[edit]Hello, can you lead me to the relevant SPI on this user? [1] I couldn't find it in the archives.. [2] Makeandtoss (talk) 14:22, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Makeandtoss: There is no filing for that specific account; I found and blocked it outside of SPI. --Blablubbs (talk) 15:11, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Makeandtoss: I'll respond to your e-mail here. As indicated in the block log, the block is based on checkuser data linking the account to Red Slapper. There is no requirement that checks and checkuser blocks be preceded by SPI filings. --Blablubbs (talk) 15:59, 9 July 2024 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2024
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2024).
- Following an RfC, there is a new criterion for speedy deletion: C4, which
applies to unused maintenance categories, such as empty dated maintenance categories for dates in the past
. - A request for comment is open to discuss whether Notability (species) should be adopted as a subject-specific notability guideline.
- Following a motion, remedies 5.1 and 5.2 of World War II and the history of Jews in Poland (the topic and interaction bans on My very best wishes, respectively) were repealed.
- Remedy 3C of the German war effort case ("Cinderella157 German history topic ban") was suspended for a period of six months.
- The arbitration case Historical Elections is currently open. Proposed decision is expected by 3 September 2024 for this case.
- Editors can now enter into good article review circles, an alternative for informal quid pro quo arrangements, to have a GAN reviewed in return for reviewing a different editor's nomination.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in September 2024 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles and redirects in the new pages feed. Currently, there is a backlog of over 13,900 articles and 26,200 redirects awaiting review. Sign up here to participate!

vanadalising act
[edit]people are delibertely adding afd to all new articles without properly reviewing. This is a new form of vandalism. Ustadeditor2011 (talk) 11:29, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
- No, Ustadeditor2011, that is not what is happening. Someone nominated the article for deletion based on a good faith concern that it doesn't meet our criteria for inclusion. If you disagree with them, you are free to express that at the AFD discussion, but you may not simply remove the discussion template, and you may not accuse other editors of vandalism without very good reason. --Blablubbs (talk) 11:36, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – October 2024
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2024).
- Administrator elections are a proposed new process for selecting administrators, offering an alternative to requests for adminship (RfA). The first trial election will take place in October 2024, with candidate sign-up from October 8 to 14, a discussion phase from October 22 to 24, and SecurePoll voting from October 25 to 31. For questions or to help out, please visit the talk page at Wikipedia talk:Administrator elections.
- Following a discussion, the speedy deletion reason "File pages without a corresponding file" has been moved from criterion G8 to F2. This does not change what can be speedily deleted.
- A request for comment is open to discuss whether there is a consensus to have an administrator recall process.
- The arbitration case Historical elections has been closed.
- An arbitration case regarding Backlash to diversity and inclusion has been opened.
- Editors are invited to nominate themselves to serve on the 2024 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission until 23:59 October 8, 2024 (UTC).
- If you are interested in stopping spammers, please put MediaWiki talk:Spam-whitelist and MediaWiki talk:Spam-blacklist on your watchlist, and help out when you can.

Invitation to participate in a research
[edit]Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,

Global block
[edit]Hello, I'm afraid the tech is quite beyond me but I have found myself globally blocked by you, despite having been an editor in good standing for some 17 years. Not complaining but is there anything you can do to remove the block? I've tried appealing but I have to copy and paste an inordinately lengthy appeal reference in order to verify the appeal and my IT system does not permit of such copying and pasting. I suppose the whole point may be to prevent the technically illiterate from editing Wikipedia, in which case it is serving its purpose… 45ossington (talk) 22:40, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, @45ossington. I'm sorry to hear you're facing issues with editing.
- Two notes for background:
- Your account is not, and has never been blocked. This means that whatever block you're running into is almost certainly related to the network ("IP range") you were trying to edit from, and was not targeted at you specifically.
- I am an administrator on the English Wikipedia only, so I can not impose global blocks; that's something only stewards can do. If the block message mentioned my regardless, it is likely that both a local and a global block were imposed.
- It is hard for me to help directly without knowing the block target (in all likelihood, the IP address or range you were trying to edit from). If you are unwilling to post this publicly (and sharing it on WP:UTRS is not an option because of technical issues), you could email it to me here. Once I know the target, I'd be more than happy to investigate. Before we go down that road: Were you attempting to edit while a VPN service (or similar "anonymiser") was active on your computer? If you were, you may be able to resolve the issue by turning off the service, clearing your browser's cookies, and waiting some time.
- Best, --Blablubbs (talk) 10:50, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Hello; thank you very much for taking the time and trouble to respond. In fact, my appeal appears to have been dealt with, despite my failure to verify it, and I have been told:
"Looking at our logs, it appears the IP address that you are editing from belongs to a proxy service. Open or anonymizing proxies, including VPNs, iCloud Private Relay, Tor, and web hosting services, are blocked from editing Wikipedia. While this may affect legitimate users, they are not the intended targets. No restrictions are placed on reading Wikipedia through an open or anonymous proxy. Although Wikipedia encourages anyone in the world to contribute, open proxies are often used abusively. MediaWiki, the wiki software that powers Wikipedia, depends on IP addresses for administrator intervention against abuse, especially by anonymous users. Open proxies allow malicious users to rapidly change IP addresses, causing continuous disruption that cannot be stopped by administrators. Several such attacks have occurred on Wikimedia projects, causing disruption and occupying administrators who would otherwise deal with other concerns. Unfortunately, you will not be able to edit while using this open proxy."
- I am not conscious of using a proxy service or VPN or web-hosting service on my ipad and I have no idea how to recognise such a thing, let alone how to remove it, or what the other consequences of removal might be. I therefore seem to be stuck. I appreciate that Wikipedia does not impose these general rules for fun. Do you know if it provides idiot-proof advice to the technologically challenged about the practical steps which have to be taken to regain access? 45ossington (talk) 12:01, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- @45ossington, if you're on an iPad and haven't consciously installed an anonymiser, the issue may be with iCloud Private Relay, which is a proxy service developed by Apple and shipped with iOS.
- I don't have any experience with it as an end user, but Apple's support website provides information on turning it on and off at https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/ipad/ipad49894edb/ipados . --Blablubbs (talk) 13:40, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you v much again; I'll try that. 45ossington (talk) 18:06, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

Quarry query
[edit]Hey there, Blablubbs,
So, here's my query, right here. I was trying to see how many CSD G13 page deletions I've done this year which are the bulk of my page deletions. But this query resulted in a severe undercount so I'm not sure what I did wrong with the code here. For a long time, I've been interested in getting a type breakdown of my page deletions from CSD to PRODs and AFDs although I don't think this query can discern PRODs and AFD deletions. What do you think? Liz Read! Talk! 02:35, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Liz -- The problem is the
log_namespace = 2
constraint, which limits the search to theUser:
namespace. This query should be more accurate (the "namespace" column takes "2" for userspace G13s, and "118" for draftspace G13s). I hope this helps? --Blablubbs (talk) 11:02, 5 November 2024 (UTC)- RE: Breakdown by type: Thst should be doable by checking the deletion summaries for various substrings; I don't know SQL well enough to do it efficiently in a quarry (though I imagine it's quite doable), but I'll grab a dump of all your deletions and see what I can do. --Blablubbs (talk) 12:23, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
@Liz: I ran some analyses on the data from this query. I classified these into belonging to different deletion processes by parsing the summaries, looking for (1) comments that match a CSD criterium (i.e. the letters G, U, A, F, R, C, X, or T, followed by one or two digits), (2) comments that match "PROD" or "proposed", (3) comments that match "AfD", "Articles for Deletion" or variants thereof (e.g. "articles_for_deletion"), and (4) comments that match a different deletion venue (RfD, TfD, MfD etc.). Here's a breakdown by process for the entire time period; I collapsed non-AfD discussion venues into a single category, and separated G8 from other CSDs since G8s are usually associated with some other deletion process:
Process | Count | Percentage |
---|---|---|
CSD (Other) | 317726 | 50.76% |
CSD G8 | 261613 | 41.79% |
PROD | 24098 | 3.85% |
AFD | 12519 | 2% |
Multiple processes mentioned | 4221 | 0.67% |
Other discussion (MfD/TfD/RfD etc.) | 3226 | 0.52% |
No process mentioned | 2564 | 0.41% |
If you're curious about counts for individual speedy criteria, here's the 20 that were most frequently mentioned first (where several criteria were mentioned, I only coded the first one and ignored the others).

There are probably some misclassifications in here since it's all based on text matching heuristics, but the overall distribution should be fairly accurate, I think. I hope that's helpful? Let me know if there are any other metrics you might be interested in. --Blablubbs (talk) 11:52, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
