AFD lists

Hi, thank you for adding Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Paul Davidge to the various AFD lists. Tell me, please, should I have done that myself when I raised the AFD or is it an administrative function? If it is my responsibility then I apologise but I'm still on the learning curve here. It certainly seems to be a good way of advertising the presence of the AFD. Thanks very much. Ziggy (talk) 15:06, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

hi Ziggy (thanks for the thanks:)), anybody, including the nominator, can add an afd to a list, its not compulsory to do so but its nice to involve as many editors that may have an interest in the subject area especially as they may have expertise in that area and access to sources that we do not, usually one of the regulars, like myself, will add them to list(s) within a day or two, so there is nothing to worry about if you dont. ps. if there isnt an afd list for a subject a notification can be left on a wikiproject/workgroup talkpage ie. there isn't a specific list for darts players (although sportspeople list would be okay), so a note could be left on the darts wikiproject talkpage, btw, there is a subsection: "After nominating: Notify interested projects and editors" towards the bottom of WP:AFD that discusses this, all the best. Coolabahapple (talk) 15:48, 15 January 2018 (UTC)
Thank you, Coolabahapple, that's very useful. One more step up the learning curve, I think! By the way, I'm delighted to see that there is a project for cats and I should certainly think of joining it to see if I can learn something that will help me to provide better service for a certain member of our family Ziggy (talk) 16:04, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

A problem on the Patrick White (Australian novelist page)

Hi Coolabahapple. I noticed you recently edited this page, and thought you might perhaps have the expertise to correct the error which places the kindergarten "Sandtoft" on the North Shore in Woollahra. I know nothing whatsoever about this, except that if Woollahra is correct, then North Shore is not, while if North Shore is correct, then Woollahra is not. (I have no access to the reference and hence cannot fix the error.) If you can fix this, or know someone who can, that would be great. MargaretRDonald (talk) 02:41, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

hi MargaretRDonald, sorry but ive been crook the last few days and have been unable to wikianything, i see that others have corrected the error, writing about the problem on White's talkpage was a great idea, thanks heaps for improving WP:)) Coolabahapple (talk) 05:29, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Possible Advice

Hello! My name is Mary, and I am a college student in UC Berkeley learning to use Wikipedia. For our assignment, we were given the task of writing an article pertaining to Civic Technologies, and I chose to write about Phandeeyar - a company founded by David Madden. I saw that you made some edits to Madden's article and was wondering if you'd have the time to possibly look over my draft in my sandbox? I referenced him in my article, and I wanted to get some input about what I've written so far. It would be much appreciated.

Here is the hyperlink if you're interested in doing so! Mary Mijares (talk) 05:07, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

hi Mary_Mijares, i see that Phandeeyar is now "live", its a well referenced, nicely set out article, i have added a couple of projects to the talkpage and assessed it as a "start". Coolabahapple (talk) 23:33, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
I appreciate your response and help! I'll try to look at the other sources in the projects as guidelines for bettering my outline. Much thanks! Mary Mijares (talk) 08:42, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

"All ships are notable" and other unicorns

Greetings. Without much reason except perhaps time wasting I looked up you user page and came across your adventures in AfD-land. I was struck by the absurdity of the discussion in the AfD about Irlam (1813 ship), in particular the arguments advanced by Acad Ronin, certainly in good faith, where that editor (a) entirely rewrites the purpose of Wikipedia, in his pointillism reference, and then (b) asserts that "all ships are notable," which they aren't. Very funny and not a little sad. -The Gnome (talk) 16:52, 25 May 2018 (UTC)

Actually, the WP Project ships does view all ships over 100 tons (not defined) as intrinsically notable. As for the pointilism metaphor, if one is trying to learn about shipping in the 18h and 19th centuries, whaling, the trans Atlantic slave trade, the British East India Company's trade, convict transport to Australia, and the like, categories of vessels have to have content. Furthermore, there are many books that focus on roles, but only WP ship articles give one the opportunity to see the variety of trajectories as vessels moving between categories and roles as owners acted entrepreneurially in responding to different opportunities, etc. There is a lot to be said for not defining WP's role too restrictively. Acad Ronin (talk) 17:10, 25 May 2018 (UTC)
Well, practically by definition, any kind of project, and that includes WikiProjects, is bound to take an inordinate interest on its subject. The point is that what a WP might find notable (i.e. interesting), Wikipedia itself might not. And this is evident in Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, especially now that they've tightened up considerably as regards the creation of articles.
Don't take me wrong. I admire very much the scholarship and the dedication of practically every WikiProject. However, I've found that there's a tendency, a risk if you like, of a bias forming in WPs' participants, towards their subject, born out of affection. And, to come round to my original point, this is brought into relief especially in AfDs. As to Wikipedia's "role," I believe in its organic, continuous progress. There used to be very few rules; we now perforce have many more. That's because we need them on the basis of numbers alone. And we're doing rather well, I think. Take care. -The Gnome (talk) 18:47, 25 May 2018 (UTC)

thanks JarrahTree, i thought the afd was a funny one with lots of new editors/ips piling in, especially as the book concerned had only been released a couple of days before the article being made, but i remembered the support i received from some editors when i started editing WP, my afd comment reflected that, again thanks, i will continue to traverse the fascinating wikiregion that is afd:)) Coolabahapple (talk) 14:59, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

oz tags

Hey! Appreciate your work on the AUEnglish/dmy tags in oz articles and occasionally when I stumble over to AfD ;) Wondering if there were any tools or something you use(d) to distinguish Australian articles that didn't yet have those tags? Just thought if so, it might be useful for doing other things as well. Nat965 (talk) 09:00, 26 June 2018 (UTC)

hi Nat965, nope, i just choose an oz project from the table at the OZ 5000 challenge (i started with the smallest project, and am presently up to OZ law), bring up the project's article list, and open each article in edit mode to see if it has them and add them if appropriate/required. i am sure there would be an easier/quicker way to do this but i don't mind doing it:) Coolabahapple (talk) 15:36, 26 June 2018 (UTC)

Suggestions?

A trout for wikikitten.

*presents trout as requested* So, read your comment in the ongoing saga of DELETE EVERYTHING CRAYOLA. I think it's a little bit unfair for editors to hit me with WP:BLUDGEON when I'm trying to defend four separate articles (out of six) from deletion, mostly against the same editors raising the same points that don't actually apply, as well as a number of randoms raising policies that also don't apply. AfD's have to be decided on the basis of actual policies, not what people wish policies said. I realize that I could try to respond to several people's remarks in one reply, but that would take just as much space, and individual issues could get lost. But what's truly unfair is to take a debate that's died down for five days, reopen it with a flurry of policies that are being misapplied, and then use WP:BLUDGEON to suggest that I'm not allowed to respond. That's far more bludgeony than replying to individual comments, IMO. It takes four words to say, "this is all WP:OR", or five words to say, "there are no reliable sources", but it takes full paragraphs to demonstrate that it's not original research and that the sources are reliable. So precisely how am I supposed to defend an article from deletion when people cite policies that don't apply and get their facts wrong? Yesterday's debate was rekindled with the argument, "here are all the policies being violated, therefore this page must go. And you're not allowed to argue that I'm wrong because policy." I really think that's applying WP:BLUDGEON to prevent open and honest discussion, which isn't what it's for. P Aculeius (talk) 14:03, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

thanks (munch, munch:)) Coolabahapple (talk) 12:19, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

I wanted to drop by and say "Thanks" for adding my first discussion for deletion to some appropriate categories (here) and wanted to ask (for the sake of improving myself as an editor) how you did that? Is there a guide or tool you could reference me to?

Appreciate anything you can share. --Cheers! Elfabet (talk) 12:44, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

hi Elfabet, i went to the appropriate deletion sorting list (there is a category called "Wikipedia deletion sorting" that lists all of them), and added the afd, there are a number of wikiscripts some editors use to help in this, including User:Enterprisey/delsort, but i just do it manually. Rachel Parent

See you're an editor (I'm not an I don't care for WP much, TBH). I've added some data to the talk page that might help improve it a bit. Particularly that the narrative "schoolgirl does project, gets woke about GMO" is utter BS. Her daddy is in the industry and she's a player, not an activist. Maybe and even probably a puppet but that's not for me to say. I'm too close to the problem to be unbiased but the article needs review and revision, urgently! Merry Merry

Happy Christmas!
Hello Coolabahapple,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 18:34, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

thanx!:) Coolabahapple (talk) 05:54, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

Regarding a revision of Work in Essex County:

User: Sangdeboeuf has tagged consensus to keep but then soon after reverted to reinstate an edit you made which included a notice for deletion, without stating why. Checking with you before rolling the edit back as seems at the moment to be an error by User: Sangdeboeuf. Did you raise any objections or is there anything else I should be aware of before making the change? Mrspaceowl (talk) 19:48, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

hi Mrspaceowl, my only edit to the article was about the book winning the john denning prize (see here), as the article still mentions that i have no problems. Coolabahapple (talk) 23:56, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
Thank for the confirmation Coolabahapple. I'll give it a little while and then remove the deletion notice once it's clear there are no further objections to the article's existence. Mrspaceowl (talk) 18:16, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

maybe

[1] the conversation there about geography also goes where I might drift down the rabbit hole into eternity on the subject of adding cities to anything in the NT - see my edit [2] therein lies the rub and the nub of such things, I could wax, lyrically perhaps, on the subject - but hopefully the diffs provided offer sufficient entertainment - but then there is always beeswax and salt and surf etc. I could always be wrong in all of this, but as with the late douglas adams's preoccupation with improbability, and heisenberg with certainty - and its opposite- I shall say I I am a heisenbergian adams ite on the matter - JarrahTree 10:22, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

Project Tagging - Your help is needed

Thanks to Earwig and his bot some articles had our project banner placed on their pages - this will let us monitor and support these articles better. However, the tagging received some complaints about too many incorrectly place tags (see here). Some help in going through the categories to be used by the bot would be appreciated. That list of categories can be found at: User:The Earwig/Sandbox/Children's Lit

Article Alerts

A great way to stay on top of articles which need particular attention is through the project's article alerts page. You can find out about new Good Article Nominees, Articles for Deletion, and more. If you watch the page you can even see the new additions each night right frmo your watchlist.

There were no responses. Did you get answers elsewhere? It doesn't matter what Google says because this sounds like the kind of information that can be found in books, and if you can find it, that might be enough.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 20:57, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

just to let you know

I personally hate banner shells with a passion... just in case you need to know... In many cases it makes hard for a reader to see assessment issues without having to open things... assessment can also be missed when banners close things up... JarrahTree 08:10, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

uh oh, says coola, who has probably added a bannershell to around 1500 talkpages:)) Coolabahapple (talk) 08:57, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

hahaha the joke is on me - because I use the marvellous Rater for editing - just doing a flyby edit on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Time_for_Bed_(Fox_book) ahhh 2016 december seems so so long ago - when I apply Rater - some items actually get banners built aroundthem - the world moves in very mysterious ways at times. Article Assessment

With the completion of our project banner project, we have a large backlog of unassessed articles. Doing article rating is a great way to find interesting articles with-in our project's scope and to also find articles that were incorrectly tagged. This project will hopefully let us better monitor and aid in the development the many articles that this project supports. Thanks to Legoktm for all his work in making this happen.

Google Custom Search Engine

Looking for information on a book? Try out the new Children's literature custom search engine. This custom google search engine will look at designated sites for information. Included so far are Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, Horn Book, and Publisher's Weekly. If you have ideas for other sites which should be added start a discussion on our project talk page.

Awards in Red

MrLinkinPark333 recently pointed out that on some of our Top importance pages about Children's literature awards there are many redlinks. The three pages with these redlinks are Caldecott Medal, Newbery Medal, and Carnegie Medal (with 0 existing redlinks in the other top importance award article - Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award). As of this newsletter there are 222 redlinks in those three articles. How many can we as a project create over the next 6 weeks? Could we even do better and see if we could create any that earn a Did You Know or even get it up to Good Article status?

As always feel free to head on over to the project discussion page if you find yourself in need of any help as we work to turn these notable entries on some of our most important articles blue.

Gum Girl

While I take your point, take a look at the edit history of author's other books Cloud Boy (page as created [4], Pablo's Inferno (page when created [5]), and at author Rhode Montijo's page when first created: [6]. It looks to me like this midlist author logs in, creates newbie-looking pages for his books, himself, makes some other edits, and disappears. It's fairly harmless, I mean, it's not like he's editing to persuade readers that measles vaccines are dangerous. Just, I'm not as sure as you are that it's a naive user.E.M.Gregory (talk) 18:19, 19 June 2019 (UTC)

Showing notability for a book by quoting reviews in reliable sources is excellent. But please, excerpt them. Use as little of the original text as you can. See how I did it here ? DS (talk) 19:00, 13 July 2019 (UTC)

Change of Category name

Hi CA! I would like to change the title, which you created, of "Category:Australian seascape painters", (of which there is currently just the one member, Alfred Coleman (artist)) to "Category:Australian marine artists" for the following reasons:

1. To correspond with similar subs of "Category:Marine artists by country"

2. To encompass model ship sculptors, one of whom I'm working on at the moment.

OK by you ? Doug butler (talk) 22:17, 17 September 2019 (UTC)

ARGGGHHHH

The Australian project has a well developed Places project - there is no need to add cities unless you wish to change them all - https://tools.wmflabs.org/enwp10/cgi-bin/list2.fcgi?run=yes&projecta=Australian_places it would be much appreciated if you give it some thought, as if you do proceed in doing that, it negates the last 5 months of my tagging process  :) - any further discussion would be appreciated... JarrahTree 10:10, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

very sorry to come over like that - technically there is no harm done, the problem is the precedent thing - localities in places like NSW have a vast set of 'incomplete tags' - viz - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Unknown-importance_Australian_places_articles - and every now and then, on inspection there is the fun of finding the odd things in there :( JarrahTree 10:57, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:17, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry

This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well C. MarnetteD|Talk 04:15, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
