Rango vandal

Hello Baseball Bugs. Because I semi-protected one of the affected articles a few weeks ago, I noticed your post at ANI about the BLP vandal. Looking to see if any additional pages were targeted, I did a site specific google search and whilst en.wiki seems clear [1], it looks like other language wikis may have been hit: [2]. Are we absolutely certain that this is factually incorrect? - I want to be 100% sure before I go removing information from articles in languages I don't understand. CIreland (talk) 18:52, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think you should visit wth Tenebrae about it, as he's more familiar with it - as shown on the WP:ANI page. You two might want to discuss it offline, for security reasons. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots00:15, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Guidance Re: ANI

Since I trust your judgement in these matters, I would like to ask for your advice as to my best course of action in this ANI. While I do not feel that I have done anything wrong, I would like to understand this matter from the standpoint of a highly experienced editor such as yourself. Thanks. Ebikeguy (talk) 20:48, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note. I'll have to read more about what's going on with that matter. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:55, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Does that one company still have a request visible online, to recruit wikipedia editing, and if so, what is the URL? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots21:09, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I do not think that the the company has a posted request to recruit wikipedia editing. Editors learned about the situation through WWB Too's posting, although most did not realize he was a paid editor until they had read several of his edits and comments. Thanks for your help in this. I will do whatever is right, even if that involves undoing edits I have made in the past. Cheers, Ebikeguy (talk) 21:13, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think there's a rule against paid editing as such, although it's certainly a hot topic. If paid edits can be identified, they should be, in my opinion. And such certainly have to be checked for validity and neutrality. I don't think it's a good idea to go off-wiki, in general. It's best to keep such issues here, and make the user community aware. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots21:16, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed about the paid editing. The question at the ANI is whether I broke editing rules by posting contact information for the organization who had hired the paid editor. I also encouraged editors to contact that organization and express how they feel about hiring paid editors, although I did not mention any one editor. Considering the reaction, I tend to agree with your assessment about going off wiki is not a good idea, and I doubt I will repeat such behavior, but I have not yet found any specific Wikipedia rule that prohibits doing so, so I conclude that the ANI should not find me "guilty" of anything, and certainly not harassment. If someone can point to a rule that I have broken, I will retract my post with the email address. Thanks again. Ebikeguy (talk) 21:30, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure about the specific rules, but I know I have seen editors here blocked for off-wiki harassment. It does seem that some clarification is needed. But if I were in your moccasins, I think I would say, "Sorry about doing that, and I won't do it again." ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots21:36, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wise words. Many thanks. Ebikeguy (talk) 21:40, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I find the attitudes here appalling sometimes. The difference is that I don't fight to the death (or the block) as I once did. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots15:24, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I had a go at it there some time ago (probably archives 6 and/or 7) and tried to stick to Policy (you know, those funny things we're supposed to actually adhere to). Of course like you, I felt that WP:BLP was the primary one. I also mentioned WP:COAT, several versions of "NOT" such as WP:NOTNEWS, and even mentioned WP:UNDUE. What gets me is that there are actually people arguing that none of it is politically motivated. I think you have to be pretty naive to believe that myself. Savage is by no means any Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow, or Rupert Murdock - but even giving the guy his 15 minutes of fame: Do we really need 3-4+ articles to cover this? I have to think: 100 years from now, just how encyclopedic is it to say "Dan Savage said that the poopy stuff that leaks out a bum after gay anal sex is what 'santorum' is." <tee hee hee - giggle, giggle> heard in the 7th grade boy's locker room. Just wow. And yea, I know I'm preaching to the choir here. :) — Ched :  ?  16:06, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This could be an episode called "Beavis and Butt-Head Discover Wikipedia". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots16:38, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If Savage - a syndicated columnist published internationally in dozens of markets for over twenty years - had just run a contest making fun of the Senator in 2003, and left it at that, then I would wholly agree with you. But that's not what Savage - an activist whose anti-bullying campaign drew the personal participation of the President of the United States - did. No, Savage - the author of five published books (each of which has its own Wikipedia article, and one of which formed the basis for an award-winning musical which also has its own Wikipedia article) - launched a careful campaign that has lasted over eight years, using his influence over tens of thousands of readers to induce them to participate in what is precisely the opposite of a Google bomb. This campaign by Savage - who for six years was the editor-in-chief of a major alternative newspaper and for five years has been its editorial director - has had enough of an impact on the Senator's political hopes that there has been substantial media coverage of the Senator's attempts to counter it.

That you, Baseball Bugs, had never heard of either Savage or his distasteful neologizing before seeing the article, is no excuse. You, Baseball Bugs, have written well over a hundred articles on subjects which are so obscure that I've never heard of them before seeing their articles. It would be far too POINTy of me to either delete them or suggest their merger, mind you, but do we really need an article on the song that was played over the end credits in Upstairs, Downstairs ? DS (talk) 20:11, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know, but at least it's not a BLP violation. And thank you for making the point that it's not about anyone except Savage, and should be confined to his page. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:45, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What made me think you did? I know the odd phrase but I can't really say I speak it. Something like Blackbrown is the hazelnut; Blackbrown (hair color) I am I am; Blackbrown must my woman be; Just like me. And how to explain the refrain, not quite a yoddle. Popular with the soldiers in the WWII and as far as I know the modern German army. Here it says the song is originally from the nineteenth century but I have an old cut and paste that says from Switzerland 1790. SlightSmile 19:13, 8 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've found it useful in preventing me from making mistakes with respect to other photographers. For example, someone added a photo of a new Hungarian statue of Steve Jobs. A quick look at that list and I knew to help them get in into the article nicely rather than have a pointless discussion about its copyright status. Yworo (talk) 17:55, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) I know the Worcester area well, and they should have really called themselves the "Worcester Woostas", as that's how they all say it up there. It's pronounced "woos-tah", with the first part pronounced like, "You're a wuss!" Which is likely a term they would reserve for any former or current Yankee player in history: they really don't like us Yankee fans there. Doc talk 08:29, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I also support the inclusion that East Germany be recognized as being a satellite state of the USSR, but could you provide a reason for your support

I know that you think it is obvious that it was a satellite state, but the discussion is not a straw poll but a debate that is going to be reviewed by a neutral third party user to make a decision based on the debate and its arguments - so showing your position is okay, but if you could add some evidence as well that would be more effective. For instance, you mentioned Soviet control over the Berlin Wall - if you could provide some reliable sources that demonstrate the Soviet control - that would help your argument.--R-41 (talk) 02:42, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reagan was stating the obvious. Instead of asking me for "sources", maybe they could simply read an article or two on what happened to Germany after the War. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:35, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't followed the discussion but I find it funny that people are suggesting East Germany wasn't a Soviet satellite. It was always a given that the Iron Curtain countries were Eastern Bloc. They were all Warsaw Pact and would have all fought along side the Soviets in the event of a NATO war, which was considered to be an inevitable event. SlightSmile 03:48, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bugs. In the film Mr. Baseball, the "Jack Elliot" character is on second base and trash-talks the second baseman, who in the fiction is also a former MLB player playing in Japan. Discussion at User Page talk about fake New Message banners

Hi, Bugs, before pitchers and catchers have to report, you might be interested (if you haven't seen it already) in a discussion about whether fake "You Have New Messages!" banners closely resembling the real thing are permissible on User Talk Pages. I can see both sides of the argument, so this isn't canvassing (perish the thought). Take a sentimental journey back to what must be by now one of your favorite (or at least unwelcomely-familiar) spots, Wikipedia talk:User pages#RfC: Should "new messages" banner hoaxes be prohibited?. —— Shakescene (talk) 19:04, 1 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Blues Bros.

That's a good scene, and it certainly brings to mind that Fawlty Towers episode that, at least first run, wasn't shown in Germany. (Basil to staff, preparing for German tourists: "Whatever you do, don't mention the war." ... [German tourist, to a concussed and confused Basil, over who started an unrelated argument: "Well, you started it." "No, you did, when you invaded Poland!"). Geez, I remember going to press screening of The Blues Brothers in 1980; seems like a long time ago now. The highlight for me was Aretha ... wow, did she belt it out! --Tenebrae (talk) 14:08, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, yes, the great Aretha, before she became as big as a house. The entry in Leonard Maltin's annual movie guide had the perfect review: "Off-the-wall from beginning to end." It was a huge hit in Illinois, of course, as at the time there were not many films that used Chicago as a location. Yes, a long time ago, and hard to believe that John Belushi would be dead 2 years later, and that director John Landis would be in serious hot water over the fatal helicopter crash in the Twilight Zone movie. In 1979-80, all was peachy. "Well, it's a hundred and six miles to Chicago; we've got a full tank of gas; a half a pack of cigarettes; it's dark; and we're wearing sunglasses." "Hit it!" ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots16:12, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

They must already be fishing for your endorsement

Why else would the Chairwoman of the DNC make such an invidious comparison? (remember that the next time they ask you for campaign contributions.)

But unlike certain self-aggrandizing real-estate magnates/would-be media celebrities whose names I'm far too polite to mention, I know that Mr. Bugs takes his endorsements very seriously, knowing what a grave responsibility he bears to those who trust in his erudition, sagacity, patriotism, steadiness and good judgement.

DNC chairwoman: Trump, Romney ‘both like firing people’

By Justin Sink (The Hill) – 02/02/12 11:56 AM ET

DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.) said the expected endorsement of Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney by reality show host Donald Trump was “a non-news event” and mocked both for making millions “firing people” during an interview Thursday morning.

“It really wouldn’t be surprising if Donald Trump supports Mitt Romney, because they both like firing people and they’ve both made millions doing it,” Wasserman Schultz said on MSNBC. “Donald Trump is such a cartoon character, an endorsement no matter who he chooses is like Bugs Bunny making an endorsement.”…

The proposed AN/ANI ban

I'm posting this on your talkpage rather than in the long discussion on the noticeboard because it's hard to find anything in that discussion.

It is obvious that there is a fair amount of dissatisfaction with your manner of participating on AN and ANI. Some of the editors commenting in the discussion disagree whether your pattern of commenting on the threads is so disruptive as to actually warrant a pageban, versus just having everyone grit their teeth and continue to put up with it—but there are relatively few editors suggesting that your participation is actually helpful or productive toward resolving the issues raised on AN/ANI.

Given these facts, do you have any suggestions as to how you might change your approach to these discussions to address the concerns that have been reached? If you have any ideas along these lines, right now would be a very good time to say so. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 22:20, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This sounds like 2009 all over again. If you think wikipedia is not worth defending against those who would damage it, right now would be a very good time to say so. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots23:34, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(1)I don't readily understand the reference to 2009. (2) I am sure most participants in the ANI discussion agree that "Wikipedia is worth defending against those who would damage it"; what is being questioned is your unstated premise that the manner in which you participate on ANI and AN is useful in such a defense. Newyorkbrad (talk) 23:37, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
2009 is another time when I defended wikipedia against trolls and vandals, and was scourged for it. And in this particular case, the complaint was driven by lies from a Weekly Reader user and its supporters. Be proud, wikipedians; be very proud. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots23:41, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Bugs, if every time you take up arms to defend Wikipedia, you end up getting scourged - isn't life trying to tell you something? Look, I love your humour and I don't for a minute doubt your good intentions. But might there not be a reason that people end up on your case? To reiterate NYB's question above, isn't there anything you could change about your approach to make it more productive? Kim Dent-Brown (Talk) 23:51, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I made my comment at AN before I saw this section here, but I want to reiterate what Brad said above, and will go further. Would you consider a voluntary topic ban of some duration, or a pledge to dial back the tone and volume (number of posts) of your commentary? If it helps, I too used to post to AN and ANI very frequently (in the days before I was on ArbCom). This was pointed out to me, and though at the time I justified it by saying to myself that I was being helpful, I still resolved to cut back on the amount I posted to AN and ANI, and it did actually help to not spend so much time at those venues. Even if you aren't prepared to voluntarily accept a topic ban, sometimes posting less is more. People may listen more when someone posts less frequently. I hope you will consider this and what others are saying. Carcharoth (talk) 01:35, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm pissed now, because I was thinking of saying/asking pretty much exactly what NYB and Carch have, omly hours earlier, in a section above. I could have been in the lead of such accomplished editors, and I let it slip through my fingers. :) I let it go at the time 'cause Bugs, my experience is that you get really defensive when you first get criticisms and refuse to admit you were wrong in any way for a while. But you do think about it, and I think you do eventually change (if grudgingly) and every so often I see comments from you which let on that maybe yeah you might have changed things a tiny bit. From my experience at the RefDesks (which you came to after a past bout of AN/I ban-Bugs discussions), you came a long way after much discussion. Except for a few nagging problems, I think you're actually pretty consistently helpful there now, with an acceptable amount of whimsicality mixed in. I'll echo the comments above then, can you just tone it down and think more about what exactly you are helping when you comment? As I hope you saw when you stepped back from troll-fighting at the RDs, you are not the sole defender of this wiki. I won't ask you to not insist on the last word, I'll bet that would be the toughest of all. :) Bet I can prove it right in this thread! :) Franamax (talk) 02:18, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, timidly weighing in now ... I didn't weigh in on the AN or ANI because 1) sometimes you really really make me laugh (you're not as good as The Fat Man Who Never Came Back at bringing levity and sanity to this place, but you are sometimes funny :), and 2) there is a terrible tendency taking hold at ANI where some admins who know nothing about anything and don't intend to do the homework to learn something about anything think They're All That And More, and they're quite willing to make everyone else miserable because it satisfies their need for power, so I didn't want to join in that mess of nimwits opining. But, seriously Bugs, your contrib count on that page alone indicates that something has gone too far. ANI is no longer useful for anything, and how are we going to deal with the inept adminning there and get reason to prevail unless we first improve the signal-to-noise ratio? If some sense of decorum can return there, then the really bad, lazy, shoot first investigate later, corrupt adminning will stand out, and be easier to deal with. Those folks won't get the power they seem to need, because they'll look foolish compared to the thoughtful and thorough admins, and maybe they'll go play somewhere else. So, I join in those asking (not demanding) that you stay away for a couple of months, just on the principle that "if what you're doing isn't working, stop doing it". ANI isn't working, and the result is often that the "guilty" walk and the "innocent" are shot. How about going to review some FACs? :) :) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 04:35, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar
Your message above reminded me of those times when socks/trolls/vandals were running amok and the Admins then were paying enough attention to all of the good you've done in defending something very dear to all of us - Wikipedia, without which there would no platform for anyone of us to build, contribute, discuss and deliberate. And for being that lone sane voice that's clear as a crystal amidst all the confusion when it comes to being a "Defender of the Wiki", hence the barnstar. Cheers and best. A perverse offer

Bugs - a few people have raised the idea of appointing YOU as the AN/I clerk. While it is certainly a bizarre idea on many levels, it also has a perverse logic to it. Classify it under "It's so crazy it just might work".

If you do want to explore the idea, I'd be willing to work with you to establish a set of terms and conditions which we could then take to the community for approval. Cheers Manning (talk) 04:04, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As I just noted, and as Fran reiterated above, my availability for wikipedia may well be limited for the short term. That doesn't mean I'm going to disappear. I've long thought it would be good for Bugs to have to make some tough calls and give a full rationale for each. Franamax (talk) 09:42, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dave - First we need Bugs to agree in principle. Then we need to develop a set of T&C that Bugs is willing to live by. Then we need to take it to the community for discussion and approval - not just the idea of Bugs as "clerk" but the very idea of clerking itself. It all seems a bit unlikely, but if Bugs wants to proceed I think there are enough people willing to help out. Manning (talk) 10:32, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • MB, Bugs and I are established long time editors so I think that alone is good enough reason to grant him (or me but I'd rather not, thank you!) the responsibility to clerk should he choses to accept it. The nerve of someone who claims that I get on his nerve... forget it, I won't even respond there (per WP:DENY), no point talking to someone who persistently disregard the interaction ban and wants to try his luck further, eh? Do as you deem fit, my dear wabbit. FWIW, I'm gearing up for the weekend, an airshow is coming up and I got trade visitor pass, woot~! Hi Bugs, please refrain from making comments such as the "Weekly Reader" one on any Arbitration case page. Assuming, for the sake of the argument, that Selina does indeed get special treatment, what purpose can be served by making rather puerile attacks on her website? The one editor raised the point of the double-standard that this Kyle seems to think is an eternal right - to say anything about anyone, without impunity. And given the ultra-childish nature of that website, you had best lose your own personally-attacking terminology. Puerile? I couldn't possibly descend to that website's level of "puerileness", even if I tried.Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:10, 18 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Deep breath Bugs. Patience. If someone is here to cause trouble, they will eventually trip themselves up (aka Plaxico), and the community will descend upon them. Yes, there are a lot of very juvenile people there. There also a lot of disgruntled people there who wanted to be a part of this community - but for whatever reason, they were banished. Perhaps even a few unjustly. There are also some good folks there from here that make their points quite well. I understand why you feel the way you do - honest. But this Selina person is posting in very high-profile areas, so if she digs a hole too deep (see WP:ROPE), then she'll be sent packing. It's not always a bad idea to point out our own short-comings; so long as we look at them objectively and then improve those faults. I know you've seen more than your share of things gone wrong here; just don't let a website mess with the wabbit's calm center. It's all good - life will weave it's way to where it's supposed to be. Page move

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give Everybody Works but Father a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Everybody Works But Father. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. --Several Pending (talk) 09:04, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Bugs! Wow - this is a "dilly of a pickle". What is going to happen with this, do you think, and what is it leading towards? You must know that they are going to get you broken on the wheel if you go back to your "old ways" on either of those two boards - a more formal, RfC-based community topic ban will be requested if this one doesn't pass (or they will bring the old one back, as has been suggested). I think you've honored the spirit of your self-imposed topic ban, and started a thread that was very ill-advised. The desire to silence you grows stronger, or at least remains strong, and perhaps it's best to stay on a break from it, as you have been. All the best, and good luck with this unpleasantness! Cooper

Regarding the ANI thread on Besse Cooper...I don't view my engaging at Talk:Besse Cooper as a "caution", and I certainly don't appreciate the thought that me being an administrator makes a difference. This is a case of WP:CONSENSUS, pure and simple, and any editor can - and should - feel free to engage in the discussion. I already expressed the opinion that it wasn't a matter for ANI...for you to then say (paraphrasing) "it's resolved because an admin stepped in" suggests far more than I intended or feel is appropriate. Of course, you're free to disagree, but I don't like the thought that an admin saying "we need to achieve consensus" carries any more weight than, for example, if you had said so.  Frank  |  talk  19:04, 10 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The ANI issue is resolved, because he wouldn't listen to me, but he listened to you, and now he's using the talk page instead of edit-warring. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:02, 10 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You miss my point completely. This isn't about one person listening to another. It's about your belief that admin action was necessary in the first place (it wasn't) and did anything to improve the situation (it didn't). You did not engage with Derby; you simply made a comment that was not designed to improve the situation, then went to ANI, and then, incredibly, declared the matter resolved when clearly no consensus had (or, indeed, has) been reached.  Frank  |  talk  02:32, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A Very Muppety Problem

Hello Baseball Bugs, approximately two months ago, you and I spoke of an IP hopper (which you named "Kermit") who was causing disruptions on The Muppets article and other associated ones. Shortly thereafter, the page was given semi-protection and the IP blocked from editing. It had appeared to end successfully. Unfortunately, it looks like Kermit is back at it again (under a new IP). I'm hoping you can assist me on tackling this problem again. I have written a new section on the article's talk page and left two messages on Kermit's talk page. I would be much obliged to your help, thanks! ~ Jedi94 (talk) 21:30, 10 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Bicycle Kick

You can read my explanation of the information provided on my user page, which is from where Keysanger took it. More than likely, he has a scheme in plan; but he likes to keep me in suspense. The key determinant of why neither Arafael or me wrote that is that message is that the alleged name provided to User:Arafael was false. In fact, it was probably somebody from Wikimedia Chile who created some fake account and made the Facebook post (in order to accuse us of canvassing). Regards.--MarshalN20 | Talk 13:19, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I have a good memory, it's just short. What's this about again? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots21:35, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This is a really, really, really long subject; so we'll have to take the (Acme) time machine! Warning: The following list may include some attempts at being funny about this serious, albeit silly, matter
  • Back in 2007 (or 2006), if you recall (I think you were somehow involved with this) I got into a content dispute with a Chilean user (Selecciones de la Vida) and a British user (English Peasant) over the information in the Bicycle Kick article.
  • After these users got their way on the article they abandoned it (not surprisingly). So I finally managed to make my improvements to it (which is the current version of it). It's really impossible to make a good article out of it given the tremendous lack of information available to do it.
  • In 2010 (or 2011), I made an expedition to the Spanish wikipedia to bring the light of my work into their article. Instead, I met the tribe of aggressive Chilean folk (otherwise known as Wikimedia Chile), whom brought along their warriors and chief (aka, administrator) to block any and all attempts at me trying to improve the article. My main argument was for them to change their article's from Chilena (Spanish for "The Chilean move") to Tijera (Spanish for "Scissors kick"). I based my argument on dictionaries (particularly one from the University of Barcelona, written by some person with the strange name of "Nomdedeu Rull"; I'm assuming his name must be Catalan), and they based their position on the made-up statistic that "chilena is the common name in Spanish".
  • I somehow managed to survive my expedition and made it all the way to the Falkland Islands (which is not that far from Chile). There I began trying to help the editors improve the article for GA status. We made progress and even got a fancy new introduction made (IMO, that introduction is good enough even for an FA article; except the rest of the article is not quite up to it).
  • Keysanger is, apparently, a Chilean (or related to Chile in some form or another) who has apparently the task to hunt me down here in the English wikipedia. We've had our fierce duels in the War of the Pacific article, where we ended up getting the peace pipe stuck down our throats by friendly administrators. I am relatively content with the outcome, which was a neutral solution; however, Keysanger is in no way happy about it.
Finally, leading to Keysanger's comment and your response to it ([11]).
This is a really silly situation. Keysanger's little post in the language board not only demonstrates that he is still looking at my user page (which I really don't mind that much), but that he has something up his sleeve. Given your reply to his message, my purpose writing all of this to you is to keep you informed of the matter just in case you may end up getting involved in this matter (which, honestly speaking, is quite possible).
And this, Bugs, brings us to the end of our ride through the time machine. Best of wishes.--MarshalN20 | Talk 00:12, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, so you wait 4 or 5 years and you still end up getting kicked around like a soccer ball. Could you maybe provide me with some key diff's so I can figure out what this is about? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots00:20, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Bugs, but at this point using diffs is practically pointless (there's just too many of them). Bicycle kick right now is on the peripheral because (1) Selecciones de la Vida and English Peasant (who is now "King of the Northeast" or something like that) never bothered to improve the article after the content disputes which, by all means purposes, they "won"; and (2) The improvements which I afterwards managed to attain are limited by lack of sources. Nobody is currently disputing anything on it; except that I have no idea why Keysanger made that translation request in the Language Board. His intentions are
The center of the current problem is the War of the Pacific article. You can just look at the Talk:War of the Pacific page to see the big mess going on right now on it. The problem is the following:
  • Keysanger wants the article to include in the text that "Bolivia declared war on Chile".
  • I want the article to retain the text which states that "Bolivia announced a state of war with Chile".
Keysanger bases his option on several sources which basically state that "Bolivia declared war on Chile". Generally, that would be the simple solution to the problem were it not for three things: (1) Sources exist which dispute this claim; (2) The authors which provide dates to the alleged Bolivian declaration of war contradict each other; and (3) When checking each of those dates with the actual events, none of them match with a declaration of war.
Keysanger claims my position is (1) original research, (2) a fringe theory, and (3) Peruvian POV. However, my position is not original research given the existence of sources which argue that Bolivia did not declare war. My position is not fringe either as a handful of sources actually dispute the existence of a declaration of war. Finally, my position is not Peruvian POV given the existence of Italian, English, and American sources.
Keysanger's strongest argument is the Fringe Theory one, because he has a long list of sources which repeat that "Bolivia declared war". The problem with these sources is that they are simply repeating things without going into detail about them. Only a few sources actually provide a thorough analysis of why they think Bolivia declared war. However, these few sources contradict each other on the date, and the closest concept to a declaration of war comes from the William F. Sater work which states that "Bolivia announced a state of war" with Chile (as a result of Chile invading their territory of Antofagasta without a declaration of war).
The neutral mediator, an Australian by the name of "Alex", ultimately agreed to include the text "Bolivia announced a state of war". So, this is why I am now trying to keep the established "consensus". On the other hand, Keysanger is still unhappy about the result. Apparently, the only way he will be happy is if he manages to get someone to block me from Wikipedia (which would then allow him to edit the War of the Pacific article to his liking). In this mess is where we go back to the Bicycle Kick question at the Language Board. What he plans to do at this point is a complete mystery to me.
To conclude this thing: There's just way too much WP:DRAMA involved here. To me this is all silly, particularly because Wikipedia is for me a hobby which entertains my mind (not a battleground). I know that me writing all of this to you is pointless because you want to see the diffs. I know that this isn't because you're a "bad guy" (anyone else would have just ignored the subject), but rather because without diffs you can't do much about this issue. So then you might wonder why I'm even writing all of this here? I'm writing simply to get my view across to others and to demonstrate that I'm not a POV nationalist (which is probably the picture that Keysanger wants to paint about me in the Language Board). Hopefully someday Keysanger will realize that holding a grudge against me won't get him anywhere, but there's not much else that I can do about it. Like that saying goes: "You can't make everyone happy". I do apologize to you for writing all of this bulk of text in your talk page; please do delete it (or collapse it into a box) if you want. Thank you for listening. Regards.--MarshalN20 | Talk 02:22, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think I can help with this. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots11:18, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
See, I knew Keysanger was planning something: [12]. He has taken all of my statements out of context. This reminds me of all those movies and books about obsessions; and none of them have a good ending. By the way, I have recently done a massive improvement to the Pisco Sour article. I'd like to take it for GA review, but need help with improving the English grammar. I would greatly appreciate your collaboration/suggestions on it. Best of wishes.--MarshalN20 | Talk 16:33, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

move discussion from WP's talk page

begin cut/paste from WP's talk page:

I can't speak for the blocked editor, nor do I condone edit-warring. However, I recall a year or two ago when I happened to see that image and couldn't believe it was being allowed here. It may well have been innocently chosen, but that doesn't make it appropriate for wikipedia. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots00:33, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Then comment at the appropriate talk page. I don't care what image is used; but edit warring and accusations of racism are not on. --Floquenbeam (talk) 00:45, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Taking this to your talk page. --Floquenbeam (talk) 01:01, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

end cut/paste

I think people who read that into the image are a little too focused on penis size. There is an extraordinarily wide range of body shapes, races, penis sizes, arm length, etc etc. You can't show them all in one image, and you can't try to insist on every characteristic being some median or average. If there's a consensus that too many things are out of proportion, then find a better one (or get a consensus that the old one is better). No, I don't agree that the image is some kind of stereotype, but that isn't even what WP is saying; he's saying that the image creator, and those supporting this image, are doing it for racist reasons. --Floquenbeam (talk) 01:08, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe if it had a white face instead of an Asian face it would be less of an issue. And if they insist on denying the obvious and reposting the illustration, then it starts to look like racism, whether it actually is or not. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots01:12, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are some perfectly well-reasoned arguments (which you may disagree with) by half a dozen people about this image at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Anatomy#Replacement of human anatomy image. Insisting that an image that has consensus not be replaced by someone screaming "racist" start to look like racism, whether it is or not? That makes no sense. --Floquenbeam (talk) 01:18, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Your comment makes no sense. What's so special about this particular image that you all want it, in particular, and no other? "Hey, Buddy, what happened? Where's the rest of it? Did they do your circumcision with a samurai sword?" ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots01:23, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You're not paying attention. I don't want it. I don't care. If you want to know why they want it, read the link. It doesn't appear they want this over any other possible image, they want this over the previous image. --Floquenbeam (talk) 01:28, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dispute resolution survey

Dispute Resolution – Survey Invite

Hello Baseball Bugs. I am currently conducting a study on the dispute resolution processes on the English Wikipedia, in the hope that the results will help improve these processes in the future. Whether you have used dispute resolution a little or a lot, now we need to know about your experience. The survey takes around five minutes, and the information you provide will not be shared with third parties other than to assist in analyzing the results of the survey. No personally identifiable information will be released.

Please click HERE to participate.
Many thanks in advance for your comments and thoughts.

You are receiving this invitation because you have had some activity in dispute resolution over the past year. For more information, please see the associated research page. Steven Zhang DR goes to Wikimania! 12:10, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

While this one may seem funny, much funnier was that Xanderliptak also got one of these notices. He's banned from both wikipedia and commons, so it would be interesting to see what he thinks of "dispute resolution" here. (His approach to dispute resolution was to threaten a suit. Yeh, that works.) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots04:55, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Has the Baseball season started already? A pointless occupation, from what I can see: someone dressed in thermal underwear stands on a pile of dirt, and throws a ball past another man also dressed in thermal underwear, and carrying a club. The man with the club swings at it and misses, three times, and then he has an argument with another man entirely, before storming off in a huff. The English have a much more sophisticated attitude to sports ;-) [15] AndyTheGrump (talk) 05:46, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the English have got it down when it comes to "sport".[16] Vivian Smith-Smythe-Smith was the horse I bet on, but he finished second. Doc talk 06:40, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As a native of London resident in the 'States, I can say, sure, the English have more civilised sports, burying themselves in cold mud on windy days playing Rugby or Association football ('soccer to you Yanks) with no protective gear above the shin guard and cup, or playing all-day cricket for several days in a row in the sun and wind (endlessly running back and forth, not even around a diamond). And having a seat for every spectator is a new-fangled innovation (goodbye to the 'Kop) forced by government and strong public opinion after a couple of deadly football riots. Of course a certain Grump has nothing on the Poet of Empire:

ye fawned on the Younger Nations for the men who could shoot and ride!
Then ye returned to your trinkets; then ye contented your souls
With the flannelled fools at the wicket or the muddied oafs at the goals.

Totally. I've watched the "tape" at least a dozen times now, and to me Ryan's stand-and-whine is almost as bad as Jim Joyce's call that robbed Galarraga of his rightful perfect game. Spaces

Hey Bugs! Regarding the spacing thing, a single blank line in the edit box actually won't generate the blank line when it's rendered, you need two of them to do so. Unfortunately there are people and automated processes that go around removing double blank lines. That's where the hidden comment comes in -- the comment doesn't generate anything itself, but the combination of the blank line above it and the blank line below it creates, when rendered, the single line of blank space.

As for the complaint about mobile phone, these folks have been trotting out that for years, and I've asked them for some sort of proof for years, but no one has actually done so. They seem to just assume that the blank line is in some way bad on a mobile device, without ever having checked to see if it's the case. I'm a reasonable guy (really!), and if someone would just show me the problem, I'd stop immediately, but no one ever has. The truth of the matter is, their complaints aren't based on observed problems, there complaints are based on their belief that MoS must be followed no matter what, which is not the case, not as long as it remains a guideline and not a policy. @Beyond My Ken: The mobile phone example is one example. The concept is that it is creating an extra line. It has been universal that the line is unnecessary. I see that you are the only person who uses it. And I don't know how many times I have to tell you but since this is a style issue, if you feel it is an issue, you should bring it up at WP:MOS. People have told you to stop. WP:IAR does not work in your case as discussed at length at your talk page. Edit tests on Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair

Hello, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I've noticed that you have been adding your signature to some of your edits to articles, such as the edit you made to Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair. This is a common mistake to make and has probably already been corrected. There is no need to sign your edits to article content, as the article's edit history serves the function of attributing contributions, so you only need to use your signature to make discussions more readable, such as on article talk pages or project pages such as the Village Pump. If you would like further information about distinguishing types of pages, please see What is an article?. Again, thank you for contributing, and enjoy your Wikipedia experience! Dear Bugs, it would probably pay to attend to people's suggestions that you stop soapboxing in a thread where they repeatedly suggest to you that you stop this. Posting references to reliable sources that draw into question material previously posted, or references to similarly "critical" perspectives is absolutely fine and a highly productive way to answer the original poster's question. Editing closed conversations

Hi, this is the second time that I can recall where you have edited a conversation that I have closed. While I do really appreciate the humor in that particular joke, somebody came along right after you and offered quite explicit medical advice. That's the problem with continuing to edit a closed section, even if your specific content isn't a problem - it effectively reopens it. I would just kindly like to ask you to consider leaving closed conversations lie, unless you have a reason not to. Regards, Falconusp t c 23:30, 10 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oy. I keep forgetting that some folks here have only double-digit HQ's. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots23:37, 10 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I do know that that was a joke; I did understand it, and honestly it wasn't half bad. But I'm just saying that when it's closed, it probably shouldn't be edited. What you wrote wasn't too harmful (not nearly as much so as the person that posted after you), which is why I didn't delete it immediately, but nevertheless, it did kind of defeat the purpose of closing the conversation. I did however promise that I'd remove any new posts there, so I guess I have to go follow through now... Falconusp t c 00:04, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bugs, could you please look at the Caen talk page and please comment there? And 2 in 2010 (almost 3, except for the umpire's goof), and 1 in 2009. So 5 of the 22 have occurred within the last 4 seasons. In the first century of MLB since the founding of the National League, there had been only 9 of them. Bullying

This reversion of yours appears to me to be bullying. You said in the edit summary, "No consensus. Don't revert again or I'll report you for edit warring." However, your own action was the exact thing you were warning against; a knee-jerk reversion in the face of, as you plainly state, "no consensus". In that case, longtime article conditions stand, no change is to be made, but you did not honor that. Binksternet (talk) 01:47, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Orange Marlin

I noticed ANI on my watch list and that piqued my curiosity. There seems to be a slow wheel war over his user rights. Since at least two of the rights are ones you can't use while blocked (I have no idea about reviewer), I can't fathom why it would matter, why a Commons admin would care, or why three different en admins would feel compelled to remove the permissions or why one admin would feel compelled to restore them. --B (talk) 04:28, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, he's OTRS, so it could be that Orange Marlin himself has asked for the permissions to be removed. (I don't know why he would, but that would explain why four different people have cared enough to try and make it happen.) --B (talk) 04:36, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

World Series 1998

Sorting through some papers, I came across a set of 4 (attached) tickets for the 1998 World Series between the Blue Jays and "National League Champions". I wonder whose fantasy this was? The Jays only came third in the ALE that year. Looks like I paid $180.00 for the tickets, so I was a dreamer, too. I wonder why I didn't turn them back in? Bielle (talk) 17:59, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe you thought they'd be worth more than face value someday, as a collectible? However, the Jays finished 20-plus games back in 1998,[24] so I don't know why they would have authorized them to print World Series tickets. Usually that's permitted in the last week or two before the season ends, only for teams that have a reasonable mathematical chance of getting there. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:05, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's what puzzles me - the fact of the printing more than why I failed to turn this block in. (There were two blocks, and obviously I turned in the first one.) Now, an unused block for the 1993 World Series, including the Joe Carter game, would be something else. However, I used my ticket for that game. Bielle (talk) 23:21, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Very strange. Is there a copyright date in small print someplace, or any other info that might clarify what this is about? What's the section number? (Don't need to give the row or seat number, that's too close to "outing".) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots23:24, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There is a copyright notice on the back of each ticket: copyright 1998 Office of the Commissioner of Baseball. All Rights Reserved. The tickets are marked with Gate 11, Aisle 130B, Row XX, Seat X. (I haven't owned the tickets since that year, so I am not really worried about outing.) Bielle (talk) 17:18, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) This is very interesting. One of the benefits of being a TPS is coming across conversations like this that where I learn something new. Here is some WP:OR that might be worth thinking about. If memory serves somewhere in the mid 90's was when pro teams started instituting things like "personal seat licenses" to gouge er bring in more revenue from their fans. For teams that routinely sold out they started making people send money in to reserve their place on the waiting list. I know from one friends experience with Colorado Rockies tickets that, should you want a refund, they would do everything possible to keep your money. They spent the better part of a 25 minute phone call trying to convince them to apply the money they had sent in to next years tickets. It would be interesting to learn which month of the season they had you buy those tickets but I am sure that it is too long ago to find that out. It must have been great to be a part of that 93 championship. Cheers to you both. MarnetteD | Talk 17:52, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If they are still numbered the same way as they were then, that would be a lower-deck box seat down toward the left field corner, likely a season ticket location. I would suspect, or rather guess, that they were what I might call "placeholder" tickets, issued far in advance to season ticket holders. Obviously, the Jays were nowhere close to being in the post-season that year. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:21, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Something has changed because we were in what is now labelled Section 122, (immediately to the left, looking down at the field, of the aisle running straight up from home plate - field level, row 18, seats 5 and 6.). These were our seasons' tickets for about 10 years. MarnetteD might have something. I dimly recall having to pay for these very early and then being "encouraged" to leave the ticket money in my account account to pre-pay part of the following year, which turned out to be the year in which I gave up the tickets. And yes, 1993 was a great year for the Jays' fans. Bielle (talk) 22:43, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the Sporting News baseball guides for 1998 and 1993, I see that Aisle 130B was in that same location those years as now, and Aisle 122 was also then what it is now, just to the left of being straight behind home plate. As an amusing aside or a bit of odd kharma, given the news this week, the cover of the 1998 guide features Roger Clemens - in a Blue Jays uniform! ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots23:38, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I really had to dig deep into old files to find this info: my season's tickets were Section 122, Row 32, seats 103 and 104. So, what am I doing with an unused block for an entirely different set of seats? Thanks for your research, Bugs; it spurred me on to check, but now I know less than I did at the beginning. Bielle (talk) 01:16, 21 June 2012 (UTC) P>S> Clemens was a good Blue Jay.[reply]
I advise you to hang onto them just in case they are a collectable. Regarding Clemens, I didn't start to dislike him until he became a Yankee. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots02:35, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I could say that about almost any Yankee player. Bielle (talk) 03:38, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are certain Yankees I've liked, but it's a pretty short list. (For example, how could anybody not like Yogi Berra?) I should also mention that you might want to search for this kind of thing on Google, and see if anyone else has them, such as on eBay, and then you could get a sense of what they're worth - and maybe even why they were printed in the first place. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:40, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As one editor pointed out on the ref desk, the Jays were in the wild card race, even though they were a mile behind the Yanks. That, and the fact that the best seats are usually reserved for VIP's, likely accounts for the existence of those tickets. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots11:43, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bugs, yes, but an editor at the article is arguing that it's a how-to violation and therefore unencyclopedic. I'm trying to get more outside views so that WP:Consensus can be reached. The relevant WikiProjects haven't yet responded on the matter, only three editors from "What Wikipedia is not" have responded, as stated before, and I'm not sure how big of a turnout the RfC will generate.
