Primer Technology invented by him in 2001. If you agree to this, I can do both (i) recreate small biography of S K verma (ii) create a Dedicated page on Universal Primer Technology. Hope you can take a decision on these and give your recommendations specifically @ Crisco_1492 . — Preceding unsigned comment added by Educationtemple (talkcontribs) 13:08, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

Sir, Crisco_1492 please don't be angry. I am also trying to help and contribute for the wiki community like your kind self. If you can not take decision about undeletion of S K Verma's biography, I shall take it to review with your permission. Hey Crisco. It seems I made a pretty significant error in the Beneful article. The New York Times says their revenue was $141.7 million over four weeks ending September 29, 2012, whereas I made it sound like this number was annual revenue. Unfortunately I have not found any updated sources with an annual revenue number (Nestle doesn't break it down in their annual reports either) to correct it. Taking 141.7 in one month and multiplying by 12 months = closer to $1.7 billion in revenues.

I was wondering how you think we should handle it? We could just delete it, use WP:CACL to say "about" or "more than" a certain number or maybe something else I haven't thought of. I also have sources that call them a "billionaire brand" (ie more than $1 billion in annual revenue). CorporateM (Talk) 22:34, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

  • I'd probably use WP:CALC to indicate "more than 1.5 billion" (though that's still somewhat debatable, as there can be significant changes over a year, though probably not for dog food). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:16, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Hey, you're an active, accomplished user who seems to have done a lot of reviews. I was wondering if you'd be able to give a review to Tony Hawk's Underground, an FAC that the delegates say they'd rather not pass without feedback from editors uninvolved with video game articles. Arbcom

Hi, would you please consider suddenly deciding to run for arbcom, and then hurriedly submitting a candidacy? Candidacies go to Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2014/Candidates within the next 48 hours or so. But you can refine it after that.

I ask this because (1) you would almost certainly be elected, (2) you would do a good job if elected, (3) you are capable of dealing with the rather onerous position, (4) you might help to broaden viewpoints at the "top" of the Wikipedia hierarchy while in the role, since you have a much more global outlook than the average candidate.

I understand if you say no. I think it's worth a try! --Demiurge1000 (talk) 23:15, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

  • Thanks for contacting me. Sadly, I'm not too sure I could handle it, as my on-wiki time has been limited as of late, and some of those cases get to be extremely involved (which would mean almost every other form of contribution might have to stop). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:38, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

Pah Wongso Pendekar Boediman - sources review

I tried to do as you asked, but unfortunately there is a gremlin in my system at the moment, which means that my laptop crashes every time I try to make an internal link. This is making review work (and much else) difficult if not impossible at the moment. I don't know how long this will last, but I think you'd be advised to find another reviewer for his task. So sorry. Brianboulton (talk) 21:23, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

I wouldn't mind so much, except there's A - no valid reason for deletion - a small amount of humourous content is, after all, allowed. B. I don't know where my copy is.

Hell, it was actually in use on the page about not needing pictures of your dick as one of the jokes. But, no, humour has no place, and we will ignore all rules to destroy it. Adam Cuerden (talk) 04:35, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Screw it, if I find it, I'm using it in the Signpost. I'll start a contest, but remind people that everything used has to be free-licensed. Adam Cuerden (talk) 04:37, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Hello Crisco 1492. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).

Would like your input

Hi Crisco! If you can spare the time and are interested, I would like to invite you to review and comment on the Spokane, Washington FAC. You are a seasoned editor and reviewer and your input and critical eye would be very appreciated. The FAC hasnt received any new input in a week since one of the other reviewers is busy or sidetracked at the moment so I wanted to see if I could take this time to get other people to comment on it. Lately Ive been occupying myself on minor issues since I cant think of anything else that can be done to improve it. The nomination has 2 supports at the moment.

So, if you have the time, we would love to have you :) Thank you for all you do around here.G755648 (talk) 04:28, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

Closed discussion

We had a discussion to enhance The Fourteen Infallibles up to the featured level. Unfortunately you closed the discussion while editors were still dealing with the suggestions and mentioned problems.I think this discussion needs to be reopened. Mhhossein (talk) 11:46, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

  • Consensus was that it was not up to FL quality. I recommend that you have a native speaker of English help you with a peer review before nominating again. Furthermore, it was already at the end of its run. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:55, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
@Crisco 1492: Where did you reach the Consensus? The peer review request had no result! No one participated the discussion. After the nomination, it took almost two month for the first one to participate the nomination discussion! So, it would be better if we let the discussion continue. Next nominations will take longer times. Mhhossein (talk) 16:16, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
  • You should get a better understanding of the featured lists process. Firstly, the peer review has no bearing on the FLC candidacy. Second, most nominations are considered stale by the time they reach two months of age. Even if there had been no reviews, the nomination would have been archived. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 16:58, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
I know that the FLC candidacy is not related to the peer review, I just wanted to tell you that I was concerned with asking others to check the article before the nomination. How about ongoing discussions, why are they archived? Mhhossein (talk) 18:47, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
  • If they reach a certain age, and there has been no or little discussion, and there are one or more oppose !votes still standing, they are archived to give other lists a chance for review. This list was open for two months minus one week, had an outstanding oppose, and based on my overview of the list it could not be brought up to snuff within the remaining time. Hence the nomination was archived. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:53, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

Notifications for SVG FP candidates?

Hey, Crisco! I was wondering... Is there something I can set up somewhere to automatically notify me whenever an SVG file is put up for FP candidacy on the English Wikipedia? I don't want any to slip past me, but I don't always remember to check. KDS4444Talk 20:55, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

  • No, I'm not aware of any. Adam Cuerden is more technically minded; maybe he knows? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:47, 24 November 2014 (UTC)
    • @KDS4444: I think it'd either need to be something hard encoded into the FPC nomination protocol so as to ping you, or a bot. Neither is particularly simple. The simplest way might be to filter a transclusion of the FPC page onto your talk page using a variable to change functionality, and some #if statements, though en-wiki doesn't have the text manipulation extentions installed, so I need to check some things. I noticed your surprise that this article passed GAC. The review was actually performed by a user that has recently joined the wikiproject that collaborated to improve the article. The review was double checked as part of the GA Cup, however I do still have some reservations about the impartiality of the review. I think your concerns are well founded, and that perhaps it would be best to request a Wikipedia:Good article reassessment, to make sure it meets the GA criteria. --NickPenguin(contribs) 07:44, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

Just one thing

Wikistalking is not OK. Making two reviews on articles created by a user that you have an obvious issue with within a time span of 10 minutes at the moment is just very weird. I do agree with you on the reviews issues at hand but lets not take it to the level of Wikistalking. I am not shy of telling you what I think and I will take the issue futher if it should escalate. Thanks.--BabbaQ (talk) 15:19, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

  • Read WP:Wikistalking before you accuse me of doing so. This is an administrative matter, for which the following of edits is entirely appropriate, particularly as all are related to the same issue ("Correct use of an editor's history includes ... correcting related problems on multiple articles [or, in this case, pages]. In fact, such practices are recommended"). Your edits to DYK are consistently not up to standard, and thus a drain on community resources and a cause of both reviewer fatigue and backlog. I have requested that another editor attempt to mentor you, so that you can edit in a more constructive manner, and thus contribute in a way which is both enjoyable to you and not detrimental to the encyclopedia. If you wish to bring up the matter at an administrative board, I do recommend you read WP:BOOMERANG beforehand. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:28, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
I think you are absolutely ridiculous. And in fact you are more likely the one in need of mentoring concerning Reviews if your review of the Pettakare cave is anything to go after. That is my final comment. No more of this behaviour thanks. And I will certainly stop as well. This is a two way street.--BabbaQ (talk) 15:36, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
  • (stalking) @BabbaQ: I'm not the most experienced DYKer but I know enough to be dangerous, and having worked with Crisco on getting Denmark Street and Dartford Crossing to good article status, (and you'll note both of those GA reviews were about a week apart, yet I never claimed Crisco was stalking me!) I'm confident enough to say he knows his stuff. At the end of the day, if you put articles up through the formal review procedures (which DYK is), you must expect constructive criticism, take it in good stride and see how said criticism does (or, sometimes does not, but that comes with experience) help improve the article - which is, after all, what we're all here for. Incidentally, I checked Daniel Paris - now, there's nothing wrong with writing about popular culture, but you have to respect the biographies of living people guideline, which is taken very seriously, and I would recommend the sentence "He also has been the victim of cyberbullying..." is removed, as it is insufficiently sourced in my view. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:58, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
  • I do not have a problem with constructive criticism. That being "constructive criticism". I am not saying Crisco should not review. Basically I can not help that Crisco is feeling Butthurt about this situation. I have 40+ articles experience with DYKs and just right now I have articles with 40,000+ views on DYKSTATS. Crisco is being rude, am I better probably not. I will not apologize especially now that Crisco has taken it a step further with his latest antics at the DYK talk page. I am no wallflower when it comes to blatant attempts of discrediting me. If you give me obvious crap I will return the favour. Simple as that.--BabbaQ (talk) 16:03, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
  • I certainly wouldn't claim you're not a productive editor and you have made positive contributions to this place, that can be easily seen from your contributions. Personally, I like people to give me a different angle on things, as the more points that can be brought up, the more likely the article is going to appear better to the average reader. I am sympathetic to the complaint that clearing an article through DYK has got harder particularly over the past year, and I realise it can seem frustrating to have the experience you have and suddenly hit a brick wall. However, I am convinced that nobody has it in for you and are simply concerned about maintaining an excellent standard of quality on the main page. Furthermore, since Google Books is getting better year on year, and the WMF have arranged free subscriptions to online source services (I've signed up to JSTOR and BNA and they're brilliant), there's no real excuse for not going with a higher quality of source than a typical website which runs all the risk of becoming a dead link and unverifiable in a year's time. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:14, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
  • But even you must admit that there are a difference between having opinions and suggestions about someone elses DYKs, not like Crisco is doing trying to point finger at me as an unproductve and not professional DYK creator. That is a blatant lie basically. I like that you responded with actual suggestions instead of attacks as both me and Crisco has been guilty of today. I have for the record never claimed to be a brilliant editor overall, but I am a great DYK contributor and my track record from 2010 until present time shows that my articles overall have been liked and enjoyed at the DYK. Thanks.--BabbaQ (talk) 18:56, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Why do you keep referring to your track record? Does it mean you know better than someone with 626 DYKs since 2011, well over that in reviews, and whose top two hooks (four articles) had more than 50k hits. It's good to feel proud of your accomplishments, but recall that others may be just as accomplished (or even more so) than you.
I may have been a little harsher (I wouldn't even say "rude") than you like, but that does not change the fact that the article you nominated was woefully unprepared. I recommend listening to Ritchie here; if people find that you are responsive and willing to listen to feedback (no matter how it's phrased), they are likely to review your noms more quickly than if you withdraw everything immediately and accuse others of being "butthurt" and stalking you. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:57, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

Some baklava for you!

Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup or honey. Just remembered what a wonderful help you are for us all on the project! Hafspajen (talk) 19:04, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

Monkey photo

I added 2 cat's that can apply to the pic. I don't know if we can nominate for 2 at once but those were the most logical. talk→ WPPilot  02:36, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

Crisco, it occurred to me that you might want to know about Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Breakin' Dishes (2nd nomination), since you were the reviewer of its GAN back in 2011, and the fact that it is a GA is a factor in the discussions. Apologies for not letting you know sooner. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:14, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

Crisco, mohon bantu donk untuk mengembangkan artikel id:Pah Wongso Pendekar Boediman agar serupa dengan yang ada di en.wiki --What a joke (talk) 01:55, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

Crisco, I was wondering whether you could revisit this and see whether the POV issues have been dealt with to your satisfaction. I know that some of the text that Panyd objected to still exists, but the phrasing has been revised here and there. I rather doubt "leading ladies" is appropriate, for example, but if that's an isolated incident it can be fixed. Thanks for checking. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:24, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

Really? I heard folks talk about equipment's and stuff - but never realized that part. Hafspajen (talk) 04:03, 28 November 2014 (UTC).
  • Well, the 60D is almost $1000, and the 60D is almost twice that. The 5D mkIII is closer to $4000 than $3000... (actually, for my purposes the 6D may actually be better) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:18, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
Oh, woew. Hafspajen (talk) 04:36, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
More like this, actually... Hafspajen (talk) 15:57, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Yep, photography is a rewarding but not a cheap hobby, that's for sure... Where the rabbit hole goes, even I don't know. :-) Although Crisco, I think you're right that the 6D is probably better for your purposes if money is tight. Better to spend the difference on a good prime lens. The main differences are shooting speed and autofocus, neither of which are that important really. I'd have considered the 6D too if it were around at the time I bought my 5D Mk iii. Or, if you don't need the 6D's features, you could actually get a second hand 5D Mk ii which is almost as good as the Mk iii. Ðiliff «» (Talk) 08:56, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Oh, the geographic coordinates and whatnot would be useful. I'd definitely go with the 6D rather than a second-hand Mk II. As for the lens... well, 1.5k (the 5D mkIII is going for Rp. 35,000,000 right now) is a fair bit of wiggle room, though I'd probably end up getting a ring flash, the adapter, and a 50mm speed lens rather than just one lens. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:21, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

Hmm, I noticed the header 'I want this woman' and, as I'm just soooo modest, immediately thought "Oh, that must be me", so trotted all the way over here ... ... only to find you are all discussing camera lenses!
