Hey Brighterorange, I'm writing to see if you might have another look at the AFD for P-1000 here. I posted a comment there about my failure to find reliable sources describing the P-1000. Image problem on "Albright Special" page?

[edit]

Isn't there a problem with the instructional diagram and the photograph on the stub page for the Albright Special knot (bend)? In an Albright tied correctly (for fishing with monofilament line, anyway), it's important that the tag end and standing part of the light line exit from the same side of the bight in the heavier line. This is not true in the photograph Albright_Special.jpg. It is also not true in the the two middle steps illustrated in Albright_Special_Diagram.jpg, which cannot follow from the first step nor lead to the final step (the first and last steps are correct). (Forgive my ineptness; I've never contributed to Wikipedia before now in any way. I just curiously searched for this knot because it's one I use routinely for fishing.)

Next WikiProject Punctuation

[edit]

Hi, Was wondering when you are pulling the next dump off for the Project Punctuation?

Im thinking, that after the articles have been punctuated, i may run AWB over them with RETF to catch other spellings....

Wonder if there is a way to get AWB to look for missing '.'...

I will enquire

  • I don't have any specific plans. Perhaps September again? I've been thinking of doing a round to look for em dashes and en dashes that could be rendered better. But there are a lot of these. Maybe it would be good to integrate with some kind of automated editing process... — brighterorange (talk) 14:22, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"en dash"

[edit]

Hello - I just noticed your edit to the Bob O'Connor article, about inserting "en dash".

I saw what the edit did. Can you explain to me what that actually does, or what effect it has, versus the actual "-" character? I'm just curious...an opportunity to learn something new. Thanks! NickBurns 21:12, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I used to use the html entities exclusively, but I actually think that the unicode characters '–' and '—' are the better way to go because they look better while editing. They're available in the edittools box below the save page button. I don't have a bot for it; I think that there are too many false positive scenarios for it to be totally automatic. However I have been working on a script that can do most of the work with a little human oversight. It's at User:brighterorange/punctuation.js. If you want to try it out, let me know so I can write some documentation. — brighterorange (talk)
  • The script works well on these pages. I did up to and including Illinois. — brighterorange (talk) 18:25, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I reverted your auto edits over at 3D Monster Maze since in things like "1234-05" yyyy-mm dates it is not a range of numbers, so endash is inappropriate; moreover, this way it is inconsistent with the neighbouring "1234-05-67" yyyy-mm-dd style dates. Please adjust your script... --BACbKA 13:05, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I don't know why I did that. Thank you. — brighterorange (talk) 16:42, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bohr Atom: SVG vs PNG

[edit]

Hello, I saw that you replaced a PNG with an SVG. Something is wrong, in the process of displaying that picture. Could you revert your change, until the process is fixed? Also, I am working on an article that has some illustrations, and I have spent a good deal of time learning SVG and building my illustrations; seeing what happened to your illustration, disturbs me. Who do we talk to about this?

For your reference (and for forwarding to whoever is in charge), here is what I see, five hours after your change, using both Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer from a Microsoft Windows machine.

Viewing the page Mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics, I see the frame for the Bohr atomic model illustration, but that frame is empty.

When I right-click on the empty area and select "Properties", I see that Explorer and Firefox are both trying to show me this file: "http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a5/Bohr_atom_model_English.svg/180px-Bohr_atom_model_English.svg.png".

When I left-click on the empty area, I go to a page titled "Image:Bohr atom model English.svg". That page shows a faint checkerboard pattern in Firefox, and a blank white area in Explorer. When I left-click on the name of the graphic file (below the empty display of same), in either browser, I go to this file (which displays properly in both browsers): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a5/Bohr_atom_model_English.svg

--Swwright 22:45, 12 February 2007 (UTC)Talk[reply]

  • Yeah, I have seen this problem a few times. I'd like to help fix it, but I expect it's something only the developers can do (probably having to do with a race condition in SVG conversion). Sometimes the images just don't get generated correctly and then they are stuck as completely transparent images; doing an ?action=purge on the image page seems to often fix it. I purged the cache and it seems to be okay now in the atomic theory article. — brighterorange (talk) 23:12, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes resizing the image also fixes the problem. TimVickers 17:55, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My vote is for image #10. All of these images are lovely, so I can be exremely picky: 1 is a very good shot, but the composition could be improved (the lights in the corners are particularly distracting). 2's composition is perfect, but the image uploaded is very low resolution, and has a currently hip ultrasharpened HDRish look to it that will look very 2000s in a decade or two. 3 is a great animation, but I suspect it will also not age well, and there's something uncomfortably discontinuous about the motion. 4 is an apropos and unintrusive use of animation, but the image quality is actually not that good (low resolution, aliased font, aliasing at edges of moon); I think it also misleadingly suggests that it is actual photographs of the moon. The long exposure of 5 makes it appear blurry at large sizes. The composition of 6 is awesome but the image quality and contrast are only "good". 7 is a perfectly great wildlife photo, but is sort of obvious. Similarly with 8, except that foreground branches are additionally a bit distracting. 9 is wonderful in every way, and would win my favorite photo of the group, but its usefulness in an encyclopedia is limited. 11 is a great encyclopedic capture of a difficult to photograph event; really nothing to criticize about it at all except that the subject is a little mundane. 10 is high quality, and outstanding in its capture of something encyclopedic that would otherwise be basically impossible to see, so it is my pick. Thumbs up all around! — brighterorange (talk) 17:47, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I reverted your edit to 1 − 2 + 3 − 4 + · · ·, which has the summary "auto 10 en dash". Besides introducing en dashes, your edit replaced some .png links with .svg links and it even replaced a working picture with a non-existing link. I noticed that you were the person who made the "Kleenex Girl Wonder" page a redirect to Kleenexgirlwonder. The band is more commonly known by the former--this is how they format the name on their website, it's how it appears on most albums, it's how allmusic has it--so I'm curious about why you put the redirect in place and if you'd consider changing it back. Zach White article marked for speedy deletion

[edit]

The article for Zach White wasn't made by him, it was made by a fan of his. He was an important gay rights activist in the community and a CBS made for tv movie is going to be made about his struggle in central Ohio pretty soon. Please leave it up, his page is recent deaths was also deleted as soon as it was put up, and no one can figure out why. He did everyone in B.C. and the rest of the world a favor, his story just needs to be heard, as it has been in most parts of Ohio.

en dashes

  • It's not a bot, it's a client-side script, but it does automates the process with a little oversight from the user. (There are lots of things that cause false positives, so I don't think there's much hope for full automation.) I hope to make it available for wider use as part of [[WP:.|project punctuation]] soon. Tulane shield/badjpg

[edit]

I continue to by mystified as to why if we can only display something at low resolution under fair use that we would want to use .svg rather than .jpg. Asking Tulane University to publish its trademarks as vector files for free distribution seems a bit presumptuous. --Dystopos 14:34, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I don't see why you say "free distribution"? The logo would still be protected under trademark and copyright. I believe it's preferable to use SVG even for fair use logos because it allows us to prepare our articles for print as well as be future-proof against increasing screen resolutions. In this particular case, though, a bitmap image in a lossless format like PNG would be far better than the JPEG, which shows visible artifacts in the solid color areas. That's the real problem and the reason for the {{BadJPEG}} tag. — brighterorange (talk) 15:50, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pittsburgh neighborhood maps

[edit]

Thanks for your work adding maps—colorful and stylish ones at that!—to the Pittsburgh neighborhood articles. Bravo.Rudowsky 17:37, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My pleasure! There are still many more articles in need of the infoboxes, if you want to help. It's easy: the census PDF has the population and area information, Google Maps or Google Earth has the coordinates, and commons:category:Locator maps of Pittsburgh neighborhoods has all of the locator images. Lots of articles are in need of photographs. — brighterorange (talk) 17:50, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

endash help needed at Plymouth Colony

[edit]

The article Plymouth Colony needs the page numbers in the refs converted to endashes. It is a current FAC: [2] and that's about the only unresolved issue. SandyGeorgia said you can run a script to help out with that. Could ya? I would MOST appreciate it. Thanks! --Jayron32|talk|contribs 04:14, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Apostrophes

[edit]

Just so you know, an apostrophe "s" is supposed to be included in the link per the MOS. See here. Thanks for fixing my dashes in Mary: A Fiction! Awadewit | talk 15:02, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes, strange that Mediawiki's link extension code doesn't work in that case. I had already switched it back when I saw that it didn't match the others in the same article. FWIW, I'm all for consistency but given this I have to disagree with the MOS when it says that that it makes the source easier to read... — brighterorange (talk) 15:11, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Perhaps you could fix the code? I've often found that problem annoying. I actually agree with the MOS in this case; I find it odd to have all of these little "'s" hanging off links. Since the "'s" is part of the word, it seems like it should be part of the link to me. Personal aesthetic response. :) Awadewit | talk 15:23, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think it looks a little better too, but it certainly makes the source more complicated. My guess is that this isn't implemented because the apostrophe character is special in wiki syntax, but there's no fundamental reason why it couldn't work (as far as I can tell). Unfortunately I think that getting changes like this integrated into mediawiki and then into wikipedia is a very arduous project, or I'd take a stab at it... — brighterorange (talk) 15:27, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Brighterorange,

I noticed that you contributed to the Kearny High School page, so I wanted to ask you a question about the article. Someone is saying that the link Kearny High School Soccer is inadmissible. I'm not sure if he is correct or not. Can you see the link and his post here? [3] Your input will be appreciated. --Creashin 03:59, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I replied on the talk page. I basically don't have a strong opinion on this (I think my edits to the page were typographical in nature, as usual). — brighterorange (talk) 12:58, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for replying. I don't have super strong feelings on it either, but it seems that the guy who does is somewhat of a stalker. And I liked your thoughts on whether or not it would improve the article and I think the answer is obviously "yes". --Creashin 02:44, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Super Mario RPG lists

[edit]

Currently, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars has two lists pertaining to it (List of characters in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and List of locations in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars). User:TTN decided it would be best to merge the lists into the main article and split Smithy Gang into those articles. I recently merged Smithy Gang into the list of chatacters by removing the non-notable characters, and I have asserted that a cameo section in the list of characters is valid, per Wikipedia:Trivia sections and Wikipedia:Handling trivia that uses Alex Trebek#Cameos as a good example. I have suggested that we rename the articles per Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting potentially controversial moves to something along the lines of Characters of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and World of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars or Mushroom Kingdom (Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars) just like Characters of Final Fantasy VIII and World of Final Fantasy VI or Gaia (Final Fantasy VII). I believe if these articles are to evolve beyond a non-notable list, they should be renamed. For example, List of Final Fantasy VII locations was merged into Gaia (Final Fantasy VII), because a World article is notable, but a simple list of locations is not. That is why there are other secions of the article to make it a World article. It simply has not been renamed yet.

TTN believes the citations in the development and reception sections of the list of locations, books and magazines, are trivial sources. When I added that the 3D perspective of the game is reminicent of Equinox to the main article, TTN removed it since my souce was "the opinions of the Nintendo Power player's guide writers". Although it was actually Nintendo Power magazine, I do believe a magazine is a reliable source, and I gave a page from Next Generation Magazine which also said the same thing. In addition, I was surprized that TTN said that it was from the players guide, since he claims to own the players guide for the game. He has not verified this, since I asked him for citations in May, "Could you look in the back of the Player's Guide and tell me what “types” of … Magic? I forgot what they call it in the game … well, anyways, what types of Special Attack or whatever it is (actually, could you find out what it's called?) there are? I remember some vaguely when I owned the guide like “Fire”, “Jump”, “Electricity?”, etc. Could you provide a citation, like the page number with a quote in context?" TTN replied that he was going to "get to it" (User talk:TTN/Archive 5#List of locations in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars). TTN claims the player's guide is "at the bottom of a box that's behind at least five others in a cramped space". Seeing that TTN did not recognize that the page was not from the player's guide when I provided a scan of the page in question from Nintendo Power shocked me. However, I have continued to assume good faith by not questioning TTN's honesty.

Per Wikipedia:Consensus#Consensus can change, I have offered five different reasonable, temporary compromises that might integrate my idea with TTN's.

  1. Go over the list of characters so we can delete non–notable characters
  2. Rename the articles by following the steps at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting potentially controversial moves.
  3. Cut down the geography section list of locations by cutting it into the regional maps the adventures use when traveling from one to another. I can get pictures and write the fair use rationals, and someone can cut down the text that has no citation and does not allude to other media.
  4. Write the concept and creation and reception sections for the list of characters
  5. Write the concept and creation section for the main article

TTN rejected my compromise because it still keeps the articles. I agreed I would consider a redirect, but Wikipedia:Article size does not allow that, since the list of locations is currently 82 KB long. Instead, I agreed to help cut down the geography section that is the bulk of the article, but TTN rejected that as well because TTN states, "I am not interested in working on the article in regards to improving it." and "get past this "having sources automatically means that this information is good" mentality." TTN states, "I don't think they have or will ever assert notability." I have replied with, "Wikipedia is not a crystal ball, so if you don't think the articles will ever assert notability, we cannot yet know this, per Wikipedia:Arguments to avoid in deletion discussions#I don't like it.

Would you please take a look at Talk:Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and give us your thoughts? Taric25 01:42, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you are deeply involved in converting US city/state single links to two different wikilinks. Why? Did I miss the memo? I would much rather see one link for San Francisco, California (for example) than two. Binksternet 06:13, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I don't disagree with your example above. What I'm referring to are your disambiguations that appear in articles such as USS Missouri (BB-63) where you change this:
"Armed as such, Missouri was formally recommissioned in San Francisco, California on 10 May 1986."
...to this:
"Armed as such, Missouri was formally recommissioned in San Francisco, California on 10 May 1986."
I see in Wikipedia:Manual of Style (links) that it's not good practice to put two links right next to each other where they appear at first glance to be one link. I hold that the single link to California doesn't add to the understanding of the subject in this example. Binksternet 13:56, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know what you're referring to; I'm making a comparison to other kinds of disambiguating titles. I think it looks better and is pretty common style on Wikipedia. — brighterorange (talk) 21:30, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Hi Tom, I was looking through the history of The Notorious B.I.G. article and I came across this edit of yours. I'm just curious to know why the <br> tag was converted to <br /> despite looking identical. Cheers. Spellcast 03:35, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The main point of that edit was to fix the spacing of the reference, but my script also automatically fixes the syntax of the <br> tag so that it is valid XHTML (in XHTML, a tag that has no matching closing tag, like <references />, must use this self-closing syntax). It doesn't affect the page rendering, so I only bother to make that change when there are real fixes to be made as well. I just noticed that MediaWiki now (?) renders a bare <br> tag as the XHTML-compliant <br />, so the point may be moot except for applications that try to parse the HTML contained within the Wiki source but that are somehow confused by invalid XML. Anyway, a minor thing but there you have it. — brighterorange (talk) 14:12, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen several other scripts that also convert to <br />. I know it's a minor issue but I trust you know what you're doing. In the future, I will use <br />. Thanks for clearing that up! Spellcast 07:44, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

City-state changes

[edit]

Hi,

What's the rationale for these edits? We shouldn't be taking unambiguous links like Nashville, Tennessee and splitting them into two separate links unless there's reason to believe that both city and state are particularly relevant to the article. In most cases the state is just there to provide context. Is there some guideline on this that I'm missing? Chris Cunningham 08:31, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is mistaken IMO. The disambiguation is for the benefit of readers, not for the benefit of making the link point to the correct location. It ensures that readers know which Nashville is being discussed, and if they've never heard of Nashville it gives them an appropriate frame of reference. What's definitely not right is splitting these links up, which results in run-on links where the second part is only tangentially related to the article (and thus doesn't really need a link). I'm going to reverse these changes in future unless there's reason to believe that the two-link version adds clarity to an article. Chris Cunningham 08:28, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you can revert if you want, but this is pretty common style. I don't understand when you say that disambiguation is for the benefit of readers; in an article we generally link to disambiguated pages using only the base name for that article and hide the disambiguation part. That's why the pipe trick exists, and works for comma as well as parentheses. There's also the (usually substed) {{city-state}} template that does the same thing. Are you objecting just to the fact that Tennessee is linked in Nashville, Tennessee? Otherwise, I don't understand. — brighterorange (talk) 14:22, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You had this argument already at #City, State single links converted to two links. The point is as follows:
  1. Nashville, Tennessee links to the correct Nashville. Per WP:MOSLINKS#Content, it is better to link a whole phrase which provides context than just to a fragment if the current version goes to the right place.
  2. In most cases, the reason for linking to Nashville, Tennessee or Sacramento, California is not as an attempt to avoid redirects; it's an attempt to provide a bit of context.
  3. "Tennessee" isn't important. So it shouldn't be linked unless, per WP:MOSLINKS#Form, it would avoid having to pipe things. In the case of Nashville, Tennessee, we're basically just wasting pipes.
  4. "It's common on Wikipedia" is just a rephrasing of WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS where the reason it's common isn't through deliberate effort. This is the first time I've seen this style being used deliberately (I've never come across {{city-state}}, but suffice to say I disagree with it), and like the user above who questioned you on it I don't believe it's useful or necessary.
Chris Cunningham 14:52, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In regard to (4) I think in a stylistic argument it is reasonable to refer to style used elsewhere in the encyclopedia as evidence that the style is acceptable. WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is an essay about deletion, not style! I don't deny that there are some people that disagree (when aren't there?) but there are also people that agree. Look a bit and you'll see it all over the place. Take the lead sentence of University of Western Ontario, for instance; it links to London, Ontario, not London, Ontario. Do you think that's wrong?
For (3) I suppose it depends on context whether the state is important, but I don't have anything against "Nashville, Tennessee." We do generally link place names, though. What does it mean to be "wasting pipes"?
In response to (1) I don't believe WP:MOSLINKS#Content is relevant because Nashville, Tennessee is disambiguation, not a phrase. It is not the name of the city. The reasoning is the same as for other disambiguations like Georgia (U.S. State).
Finally, let me mention that the reason I prefer doing this is not just semantic but aesthetic: commas look terrible in links because they intersect the underline. — brighterorange (talk) 16:07, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS might be directly concerning deletion requests, but it's very commonly linked to to at least convey the meaning; that Wikipedia is really rather huge, and therefore it'll almost always be possible to find an existing example of whatever thing people are trying to dissuade a user from doing. In the UWO article, yes I think it's wrong, and had I the desire to add even more random pages to my watchlist I'd go and correct it right now.
"wasting pipes" was just a cute way of saying that "Nashville, Tennessee" uses up an extra dozen bytes on Wikipedia for absolutely no benefit to a single soul.
And "Nashville, Tennessee" is not "disambiguation" in the Wikipedia sense (well, it is, but that's an altogether different kind of thing); it's clarification in the normal manner of introductory prose for subjects that the reader may not be intimately familiar with. If it isn't clear from the article that a link to Nashville definitely means "Nashville, Tennessee" without having to hover over the link, it absolutely should be "disambiguated" in the article prose.
Finally, the aesthetic thing: monoBook has underlining links turned off by default. Approximately everyone on Wikipedia uses the default monoBook appearance. We should be optimising for approximately everyone by default. Chris Cunningham 18:36, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(for what it's worth, that's UWO cleaned up :) ) Chris Cunningham 18:39, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're right about monobook; I almost always look at the site logged in. I agree that since underlined links are the default the aesthetic issue is not important. I think you and I differ on what the purpose of disambiguation is, but that means I don't find your argument very persuasive. Essentially, I think that we should not let the arbitrary naming conventions of Wikipedia articles infect the prose of the articles that link to them. I'm particularly surprised that you think the UWO article was in error. There are loads of articles that use this style, particularly in the lead. Regarding your change (and the consequent de-linking of Ontario), how could it be the case that both London and Canada are "important" in that first paragraph, but not Ontario? — brighterorange (talk) 01:23, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think Canada is notable in this case because the sentence in which it is linked specifically draws a comparison to the rest of Canada's universities. As for "infecting the prose", I don't think this is the case at all. I think it's pretty conventional to refer to London, Ontario instead of London, Canada, and the article prose definitely needs to point out that it's not London, England, but it's fairly arbitary. I would refer to my currently location as Linlithgow, Scotland in articles normally, even though Linlithgow isn't a disambig page - I may go for Linlithgow, West Lothian if I were editing an article with a uniquely Scottish context. In any case, I don't generally think that any part of the location is assumed to be notable (and hence worth linking to as a matter of course) except the town or city. But I'd generally provide at least some clarification in the prose. Chris Cunningham 10:00, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just a note to say I've put this up for FA review, though I should point out that the problems are not huge - it just needs a little more clarification for laymen, because the concept, while fascinating, isn't as hard to understand as we're making it. Basically I had stopped doing the wikipedia thing because I got tired of babysitting Peter Ekman (the notorious groper of eXile infamy).

But this article for LAHS had atrophied so much that I was kind of offended after all the work I put into creating it. Apparently LAHS is most notable for the rate it graduates Wikipedia vandals. I saw that you got rid of some of that, btw, so thanks. Anyway I went back and fixed it up. I know you're busy with the PhD and everything but when you get a chance maybe you could advise me how I could take the horribly pixelated LAHS logo and turn it into a smooth vector graphic. Also if you know a page that has some pointers on how best to insert graphics into pages without messing up the layout, that would be sweet. When you get the time. Ubiquitous dash-bot request

Hello, I was recommended to you (or rather your bot was) by Awadewit, so I must be in good company. :) If you have the time, could you run the bot for Emily Dickinson? It's just passed GA and I was hoping to take it to Peer Review and FA sometime in the future. I'm afraid her punctuation is rather heavy on the dashes, so if your bot threatens to crash because of this request, I completely understand your reason for not offering your services. :) Happy holidays! Endashes

[edit]

Hi. I have an article undergoing peer review with a view to achieving FA status. User:SandyGeorgia said you could run a programme to change hyphens to endashes in the notes. As I don't even know what that means I'd be extremely obliged if you would do it! The article is Reactive attachment disorder. Thanks again. Fainites barley 19:36, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The best thing about punctuation.js is you don't even need to know what it means! Cheers! — brighterorange (talk) 19:59, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SVGs?

[edit]

Hi Brighter

I was wondering if you could help at all? You flagged up at the FAC for Stocksbridge Park Steels F.C. that the graphs should be in SVG format, not JPG. I went ahead and created Image:NPLOneGates.svg, but it doesn't display correctly. It seems to have made it onto the server, as if you click on the empty space where it should be then the image opens, but it doesn't display within the page itself. Any idea what I've done wrong?

Cheers, ChrisTheDude (talk) 07:13, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is displaying now, but it looks like something's wrong. Did you auto-trace a bitmap image to produce this? That will produce bad results for line art like this. Also, it looks like the text is being stroked rather than filled, which makes it almost unreadable. — brighterorange (talk) 14:50, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia ML Master List

[edit]

A reference for ML - Master Lists was already provided. ML- Master Lists is a form of web-specific content - its content is distributed solely on Internet - and is grouped under the Wesites category.

Its notability is not temporary as the interest in the topic has been continual.

The Wikipedia article would be able to develop other sections, for instance the article on Tinyurl.com. The Wikipedia article does not describes the nature, appearance or services a website offers, it describes the ML - Master Lists concept and, according to the Wikipedia policies, is more up-to-date than most reference sources, incorporating new developments and facts as they are made known. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.93.8.231 (talk) 17:03, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but Wikipedia is not the right place to promote concepts like this. At a minimum, it must be written about by multiple independent sources before it can have an article. — brighterorange (talk) 17:18, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

En dash script?

[edit]

SandyGeorgia suggested on the FAC for Giant Otter that you have a script of some sort that takes care of missing en dashes in references. I ran it, but it didn't find any changes because it skips things like "457-8", insisting that the first number be smaller than the second. That's pretty common though, so I should fix it. Makeoutclub Wiki Entry

[edit]

Hello,

I am hoping for some help with the makeoutclub.com entry on Wikipedia. The initial entry I had made last September seemingly cleared the deletion hurdle and then it was expanded much more elaborately by wiki user drhamad. Since then, it has not only been edited heavily but now is marked as a contender for deletion and I can't figure out why. I am looking for assistance wherever I can find it within wikipedia to save the article from being deleted.

Please let me know if you could help to make sure this article doesn't leave.

Thank you very much. Exdeligate (talk) 19:52, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I might not be the best one to ask since I almost !voted to delete Makeoutclub, but I think some of the sources mentioned might barely cut it. But my advice is: Integrate any sources you know of, especially ones that focus exclusively on Makeoutclub, into the article. This is the best objective way for us to gauge notability, and for an article's curators to demonstrate it. — brighterorange (talk) 01:53, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Investment

[edit]

Dear Mr. Orange,

Greetings from Greg Comlish, one of the most internet famous of all Comlishes.

I am interested in starting a WikiProject on Investment. As you know, investment is both a rich and critical topic. Most critically, investment is a way to get rich. Har-Har. Astonishingly there is no such project out there devoted primarily to improving the many articles on investment. The closest I can find is economics which, as you know, is far too general.

Investment articles are in need of improvement! Please examine Exchange Traded Fund for instance to see what a tragedy of the commons we have gotten ourselves into.

At offset, I would venture to state that the goal of WikiProject Investment is to improve the usability of investment articles for investors while still adhering to encyclopediac standards. Of course investment is a topic with countless ideas: the marketplace of ideas is the very heart of capitalism! One of the critical challenges these articles face is giving salient examples of firms, funds, strategies or investment resources while maintaining NPOV and Notability. A series of standards and guidelines for these unique issues could benefit all of Wikidom.

I see that you have started a burgeoning WikiProject yourself. Could you point me in the direction of the appropriate next steps and spare a few words of advice on how to get my WikiProject going? Greg Comlish (talk) 21:38, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey brightorange! I thank you for your comment. I like contributing to Wikipedia. I thought it was a good idea to make regional artcles, but you guys though wanted to have the full list. About the full list, you can see all the games for the Wii in 3 major regions (NA, JP, EU). I believe I'll be okay now with the "Unreleased" date thing. It's not a complete list. Well, it was a interesting AfD discussion. Despite with the merge voting, I'm 1-1 in AfD nominations I've been challenged (with the keep result of the Check Mii Out Channel). Hi again, i noticed you've done a LOT of work with pictures. Over at the michael jackson project we DESTPERATELY need some free pictures. Is there any chance you can upload some if not all of these ABCDEFGHI onto a fair use rational. I havet the foggiest of a clue and as both the Michael Jackson and Thriller articles are approaching FA reviews we really need some. If you can manage it, a well deserved barnstar is in order. Realist2 (talk) 06:21, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr photos are not free unless they are marked as creative-commons licensed. None of these are, unfortunately. It's usually not okay to upload them under a fair use rationale, either, so you need to find some promotional shots or something on flickr that is CC-licensed. — brighterorange (talk) 22:17, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dashbot on WP:FAC?

[edit]

Just curious, but do you run your 'dashbot' on every WP:FAC article? You ran it on my article, and I thank you for it :) But in any case, if you did already run it on all WP:FAC articles, then I'd like to say thanks on behalf of the community (if it hasn't been said already, which I'm sure it has.) If you don't already do that, then I'd implore you to do so, because it'd do a great service and there aren't really that many WP:FACs going through every month :) Gary King (talk) 07:13, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome! I try to keep up with FAC, since this kind of micro polish makes the biggest difference for the highest quality articles. I did run it through all of the Featured Articles at some point. Unfortunately it is still a manual process, so it all depends on whether I can find the time to do it. I am glad it is appreciated! — brighterorange (talk) 13:52, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Could you run it through Alexander Hamilton? It appears as though there are a few date ranges there that needs a nice polish. Cheers! Gary King (talk) 19:45, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. Fixed! — brighterorange (talk) 21:50, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any chance that you will open source the script, similar to Peer Reviewer? Ideally, it'd be nice if someone could type in an article name and the script would automatically fix the article entered. Gary King (talk) 23:24, 19 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's on a user subpage user:brighterorange/punctuation.js so it's already GFDL. You can try using it, if you want. The intention is to make it more user-friendly and document it so that it's actually pleasant to use, but it will always need manual supervision because of its moderately high false positive rate. Still, in the hands of some conscientious editors it could make a difference... — brighterorange (talk) 00:05, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How do I use the script? I've added it to monobook, but don't see any button or link for it on the edit page. Gary King (talk) 00:34, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Add this to your monobook.js:
function addlilink(tabs, url, name, id, title, key){
    var na = document.createElement('a');
    na.href = url;
    na.appendChild(document.createTextNode(name));
    var li = document.createElement('li');
    if(id) li.id = id;
    li.appendChild(na);
    tabs.appendChild(li);
    if(id)
    {
        if(key && title)
        {
            ta[id] = [key, title];
        }
        else if(key)
        {
            ta[id] = [key, ''];
        }
        else if(title)
        {
            ta[id] = ['', title];
        }
    }
    // re-render the title and accesskeys from existing code in wikibits.js
    akeytt();
    return li;
}

function addTab(url, name, id, title, key){
    var tabs = document.getElementById('p-cactions').getElementsByTagName('ul')[0];
    return addlilink(tabs, url, name, id, title, key)
};

document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'
             + 'http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Brighterorange/punctuation.js'
             + '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>');
  • Make sure you super-reload your monobook page too, since caching problems abound with user Javascript.
  • To use it, click the 'punctuation' tab on an edit page. If it finds any problems, they will be listed in a series of excerpts (one per line), with the change highlighted in red. If the change is good, do nothing. If it's bad click it and it will be undone. Don't edit the page while you're using the script, since whenever you click on one of those it overwrites any changes in the edit box. (Sometimes an excerpt will suggest a different manual fix; just do those after you're done disabling any false positives.) The boxes at the top with ON/OFF/HIDE don't work, and there's no reason to do the "click this when done with changes." This is just because I haven't gotten around to finishing those yet.
  • Be careful, especially with dashes in URLs, links, or templates, since these can break the page. There's some attempt to detect problem cases automatically but there are thousands of different kinds of things that might happen. I welcome your suggestions for the to-do list, at least.
  • I've only tested this in Firefox, so it might not work correctly in Internet Explorer or Safari. Let me know if you notice anything strange. Thanks for trying it! — brighterorange (talk) 01:09, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Woot

[edit]

I used the script in Internet Explorer, and it worked perfectly. It did, however, try to make endashes in an ISSN and a DOI, which I assumed to be incorrect. Perhaps you could try to make the script detect and avoid certain template parameters like that. Hooray! --Cryptic C62 · Talk 22:58, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for trying it! Yes, there are many false positives. It does try to detect and avoid some of them and I should improve it more, but it is harder than it seems. You'll notice that it does at least color tokens like ISSN and ISBN so that you can spot them more easily. — brighterorange (talk) 22:09, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I ran it again on another article, and here are two things you might want to incorporate:

  • blah blah text[4].[5] should become blah blah text.[4][5]
  • text content yarg . should become text content yarg.

--Cryptic C62 · Talk 10:48, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Doesn't it already do the first thing? Or do you mean for something other than <ref> tags? Bad spacing around periods is already on the to-do list! =) — brighterorange (talk) 22:28, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Try running the script on this revision. Because of the horrible punctuation in the intro, the script produces some funky results. --Cryptic C62 · Talk 14:42, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I guess "on/off" still don't work with the script? :/ Gary King (talk) 01:22, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alexander Hamilton

[edit]

Please do not convert Weehawken, New Jersey into [[Weehawken, New Jersey]], [[New Jersey]]. One reason we use city, state is to make linking simple and intuitive; this is not helped by making five redundant links to New Jersey in one article. The minority of readers who are reading about Hamilton and need to know where New Jersey is will have to click first on Weehawken and then on the mention of New Jersey in its first line; this minor inconvenience is the price to avoid absurdity.

Please let me know if this is a misbehaving bot; and if so, do fix it. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 14:42, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your preference but I disagree. My reasoning is above. You're probably right that subsequent mentions of New Jersey would not also need to be linked, which is something I'll look into. By the way, did you really mean to revert all of my edits concurrent to that? What do you mean by MOScruft? The Featured Article folks frequently request me to perform these kinds of edits for articles that are under consideration for promotion; it's not like I'm some weird rogue editor. — brighterorange (talk) 23:14, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, actually. The distinction between a endash and a hyphen is a bugaboo of a few editors, one of the flaws which has made FA a thoroughly contemptible process. As long as we secure clarity, meddling with such matters should be discouraged. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 17:07, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wowza. — brighterorange (talk) 23:42, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I see you did a few moves of punctuation to be before footnotes; this is a harmless piece of consistency, and has occasionally supplied punctuation which was missing. These are genuine, if very minor, contributions, and I will try to remember to replace them unless you do first. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 01:39, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Orange, how are you? It escapes me why I can't get the planet people to fix their dashes before they come to FAC, but there's another one for you. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Primanti Bros. logo.svg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Primanti Bros. logo.svg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. More feedback

[edit]

I ran your lovely punctuation script again, and I noticed something you might want to tweak: As it stands, the script deletes extra spaces in front of commas. However, the script does not deal with extra spaces after punctuation. I've often seen two spaces after a period/comma, and I assumed the script would fix it. I was disappointed to find that I actually had to do something myself for once! --Cryptic C62 · Talk 21:23, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, double spaces don't change the way the page is rendered, so I don't propose any changes of that sort (I guess the exception is the <br /> change) because I think it would be too annoying. However, if there's a space before the comma it does normalize space after it to a single one while fixing it. For periods, a double space after a full-stop is considered correct by many people from the typewriter days (and people trained by those people), so that would be a bad thing to change. That said, it might make sense to do some overall whitespace normalization when the script is going to be making other changes anyway. It'd have to be careful not to change stuff like manually aligned tables—I'm thinking of whitespace at the end of a line, for example. — brighterorange (talk) 12:04, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

While using your script, I noticed a new problem, though I don't know if it's actually new or if I simply hadn't noticed it before. I ran the script on this revision of Helium then clicked on one of the endash suggestions (an ISSN) to turn it off. I clicked on it again to try to turn it back on, and it didn't work. I tried this with a few of the other suggestions just to check, and the same thing happened. Even wierder, I tried hitting the Punctuation tab again to try to reload the script, and it gave me a much shorter list of suggestions, some of which weren't on the original list. --Cryptic C62 · Talk 01:43, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Image:SuSE logo.svg

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Image:SuSE logo.svg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:SuSE logo.svg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Conflicting scripts

[edit]

Hi Brighter Orange. I had your User:Brighterorange/punctuation.js script installed in my monobook, and then I added Lightmouse's User:Lightmouse/monobook.js/script.js script. They both add a new tab when the edit window is open, and yours seems to always override Lightmouse's. Is there a way they can work side-by-side, or would both scripts have to be copy/pasted into one new script in order to get them to work. Thanks, Matthew Edwards (talk contribs  email) 22:15, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, both of the scripts should be able to add tabs independently, but they look like they're doing it using different mechanisms (I am calling addTab and Lightmouse is calling addPortletLink). Probably it's those two functions that are interfering, but I have no idea where they're defined or how they work. =( — brighterorange (talk) 03:15, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for the reply. I'll ask around if anyone knows how they work. If not I'll use my alt account for one of the scripts. Matthew Edwards (talk contribs  email) 07:41, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Punctuation script

[edit]

Hi BrighterOrange. I've been using the script and noticed that it changes [[Los Angeles, California]] to [[Los Angeles, California|]], [[California]] However, at the MOS talk page, this discussion and this one both seem to point towards [[Los Angeles, California]] due to WP:Overlinking.

Would you therefore be open to changing the script so that it changes [[Los Angeles, California|]], [[California]] to [[Los Angeles, California]] instead? Regards, Matthewedwards (talk contribs  email) 04:58, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I prefer the separate links personally (see the discussions above) but they are not universally popular (see the discussions above) and I don't want to rock the boat. So I've been planning on turning those off by default, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Usually there are not so many that clicking them off is easy. — brighterorange (talk) 20:23, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. SandyGeorgia tells me that you have a script that fixes dashes and hyphens, formatting them to the correct usages? I was wondering if you could perhaps take a look at the above, or let me know how I can use such a device myself. Would be greatly appreciated, thank you! SGGH speak! 12:48, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, did it! — brighterorange (talk) 20:23, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dash / hyphen request

[edit]

Hi Brighterorange, if you have the time, could you please run your dash / hyphen script on Hillsgrove Covered Bridge as it is going to FAC? Thanks in advance, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:05, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, but there were no fixes to be had. — brighterorange (talk) 02:37, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for checking - sorry to be slow in replying, I was looking for the edit to the article (which was not needed it turns out). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:57, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again for checking on hyphens and dashes - Hillsgrove Covered Bridge made featured article today!
Take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:13, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can I get a dash-tool run over this article at FAC? Thanks muchly! Ealdgyth - Talk 03:24, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Surely. — brighterorange (talk) 12:52, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gotcha! — brighterorange (talk) 21:56, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tom, sorry to be a pain, but could you run your script once more please? As a result of FAC comments I've made a few more edits and added more refs. Graham. Graham Colm Talk 14:49, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Brighterorange, Bob Dylan is currently undergoing FARC. SandyGeorgia commented [[6]]:

There are faulty dashes in the citations (Sounes, Down The Highway: The Life Of Bob Dylan, p.41-42) which User:Brighterorange will fix if you ask him to run his script.

Please can you run your script. (I don't fully understand this computer parlance but it sounds like we're making progress.) Many thanks Mick gold (talk) 17:16, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, did it! — brighterorange (talk) 03:23, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Orange, can you have a look at the strange citation method used in Joseph Barbera and let me know if your script can fix those page ranges? If so, you might also need to look at William Hanna. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 17:20, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, no prob. They're done. — brighterorange (talk) 03:23, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Time again for the dash script run prior to FAC! Thanks muchly! Ealdgyth - Talk 15:16, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did it. Sorry for the delay, I was traveling! — brighterorange (talk) 15:21, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Hi Brighterorange, just letting you know that your great image:Old book bindings.jpg is used on this website without any attribution. I doubt that the other pictures on the website are necessarily used any more legally... :o( ... so maybe you can include some general nice information about copyright? I was about to do it myself, but I guess it's more powerful and more likely to be accepted if it's done by the copyright holder. Let me know if you'd rather not pursue it yourself. Regards, Ibn Battuta (talk) 17:03, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aw, it's okay. Actually I'm usually happy to see people using my photos wherever they like (and that one is even available with more lenient permissions from my photography website), more than I am persnickety about copyright. Thanks for letting me know, though! — brighterorange (talk) 15:21, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

take care not to replace mdash on URLs

See [7], you replaced two hypens with a mdash on a Google Books links, thus broking it --Enric Naval (talk) 00:32, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
