cref2 et al.
Hi. Please see User talk:Mark Arsten#Ahalya 2, where we're talking about cref2/cnote2 and, uh, killing them off. I saw your comments at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2011 October 4#Template:Cref2 and it's unfortunate that that didn't close as delete. There are better ways of doing these things, starting with {{efn}}. These old templates need to be phased out in favour of better tools. There's a link on Mark's page over to a talk on Wehwalt's page where I talk more of this. I've been pretty busy shifting articles to using {{sfn}}, {{sfnm}} and {{efn}}. There are a few other poor ways I've seen explanatory notes done (raw html being the worst) and they should all be updated. A sticking point, for some, is that they want to use footnotes in explanatory notes. I think that inappropriate, the technical limitations aside (which would be WP:REFNEST). Using footnotes inside explanatory notes introduces an extra level of clicking to reach the actual cite (and yes, this is a complaint about {sfn}, but it has awesome advantages). The better approach is to use {{efn}} for the explanatory notes, using names to allow them to be reused and to be kept segregated down in their own section, and to refer to sources in the notes using {{harvnb}} and siblings. See Ahalya#Footnotes for a recent example. See also John Diefenbaker, Walking Liberty half dollar, or a fair number of other FAs I've fixed up. Alarbus (talk) 07:10, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
- Here's an example. SInce that wasn't using an refs within the notes it was straightforward. I would suggest that they be given better names than "A", "B", as those have no meaning and will get out of order if another is added anywhere but at the end. Since these are single-use, and translations, you might prefer to simply keep the note inline in the prose; e.g. {{efn|Original: "...'' Di dalam pesawat [...] saya tak berhenti-henti menangis.''"}}.
- In that edit I also changed ";" to proper bold markup (apostrophes). ";" is for the 'term' in definition lists and is not appropriate for introducing bulleted lists; see WP:LISTS#Description (definition, association) lists. It is a commonly misused bit of wiki syntax. Using third level section headings would be better but TOCs get out of hand easily. Alarbus (talk) 01:02, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
- tip: open preferences→Gadgets; under "Appearance", select "Display diffs with the new yellow/blue color scheme and design that improves accessibility." Much better. Alarbus (talk) 01:07, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Jablai
After seeing this edit, I did a google search for "Jablai", but thankfully no one was looking over my shoulder... I'm curious what the literal translation of that word is, I noticed on id.wiki it redirects to "Pelacuran". Mark Arsten (talk) 00:12, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
- Jablai is an abbreviation of jarang dibelai (rarely caressed, rarely pet). It gained currency after Titi Kamal released a song with the title, about a woman whose husband is never home and thus feels sexually frustrated. Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:17, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
- Huh, interesting. I'm impressed that you know so much about Indonesia. Mark Arsten (talk) 00:36, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
- Well, living here 5 years will do that to you; I actually enjoy singing the song at karaoke, as it is usually good for a laugh when a guy does it. BTW, the Grand Wizard article is really coming along! Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:38, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
- Apparently the song is from Mendadak Dangdut, which was released just before I came here. Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:41, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

- Nono Crisco, don't get me wrong. I have absolutely no concerns with your article or hook! But I did mention it as an example that content which has the potential to offend some groups hits the main page as I had a feeling somebody was going to use it as an example and ask me. Reason being I initially misread it as a "man in drag being "gender sabotage" against the sexual norms of the time!" Keep up the good work!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:32, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

DYK review help
Template:Did you know nominations/Tropical Storm Fran (1984) : Can you take a look at that? If he spent a year drafting it on his user space, that's fine but I'm just a bit confused as to what is going on there. --LauraHale (talk) 06:06, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
- Had edit conflict. :( Not on purpose. :( Sorry about that. :( --LauraHale (talk) 06:40, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
- No biggy, hence why I wrote ec :-) Just felt like I should let you know. Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:45, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. :) I was confused as I wasn't sure what was going on. I have about 20 to 60 articles I am nominally prepping for DYK on my user list that will be moves from user space. If I was completely misunderstanding expansion criteria, that would be :( and yeah. Anyway, thanks for stepping in and helping. --LauraHale (talk) 07:22, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
- It's quite a messed up history, so no wonder there were problems. That's why I don't history merge if I'm the only one who worked on the expansion. (I'm a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad boy) Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:26, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
- I think I will have about 12 articles where I need to history merge when I take to DYK. They might end up looking dated when history merging. :( I'm trying to get pictures from people before moving them over. I want pictures. :( --LauraHale (talk) 07:38, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
- I'd make a note so that reviewers know what to look out for. Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:27, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hint: When you start an article in user space, you can copy it to article space and ask for deletion of the user-space version. --Orlady (talk) 20:02, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
- My recall is the DYK checker says it was moved from the user space. And I can comment to say when it was moved. Not that worried but have considered that if the articles stay there for a month. --LauraHale (talk) 20:38, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
- Two days, a month, most people don't pay attention. Even with Prince Antasari I had to point out that it was moved, and that was only two days. Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:34, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
GLOBE at Night
Hi Crisco 1942,
I didn't intend for the hook to be "blatant advertising" for the project, I meant it more to be advertising for the wiki page. Clearly I'm excited about the project (although I am contributing, and encouraging friends to do the same, I am not officially involved with it in any way for what it's worth), but please believe that I was acting in good faith and trying to make a great hook for the Wiki page. Since Wikipedia is a crowdsourced project, I figured that pointing out the crowdsourced nature of GLOBE at Night would be a good way to do this. I wanted to get the article done early enough for this next round of the project, because clearly if it appears on DYK some of the people who click on it might participate. But life intervened, and I didn't get it done 5 days before the start of this current phase, and that's why I asked that it get posted ASAP. You can see my edit history of the development here, I started it back in January: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Anotherdoon/GaN_devel&action=history Note that I added the you after I put it onto the main wiki, when I was perhaps over excited about the page I had made. Originally I had always had the more neutral "the next opportunity to take part", which I think should be fine in the lede, no? It seemed to me like that's fairly relevant information, like "Tropical storm X is currently underway..."
Is it really short on citations? I thought a dozen references wasn't bad! Can you please suggest to me where you think it's most lacking, rather than generally not enough? The "reasons for concern" section doesn't have many, but I didn't really bother because the two "main pages" I linked to are extremely well cited.
I'm sorry, but I don't know how to remove the external links from the running text. In most cases those were supposed to be acting as citations to material on pages deeper than the official webpage of the organization. Is there some way to make them part of the "references"? I'm assuming that is what your objection was? (figured it out :-) Anotherdoon (talk) 21:26, 14 March 2012 (UTC)) Please bear with me here! Best wishes, Anotherdoon (talk) 16:20, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Do you want to put File:Goya Maja ubrana2.jpg and File:Goya Maja naga2.jpg side by side at the bottom? Would that work? Or would you rather have File:Petrus Christus - Portrait of a Young Woman - Google Art Project.jpg? Also, I'd like to get File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg in for variety, but then will the page seem too warlike? MathewTownsend (talk) 20:44, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
- Considering the orientation of the images, above each other would be better. I think including the map would be nice. We'll see about the portrait of the young girl; depends what other images we have (personally I like the movie poster) Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:54, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
- yeah, I do too. I was worried about nationalities, topics etc. to get variety, but in the end I go with the pics I like the best. FP and Rotten Tomatoes
- I'm 100% against adding extraneous promotional material to FPs to hype the images with info having nothing to do with the images. (It's on the level of dyk info and lowers the quality of the section.) We should discuss this with the managing editor, Skmo (whatever his name is). This is using FP to hype other stuff. Any info added should relate specifically to the image, IMO. MathewTownsend (talk) 13:33, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
- As I said to you in my answer on my talk page, I don't consider the write ups to FAs and FLs "finished". I just stuck them in to get them started, as I've been busy. I'm glad to see you adding to them. But please consider my objections to adding promotion of unvetted articles to "Featured content". MathewTownsend (talk) 14:51, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
