Black Jack

Hi, Bugs. Despite our differences, you know I like you. (Or, at least I hope you do.) But were you serious that I stumbled across "Black Jack" Pershing due to my knoweledge of the game of blackjack? I'm not sure if you were joking or serious. In any case, my interest in Pershing is largely tied to my interest in World War I. I'm not really much of a war buff, but I've always been interested in World War I, as it's largely been relegated to an afterthought, in the wake of World War II. World War II was not only a direct result of World War I; it was basically just a continuation of it, after a 30 year truce. I've also always been interested in the ways that that war was fought. Europe had enjoyed decades of peace at the outbreak, and military technology reflected that. The war that began with bicycles, horses, and wooden ships, was finished with tanks, submarines, and airplanes. When Pershing took his troops across the Atlantic in 1918, he did so as the underdog, and came out victorious. In any case, maybe you were joking about the whole thing, but I hope that clarifies my interest in him for you.Mk5384 (talk) 23:44, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info. I was "serious" in that one topic leading to another is how I find out new things, and I thought maybe that was your approach also. But in this case it was a coincidence. Sorry about jumping to the wrong conclusion. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots06:30, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A note regarding denial

I've noticed you calling out a number of trolls and suchlike by identifying their IP range as being well-known, as well as your usual insults (drive-by IP's, etc). I find this behaviour annoying; I'll admit that. But I'm asking you to stop it because it fails to WP:DENY quite badly; those offhand insults and elaborate semi-discussions about it are what lets trolls thrive. Simple, direct answers to fairly innocuous questions (such as this one - not the best example though) would just bore them while DENYing them at the same time.

This is just a request. I won't pursue it any further. I apologise also if there haven't been as many of these as I think; maybe it's just my perception. Vimescarrot (talk) 23:37, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. Strikeout

Speaking of Cubs, I noticed your Mr. Mármol with his 17 Ks/9 IP. ESPN mentioned that would set a ML record if it holds up. They neglected to mention what the record currently is! Any idea? Wknight94 talk 12:35, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that's an interesting one. I hope Marmol doesn't eventually get added to the list of Cubs pitchers who got overused and burned out their arms. Among starters, anyway, the answer appears to be Nolan Ryan.[3] Relievers would be a different animal. Looking at Retrosheet, I found that Mariano Rivera averages about 1 strikeout per inning, so he's nowhere close to Marmol. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots13:26, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think they were talking single-season too. Baseball-ref says Randy Johnson but that's with the lofty 1 IP/game rule which excludes relievers. I used to have a database populated from http://www.baseball-databank.org but who knows where that went - then I could use whatever rules I wanted. Wknight94 talk 13:53, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

Hi ... I don't know if you've seen this discussion, and of course don't know your view, but thought it might interest you given that you often weigh in on the general subject ... I believe we've covered this a number of times over the past four years. Best.--Epeefleche (talk) 18:26, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note. That's kind of a "figger filbert" issue. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots18:54, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In the late 1870s, RBIs were viewed as such. They weren't even considered an official baseball stat. Surely, there are a bevy of numbers beyond those that might be added here -- such as "at bats" and "on base percentage" and "saves" -- that might better qualify as a figger issue, no?  ;-) --Epeefleche (talk) 19:02, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The most important stats are those that have to do with producing runs. I suppose the emphasis on batting average had to do with the perception that a guy with a better average is a better hitter, i.e. that he "sees the ball better". But bases-on-balls likewise demonstrate a keen batting eye. You might call the rise of the OBP a statistical "Williams shift". I'm not sure anyone thought much about OBP until Teddy Ballgame and his scientific approach to hitting came along. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:09, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. I, as I expect you can, can recall the days when the NYT League Leaders did not include OBP. What I'm struggling with in that discussion is the view of some that we should reflect batting average. But they should as a general matter delete mention in the infobox of, for example, OBP. Three or four editors have expressed that view, declared it an overwhelming consensus, and at least one has gone about deleting OBP, etc. As "clutter" and non-consensus.--Epeefleche (talk) 19:25, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • What do you think about limiting editor discretion somewhat. So, of the three batter #s, say if they are filled in at all, two should be OBP and SP. And if the 3 pitcher #s are filled in at all, and it is for a closer, one # should be saves. We could expand on this concept. Result: addresses your implicit concern that some stats we never heard of will be the stats filled in. What I'm seeing, is our colleague going around deleting OBP from the infobox, because of his interpretation of "consensus" in that string.--Epeefleche (talk) 05:08, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A question

Got a question for you! I am considering doing an article on a single regular season baseball game, the July 10, 1932 Athletics-Indians game, which is interesting for a lot of reasons, due to the "blue laws", the Athletics had to play on the road on that Sunday, for a one game series with the Indians, meantime they were playing 4 home doubleheaders on the days around the game (9 games in 5 days), so Mack took only two pitchers (he was also saving on train fare), Lew Krausse Sr. left the game after an inning (supposedly knocked out although I am not sure, more research needed), and Eddie Rommel came in, and pitched the rest of the game, which ended 18-17 Athletics after 18 innings, and all sorts of records were set. It may also have led to the abolition of the Pennsylvania blue laws (more research needed). I'm concerned about the possibility of an AfD. Thoughts? Thanks,--Wehwalt (talk) 11:43, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, to get you started, here's the Retrosheet game log for the A's in 1932:[4] which shows they played 6 doubleheaders in the space of less than 2 weeks - in late June and early July, in the daytime, which must have been fun. NOT. "Knocked out" could mean literally or could be figuratively "knocked out of the box", which left that poor sap Rommel to pitch the other 17 innings (although surely they could have brought a position player in to pitch if it came to that). I recommend starting the article as a sub-page under your user ID, which will keep the deletion-happy editors away from it, and accumulate information until it looks good and "notable". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots15:03, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I googled [cleveland indians july 10 1932] just to see what would turn up. It seems that Johnny Burnett (baseball) set a single-game record by collecting 9 hits that day (a fact documented in his article). A list of records set in that game would be a good bit of info, especially any records that still stand, such as Burnett's. Another interesting one-game situation, noted in the the Billy Maharg article, was the game the Tigers played against the A's in 1912 when the Tigers players staged a one-day strike after Ty Cobb was suspended for attacking a fan. On that occasion, the A's pounded the rag-tag team the Tigers put together. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots15:08, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I know, and Jimmie Fox hit 3 home runs, and the 29 hits against poor Rommel were a major league record too. I am hoping to go to Cooperstown and spend a day researching there, perhaps in November. I am hoping I can tie the game to the abolition of the blue laws, which helped lead to the ridiculous situation. I agree, I will do it in my userspace. I've been looking for a sports topic on which to do a FA from scratch, and this game has been my best candidate. It all depends on how much in terms of articles and so forth they have up there. Thanks for the sheet. I think Krausse must have been injured, I can hardly see Mack going to the bullpen so early with only one pitcher out there for any other reason. Mack was obviously unwilling to invest many resources in winning this game with all the doubleheaders going on. Incidentally, with the win, the A's got as close to the Yankees as they ever would get the rest of the season. Lots of interesting stuff, and I'll keep you posted on it!--Wehwalt (talk) 23:37, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know for sure what the National Baseball Library would have on it, but you could probably find out a fair amount by getting hold of newspaper coverage via microfilm, for Cleveland and Philadelphia, at least for the game itself. I have a 1970s book called The Scrapbook History of Baseball, and on page 138 it has a "clipping" about that game, titled "Records Flop As Athletics Take Indians". Unfortunately, it does not say why Krausse was taken out in the first inning. As far as blue laws are concerned, the first legal Sunday home games for the A's were in April of 1934, and it's possible contemporary newspaper coverage would have spoken about what led to the abolition of that particular blue law. There's a book from the 1990s called To Everything a Season, by Bruce Kuklick, which discusses the blue law situation on pages 70-72, but it does not mention the 1932 game. It does say the A's tried various tactics to pressure the government into abolishing the Sunday baseball ban, and that for 1934 the state gave local governments the option to override the state blue laws. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots01:09, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't remember, I was a lot sloppier back then. We're talking about the Krausse and Rommel articles? I would expect that the Hall of Fame would have a large number of clippings from that era, that kinda thing. I would get in touch with them first. I've read the NY Times article as I have access to their archives, it is fairly uniformative.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:16, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a Google Books reference to a Baseball Digest article on the game.[5] It doesn't shed much additional light. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots01:23, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, but it is a good little article which catches most of what I had learned (except that it doesn't say that Mack's goal was also to save trainfare). And it still doesn't say why Krausse was relieved. I do like Mack's comment at the end of the game ... I would like to have seen BD's bibliography on this.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:46, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In searching for this game, I haven't seen anything to suggest that Krausse was literally "knocked out", just that he didn't pitch well and Mack replaced him, which he might not have done if he knew the game was going to go so long - but if he had left him in, maybe it would have finished in 8 1/2! ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots01:51, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, obviously Mack had no idea what would happen, and it was 1932, when pitchers were expected to finish the game, so Mack believed Rommel would do what was necessary, which he did. Just a bad managerial decision that wound up turning out OK. I wonder if the sportswriters following the team dared ask Mr. Mack any questions about it on the train ride back to Philly.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:58, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Given that he was constantly trying to get the officials to lift the blue laws, he might have done it on purpose. But they crossed him up, by winning. I think your best bet would be to look for local coverage, in Cleveland and in Philly, the day after the game. They would probably have more info than the N.Y. Times would. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots02:16, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and the day after that as well, the sportswriters may not have had time to file all their thoughts before jumping on that train. Fortunately the game only took 4:05, and there were a lot of trains in those days.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:34, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
4:05. What a marathon. Still, it's long compared with the 3:50 that was needed to play those 26 innings in 1920. I would think, though, that the next day's papers would at least indicate why the pitcher was taken out, or at least clarify if he was literally or just figuratively "knocked out". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots02:40, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I doubt he was knocked unconscious, I'm more interested in whether he was injured or not. Besides, I've been to Cooperstown only twice and would enjoy going again, once the summer crowds clear. Of course, the 26 innings was 1-1, wasn't it? I remember going to bed as a 12 year old listening to the Mets-Cardinals game, woke up in the morning the Mets had lost in 25 innings, the longest decision ever.--Wehwalt (talk) 02:46, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Local papers might say. More likely than the Times, which would have merely given a game summary. By all means, go to Cooperstown! Even you don't find any new data, at least you were there. Yes, the 26 inning game was 1-1, with both starters going the full 26. I also recall that Cardinals-Mets 25 inning game, from 1974.[6] As I recall, I heard the early part of the game on the radio, then went to my part-time job which ran from 8 pm to midnight, and was surprised to find the game still going when I left work. I think it finally ended around 1:00 a.m. central time. My favorite moment was when the ultra-tired Jack Buck truncated the usual post-game disclaimer by simply saying, "This game is presented under the authority of major league baseball - and is prohibited!" I think the White Sox had a 25-inning game sometime during the 1980s, but it was suspended and completed the next day, which seems like cheating somehow. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots02:57, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That White Sox game was in 1984[7] and it was actually suspended after 17 and they played 8 more innings the next day before the Sox finally won it. And as I recalled correctly, Harold Baines hit the walk-off in the last of 25th. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:07, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Though somewhat shorter, I have memories of the 16 inning Mets Astros playoff game from '86. I watched the first nine innings at home, then listened to it on the train on the way to grad school. Couldn't listen to it on the PATH train, but the final two innings in class at NYU, with the professor very tolerant, especially when I announced the Mets victory.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:12, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Anyhow, how should the article be named?--Wehwalt (talk) 19:41, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is there enough material for a full article, or should it be an expanded portion of an article on lengthy games? Another angle might be what BBD did, which is to call it one of the odder relief appearances. In fact, is it the longest relief effort ever? I think you should run this by the baseball project page and see what a wider audience has to say about it. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:08, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Dunno. May not know until I get up there. May be best to wait until I do.--Wehwalt (talk) 20:15, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

At the same time, I didn't use my admin rights to e.g. lock it in this position, anyone is free to revert. The end result is still a compromise, and one in which the title of the page users end up at is called the way Europeans call it, so it just can't be said that it's tilted all the way in the Americans' favor. Hi Baseball Bugs. Hope all is well. I recently came across this report you made at WP:AIV. I know I already blocked J1mj4m as a sockpuppet of LC, but I'm interested in knowing what made you think that this particular user was a sockpuppet. I was asked via email to clarify the reason behind the block, but all I could say was that you had much experience dealing with LC and that I trusted your judgment. I look forward to your reply. Best, FASTILY (TALK) 02:44, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My suspicions are based on two things: (1) That he went to that particular IP address, out of the blue, which was already blocked as an LC sock; and (2) that LC has been active tonight in general. If you're convinced he's not LC, you could unblock him. But I would like to hear his explanation of why he went to that one particular IP and posted a fake "unblocked" notice. If he's not a sock of LC, he's a sock of somebody, almost for sure. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:03, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I too have spoken to the user in question and I have had a few misgivings but AGFed what he said. He does seem to want a lot of tools but is willing to work for it. If he is Light Current, he is a pretty damn good actor in my opinion. I do think the IP address thing is pretty damning and would support it if you blocked him. If you look at his userpage history, the fact that he created a subsection on me and then deleted it is pretty creepy in and of itself. If the user is indeed a sock, I was duped for two hours of my life on IRC though. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 03:21, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you think that I am a sockpuppet of Light Current, and J1mJ4m one of my socks, then why have you not blocked J1mJ4m? If you accept that I am not a sock of LC, then we are done and I shall never hassle you again. However, if you continue to block me as an LC sock, then I will come back with a new IP from this range. And if you range block me, I will switch service provider. I will not go away until you admit you were wrong. I will await your apology, but somehow I suspect admitting you are wrong in front of everyone else is beyond your capabilities, hence I shan't hold my breath. "Christian fascists"

Your "Christian fascists" claim at Talk:Marriage may or may not be correct - but in any case, it's not good strategy. It's not going to win over the folks you are arguing with, and it doesn't make you the appearance of being the calm, reasonable individual that might serve to win over undecided folks looking in. As a matter of Wikipedia policy, it's both against WP:PA and it fails to advance the cause of editing the article, so its something that shouldn't be on the talk page. I know those IP guys ain't exactly being good neighbors, but this isn't a place where you win by being lower than them. He checked out Monday, at 86. Not that many one-shot heroes in the game (well, there's Larsen, and Fisk too, though Pudge has solid HoF credentials). Not that many ballparks, either, where hitting home runs is like playing golf. PhGustaf (talk) 21:04, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, I hadn't heard. Thanks for the update. Yes, the Polo Grounds has to be the most strangely designed major league park there ever was. I wonder how many homers Mel Ott would have hit in a place like Braves Field? Probably not near as many. Thomson played a number of years, though he must have figured his career was on the downside when they sent him to the Cubs. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots21:11, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Red Sox fanatics have never forgiven Bucky "F***ing" Dent for doing nothing more than his job. (He didn't escape a visit to the stands of Fenway a few years back completely unscathed.) As far as I know, he did nothing vicious, malicious, underhanded or improper. Of course, one play will forever dog the life of Bill Buckner as surely as the shot heard 'round the world marked the life of Bobby Thomson. And I'd heard of the Merkle Boner long before learning anything about the rather more substantial career of Fred Merkle. —— Shakescene (talk) 21:24, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Fans sometimes forget that this is professional baseball. I'm sure there were some who said "Traitor!" about Johnny Damon as they did about Roger You-Can't-Prove-It Clemens. But if that fan were offered a higher paying job at a rival company, don't you think he'd take it? (I still call him "Bucky F'ing Dent", though.) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots21:30, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The preferred epithet among the Fenway Faithful, I believe, was "Johnny Demon", but sometimes, as with Roger Clemens, those animosities give way to better memories over time. —— Shakescene (talk) 00:13, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know for sure, but I'm thinking Damon didn't diss his former team. I'm reminded of a character named Chuck Knoblauch, who went to the Yanks and dissed Minnesota, and was booed mercilessly every time he brought his over-the-hill body to the Metrodome after that. In contrast, Babe Ruth was held in high esteem in Boston, although he was held in high esteem in a lot of ballparks. (Maybe not in Wrigley Field in 1932.) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots00:17, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, Damon shaved off his beard for several million dollars, and I would shave off mine too. Buckner got a bad rap; there was a very fine defensive first baseman whom a competent manager would have put in in a heartbeat. PhGustaf (talk) 21:44, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As a diehard Sox Fan, all I have to say about Mr. Damon, is that I wish him well, and hope he is satisfied with the results of his move. As for Bucky F*cking Dent and Aaron F*cking Boone, well their names say it all :) Soxwon (talk) 00:18, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Latest news is that the Tigers are prepared to trade him back to the Red Sox, but (with a no-trade clause in his contract and some bad memories of the circumstances of his earlier departure) Mr. Dæmon himself is thinking over whether he really wants to come back. —— Shakescene (talk) 05:15, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Johnny Dæmon said he thought it over, and decided against leaving the Tigers this year. You can now call him the Detroit Demon or Johnny Dætroit. —— Shakescene (talk) 03:15, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Smart move or non-move. Regardless of circumstances, I've observed over time that when a player returns to his original team after a number of years, the sequel typically does not live up to the original. The Cubs used to do that kind of thing all the time. Come to think of it, they might have their eye on Johnny D right now. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots06:33, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Funny that you should mention Chicago. Rumour is that another former Red Sox idol, although one who left with far less respect (after e.g. knocking down the travelling secretary), Manny Ramírez, is leaving the Dodgers for the White Sox. Joe Torre's tolerance for Manny being Manny may be even shorter than Tito's. —— Shakescene (talk) 07:13, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The fact the Dodgers are likely going to miss the playoffs probably figures into it. Manny has done all he can there, as it were. He might fit in with the White Sox. First, Ozzie will be able to understand every word he says in Spanish, and also, Ozzie doesn't seem to mind having characters around (such as A.J.), being as how Guillen himself is something of a character. He also speaks plainly and straightforwardly. When asked why the Cubs were jinxed, he said it has nothing to do with goats, it's just "horse manure teams" (to put it semi-politely). Ryne Sandberg said it a little more eloquently, when asked about why his teams failed even in their best years, "We always seemed to be a player or two away." That's pretty much da truth. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots08:21, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder how Ralph Branca is taking it. It's like Siamese twins they've been the past 50 years or so.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:33, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't heard. I expect he's upset. Although he also suspected that the Giants won because they were stealing signs, although Thomson always said he didn't do that. But as Bud Greenspan pointed out, if Gil Hodges had been playing a normal first base when the lead is 4-1, the inning might have been over in a hurry and there would have been no Miracle. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots00:35, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I read the book. If Thompson wasn't stealing signs, I have this bridge in Brooklyn ...--Wehwalt (talk) 00:47, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And since the Dodgers were fairly certain the Giants were stealing signs, maybe they could have adjusted for it. Also, how did the Giants manage to win the game in Ebbets Field and then lose the first of the two in the Polo Grounds? I think the Dodgers were spoilsports. Although if it weren't for losing on the final day in consecutive years, it would have been Dodgers-Yankees for five consecutive World Series. That would have been interesting. to this day

Should I leave it? It seems to add nothing to most sentences, and strikes me as a rather poor way to pad out an article. When I've put 'pointless' in my edit summary, I've done nothing more than delete 'to this day'. If I have only put 'remove' cliche I have (in my opinion) made the sentence more elegant. I just hope there aren't many pages that have 'at this moment in time' in them. Bevo74 (talk) 15:43, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bugs, We really, really would like to enjoy the entertainment of your candidacy. Your ability to spot drive-bys, trolls, impostors and socks, countered by your paranoia, immaturity, and inability to perform even simple math will always make for a colorful discussion. Please consider nominating yourself for a fun filled adventure. 217.23.5.195 (talk) 18:31, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nah, it's more fun this way. Being an admin is drudgerous and thankless. The only times I've ever considered running are when other admins have suggested it off-wiki. I guess they want someone to share the misery with. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots23:11, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not talking about it being fun to be an Admin. I am talking about the spectacle of the RFA process with you in the center ring! The process will be fun for all. In the end everything will be back to normal, but for a magnificent seven days, we will have much joy. Please do consider. On a seperate note, have you ever been to Bodo? 217.23.5.195 (talk) 00:26, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Funniest Commercial I've seen in a long time...

Old Randy's still a fireballer. Soxwon (talk) 02:13, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I finally watched it. Great stuff. I remember one he did when he was still active, talking about his various pitches, one of which he called "Mr. Snappy". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:59, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"Mr. Snappy." Wasn't that his slider (and if so, I'm there are some other batters with more colorful descriptions of it. Soxwon (talk) 00:55, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. There was also some footage of a player (maybe John Kruk) ducking away from one of his pitches, and Johnson saying, "I really don't know where a lot of these are going", or some such. Also something about Mr. Snappy having "a mind of its own." To show how effective those ads were, I have no idea which firm he was plugging. (Apparently it was ESPN.) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots01:05, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He hit a triple today. Not something that happens often; triples mostly go to guys more nimble than he. Like pretty much everybody. But I'll take the run. PhGustaf (talk) 00:23, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

His momentum would have carried him into the Green Monster and perhaps clobbered a fielder or two on the way. Looking it up, I see this is his 14th triple. This is not too bad, considering his mobility, but is less an offensive asset than, say, Don Baylor's talent for being hit by pitches. PhGustaf (talk) 19:17, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The personal ban remains intact regardless of the other guy's status. The IP that poked his head in there might be a sock although the location is wrong. But it seems that the admins have it under control. As for Hinata / Ddd1600 / a range of IP's, it's obvious Hinata is not a new user, but a CU will need to determine if the IP's are him or if it's that impostor that keeps turning up and trying to get other users in trouble (an MO that goes back more than a year). ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots06:31, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(I think I basically agree with your oft-repeated stance against "nannying" others at the desks. Generally, it isn't a good idea, and I hesitate whether to make this post or not, but here goes):

Do you think it's possible to activate some sort of internal Bugsbrain-filter that might stop you from making comments and jokes at the expense of a group of people? I'm not talking about referenced answers that are pertinent to the question but happen to document unpleasant truths, WP is not censored and all that. But I think we all should be careful in our more off-topic comments and opinions.

The desks are read and populated by all sorts of creatures. Different age groups, cultural backgrounds, locations, levels of education, etc ... I know that political correctness is a concept everyone loves to hate, but it's really just about not unnecessarily offending other readers and volunteers. You've read the reactions. I dislike seeing that many threads prompted by your style, but I think it would make things a lot easier for everyone, if you kept your self-censor active. Just about all of my favorite comedians boldly defy our cultural norms and taboos, but the desks really aren't the best place for this kind of routine. The audiences are different. I hope this doesn't come across as patronizing. My intention is to make the desks more enjoyable for all, including yourself. Removal on the reference desk

May I ask why you removed this question, and responses, from the Reference desk: [12]? I understand that the question may not have been asked in good faith (or maybe it was), but many of the responses were adequate. I think it would be at least appropriate for you to indicate somewhere (either on the Reference desk talk page, or the talk pages of the responders) what you have done, so that we don't have to dig through the history to find out where it's gone, and wonder why it disappeared. Chabad smurf. - Wikidemon (talk) 06:37, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Somebody thought that one photo made that guy look like a Smurf, i.e. it looked blue. Then some nanny changed the section title, and some other nannies have tried to close down the resultant megillah without consensus. Had they left well enough alone in the first place, nothing would have come of it. You're right, it is kind of perversely funny. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots06:41, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what it is but this kills me. I hope it's okay to laugh without consensus. - Wikidemon (talk) 06:47, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder sometimes. As I've said more than once there, and of course no one's paying attention, they're yelling at the wrong guy. Their complaint should be with that website that posted several ugly photos, some worse than the blue-faced one. This is an "Emperor has no clothes" kind of situation. One editor says, "Look at that picture! It makes the rabbi look like a Smurf!" Another editor says, "How dare you compare the rabbi to a Smurf?" And it goes downhill from there. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots06:51, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, you've got it all wrong because no one cares what you compare anything to, as long as you do not cross the line and insert headings or sub-headings into articles that are needlessly insulting when non-insulting simpler wording could easily have been used. Thus, if the issue is about a photo that looks too blue you don't right off the bat resort to labeling the subject "Smurf Shach" especially as it was done by an editor, User Insert coins (talk · contribs) who almost always edits Christian and Church articles, so this might even have a taint of possible antisemitism in some editors' eyes -- and yes, one must be very careful when dealing with topics relating to Jews, Judaism and rabbis not to come across as playing around casually and comicly in the Nazis' Der Stürmer style (with Jews with hooked noses depicted and caricaturized like Captain Hook and other despicable cartoons) to hurt other editors' sensibilities, and therefore it's best and safe to stick to using WP:NPOV and simpler naming like "Problem with blue photo" or some such and not get into the murky ground of invoking smurf, or bugs bunny, or Alfred E. Neuman etc etc as "adjectives" for the subjects at hand. How about some maturity? IZAK (talk) 07:58, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

AN/I

Please stop reopening that topic on AN/I - content OR policy disputes have no place there unless something requires admin involvement. I really recommend you drop this, I am closing the thread again because it is cluttering the board (note; there is no requirement to be an admin to do such a thing) if you want to re-open it bring something new to the table. --Errant [tmorton166] (chat!) 12:49, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, I am having a hard time understanding you. IZAK appears to have made a good faith attempt to refactor a talk page header, the thread was then archived as inappropriate commentary by an admin. This has been upheld as generally correct behaviour if not handled brilliantly; I really recommend you just drop it, nothing good will come of continued disruption of AN/I. Non-admin closures of topics is generally accepted on AN/I - there is no requirement to be an admin to do so. (it is worth pointing out that WP:NOTCENSORED refers to content and not to talk page discussions where off topic commentary/discussion/ridicule is removed) --Errant [tmorton166] (chat!) 12:56, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There is absolutely no closing requirements such as those you demand in the AN/I thread. Of course you could open another thread to discuss whether non-admin "clerk" work is appropriate on AN/I (current consensus seems to be; it is fine). As the act of closing has no requirement for admin tools there seems no requirement for an admin to do it :) Just someone uninvolved. I refrained re-closing because another relatively uninvolved editor disputed the close & now I am involved. But you cannot impose closing requirements on a thread w/o consensus, in fact it seems pretty rude to do so --Errant [tmorton166] (chat!) 13:21, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Warning and request

Hi there Baseball Bugs. I am not sure what's bugging you, but you have veered into several violations of WP:CIVIL and WP:NPA. You have (at least) twice referred to me as a "nanny" which I strongly object to. We can disagree with each other without resorting to insults and name calling. I am not usually given to seeking outside help to deal with disruptive editors, but your refusal to tone down and stop escalating your war of words that is resulting in a violation of WP:NOTBATTLEGROUND as well, leaves me no choice but to warn you that further name-calling and insults on simple talk page dialogues or anywhere will not be tolerated and will force me to seek censure of your gratuitously insulting and hurtful language as I have tried to explain to you on the ANI and Rabbi Shach talk pages in greater detail. Please stop falling into the WP:SPIDERMAN syndrome !!! Thank you and looking forward to your calm cooperation. IZAK (talk) 07:41, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What "bugs" me specifically, and has for quite awhile now, is wikipedia's continual embracing of illustrations that look like they were taken by someone using a camera for the first time and hasn't quite got it figured out yet. As for the "nanny" thing, I'm commenting on your behavior, which is not a personal attack, as I don't know you from Adam. I'm no longer watching that page, so your timing is a bit off. The ones who like those ugly photos are now stuck with them. I don't know what the term "Spiderman syndrome" means, nor do I care to find out. And what I'm looking forward to is, with any luck, never crossing paths again. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots08:01, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have reverted your recent edit to WP:ANI because you modified another user's comment, claiming it was a personal attack. It was referring to the thread, not an individual, and was in no way an attack, let alone a personal one, and accusing others of making a personal attack could be construed as a personal attack itself. Please stop this behaviour before a block becomes necessary; you're going to attract plenty of admin attention making edits like these on WP:ANI. Indeed. I'm thinking that the answer to the original question is that an Anion is positively charged, a Cation is negatively charged, and an Onion has many layers of charges. Thanks for chiming in there. I don't get how to solve that problem, the entire process is getting annoying, so i'm going to try and take a few days off. Doc Quintana (talk) 20:28, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how either. The opposition to your consistent approach is befuddling. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:46, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Bugs, I'm not opposed to constistency, but he couldn't gain a consensus to change the status quo ("football" only on association football articles, full code on all other articles). The solution it to keep trying to gain a consesus for consistency, not make unilateral changes against consensus. You know as well as I do that changing long-entrenched consensus/status-quo/rules can take years, but being disruptive, as Doc has been, never helps the cause.
I'm still confused as to why he's changing the NFL articles instead of the Euro-footy ones, but he may well have tried that and been stymied. I do believe the full code should be shown in the Lead at first mention (once in the whole article, plus infobox if used there) for the sake of clarity, as we do have international readers (or US readers in the case of Euro-footie) who may not be all that bright or have trouble understanding English (we know both types well!) However, I'd support the other method too, providing it gains a consensus. So far, that hasn't happened, which is why I reverted Doc's edits on 3 NFL articles. (I didn't touch the others to avoid an appearance of stalking, while Doc has not avoided the appearance of stalking.) FWIW. - BilCat (talk) 05:32, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, it would be best to have the soccer club articles state "association football" or "soccer football" in the lead, since Americans reading it don't necessarily know that Manchester United doesn't play what "we" call football. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots06:24, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Red Sox vs. Cubs World Series Update

Oh well. If it ever happens, I'll still fly out there and buy you a beer.

At least my Sox had an excuse, because they were largely lame and halt all season. You don't win a pennant playing third-string catchers who hit in the 140s.

On the plus side, Clay Buchholz is a really good investment of $443,000 or so. PhGustaf (talk) 20:11, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Cubs and the BoSox are good examples of the cold hard fact that spending alone will not necessarily buy a championship or a playoff berth. Teams like Tampa and Minnesota demonstrate that you produce a winner without putting spending through the roof, but you also have to know what you're doing (as contrasted with, say, Pittsburgh or Washington or Baltimore). ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:17, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorting on multiple keys

Hi Bugs, I hope you don't mind me posting here in reply to your question at ANI, but it's probably off-topic there. The sorting algorithm used on Wikipedia is a stable sort, that is, it preserves the previous order of rows when a later sort has keys that are equal. What that means in practice is: say an actor appeared in 10 roles each year for 5 years; sorting on 'Role' would produce the obvious alphabetical order; but if you then sort on 'Year', you'd get a table sorted by year, but within each of the 5 years, the 10 roles would stay in alphabetical order. Hopefully that was what you meant. As for the utility of sorting a table of four rows – yeah, not terribly useful right now, but hopefully it is future-proof as time passes and the number of rows in the table increases. Plus, as you rightly observe, it's an example that can be used as a template for other articles. Happy Editing! --RexxS (talk) 00:12, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

...and knowing is half the battle. The other half is high-caliber gunplay, and much more fun. HalfShadow 01:58, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've changed the licensing on this image to cc-by-2.0, since that's what the original image was licensed. Since you applied a PD-self tag to the image, I've interpreted that as a statement of "my changes are in the public domain". Please remove that statement from the image description if it doesn't reflect your intentions. Nyttend (talk) 14:10, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You have the right to declare any license for the cropped image; even all-rights-reserved is legal, although of course not accepted here. If I remember rightly, it's disputed whether simple cropping like this is creative enough for copyright, but for safety's sake, you should add a licensing statement to self-cropped works. If you really don't think it's creative enough for copyright, I'd say that a PD release is best, because it ensures that you won't have any copyright that you don't want. Since we allow license modifications for newly-created images, I don't think that anyone would complain if you changed the tag to something CC licensed; therefore, feel free to change the license to cc-by or cc-by-sa if you want. Nyttend (talk) 16:39, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the confusion. Easiest question first: I would tag it as cc-by (because the original image is) and add a note of "My changes are in the public domain". It's best not to add a PD-self template, since that could be interpreted as "All of this image's authors have released their rights into the public domain". Nyttend (talk) 18:45, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
One request — once you've decided that you're happy with the way I left it or once you've decided on a different format, would you please edit that image description? Nutley, NJ, was one of many New York area cities in Jersey that Johnny Carson used to make fun of when his show was based in New York (he would later use Burbank as the butt of those types of jokes). I don't recall where I got the Orange joke from, but it wasn't Carson, as even he wouldn't stoop that low. It think someone said it on a radio show. You're right, it's bad, but it also assumes some geographic knowledge on behalf of the local audience. As with the Benny show and its recurring joke about a train leaving for Anaheim, Azusa and Cucamonga; which sounded like funny names to the national audience, with the added realization by the L.A. audience that there was no such train. Likewise, as a native New Yorker once told me, Bayonne is about the last place you would expect to find a classy tailor, or a classy anything. The only other reference to Bayonne I can think of is a boxer, Chuck Wepner, who was called "The Bayonne Bleeder". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots23:33, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Kuralt discussion

Hi Bugs. I'm putting this on your talk page rather than ANI because I don't consider it anyone else's business. I have a lot of respect for you as an editor, and as always I take your opinions, whether I agree or disagree, under advisement. I have no problems with your opinions in the Kuralt discussion, including the ones critical of me or my opinions. I would caution you about your use of language, such as "lazy", however; not just in this instance, but in any discussion. It's not a serious problem for me; certainly not a situation that I see as requiring any admin action, nor one in which I feel you need to defend yourself to me. By no means is this a "warning", just an honest word to a fellow editor. It's what I would want you to do if I used such a word in reference to an editor. That being said, thanks for your comments, at the Kuralt discussion and elsewhere. I usually learn something helpful when I read them. Cresix (talk) 14:48, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

When I see that something needs sourcing, I don't post a flag and expect someone else to do it; I try to do something about it myself. That's the point I'm making there. Along with the fact that there is no possibility of wikipedia being taken to court over the Kuralt "other woman" story. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots14:51, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your position, and I appreciate your comments. My only reason for messaging you (beyond my thanks) is to express a bit of concern about the "lazy" comment. But as far as I'm concerned, now that I've done so, that's water under the bridge. Happy editing! Cresix (talk) 14:59, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Blood from arteries

As per your answer on the ref desk (sorry I don't know how to link to specific ref desk questions!) I was curious why would blood be drawn from arteries rather than veins? Not a request for medical advice, I have no intention of having needles sticking into my arteries :-) Spoonfulsofsheep (talk) 00:07, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Blood's usually drawn from arteries (or arterioles) since it's under pressure; you simply sitck in the needle and the syringe fills up due to the pressure. Since blood in veins is under less pressure, you'd likely need to manually extract it, and would essentially be artificially decreasing its pressure further. It'd be slower, and more tricky to actually extract the blood.GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 00:10, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
NO! Typically blood is taken from veins. It's much less painful and it clots faster. And there is sufficient pressure to quickly fill the vial. The only time they pull from arteries is if they have a specific need to, such as testing the oxygenation level (which they may be able to do by machine now, for all I know). ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots00:50, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
...uh? Not the last time I had blood taken. I guess this is why wikipedia doesn't give medical advice... GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 08:21, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure? Where do you get your blood taken? Here in the US, they always look for a vein near the surface, typically at the crook of your arm. I've had arterial blood taken from there, too, and the needle goes much deeper, hence the pain and the need for pressure to make it clot. Arterial blood looks quite different: much thinner, much brighter red. Blood from a vein looks thicker and a deeper red. With the vein, once they pull the needle out they apply a little pressure and tape some cotton onto it and there's usually only a spot of blood when you peel it off later. They also tell you not to do any heavy lifting for an hour, to give the vein a chance to reach the proper healing point. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots09:45, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not 100% sure, but I thought I had heard it's usually from an arteriole and the explanation seemed to make sense; probably my bad. I may be thinking of blood donations where they take an entire pint. Probably my bad since you seem pretty sure about it; I'm going on what I think I heard in a lecture two years ago. Hope I haven't confused the issue too much. GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 10:40, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
When they take a pint of blood from me, they take it from that same vein in my left arm (I being right-handed). There's more blood pressure in a vein than you might think. No question, however, that neither of us should be practicing medicine without a license. Or a licence. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots10:47, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't often get blood tests thankfully; I think this is a pretty good indication that I'm right to choose a career in laboratory research rather than patient care ;) GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 10:49, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Bugs. I noticed the Tom Lehrer quote that you used in the thread that WikiDao linked above. He was one of the main reasons that I tuned into That Was the Week that Was during its brief run on TV back in the 60's. A CD/DVD set came out awhile ago with a video of him performing before a live audience in Norway. It was a bit surreal as the songs were as fun as ever but the audience wasn't laughing as much as I was. Here [20] is a link to a fun animation that someone has created to his singing of The Elements song. If you haven't already seen it I hope it brings a chuckle to your day. Regarding Anti-Male Language

(Moving this discussion from the Lew Loot talk page) When my children do naughty things, I criticize their behaviors, not them as humans. When men do bad things, their behaviors should be criticized, not their gender. Masculinity is not Bad, in and of itself. It is simply a state in which roughly half of the human race finds itself. And, FWIW, it is entirely possible to be anti-*group* while being a member of *group*. I'm not meaning to be argumentative here; just explaining my position. Judith Reisman

Hello Baseball Bugs. Noticed you reverted my cross-referencing of Judith Reisman at the Kinsey article, with the comment "undue weight." Did you mean that mentioning Reisman in the Kinsey article gave Reisman undue weight? If so, is there any, more appropriate place for her to just be mentioned in that article? A "See also" section with crosslinks, perhaps? Just looking for some thoughts on this -- she has been a big critic of Kinsey, dedicating much of her professional life and scholarship to that subject. If she doesn't even deserve a mention in the Kinsey article, why? Kinsey certainly is crosslinked in her article. Thanks for your thoughts on this issue. Citizen of New York

I blocked him/her but it seems that Wikipedia in general is welcoming POV pushers with open arms these days.

I've come across numerous paid editors who are editing on behalf of political candidates, and there's the whole Reisman agenda nonsense. I've also interacted with folks who can be hired to manipulate social media in my professional role. This IMHO is the biggest threat to the legitimacy of this encyclopedia. It's a shame the more vocal folks around here don't get that. I'm glad you do, but I think we're fighting a losing battle. Toddst1 (talk) 14:15, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As with the lengthy war it can take for everyone to finally "get it" about a perennially abusive but "contributing" user, this trend will continue until the stubborn ones realize that a fundamental change in approach is needed. The "anyone can edit" axiom is the source of more headaches than benefits, at this point, but many editors aren't seeing that yet. Or else they don't care, which is sad. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots14:33, 21 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Query

Two items, the second of which is most important.

1. I have absolutely no prior knowledge (and have no idea if I would have any interest) in the Reisman article. But if you think it would help, I'll start editing it, just so that I'm familiar with what is happening if issues arise.

2. If memory serves, we had a prediction contest at the baseball page ... either this past world series, or at the earliest the prior year. If memory serves, I won ... but of course my memory would be clearer on that point. Shall we do it again this year?

Bugs, I used to like you. Toddst1 (talk) 16:33, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's a tough call, as both of these teams have been playing over their heads this year. In the 2001 Series, Curt Schilling had 3 starts, while Randy Johnson had 2, plus a vital relief appearance in Game 7. That's why I said "starts and/or appearances". Lee might get only two starts, but if it goes to Game 7, "everyone is available". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots17:10, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Playing over their heads is an excellent description, and I agree 100%. That doesn't stop me from bleeding orange though. :) Toddst1 (talk) 17:17, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There was a recent S.I. article about the Giants' star-crossed path since 1954. The Dodgers have had great success since moving to L.A., while the Giants were stuck in Candlestick for decades, have never quite had enough to go all the way and came within a hair or two of moving elsewhere. Maybe they will finally get over the hump this year. But then there's the Texas Rangers, who started out with a curse, i.e. being the Washington Senators, and had hardly hit a loud foul in the post-season until this year. So I can't be against either team, but only one can win, and either way it will make a great story. For both teams, it already has so far. :) P.S. When I was a kid rooting for the lowly Cubs, the Giants were my second-favorite NL team: Mays, McCovey, etc. Remember how the kids would come down from the little bleacher sections in right-center and stand behind the fence when Stretch came to bat? Or maybe that was before your time? :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots17:26, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I make no claims in regards to the sanity (or lack thereof) of Schilling. :) Yes, I do recall that Peanuts strip, as clearly as I recall seeing McCovey hit that screaming liner and going from "Yes!" to "No!" in a split second when Bobby Richardson caught it. One of my favorite Casey Stengel stories was his comment about Richardson: "He doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, doesn't chase women, and he still can't hit .250!" ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots18:42, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Somewhere around I may still have a "Croix de Candlestick" button. These were issued to fans who stayed to the end of extra-inning night games. At the time a friend had front-row tickets on the first-base line, just to the right of the Giant's dugout. Frank Robinson was manager then, which puts the date at 1981-4. Trust me, nobody can glower better than Frank Robinson. Fortunately, these tickets came with passes to the Stadium Club, which had heat, drinks, and big teevees, which made the game more survivable.

Gotta say that Texas is the favorite. But, hey, any series without the Yankees in it is off to a good start. If I live long enough, I will buy Bugs a beer when the Red Sox finally meet the Cubs in October. PhGustaf (talk) 19:18, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reminds me of my favorite game ever - in 2003 in Tampa Bay. My first game there and it wound up being the longest game in Rays history. Actually they were still called the Devil Rays then and were still losing 100 games per year. By the 16th or so inning - around 1am I guess - I had relocated right behind home plate because the stands contained nothing but me and a few hundred rowdy Red Sox fans, screaming at the umps on every pitch. Good times.... Wknight94 talk 19:41, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(ec)Just as long as it's Old Style. :) Regarding F. Robby, don't I know it. I was at a White Sox game during the time when he was manager and part-time player for the Cleveland Indians, which isolates it to the 1975-77 range. He had gotten into an argument with the home plate ump. Very soon after, he put himself in as a pinch-hitter, for the express purpose of continuing the argument. With that distraction going on, he struck out, and of course the Comiskey Park crowd roared. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:43, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That must've been when the Indians had extra terrible looking uniforms. The ugliest baseball card I own is of Robinson framed in neon purple and pink. http://www.chuckscards.com/1975Topps/75IndiansStars.JPG. Wknight94 talk 19:59, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Aha, from the days when the Indians tried to be PC by sending Chief Wahoo back to the reservation for awhile. It may have improved their politics but it didn't help their wins and losses. Many teams experimented with uniforms in the 70s. The Orioles tried a bright red shirt for awhile, and someone said it made Boog Powell look like a gigantic blood clot. Now, if you had that neon purple and pink uniform on Don Mossi, you would have had a critical mass of ugliness that might have cause a tear in the space-time continuum. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:13, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Bugs, do you have a reliable source that says the red shirt made Boog Powell look like a gigantic blood clot? If not, let's not be taking the name of an Orioles player in vain here. Thanks.Malke 2010 (talk) 04:13, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's just something I recall from the time. Be aware that the O's were my favorite American League team at the time. It's shameful what's happened to them under the Angelos ownership. They've become what they once were: The St. Louis Browns. Ugh. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots04:41, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Googling ["boog powell" "blood clot"] brought up many references, including a Google books item in which Powell himself talks about it - except I had it slightly wrong: it was after he was sent to ... guess who .... Cleveland. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots04:49, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You kids don't remember Charlie O's 70s doings in Oakland. Consider orange baseballs. Consider white skates in the NHL. Consider bonuses for players with moustaches. Consider what Rollie Fingers looked like back then[22]. PhGustaf (talk) 08:06, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I can believe the orange baseballs but white skates in the NHL? Hey Bugs, ever have one of Boog's barbecue sandwiches at Camden Yards?Malke 2010 (talk) 12:26, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yum, Boog's BBQ, and Maryland crab cakes. Maybe not within 5 minutes of each other, though. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots07:36, 29 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The California Golden Seals indeed wore white skates for a while. It didn't really matter, though, since their play had the fans laughing anyway. I once saw a Bruin/Seals game from the very short time the Bruins had both Bobby Orr and Brad Park on the ice, and it wasn't a good night for the Seals.

More on topic, the Giants are going to have six Giant HoF players tossing out first pitches tonight, including Monte Irvin. Would have guessed he was dead, but he's still cranking on at 91. PhGustaf (talk) 22:42, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I remember the Seals. I think I actually saw them play a game in St. Louis one time. I had forgotten what happened to them. They became the Cleveland Barons, who later merged with the Minnesota North Stars, who later moved to Dallas to became just the Stars. The Seals left a trail of red in their lengthy wake - partly blood, mostly ink.
As regards Monte Irvin, I'm guessing the Cubs will be watching closely tonight. Anything to shore up the bullpen. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots23:11, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bugs, thanks for the explanation. The explanation you gave pointed out the superstitious part of baseball that wasn't apparent from the entry on the Hank Aaron page. I saw you made this comment at the RD talk page to 86.164.144.120, remarking that they seemed "knowledgeable for someone with 3 edits so far".
So, I thought you might want to know that we have someone who is definitely a long-time contributor who appears regularly at the RD from different IPs which seem to geolocate generally to London. And it was User:JackofOz who recently made the "long-time contributor" call (see User talk:86.166.42.171). WP attitude towards Islam

I read you posts on at ANI re: the fiction tagging of Bible related articles and I wanted to point you to Talk:Muhammad/images. If you check out some of the current postings there and especially the archive, there are some angry/upset Muslim pleadings that go unheeded. I don't think anyone here is scared of reprisals, from militant activists and I also think that WP isn't a pasture for anyone's sacred cow. That thread at ANI was closed before I got a chance to respond but I reject the characterization of the Bible as fiction. Regardless of one's views on the historical reliability of the Bible, it isn't presented, nor was it ever intended to be deceptive regarding its truth claims. Regards--184.196.184.86 (talk) 08:12, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn't realize that I wasn't logged in. Cheers --Adam in MO Talk 08:14, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm well aware of the ongoing dispute over depictions of Muhammad, and I don't have an issue with the way wikipedia in general operates regarding religions. The issue I have is with certain editors zeroing in on Judeo/Christian articles as if they were some special case that was in desperate need of being labeled as "fictional". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots13:55, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I noticed the thread being referred to here in passing, and baseball, I'd urge you to to be careful what you say about islam, not because they might add you to some secret list of assassination targets, but because suggesting that criticising christianity is safe whereas criticising islam will have you added to the aforementioned list could be considered pretty offensive to muslim users and we do have a policy on attacking groups of people. I apologise if I have misappraised your comment, however, since I only briefly saw the thread after its archival. If that's not were you were implying, feel free to ignore me. GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 14:01, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've got no issues with Islam. My issue is with hypocritical users who target Judeo/Christian articles with one standard while not raising those issues with articles on Islam or elsewhere. In fact, their approach could be considered subtly anti-Islamic, in the sense that they appear to not consider Islam to be "important enough" to target with their "fictional" stamp - that Judeo/Christianity is the "real thing", hence there's some urgency to label it as "fictional". However, as their arguments and the responses demonstrate, they are too ignorant about the subject to be labeling it or anything else as "fictional". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots14:09, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I have no real opinion one way or another as far as that goes, though I suspect that the users labelling the bible as fictional were just attempting to make a WP:POINT; I doubt there was any specific avoidance of islamic articles involved. As an atheist myself, however, I have to disagree with labelling religious texts as "fictional", since they were never intended to be a work of fiction. I suspect that those willing to go against consensus to push a POV such as this are beyond such reasoning, though. GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 14:15, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No argument there. I was raised Christian, and while some consider me a "practical atheist", I think religions should be honored, as they are an important part of most every country's culture, and none of us has a monopoly on the truth. The Muslims I've known and worked with are fundamentally no different from you and me; and they talk about Muhammad with the same reverence that Christians talk about Jesus. That doesn't mean I buy into the "hocus-pocus" aspect of religions - but I don't fully discount it either, because "I wasn't there". ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots14:38, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK, you're probably asking about the diff for when the Ganga vs. Ganges comment was added to the article titles guideline. I expanded the history list to 500 from the default of 50 and went back to a point where the edit wasn't there. Then I took kind of a "binary search" approach to narrowing down when it was posted. Well, I think I can confirm that she existed, since a publisher has taken the trouble to reprint one of her novels. However, all I actually know about her is what is written in the article. Since we don't know her birth or death dates, it's difficult to link her to a "year in literature" article either. I suppose I must have been having one of those days when I was picking up the details of 18th and 19th century novelists and trying to fill in the gaps. Anyway, there was actually a link to her from 1815 in literature but it seems like the necessary disambiguation was missing, so I've fixed that now. Deb (talk) 15:02, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

World Series changes

Hi, you took away my qote from the 'Atlanta Journal-Constitution' which was itself quoting "Doug Pappas, an attorney who was the chairman of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) Business of Baseball Committee. He wrote, “But the Spalding Guide -- which, after all, was published by one of the world's largest sporting goods companies, with a vested interest in bringing baseball to other lands -- had grander ambitions.” He wrote that by 1890, the Spalding Guide was explaining that “[t]he base ball championship of the United States necessarily includes that of the entire world, though the time will come when Australia will step in as a rival, and after that country will come Great Britain; but all that is for the future.” This is from Lori Johnston who is a freelancer published many times by the AJC...... could you tell me why this is not reliable? thanks, Jabberwock359 (talk) 18:53, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not too worried about the exact date... let it be 1884, if you know that's right. More importantly, how do you know that the Spalding Guide quote is incorrect? I tried to track down a guide from www.gutenberg but could not find the exact year. Do you have one or shall I get in touch with Lori Johnston and check her sources? ta, Jabberwock359 (talk) 19:12, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Since the Project is so good at lists, what about if we were to have a list of the most overwhelming rejections of AfDs? Hmmmm. Good point. May not be easily bot-able. I guess we could have a bot report the AfDs with the most editor entries ... but by their nature that would be a hassle. How about this -- we could have editors report them to a list! That is what we do with our "articles on wikipedia reported in the press" list, so there is a precedent.--Epeefleche (talk) 04:54, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edit warring

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on List of common misconceptions. Users who edit disruptively or refuse to collaborate with others may be blocked if they continue. In particular the three-revert rule states that making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24-hour period is almost always grounds for an immediate block. If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the talk page to discuss controversial changes. Work towards wording and content that gains consensus among editors. If unsuccessful, then do not edit war even if you believe you are right. Post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If edit warring continues, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. TheThomas (talk) 00:46, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bugs, I've got the greatest respect for you as an editor, but on this particular point I'm afraid that you're not exactly correct. It may sound odd, but technically (in terms of Cladistics), birds are indeed "living dinosaurs" rather than modern descendants of ancient dinos. This point is actually fairly well explained in our Dinosaur article: "Consequently, in modern classification systems, birds are considered a type of dinosaur — the only group of which that survives until the present day.[1][2]" That actually appears in the first paragraph of the article, so it's easy to check on if you're curious about the refs. It may seem counter-intuitive because we are used to thinking of dinosaurs as critters that went extinct long ago, but this definitely represents the mainstream science view. Anyway, I hope this helps. Happy editing, Doc Tropics 01:32, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The origin of birds article begins by saying it's a contentious issue. But the misconceptions article could be reworded to make the matter clearer. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots02:18, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I had no idea how much discussion this subject had generated, I'm still reading to catch up! Part of the problem seems to be that the two items in the List were written separately, but are so closely related that they need to be addressed in relation to each other, as well as in the context of "technical linguistics" vs. "common usages". I don't have any concrete suggestions yet, but the discussion is fun to watch  :) Doc Tropics 23:59, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This is an offshoot of the item that the OP here keeps edit-warring over. It would be nice if he would participate in the dinosaur discussion, but he seems to have disappeared again. I have to say the dinosaur discussion has been educational for me. The pivotal point seems to be that "dinosaur" used to mean one thing, and has since been extended to a broader umbrella, but the original definition is what the public thinks of when "dinosaur" is mentioned. And frankly, the scientists shouldn't have broadened that umbrella - they should have come up with a different term, and this kind of thing could be avoided. (It's like the ones who insist on calling Brontosaurus by the name "Apatasaurus", even though all of us in the Hoi Polloi "know" that it's a Brontosaurus.) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots00:53, 3 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Revert? What?

I feel like your blind revert of my edit to List of United States presidential nicknames highlights what I don't like about most "Wikipedians" and their revert-happiness. I did a constructive edit to the formatting because the page looked wrong. Trying to act in good faith I also added another nickname, which was very common in political circles in its heyday, that I felt made the article lacking. Because you didn't like the nickname, you also reverted my helpful formatting change. Don't be so careless with your edits.

Your argument against the nickname ("not common enough") is also pretty absurd. As I say it was incredibly common in DC circles at one time. The article is full of nicknames that are much more obscure than that one. Ask folks who follow politics what "Shrub" means, then ask them who "The Careful Dutchman" was. Maybe by your logic we should remove these other obscure references. 174.31.227.129 (talk) 06:06, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dealing with bad faith?

Hi Baseball Bugs, I know that you're one of the longest serving users here, and that you've often spent some time around ANI, so I figured that you'd be able to help me with a question I have about dealing with bad faith. There was a lengthy discussion going on at Talk:U2 which was consistently being disrupted by one editor who constantly threw out accusations of bias and bad faith. The editor was repeatedly asked to stop doing so by numerous others, both on Talk:U2 and their user talk page, but the behaviour persisted. Since the requests were obviously being ignored, what is the next step that should be taken to try and get this user to discuss things more co-operatively and civilly in future? I'm unfamiliar with what to do in this sort of circumstance. Cheers, Melicans (talk, contributions) 18:20, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know much about that situation and would have to study the matter. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:04, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Don't waste your brain cells. That dispute is even more WP:LAME than the Jimbo DOB dispute. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 19:29, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Last I looked, the debate was over whether U2 is an "Irish" band. Folks get into battles over the weirdest petty details here.
Note that I said "I would have to..." rather than "I will..." :) Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:34, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm working on the article for Michael Jackson's new album and there's a lame dispute over whether the album should be listed as a studio or a compilation album. They've been edit-warring (on and off) for the past 2 weeks, an RfC was opened, one editor was blocked and now the article is locked for two weeks. Some people just need to get a life. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 19:39, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Is the album all new (i.e. previously unreleased) material, or does it have some previously released stuff also? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:06, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It has one song that was previously released. I'm not sure if it's the same version of the song. Anyway, it doesn't matter. I was just venting. :) A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 20:40, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Was that one song also produced in a studio? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:53, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Stating that the band is from Dublin seems to be a reasonable compromise if it chills the lame edit war. Maybe if they had called themselves "The Irish Band" instead of "U2", and played the Clancy Brothers' songbook instead of rock, there wouldn't be a debate. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots20:31, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it looks like consensus has been reached about the change. Thanks. The question was more about what steps can be taken to prevent the user from issuing further bad faith in the future. Melicans (talk, contributions) 02:40, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There has been some discussion at ANI as you know. The bad faith part gets tricky. Editors can be totally good-faith and be totally wrong in their approach. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots02:53, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RfC? Jimbo's birthday

Hey Bugs,

I've noticed you've starting getting into the whole Jimbo birthday debate. I want to launch an RfC for the issue, but am having difficulty getting support for the idea. Do you think you could take a look at User:NickCT/sandbox and tell me whether you think this is a good idea.

On another note, I largely agree with the POV you espouse regarding this issue. I think an RfC might finally bring us some closure on this point.

Thanks, NickCT (talk) 14:12, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just can't believe so much energy is being expended on whether someone was born on the 7th or 8th. It's a very pointy discussion, in my opinion. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:05, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
NickCT: I don't think you need to get anyone's support to file an RfC. You can do so on your own accord. A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 19:08, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's correct. It's not like a request for mediation or an RFC/U. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:21, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've tried to watch the Three Stooges a few times. While maybe I understand their skill at having taken Mack Sennett a step further in all that middle school slapstick, they bore me so, I can't make it through even one of their shorts. Gwen Gale (talk) 22:01, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Their really early ones are the best. Their films were only 20 minutes long and were never intended to be great art. Maybe the appeal of a Laurel and Hardy, who did plenty of slapstick themselves, is that their work is at least a little more subtle and kind of endearing in a way. With the Stooges, it was just mindless slapstick. But they did it very well. Their early films show that their act was already established and polished, from years of stage work. I would recommend either Punch Drunks or Men in Black if you had to see one. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:03, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've never been able to figure out the in-line citation stuff, but I know there are others that can do it and they will usually eventually fix it. I was tipped off to that interesting story by ESPN's Outside the Lines yesterday, which went into much more detail about how ABC Monday Night Football happened to scoop everyone, but I thought that was too much info for the article. Just an extra sentence or two seemed sufficient. The most interesting part is that Cosell didn't want to do it, but he was urged to do so by boothmates Frank Gifford and Don Meredith (who, coincidentally, died yesterday). ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:08, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Meridith was one of three reasons I always watched MNF with the sound off, back in the day.--Wehwalt (talk) 03:37, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Of the three, I thought Gifford was the best one, as he could call a game competently and didn't try to be a comedian or a pomposity. Cosell, in particular, was a real piece of work. But undeniably an interesting character. Someone once said, "He sounds like an imitation of himself." Re-reading that article, I had forgotten how many feuds he had managed to get himself into. But he was also very smart. When everyone was criticizing Cassius Clay for changing his name and religion, Cosell immediately started calling him Muhammed Ali, which I'm sure helped gain him access to the champ. He knew which side of his bread was buttered. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots04:07, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So, what's your call on the Pats vs. Bears game Sunday? The line is Pats -3 and an o/u of less than the Pats scored last time. I'm going to respond to your comments on this on the various talk pages. While your statements could be a valid critique of his content, they can't be taken into consideration as it's all OR from a Wikipedian. He has the journal article, and the RS noticeboard post concluded that his article is an RS, so in order to "respond" to his statements one has to cite another article that responds to his article.

Also the talk page discussions are supposed to be about whether his opinions are "Undue weight" and that differs from article to article, so replies need to be crafted to consider the particular article in question. WhisperToMe (talk) 22:26, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fringe views, with roughly the same verifiability as the Flat Earth. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:42, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Responded at Yogi Bear in more detail, but the flat earth theory is different because there are a mountain of sources saying "the earth is round" overwhelmingly against flat earth, and a mountain of sources describing other aspects of earth. That's why flat earth is excluded. Relative to "earth," "flat earth" is unimportant. For example, in the case of Yogi Bear, there is one journal article (Dennis) and one response article (Goodman) - Looking at content and the other sources, I see no other secondary analysis of the character (As in no "reception" section). To make the case "this is as relevant to Yogi as flat earth is to earth" you need to amass enough sources to get the article to a Homer Simpson-like level where material will have to be excluded as it's too much detail. In the case of Earth, flat earth theory gets its own article to deal with that.
WhisperToMe (talk) 22:57, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Fringe theories don't belong. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:59, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am aware of that general guideline; IMO, because most of those articles do not have an abundance of scholarship, it is not possible to have a "fringe theory" on any of them, and any reliably published academic opinion will get in. You can argue that such a thing could be a "fringe theory" for an FA article like The Simpsons. Whether something is "fringe" or not is an article by article thing, so that's determined on the talk page, and wide community consensus would be determined by an RFC on each article. WhisperToMe (talk) 23:08, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
One guy has invented that nonsense. That's about as fringe as it gets. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots23:23, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
IMO, just because the view is in one person's peer-reviewed journal doesn't necessarily mean it's "fringe." The question is whether the view is important in relation to other views and determining what the general mainstream opinion is. As said above, without a significant scholarly base it's not possible to label a view as fringe. However I have an idea on how this could be resolved:
I think the way to solve this is to make a post at Wikipedia:Fringe theories/Noticeboard - If you want, I can make the post, or if you want, you can make it. It's up to you.

Hi Bugs. A few moons ago I remember a discussion here about the Marx Bros and Margaret Dumont. I wanted to let you know about a new book by Roy Blount, Jr. entitled Hail, Hail, Euphoria!: Presenting the Marx Brothers in Duck Soup, the Greatest War Movie Ever Made. I picked it up this morning and am already halfway through it. I am enjoying it tremendously and have laughed out loud more than once. Though it is a slim book (149 pages) it seems to have more info than scholarly texts twice the size. Bugs Bunny even gets a mention at one point! Might be worth your time if you are interested. Can you help?

I've been thinking about multiple universes on the basis of some statements made in accordance with hindu mythology...And to me, it appears that these postulates must be true....of course, my intention is to provide a link between Philosophy and science...

I hope that you know about myths...about the position of planets influencing the nature and fate of human...
I have tried to provide scientific explanation for this...and my theory is....

Each body exerts a gravitational force on the other...Now, for example, Jupiter and the earth are rotating around the sun.... Jupiter exerts a gravitational force on u..At the same time, sun also exerts a force on u....these forces now disturb your energy field (possibly, the energy fields created by the matter waves u emit)....Thus, your energy gets changed due to the interference of these energies....Thus, your energy changes unknowingly (without your conscience)...Thus, Ur thoughts...which also are a resultant of ur energy variations...(My hypothesis is that..Thoughts arise when our energy levels are changed due to the influence of another body)..will also change...so, correspondingly, ur deeds will change...

Coming to fate or luck...Ur energy will have an influence on others too...Some others energy fields get disturbed...accordingly, that person might begin to like or dislike u..(I believe this is the scientific reason for love, affection or what ever it may be)..

Now, when u go to perform an act, (Every work u do is just a modification of energy field)...your changing energy will also influence the work or ur task's energy field....thus, creating a negative or positive effect...means, suppose ur energy (it might be silly reasoning but dont laugh ok, coz i'm just trying my best) is in some sort of destructive interfernce with ur task's energy; then, that wud create a negative effect type of b thing...thus barricading ur effort to break the energy..or acheive that energy or emit that energy....(If u r going to do any task, it is nothing but breaking into the regions of the energy)....

Please help me in refining my thoughts. Ofcourse, I'm just a beginner. I have just started to read about cosmology, So I dont know much. Kindly answer me and dont mock me because I'm just an amateur. — 194.80.246.1 (talk) 08:35, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You lost me at the bakery. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots18:54, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, all of the above is entirely reasonable - it is obvious that the gravity field of Jupiter and electromagnetic radiation emitted by the Sun both do affect my task to visit the bakery. It's just that one affects me a significant amount (by warming me up sufficiently that I can feel it), and the other affects me an insigificant amount.
Two suggestions occur to me, though. First, try to use ellipsis ("...") less. If there is something that goes in that "..." space, then each time, try to state what it is, rather than just using the ellipsis to suggest that there's something missing and you want the reader to try to guess what it is.
Second, any theory or discussion becomes much more credible if it is phrased in terms of named scientific phenomena for which there are already ample scientific observations and data. For example, "Jupiter exerts a gravitational force on u" is good - we know this to be true and we have a wealth of data suggesting that Jupiter has a gravitational field. "ur task's energy field" is not so good - there are no scientific data, or even theories, to suggest that a "task" (an abstract concept) has an "energy field".
Alternatively, you could embark on scientific enquiry yourself. Produce a theory as to how and why a task has an energy field, including an explanation of how such an energy field relates to different sorts of forces we already know about (gravity, for example). Then, describe an experiment which would prove this theory correct, including what observational results you would expect if a task does have an energy field, and if it does not. Then, perform the experiment!

Hmmm

Maybe I should have asked this less than heard u this question - but here goes. I just watched this movie with Hugh Grant and others playing the parts of young undergraduates at Oxford University in England during the British Edwardian era. I thought the film and story somewhat typical of the portrayed upper class of the time and period and that it was well acted and produced. What puzzles me about this kind of film is how young men (the actors), clearly in their sexual prime, can kiss, cuddle, be affectionate to each other, even get into bed with each other, simulate gay sex, and not become aroused, even if they are not actually gay or curious. By the way, I couldn't care less either way - it's their business, not mine. The biographies of the principals suggest that they are mostly happily married with kids, so how do they control their natural urges doing those erotic scenes? Or do they genuinely not have any natural urges towards other men and can act those scenes totally devoid of any arousal? And I suppose the same goes for women/women scenarios too? Question

What have I done to you that you act like I was a vandal on Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Refstyle changes proposal? I mean, do you think I am stupid, suggesting an "edit war trap" for me? I've been contributing to Wikipedia for more than 6 years. I accumulated almost 100,000 edits on the English Wikipedia, mostly typofixing with AWB. But also, I'm a long time member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Citation cleanup. The whole purpose of that project is fixing incomplete citations. For instance, I did [33], [34], [35], [36], [37], [38], [39], and [40]. In each of these examples, I edited the particular article for the first time. In each of these articles, I changed the citation style (how can you cleanup citations w/out changing the style, anyway).

For the past 6 years, I considered those kinds of edits very helpful to Wikipedia. A lot of people appreciated what I've been doing [41], [42]. But it seems like I'm no longer allowed to do that. I love Wikipedia, and I always loved doing that gnomic work, fixing minor errors without further ado, and without having to request anyone's a priori permission to implement them. So, could you please tell me what I'm supposed to do? Am I supposed to start a discussion on each articles talk page first, where ever I just want to add an ISBN number, implement a citation template, or add columns to the reflist for usability? Is this how improving Wikipedia is supposed to be done? —bender235 (talk) 21:53, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Don't take it personally. I have been known to challenge what I consider to be "busy work" edits that have no apparent real value to the reader. I did so just a few days ago, in fact, in regard to someone who was taking spaces out of infoboxes on the theory that it would improve performance. Given that, I invite you to post 2 blocks of text below - one of them your way, one of them the other way, so that I can judge whether it matters or not. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:00, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what you want me to do. This is not about two versions of texts. This is about users having the right to edit every Wikipedia article, w/out asking anyone for permission first. I mean, I always followed WP:BRD. I made that citation cleanup, and waited. Most of the time people liked it, and it stuck. In some case they reverted it, but I'm fine with that, too. In fact, when I was making one of those minor edits to one of User:CBM's articles Feynman point, he reverted it, and I started a discussion on the articles talk page. The dispute was settled per WP:CITEHOW (keeping the old style rather than using the new one). I'm totally fine with that.
But now, even editing the article in the first place is considered a policy violation by CBM. And an astonishing amount of people agree with him (including you). I still don't realize how this has happened. —bender235 (talk) 22:10, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's because you're making mass changes without discussion or consensus, basically abusing the BRD principle. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:14, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not really sure where to draw the line between normal and "mass changes". I mean, of course I edit a lot of articles per day, mostly fixing typo, but on some of them I also change the reference list style. Looking into my contributions log, I see that I've made this kind of edit eight times within my last 500 edits (past four days). I don't know if that is a "mass change". Is it? —bender235 (talk) 22:20, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
When consensus is against what you're doing, then stop doing it and find something else to do. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:27, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I understand edits should always follow accepted guidelines. But where and when was the consensus established that reference lists are not allowed to be displayed with columns? I never found such a prohibition on WP:MOS or anywhere else. If a majority of Wikipedia users actually decided not to use {{Reflist|colwidth=...}}, then why is this feature available in the first place? —bender235 (talk) 22:34, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Explain to me, in one reasonably-lengthed sentence, how the changes you're advocating improve wikipedia for the readers. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:35, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Using "colwidth" allows the browser to automatically choose the number of columns based on the width of the web browser. Which means, someone who's visiting Wikipedia on a large monitor sees more columns (likely 3-4) than someone who's visiting on a netbook, tablet or even smaller device. The latter only see 1-2 columns. To implement this feature was part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Usability, simply to improve accessibility. I never thought this would put me in that much trouble. —bender235 (talk) 22:42, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Post some before-and-after examples below, please. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:46, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Usability#Ideal column width for references. —bender235 (talk) 22:48, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So, what gnomic work can I do from now on w/out risking a block? Obviously ref style changes are a no-no, and so are citation cleanups. How can I do those minor improvement from now on? —bender235 (talk) 23:31, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think you understand checkuser

Alison is a good friend of mine. But her checkuser powers do not include clairvoyance. There's no way on earth she could have known it was ME, TFM, since I was using the ip for the first time and never intend to use it again. There was no technical way to link that ip to my main account. Stop insisting it was an imposter; that's not what she said... She merely indicated that the ip address was not related to my main account which is true. -tfm — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vinegar and Water (talkcontribs)

LouisPhilippeCharles

See User talk:Baseball Bugs/Archive011. This edit by User talk:LouisPhilippeCharles is typical of what (s)he does. Previously this was being done for the whole page content of blocks etc. Usually when a user does this it is not a problem because an administrator can easily look at the history of the page and recreate the section or the missing information. But when incidents are buried in dozens of other edits (used to develop an article) it becomes tiresome and difficult for an administrator to look through the edit history.

Now in some cases this might be tolerable, but user:LouisPhilippeCharles is a repeat offender:

  • copy pasting pages to reverse and negate WP:RM requests, causing copyright issues that (s)he has not offered to help clean up (see Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations / LouisPhilippeCharles).
  • controversial moving pages without trying to gain consensus, and double moving some of them meaning that ordinary users can not move them back.
  • breaches of 3RR
  • Sockpuppetry

So I think that deleting and burying administrator (and other users) comments under a snow of other edits is needlessly time consuming and disruptive for other editors who are tying to sort out the various messes that LouisPhilippeCharles has created. Now that I have given him/her a process by which (s)he can do development on the page, but save it on his/her PC there is really no reason to cause further disruption for other users by placing large numbers of edits into the edit history of the talk page and there by making it difficult for other editors to see easily inter-editor communications with an editor who has a history of disruptive editing. -- PBS (talk) 10:42, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Africa socks

After I saw DF had been blocked, I went back and looked again at the whole AfricaTruther thing from last night and I still can't figure out what was going on there. Was it a joe job against DF? Were they socks of Kiwi supporting DF? Were they Kiwi impostors instead of DF impostors? Were they socks of DF pretending to be socks of Kiwi? (DF seemed upset that people didn't "get" the socks were similar to Kiwi.) It's like a bad mystery novel. And I missed it all dicking around with copyright stuff on old images. This christmas I had a long, heartfelt talk with "Sandy Georgia" and some other editors on Wikipedia. We came to the conclusion that you really should refrain from posting at ANI until you can show us some real substantive contributions to the article-space. I mean, you are not an administrator, and you aren't really helping mouthing off on ANI all the time, butting in on conversations among the higher-ups into which you were neither invited nor your opinion asked. What makes it all the worse is that you spend most of your wiki time on there, and not improving the articles in any way. So re-cap, please lay off of ANI for a while, and yeah, the articles are ---------------------> That-a-way! Merry Christmas, Spilled Coffee (talk) 16:44, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

National Recovery Administration

I understand that Richard Armour is notable, but there's nothing there to establish the notability of his comment with regards to the subject of the article. I have been burned by malware from unexpected places, so I'm kind of sensitive to the issue. Meanwhile, I wonder the German is for "he gawn"? Maybe er weg. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:26, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Response

You have gotten a response on ANI on your ill-considered and ignorant comments about Wiki_brah. see here, braho. Sharkticon Dude (talk) 00:25, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Appropriately enough, the typical brah contains nothing but boobs. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots00:33, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

December 2010

This is your last warning; the next time you steal my humorous comeback, as you have done here, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Short Brigade Harvester Boris (talk) 03:28, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you snooze, you lose. :) I have an idea, though... Add the preceding part where Ripper talks about communist infiltration, etc., just above my entry, so it will lead into it. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:47, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately for me as well, I had the same thought about 10 seconds after Bugs did. Not all of us can be as quick witted as him. As the French call it, "L'esprit de l'escalier" will have to do for the rest of us. --Jayron32 03:52, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Another suggestion would be to put him in the DeLorean and send him back to 1955, where he apparently came from. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots04:10, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"Who's the president in 1985?" "Ronald Reagan." "The actor??!!!" Doc talk 08:28, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are my Elvis!

Thank you for saying "Spam-only and vandalism-only accounts that are registered don't require any "warnings", as they have only one purpose here, they know what that purpose is, and they should be indef'd immediately"-that sums up my whole feeling. AGF runs dry when the other party is not acting in good faith. Happy new year!--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 02:07, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I second these words a thousand times over. I would add that the AGF extended these single purpose accounts is not extended to editors such as the two of you when trying to protect wikipedia from the damage that they cause. This fact has never made a lick of sense to me. Oh well, best wishes for your 2011. MarnetteD | Talk 16:51, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank ya vury much. Actually, I'm just quoting what a trusted admin told me long ago. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots16:55, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
One policy is that "AGF is not a suicide pact". I rephrase that as, "AGF, but don't be a maroon about it". PhGustaf (talk) 23:26, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

PM Sharon would be happy if Hamas killed Jews?

the beginning of the dispute, which you caught the end, was an editor on an article about Israel having made these comments, thus not being suitable for editing this subject. other editors who have made similar troubling comments came to her defense and buried the ani. now that you know the full story, do you still feel the comments are not offensive? i propose a test, use these words in a real life face to face conversation, in the same context, see if anyone is offended. Darkstar1st (talk) 16:42, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Taking words out of context is dishonest. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots16:54, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I should add that we do not characterize editors as "not being suitable for editing this subject", without a topic ban imposed by ArbCom or under limited circumstances by an admin. We judge content, not contributors. All the best,--Wehwalt (talk) 17:21, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
