Hello. I'm part of a research group at the University of Washington (Seattle campus), and my group is reaching out to Wikipedians in the Puget Sound area. We're hosting a focus group designed to gather information on what Wikipedians would like to know about each other when interacting on Wikipedia. Our end goal is to create an embedded application that helps people quickly know more about others' history and activity on Wikipedia, and we feel our design will be much more useful if it's based on insights of users like you.

I'm hoping that the chance to help out local researchers, to engage in lively face-to-face discussion with other Seattle Wikipedians, and to contribute to Wikipedia in a new way will entice you to join us. I removed the tag and added a couple references in the form of interviews with Remnant. It was very easy to find these -- a simple search for his name and "interview" brought these up. Please go ahead and do these simple searches before suggesting that article are deleted. People obvious put work into that article. Userspace list

Howdy, I replied on my talk page. Basically, feel free to move it to your userspace, but be careful which version you revert to. I think there was a reasonable version in the last few hundred edits, but the last few versions violated some strictly enforced policy. Now that the news-fad aspect of snowclones has died down, it should be easier to edit the list at a reasonable pace with citations to reliable sources. I see you removed a bunch of links to member of al Qaeda. But you didn't say why.

Please don't remove any more of these links. Red-links have value. Several academic papers have addressed the distinctions DoD analysts made between associates of al Qaeda, members of al Qaeda, and al Qaeda fighters. It is an important distinction. Geo Swan (talk) 00:26, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

I was working from my assumption of the consensus outcome of the series of RfD's on the subject that you've nominated over the last month and, in particular, the most recent RfD. As you can see from the discussion there, I'm not the only one who was under this impression.

If there is or should be a better target for those links, why wasn't that in the RfDs when you proposed them them? It would be pretty easy to create an stub, or a section of an existing article, that at least begins to detail differences in the distinctions you describe. It seems possible that some of categories might warrant a category and that some might not.

In any case, I'll happily not continue these edits until this is resolved. Sorry for an inconvenience. —mako๛ 01:50, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Hey Mako, I've gone ahead and reverted the few edits that I made in support of this misbegotten redlink cleanup as I was solely motivated by an erroneous impression from the old RfDs. Geo Swan started the more general discussion at WT:TERRORISM#Requesting opinions on how best to handle characterizations of associations with al Qaida or Terrorism?. Not a problem. It's just not clear to me that the reverts are, in fact, wrong, and, if so, why we're deleting them instead of pointing them to a stub or a section of a different. If there will be an article on the topic of labels of associate, member, etc., as form of US government classification of detainees -- or if this will become some section of an existing article, that would be the place to point these. But if that is going to be the case, why are we deleting the instead of retargetting? —mako๛

I've put links to a New York Times article and a Wired article. There are certainly more. Both were visible by clicking on the links in the templates. Folks should really make at least this basic effort before nominating pages for deletion. ICD Conferences Reports – Reliable External Sources to establish Notability

Hello Wikipedia colleagues, I have spent some hours over the past days and collected some independent, objective and reliable sources by reading the ICD online information and then google-ing the events and the conference speaker names to check other sources. As I understand it from the ICD website, ICD events are not public and by invitation only and even do not include invitations to the press or media, this is indicated on the ICD webpage. However despite that, I managed to find a serious amount of material (relative to an NGO) as you will see below, assessing WP:V and also WP:NPOV. At the bottom of this page I have raised concern to many negative remarks and comments made by Skara B and Media Hound on the ICD Wikipedia page. My major concern here is that it looks like that no matter what material is posted on this Wikipedia page, it will always attract immediately negative reactions of Skara B and Media Hound and they will annul them and say that they not be good enough for them. Therefore and in order to keep the work on this page as neutral as possible, I decided not to upload material to the Wikipedia page myself, but to post the resources in this talk page. My goal is to provide you with information that, to the best of my opinion, is reliable, objective, and supported by only a AAA sources, such as governmental institutions, top media organizations, high-level speakers (such as Heads of State) and to post them in this talk page to enable those who are interested, to use that for improving the page once and for all. As the activity of the ICD is very wide and continues over many years, I decided to start with investigating ICD conferences and events firstly and then move to other activities of the ICD as well as to include confirmations from governmental institutions where ICD is registered or able to conduct activities (which I will upload to the talk page in the next days). However, before we start with the conferences, I would like to draw your attention to the page on the website of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, where the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy is presented, please see the link below: http://www.kooperation-international.de/detail/info/icd-institute-for-cultural-diplomacy.html Now, I will move on to the conferences: 14 Conferences in total – As it seems, the ICD is normally organizing international conferences that are taking place mostly in Berlin, but not only. Usually you can see all of the lectures and interactive discussions and interviews with the speakers in the YouTube page of the ICD. After spending hours watching some of the clips (and there are many) I find that actually this YouTube page can stand alone by itself to provide a proof that all of the ICD conferences did in fact happen and all of the speakers mentioned on the ICD pages did in fact speak at the event, and in time some of them have even paid tribute to the ICD for allowing them the possibility to speak in the ICD. It clearly shows that Mark Donfried is always moderating all lectures and panel discussions and from watching the clips you can clearly see all banners of the ICD in the background verifying that the event is an ICD event. In many cases the speakers are also greeting the institute for its events. Mako, I have continued to collect all of the material and will continue to do so following your excellent guidance and will contact you shortly. In the meantime and as you can see, SkaraB/Mediahound is celebrating its “VICTORY” to harm the ICD and continuing with the campaign to harm the ICD in every possible way. Now “they” are going through the ICD Advisory Board members list and deleting references to the ICD. For example, Erna Hennicot-Schoepges, the Vice President of the ICD got “a visit” from them and they deleted any reference to the ICD, ignoring the fact that in her own website the Vice President mentions her role on the icd and of course it is also mentioned in the ICD website:

The anonymous editor is continuing like that with all of the pages of ICD members and will probably continue on the hunt against the ICD any way possible. This is of course not good for the Wikipedia and administrators and high level management of Wikipedia must be involved in this as this can have consequences for Wikipedia. I will now continue to observe and watch the activity of SkaraB and Media Hound and document all of their activities. At the same time, I will deliver the findings to Wikipedia authorities in order to stop this activity, as it has been going on for years already. I just wanted to let you know, however I am sure from the encouragements that I see in your talk page that Skara B and Media Hound have already contacted you and this game of theirs is already well known by you.

Myself and Skara keep getting content posted to our pages too - much of it making comments and innuendo of complicity in some great conspiracy. It was Skara on the grassy knoll, and I drove the get away car! P^) But statements are being made that we are to be watched and followed WP:HOUND?

As you have expressed an interest in working with the editor, it may be helpful if you ask them to post their concerns in the right place - Wikipedia:Deletion_review, they seem to act positively to you. They have been pointed there but don't seem to be able to find their way. Language and fluency may be the underlying problem. From me work with languages, it's clear that that that are not Western European (Latin - Romance - Saxon) - and the language forms fit a more eastern group (Slavic/Turkic). Just try your best to assume good faith and to ignore the noise. If you feel like this issue has gotten a little too hot or too personal, take a wikibreak or move on to other stuff for a while. Just a few days ago, Hessin has accusing me of libel and defamation in the article about me. This stuff blows over if you can ignore the crap, assume good faith, and focus on making the encyclopedia better and helping folks use their passion and interest to improve the project. Hi Hessin! I tend to agree with the position of Arthur Rubin: I wouldn't have deleted this information. But because the ICD was not found notable enough to have its article, keeping these references sprinkled throughout the encyclopedia is going to be a little harder now. I mean, Erna Hennicot-Schoepges has a long CV and there are many things on that list that are not in her Wikipedia article (and many we have omitted that she elected to list much higher). To add this back, a good source reporting on the fact be helpful, if not necessary.

Another piece of advice: try to tone down the claims against SkaraB and Media-Hound. The single most important rule in Wikipedia, in my opinion, is Assume Good Faith. I completely understand that this is not easy to do, but it's very important. If you are accusing and attacking other editors, they are going to attack you back, monitor your contributions, and make your life difficult.

Even though it's hard, you should try really, really hard to assume that other editors, like myself and like SkaraB and Media-Hound, are not on campaigns against ICD or each other. If you do this, you might even turn your "enemies" into great partners working to improve the articles and issues you care about. This conversation has entered a bad dynamic. But it's not too late.

Greetings JPEspi! I might be wrong but I don't think you "get" anything when you finish the training? Maybe this is something we might suggest to the folks form the Wiki Education Foundation who wrote that training material. Some students in the class got medals when they did The Wikipedia Adventure (it gives just tons of little medals).

In terms of editing, I meant just to use the system to get comfortable with the way people write things on Wikipedia and communicate. You're clearly doing that pretty well!

Hello Mako, how are you? I wish everything goes swimmingly on you! My name is Yibo Lu, I major in Communication at UW. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Art at University of Oregon in 2012. I am a Chinese native speaker and live in the U.S for seven years. I am interested in food, movies and travel. However, my favorite is my 1-month newborn baby girl. I would love to spend every second with her. I am really new to make contributions to the Wikipedia, even though I use it as a study tool for many years. Education program?

Are you aware of the Education program? That will allow you to set up dedicated course pages, for example, instead of having to use your user talk page for that purpose, and has some additional features to make the interaction of Wikipedia and a class easier. I left a comment there. I didn't read everything in a lot of depth but I think I ended up agreeing with you? I think that both you and the person you were arguing with got a little dug into your positions. There are options other than saying "free" or "gratis"? N.B. My interpretation was that you agreed with me that "free" was inappropriate, and that you were ambivalent about "gratis" as a replacement. On that note, the discussion has made me hope that one day I or someone else will find time to draft and propose (and, if necessary, lobby for) a Wikipedia guideline that the unqualified word "free" should not be used to describe nonfree software, for the reasons you and I both gave. That particular page has had six edits this year. You have access to people who can at least speak the language and might be able to find you some sources. The Belarus and other Wikipedia articles are just as poor, maybe you could convince others to engage with Wikipedia. Anyway, what bad luck. Eddymason (talk) 22:13, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

I noticed the page was mostly dormant and that the people who had created it had mostly moved on before I left the message. That said, I figured it was worth trying in case it was still on somebody's watchtlist. The lack of attention that many subjects get on Wikipedia is sad. My own research and work is pretty afield from Belarus but there is one other faculty member in my department who does work on former Soviet republics. I don't know if she speaks Belarusian but can probably forward on a message to others who do. Unfortunately, the news search engines and such that I normally use don't seem to have large Belarusian media databases and it's not clear that I could read them if they did. Consideration of Big structure for deletion

Thanks for letting me know that you are considering agreeing with a recommendation to delete the Big structure article. (I was not sure whether to comment here or on my own Talk page; please let me know if there is a proper protocol.)

I readily agree that the concept of 'Big structure' has not yet become widespread, I think the concept, though, in complement to Big data, is important and worthy of a reference. The most notable source for the concept is Jiawei Han, one of today's most prominent researchers in data mining. I encourage you to review Dr. Han's own qualifications, and then to listen to his lecture at Yahoo! Labs entitled, Big Data Needs Big Structure. (For that matter, you may want to review my own writings on big structure, but I understand that can be viewed as self serving.)

I have to say that I have been trying of late to add to Wikipedia in terms of developments in my field, with my next considered submission I was working on for knowledge-based artificial intelligence. I also use Wikipedia daily and understand concerns about having it lose its authoritative referencability through spam or promotion. I further understand that submissions must also withstand community scrutiny. I will say, however, that unduly aggressive single editor suggestions for deletion are a real turn off, and a disincentive to want to contribute. If there are problems of tone, I'd be pleased to hear and make corrections and let others make modifications in the Wikipedia way. Mkbergman (talk) 05:18, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Unfortunately, a single talk (even one by Jiawei Han) doesn't make the concept notable according to Wikipedia's notability policy which boils down to significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. If you can do that for big structure (and if through that process we can show that it's not original research) I will advocate to keep the article and we can maybe convince other editors. You've got about a week of discussion time total until Wikipedia will delete the article although you can probably request that it be moved to your "userspace" so that you can work on improving it there.

I completely understand that these kind of negative interactions up front can be a huge de-motivator and I've felt it myself and see it in many of the students I teach. Before you start a new article, I'd really suggest you check out the Wikipedia notability policy to make sure you can demonstrate notability of the article subject. Another thing that might be relevant is the idea that Wikipedia should not contain original research and the idea that editors/contributors should be very careful if they are editing on a topic for which they have a conflict of interest.
