E-mail ping on moss lawns DYK

Would you be interested in putting moss lawns up for Did-you-know, Clovermoss? I think it would be a good one. If so, I will nominate, and write content if you like. Nomination needs to be done within a week of article creation, so I need to know if you want to do it soon, but the DYK process takes some time. HLHJ (talk) 04:16, 6 March 2020 (UTC)

@HLHJ: Maybe. Is there enough time left to do DYK? I have some time this evening that I could use to expand the article. You can do anything you'd like to improve it as well. Clovermoss (talk) 20:45, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
There is definitely time. Template talk:Did you know has the instructions; I'm sure there's more than enough material, and you could nominate it today (or I could; have you done DYK before?). I will go add some material to the article now. HLHJ (talk) 00:33, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
@HLHJ: I have done DYK once before [1] but it's been awhile so I'll have to familiarize myself with it again. Clovermoss (talk) 00:42, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
DYK noms need at least 1500 characters of prose. Currently, I have about 910. I can probably expand the article to that point before the 7-day deadline, but I need to do stuff like eat dinner first. Clovermoss (talk) 00:54, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
I've got more than 1500 characters written; don't stress and enjoy your dinner. HLHJ (talk) 01:12, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
My edit more than 5x expanded it, so we have another week to nominate it! Please feel free to remove or rearrange, I'm not sure the section structure is a good one. HLHJ (talk) 03:19, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
@HLHJ: Thank you. You're amazing! After dinner I fell asleep (I only meant to take a quick nap but now it's morning). It's already made my day to see this. Once again, thank you! Clovermoss (talk) 14:15, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
Oops. I realize I've let this slip; it should have been nominated some hours ago. We can probably still do it, or we can let it go. Not fashed either way. HLHJ (talk) 19:00, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
@HLHJ: I'm not too concerned either way, either. I think that if you want to do DYK, you should get the credit since you wrote most of the content. Clovermoss (talk) 19:03, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Multiple credits for a DYK are standard, so we'd both get credits. I was once given a co-credit on European pilchard just for adding some photos, and a definition of some of the terms used to market it! HLHJ (talk) 19:33, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
@HLHJ: Alright, but I'm not sure what I would choose as a hook. Maybe something like: did you know that a moss lawn can be used as living mulch? Maybe something about its waste usage in comparison to grass lawns, or being drought-resistant. Any ideas? Clovermoss (talk) 20:23, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
I could add a bit of content about some people weeding moss out of their grass lawns, while others weed grass out of their moss lawns; that might be hooky. Drought-resistance sounds good; only needing a fraction of the water inputs, say. "Mulch" might only be of interest to gardeners, but the same could be said of weeding. I rather like the moss that swallows conifer needles, but that could do with more content and I don't know how hooky it is. A reviewer can also suggest hooks. We are a bit late, so we should probably either nom right away and see if they will accept it, or just not worry about it. HLHJ (talk) 02:18, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
It seems we're both too indifferent to do it; it is a bit of a faff. Have a good weekend! HLHJ (talk) 02:57, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
@HLHJ: A bit late on my end, but I also wish you a good weekend! I've been pretty busy myself, as I went to a birthday party. I also learned some new words thanks to you and Wikitionary. Clovermoss (talk) 22:27, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

I think that you might like it, and if you're interested enough in it, you could write about it for next week's What's making you happy this week? and "On the bright side". CVUA

Hey Clovermoss, hope you're keeping well in all the current chaos? I wondered whether you were planning to go back and finish off that CVUA exam at some point? If it's just something you're not so interested in any more, it's really no problem - but if you're stuck on any of the questions, I'd be happy to give you a hint of which guideline page you might want to look at. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 18:44, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

@Girth Summit: I'm still interested! When I have the time, I've been spending it actually fighting vandalism instead of CVUA. I have been doing a lot else on-wiki as well. I'm not stuck, and I promise to take some time to look at it today. If I need help with anything, I'll be sure to ask. Thanks for checking in with me and for the offer to give me a hint if I need it. I appreciate the thoughfulness. I'm sorry for taking so long to get through all this. At least I have more time to do things with March Break being extended. Clovermoss (talk) 18:50, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
Clovermoss, no worries - I just wondered if your interest had drifted somewhat. Take your time, and keep up the good work! GirthSummit (blether) 19:09, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
@Girth Summit: This afternoon and evening was busier than I expected and I didn't get around to it. I'm going to go to sleep now. I did take some time to look at the remaining questions, but I don't think I'll be able to answer any until tomorrow. Clovermoss (talk) 05:56, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

It has been a real pleasure working with you these past few months - thank you for volunteering to help keep Wikipedia free of vandalism, and putting in so much work during the course. I think it may be time to get out the EotW Binocs and scout the horizon for some lucky candidates. The Queue is down to five which is more than healthy but a nice cushion is much more relaxing. Hope all is good with you and your family and friends. TRA! ―Buster7  15:58, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

Sharing My Thoughts In The Time Of Covid19

I started my search with a focus on editors working on articles about the virus. It's very difficult to pick one over another. Guest2625 popped up on my range finder. Low edit count but recent activity. I guess what I'm searching for is someone that is really stirring the "Coronavirus Article Stew" in various places and nominate them as a representative of all the other involved editors. Not that Guest is that editor...not sure...just Sharing My Thoughts In The Time Of Covid19... ―Buster7  16:41, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

Just now realized The Signpost: 29 March 2020 was a good source...but who do we pick????
  • Wikimedia community responds to COVID-19... The opening statement by Bri and Bluerasberry is what I have in mind. Maybe give the Award to the Project rather than an individual?
  • WikiProject COVID-19: A WikiProject Report

Buster7  16:51, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

Searching for Extraordinary contributors in extraordinary times, Any one of these would fit the bill! ―Buster7  16:58, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
In response to Buster7's request: unfortunately I don't have much to add; I can't remember reading any Wikipedia articles related to Covid-19, and I don't have a sense of how the collaborative editing process is faring. Although my personal preference has been to recognize specific people for specific actions, as this provides a better sense of accomplishment for the recipient, if there are a lot of unsung heroes under these specific circumstances, then a group award may be a good approach. We can all use encouragement during these difficult times! isaacl (talk) 21:58, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
It is such a strange time for all of us. Memorable in so many good/bad ways. I want to reach out in real life to everyone that's doing their part to get us through this nightmare. Not able to do that so I turn to WP and the Eddy Award. Anyway, there are five weeks of nominees in the Queue so there is no rush. I'm gonna take a pass on an award today...on Easter Sunday. Best to you both. ―Buster7  07:21, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi Buster7 and isaacl. There are a lot of individiduals active at WP:COVID-19 that you might want to consider. There's also a few people that stand out to me in particular, if you're interested. The Signpost list is another good idea. Yes, it is such a strange time for us all! I'm in grade 12, so there's the disappointment of missing the last few months of high school, the assemblies, prom, the grad ceremonies, etc. I hope certain things will be delayed into whenever we can have them (even if it's next year) instead of just cancelled, but we haven't heard much about anything yet. What I do know is that the school closure date has been extended again, more information will be given by the Minister of Education soon, and I'll still be able to graduate. So many other people are dealing with so much right now. Greiving families, parents taking care of their children, people who have lost their jobs, everyone staying at home to try to flatten the curve, and countless other difficult situations. Clovermoss (talk) 17:33, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi Clovermoss, I hope everything that's really important to you gets to happen eventually for you. But for the rest of your life this will be a reference point, one of those strange times when the world was so different. I was a child during the 1973 oil shock and the three day week, so I know to keep a few candles in the house and that the veneer of normality is thinner than most people realise. Stay safe, good to see you around when you have time to be here. ϢereSpielChequers 08:50, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Editor of the Week : nominations needed!

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up a citation.

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:50, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

recruiting for a research project

Hi Clovermoss,

I’m a graduate student researcher undertaking a study on how women learn to participate in Wikipedia community and factors that enable them to persist as contributors. I’m currently seeking individuals who self-identify as women and actively participate in Wikipedia authorship, and you seem to fit this criteria. I'm asking potential participants to sit down with me for an hour long Zoom, Skype, or phone call. Would you be interested in interviewing for this project? Thank you for considering. Hello, Clovermoss! Here is the February 2021 issue of TheWikiWizard. Pilot Project, trying a smaller and different style newsletter

Wikipedia News

Humour

THESE STATEMENTS ARE NOT TRUE/NOT GOOD ADVICE. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE POLICIES THAT WIKIPEDIA HAS. EVERYTHING LISTED HERE IN THIS SECTION IS SOLELY FOR THE PURPOSE OF HUMOUR

  • If you have a COI, and you don't want to declare it, don't! (For all we know, a dog could be writing [or rather typing] this statement ;) )

Notes

  • We have a new editor on our team! Berrely will be joining the TWW team as a proofreader starting from the next issue onwards! (No more typos now...)
  • The Wikipedia Ads section will be omitted, to make the flow of this newsletter easier. Discuss this issue here

Hello, Clovermoss! Here is the March 2021 issue of TheWikiWizard.

Wikipedia News

Humour

This section was written by User:Canadian Otaku, I hope you enjoy it as much as I (Tsugaru) did!

  • If you edit Wikipedia around 1-5 AM, beware, as any admin could block you for being up too late!
  • It's really easy to break Wikipedia, just click here.
  • Ignore people telling you to stop putting "Hrrnngg,,,beans" on the article Bean (film), they don't know what good edits are.
  • Jimbo is god, and can do anything he wants to!

Notes

  • There are 2 new editors now, one of them Berrely, and CanadianOtaku. As mentioned Berrely is our new proofreader (typos beware) and Canadian Otaku is now going to be writing our Humor sections, I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for joining us, and remember, if you want to join, just let me know!

The Wikimedia LGBTQ+ User Group is holding online working days in May. As a member of WikiProject LGBT studies, editing on LGBTQ+ issues or if you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, come help us set goals, develop our organisation and structures, consider how to respond to issues faced by Queer editors, and plan for the next 12 months.

We will be meeting online for 3 half-days, 14–16 May at 1400–1730 UTC. While our working language is English, we are looking to accommodate users who would prefer to participate in other languages, including translation facilities.
