WikiCup 2015: The results

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to United States Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

A full list of our award winners are:

We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2016 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

Bot automation at Wikipedia:Today's articles for improvement

Greetings WikiProject TAFI members!

Over the past two weeks, there has been extensive discussion on introducing bot automation to assist with maintenance of the Today's Articles for Improvement project. A bot has now been approved for trial and will carry out the weekly duties. The bots first run will occur around 00:00, 22 November 2015 (UTC) (midnight on Sunday).

If you have been assisting any of the weekly maintenance tasks, please refrain from doing so this week. The bot needs to be tested and proven it can do the job, and it only gets one chance per week. The tasks will include:

Updating the accomplishments and archiving selections is still done manually, along with daily tasks such as adding approved entries to the articles for improvement page. These will become automated in the near future.

We hope the bot proves to serve well, and by carrying out the routine housekeeping tasks we can boost the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the project. MusikBot thanks you for your service in helping with the weekly tasks in the past, and for your cooperation during this trial period :)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Simpsons

The Simpsons episode list didn't show the latest season's table, instead it had a link to the season page so i simply copied the table from that page and pasted it where it belonged. People use that page to see all the episodes in one place — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.146.32.207 (talk) 06:59, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

It did show the table for Season 27 as you can see in this revision. Perhaps you were unable to see the list in edit mode. That's because we use templates (such as {{:The Simpsons (season 27)}}) to fetch tables from other articles. -- Chamith (talk) 07:28, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

BlueStacks Article Revision Reverted

Hi ChamithN!

Yesterday, we released a major product update - BlueStacks 2. My name is John Gargiulo and I run Business Development and Marketing at BlueStacks. I added the line

"On December 3, 2015, the company released BlueStacks 2.[8] The new version allows users to run multiple android applications at the same time in a simplified, browser-like interface. The company also added a toolbar with quick access to key, user-requested features."

This was the biggest product update we've ever had (from 1 to 2) and we felt it was worth noting the change on Wiki, especially since there was so much 3rd party coverage around it to reference. Here is some of it: https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&gl=us&tbm=nws&authuser=0&q=bluestacks&oq=bluestacks&gs_l=news-cc.3..43j0l9j43i53.693.1406.0.1669.10.8.0.0.0.0.165.770.5j3.8.0...0.0...1ac.1.b717m980ZTo . We also updated the product image to reflect the new version.

We saw that you reverted these updates. You are the boss of course but we humbly ask you to revert back to the revision or let us know what we can do better.

Thanks, John

@JohnnotJon: Hi John, first of all I'm not the "boss". I don't own any article here. Secondly, I had to remove the image you added because it shows Crossy Road open in the background which is copyrighted by Yodo1. And also this says you are the copyright holder of the image, however, your image upload doesn't provide enough license information to prove that you indeed have the rights to use/distribute the image. If you want to upload an image under fair usage you might want to read this. -- Chamith (talk) 05:06, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

So, I've got him watchlisted to keep an eye on him from some previous warnings. But what in the world was wrong with him adding the word songwriter to the Selena Gomez article? She co-written two songs thus far for her and her band, therefore, I personally see no problem with the addition. CrashUnderride 14:05, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi Crash Underride, I had to remove it because of multiple disputes across multiple articles about this whole songwriter thing. You can see them here, here, here, here and here. Some claim she can be considered as a "singer and songwriter" but not "singer-songwriter" while some claim it's neither. According to the latter, co-writing two or three of their singles doesn't make them "songwriters" (professionally). So, obviously there is an ongoing conflict when attributing to these terms. I'm not against mentioning her as a songwriter but I'd rather see it with a citation so to prevent it from leading to more heated arguments. -- Chamith (talk) 15:04, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Thanks for your reply! Actually there is no conflict of interest as I don't work there so I will actually be very objective. It makes for an interesting wider discussion though. When don't conflict of interests exists? Everyone has things they like don't like. Actors, Countries, TV shows, cars, shoes, Politicians, and the like. This can seep into our editing. But I will take your advice and the advice of the article wizard on board. I will create the page and when I'm done, I will ping you to have a look.

In any event, thanks for being so helpful :)

It is now up - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Wendygreen11/Safe-T I actually was being super cautious and deleted alot of the original text I had. Maybe I was being overly cautious. Maybe I could send it to you and you decide which of it can be included. Wendygreen11 (talk) 17:22, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

The page has already been deleted :( Wendygreen11 (talk) 17:50, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

Provided rationale for deletion is copyright infringement and advertising. As WP:COPYPASTE states, you cannot copy paste text from external sources to Wikipedia, even if you intend to change the text. You have to write the article in your own words and you must provide reliable sources along with your additions. Like I said you have to avoid using a promotional tone when contributing to Wikipedia. For example, you have to be cautious when using words like this. You could give it another try by creating the article as a sandbox project. -- Chamith (talk) 18:27, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

I agree with you and the editor 100% It wasn't ready. I will make sure it's significantly better the next time round. Thanks for being such a good teacher and mentor. One day, I hope to be as good as you :) Wendygreen11 (talk) 18:42, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

If you would like to have a look, the new one is up :) Wendygreen11 (talk) 11:34, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

Wendygreen11, your article looks fine to me. Notability wouldn't be an issue here given that it's reliably cited. However,
  • It'd be better if you could mention what kind of company it is in the opening sentence. For example, if you'd consider Gartner, it says "Gartner, Inc. is an American marketing, market research and advisory firm providing information technology related insight headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, United States".
  • Citation goes after punctuation, not before. It should be like this, The company was founded in 2013 by Amir Mizhar with $5M round A from a strategic investor in the cyber and homeland security space.[1]
  • Try to wikilink Gartner, FICO, Microsoft Partner, Airwatch, ECI, and MobileIron to their main articles.
I don't see any apparent issues other than these, although, other editors might. Content-wise, article definitely needs some improvement as it may sound too technical for some readers. -- Chamith (talk) 04:01, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
@ChamithN: Thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate. I will make those tweaks as suggested by you. My main concern was just getting it up and I spent a long long time editing it. Now I will tweak it ie add categories, etc. You've really inspired me to follow in your footsteps! What is the journey to becoming an editor? Wendygreen11 (talk) 06:04, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
You already are an editor, or "Wikipedian". But if you meant that you want to know how to be an experienced editor then you have to know your way around Mediawiki and Wikipedia policies. This is something you can attain by frequently editing and participating in discussions. Maintaining a friendly relationship with other Wikipedians will also come in handy. Or, if you need someone to train you then you could simply ask someone to adopt you. -- Chamith (talk) 11:47, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

5 centimeters per second - timeline

The third part of the movie takes place on 2008, despite what the reference #6 says you can see the dates on Takaki's whiteboard (minute 48:50), Risa's message (minute 52:44) and the magazine (minute 55:30).

After you reverse the changes I searched a bit for official sources but couldn't find any from one date or another, beside the one already cited. However I guess that what is shown in the very movie should have some weight, don´t you think? :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 167.61.58.225 (talk) 05:51, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

I just checked the timestamp you mentioned and you were right. It says "March 2008" on his whiteboard, which I failed to notice when I was watching the movie. You have a keen eye for detail. As it's shown in the movie itself, it definitely can be used as a primary source. I'll change it back to your version with slight alterations for clarity's sake. Thank you for notifying me about this. --ChamithN (talk) 06:45, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
Rather thank you for take care of Wikipedia's quality, I'm just a passerby :)
By the way, I was thinking about to add a line pointing out that all the places shown and named in the movie are actually real, and depicted in full detail (from street scenes to the trains stations to buildings interiors). If that is ok, do you think that this and/or this could work as sources? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 167.61.58.225 (talk) 07:06, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
Sure, go for it. Usually blogs aren't considered reliable sources. But I think we can take it for granted as you can attribute Google Maps as a credible source for locations. -- ChamithN (talk) 08:00, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

2016 GA Cup

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016 GA Cup

Greetings, all!

We would like to announce the start of the 3rd GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been two GA Cups; both were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 500 nominations listed and about 450 articles waiting to be reviewed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time.

The 3rd GA Cup will begin on March 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on July 31, 2016), but this may change based on participant numbers. There will be slight changes to the scoring system, based upon feedback we've received in the months since GA Cup #2. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same. We're also looking to spice up the competition a bit by running parallel competitions. Finally, there's a possibility of assisting a WikiProject Good Articles backlog drive in the last three weeks of February, before our competition. Please stay tuned for more information as we get it.

Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on February 20, 2015. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the judges.

Cheers from 3family6, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar and MrWooHoo.
