small non-Latin character set difficulty

[edit]

It looks like AVB didn't quite parse a particular type of non-Latin character set in this revert. After AVB's change, the "got" language dissapeared. To help verify there wasn't another unrelated edit, here's the individual diffs: [1] [2]. After I changed it back, the language appeared as a long string of blocks, two above Hawai'i and two below Galego ([3]). In the edit before mine, you can see it missing from that spot.

It's a very small error, compared to speedily reverting page blanking and the rest, but I thought I should let you know in case you are unaware. Gotyear 23:06, 26 October 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Please whitelist User:Mathbot

[edit]

AntiVandalBot and Mathbot seem to have been edit-warring (e.g. [4] is a vandalism warning given to Mathbot by AntiVandalBot); check the history of User talk:Mathbot for a history of the warnings (there have been quite a lot...). You may want to whitelist Mathbot to stop any more weird bot interactions like this happening. --ais523 17:24, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

AntiVandalBot mistakes / improvements needed

[edit]

I find I'm really getting irritated by AntiVandalBot's disruption of a logical sequence of escalating warning messages on a user's talk page. It appears to post its standard boilerplate without looking at the comments and dates left by the previous substitution templates. In some cases I have taken to reverting the bot's edit and correcting it myself. I don't want to have to do this.

It doesn't seem hard to parse a page for the inline comments left by warning templates. For anonymous IP addresses, the bot could pay attention to warnings it finds within the past 24 hours and then post an escalated warning instead of the usual drivel it posts now.

Furthermore, the bot should stop inserting its own headings. It should use the -n templates such as {{subst:test2-n|PageName}} to insert the appropriate text with the name of the vandalized page built into it.

Just my $0.03 -Amatulic 22:52, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's something that's going to be added when we finally release version 2.0 or 3.0 depending on how you count of the bot... there really has been a war over the warnings the bot gives, people don't want an standard warning as it may confuse the rare new user who was acting IGF. As for the headers.... it's a major matter of discussion, personally I think it's easier (for me) at least to read... but we shall see - do you have a better warning template in mind? -- Tawker 23:17, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, the headers aren't a big deal, keep 'em.
The text is OK but I'd actually prefer the bot to use one of the standard warning templates and append its own text to it, something like this:
{{subst:test2-n|ArticleName}} ''This warning was added by [[AntilVandalBot]]. If this automated bot reverted a legitimate edit, please [[click here]] to bring it to the developers' attention so they can improve its behavior.''
That way the bot leaves behind the same standardized inline comments because it's using the standard templates. I use these comments to see what level warning has previously been added.
My major gripe is that the bot should be smart enough to know how to escalate the warnings based on what is already on the user's talk page. If that will be fixed in an upoming version, that's great. -Amatulic 23:28, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Half the problem is the fact that the template is not stable... maybe we'll add an comment into the existing warnings which should help a bit -- Tawker 23:33, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. Well, maybe a first step would be the capability for the bot to escalate its own warning level if the bot had previously placed one. Then at least you have control over the format and stability. And it would help if I could see the "level" of the bot's warning in a comment. -Amatulic 00:15, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is currently a lot of vandalism happening on this page in relation to an upcoming sports game. AVB is on the job, but is ending up reverting to vandals' versions of the page. I don't know what kind of attention this needs. I'm pretty new here. 66.245.149.113 22:52, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My IP Address

[edit]

Hi, I have been warned about vandalism I didn't commit on the African continent page

I am a peaceful person who doesnt want any trouble, and I suspect that someone knows my IP Adress and did this in my behalf, or the vandal bot is wrong

I would never vandalize Wikipedia, for I am responsible and it is a page I frequently visit.

I would like all and any wikipedia accounts , which maybe 1 I don't ever use, to be deleted so this can never happen again.

Your IP will never be permabanned, even at your request, because it won't always be your IP. IPs change hands from time to time. If you have an actual account, you can get that permabanned, but that has a password so, barring theft of your account, it will always be yours. -NorsemanII 07:02, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Olá. I have received a message from you, regarding an edit on the Serj Tankian article, and the reversal of it or something. Well, I have to say that I am neither a contributor or a vandal in this version of wikipedia, and that my computer (and this IP, from what I've read in the history page of said article) has nothing to do with it. This could have something to do with the fact that I have just reconnected my dialup, since I think IPs have something to do with this... I just wanted to warn you about this, since you're asking to bring such things about your bot to your attention, and from what I see here in this discussion page, your robotic pal's having a bad day XD

I made an edit to the Hatboro-Horsham Highschool Page

[edit]

The edit I made was a note on a certain school clubs, and a note on the specification of info already there. The first was in the line "principle Dennis Williams shut of the lights". I would like to point out that he told the tech crew to turn off the lights and sound. Since the members of tech crew are Matt and Owen, I felt it necessary to add their nicknames with it. The second edit was adding on that the school also has an award winning Jazz Ensemble which is headed by the teacher Mr. Kuczynski (Mr. K). Both of my edits were accurate and I feel should not have been changed.

Wikipedia Bot, Turkey Bowl

[edit]

The wikipedia entry which comes up first when you enter "Turkey bowl, Calvert Hall" in Google is a bogus entry. It talks of some football quarterback having vaginal pains, etc. In Google, the next "hit", which appears indented under the first "hit", is legitimate. I tried editing the first hit and when I realized the second hit was much better than what I had written, I tried to delete the whole page I had edited. It then reverted back to the asinine "vaginal cramps" page.

That page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey_Bowl) needs to be removed. The page which appears indented on a Google search (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvert_Hall_College) is better, even though it doesn't address the "Turkey Bowl" as a headline. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.174.171.161 (talkcontribs) 06:00, 1 November 2006

improper redirect was removed

[edit]

Someone had created a redirect which inadvertently rerouted searches for a legitimate Wiki entry off to an alternative spelling. In effect, this hijacked searches for one entry and deposited them at another irrelevant entry based upon the faulty assumption that the searcher had mispelled the name. Bad move. Better would be to edit the entry for the name of the person with closely spelled name to add link to other individual's wiki. ~Chandra Patel — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.51.6.208 (talkcontribs) 14:16, 5 October 2006

[edit]

I was looking through history of Constantine I and noticed that the Bot missed two occasions of someone inserting homophobic vandalism edits into the article—assuming it was running at all. Humans intervened in both cases. This is the second one, the first was a few edits earlier. Hence I thought to suggest you add some keywords like "homo", "homosexual" and whatever to your redflags and criteria. Perhaps an iterim tagging step flagging the file for human perusal is something to consider??? Good luck either way, and good job! Kudos. // FrankB 18:22, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AntiVandalBot apparently missed this edit to Booker Huffman and this edit to Paul Wight. However you also blanked the pages on four occasions: Booker Huffman 1, Booker Huffman 2, Booker Huffman 3 and Paul Wight.
The best way to deal with the problem is to revert the vandalism (see also Wikipedia:Vandalism for more extensive coverage of the subject) or to bring the matter to the attention of an administrator. You can also help out by joining the RC patrol. --Oden 12:06, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong revert on The Real World

[edit]

Hi AntiVandalBot,

You have reverted an edit which was made áfter the edit that vandalized a whole article: it seemed that the anonymous contributor you reverted, was just trying to solve the problem, but did not know how. Because English is not my mother tongue and therefore giving a clear explanation is hard for me, I recommend you to watch User talk:70.237.143.133 and its edit to see what I mean, so you can try to make the software even better (I think it is already quite nice).

Bye, SietskeEN 20:05, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

John Christie

[edit]

I deleted the text on John Christie (producer) as almost all of it was duplicated in the (better informed) page on John Christie (Glyndebourne).

They actually refer to the same person but the connection does not seem to have been recognised. So I suggest that the first page is completely deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.109.184.210 (talkcontribs) 17:39, 9 November 2006

(diff). When you have two articles (like John Christie (producer) and John Christie (Glyndebourne)) which cover the same subject the best course of action is to merge them. Blanking one of them (which here might have been done with the best of intentions) is not a good idea, and is sometimes done by vandals. --Oden 09:54, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A tricky mistake by AVB

[edit]

I'm not sure there's an easy solution for this one, but since you're looking for feedback, I'll offer what I can. Legit blanking to Jacob Fred Jazz Oddessy (misspelled article title) by User:Cobrapete was reverted (and warning left at User talk:Cobrapete) because I'd added a merge-to tag to the article, and made a couple of other tiny edits. I speedied the article, so there's not much for post-mortem, but the details to consider are: the article was less than forty-eight hours old, had been created by the alleged vandal, and had maybe 15 or 20 edits, of which all but four were made by the creator/alleged vandal. That ... might have been enough to clue in a human.

Another thing AVB might have wanted to consider: the article, when blanked, had a merge-to template at the top. I realize that merges usually should be made into redirects, and that cases like this where deletion is justified are the exception, not the rule. But at the very least, maybe AVB should consider creating the redirect when there's a merge-to with a valid target. At least in cases where the blanked article is very new, very short, or has very few edits/editors. (Probably don't want to do it in all cases, since vandals and POV-pushers could learn to take advantage.)

I realize that asking for AVB to recognize edge cases like this may be asking for a lot, but I hope I've at least given you some food for thought. Cheers, Xtifr tälk 00:05, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tawker- the page is still the same wrong version. I tried to restore it msyself but your bot automatically changes it back to the wrong version, leaving Deathrockers unsourced and inaccurate version in place. Why is this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_After_Midnight_%28band%29 blipblip]

AntiVandalBot was right the first time, other admins have tried to explain the way Wikipedia works to Blipblip on the talkpage but it doesn't seem to be getting though. (His variation is stolen from the band's official site, has been shown to be POV and violative of Wiki policies) If you check the version AntiVandalBot reverted to, it has 7 sources (blipblip isn't telling the truth) [16] Could ypu change it back to AVB's version please? - Deathrocker 00:49, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bots don't take sides, they are very neutral in that regard. As for the rest of us, it is important to avoid an edit war. Drastic changes should perhaps be discussed before being introduced, in order to reach a consensus. --Oden 01:02, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This 12.43.something guy

[edit]

Censoring.

[edit]

The RuPaul article mentions the phrase "genderfuck." This is a legitimate term and does not direct itself to the article if it is censored. Even if it were not, censoring the word "fuck" to "f**k" is hardly desired. While I realize that (and applaud you for) you are trying to create something that removes vandalism, it should either leave swear words along or remove them completely. It really should not censor them with *.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.10.95.220 (talkcontribs) 09:10, 18 November 2006

Jack Reynolds

[edit]

There are two Jack Reynolds, both English footballers/managers. There is also a third Jack Reynolds who was an American footballer. This is why I have used their years of birth/death in article titles rather then footballer. Your anti vandal bot and reverted my attempts to avoid repeating articles. There is no Super Mario Football in delopment yet

[edit]

Why did you revert it back to the vandize page of Super Mario Football with a long page in it. 70.110.165.160

  • Here's the diff. There should be no blank pages on Wikipedia, instead an article which should be deleted should go through the deletion process.
  • When you blanked the page a second time you wrote the following in the edit summary: "Reverting back to the blank page because there is no Super Mario Football in delopment yet get it through your head AntiVandaBot." Bots may not have any feelings (that we know of), but their human creators sure do. See Wikipedia:Civility and Wikipedia:No personal attacks.

The Spelling of Shafaat Jamil

[edit]

Recenly I gave more information about Col. Shafaat Jamil. A national hero of Bangladesh. His spelling is Shafaat not Shafat. I am an author, a university teacher and nephew of Col. Shafaat Jamil. So I changed the mistake. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sumit2006 (talkcontribs) 16:20, 20 November 2006

Hello, AVBot. Could you give a message to your programmer? Your recent revert of Fire re-introduced some vandalism that another user had already reverted (and then you warned the reverter). Thanks! — Knowledge Seeker 06:39, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Anti vandal bot more trouble than it's worth?

[edit]

I've noted several occasions where the antivandal bot merely reverts to a previous version of vandalism and then no one catches it because they see "oh the bot caught it" and move on so the previous vandalism stays in place for months. Here is an example of one I caught today [19] but there are many many more which have lasted for weeks or longer.--Deglr6328 01:05, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The antivandalbot defeated one attempted vandalism of the Dora the explorer page but this page is nearly always under attack so I must ask if the AVB has a watchlist could you put this page on there. Conserned Superx 02:55, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Code for Rollback?

Have you guys implemented code for Rollback? I would love to get that kind of thing for an anti-vandal protection I'm making. It would automatically rollback a certain user's edits. Thanks --ApplePie3 04:55, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
