Dear Spanglej, I trust you receive this message. You may certainly move my posts about Wilfred Owen to the proper place on the Talk Page. I don't know how to do so. MacLennan123 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.34.5.122 (talk) 14:54, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Bell Jar

[edit]

Thanks for your consistent work on The Bell Jar over the years as well as monitoring its changes over the past few months after my students made their own contributions. Excellent point about the attribution of criticism; grades were docked accordingly (we did talk about NOR). So, thanks again. It's great to be able to have my students interact with other Wikipedians. Much obliged for your vigilance. Roseclearfield (talk) 15:56, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have no blocks of free time to devote to Wikipedia now, and probably for the next few months. I am also committed to working on at least one Civil War article first, if it ever happens that I do have blocks of free time. After that, however, I have long had my eye on William Carlos Williams as a good candidate for major body work. If you ever see me hitting it hard, you are cordially invited to join in the fun. – Ling.Nut3 (talk) 12:18, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Danny DeVito's height

[edit]

Hi Spanglej,

I'm not a native speaker. Can you please explain to me how "short statured" is a euphemism and also make a suggestion how it can be phrased without using a euphemism? Not noting what Danny is known/remembered for (if he likes it or not) IMHO is a disservice to the readers of wikipedia. As is, the article gives a very incomplete picture by avoiding any mentioning of his physical appearance.

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.243.7.168 (talk) 16:00, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Anna Akhmatova

[edit]

hello,

great work on Anna Akhmatova. I wonder if you think this article is ready for GAN or FAC? I would like to see her on the main page some day, and I am asking if you will work on it or not. The German version is worse than our's but is still a FA. Regards.--GoPTCN 08:18, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There are some issues on its GAN page which I hope you can address: Talk:Anna Akhmatova/GA1. I fixed point 2 and from the references 11 and 17. Regards.--GoPTCN 14:41, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Many apologies

[edit]

I am sorry about not following though sooner on the message you left me on Sunday. Life off wiki is a little hectic and I seem to keep winding up in little fires on wiki that need putting out. The IPs locating to Crawley (I have another persistent one that seems to be editing from all the computers in Burton-on-Trent) is a clear indication of an IP hopping problem. The new one does seem to be making some legit edits which may well be just to try and cover the bad ones. As I mentioned you might contact January (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) who blocked the previous IP for two weeks or, since we have enough warnings on its talk page, file an AIV report the next time they make a bad edit. Do mention the other IP as well if you file that report. Cheers and happy editing - whenever that can happen :-) MarnetteD | Talk 21:40, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Although the IP poster didn't give any edit summary (and I have reminded them about this), the deletion seems valid. A quick note

[edit]

Hi Span - Regarding your note here, this IP is being used by an indef blocked user - I know your intentions are good, but if they followed your advice and created an account it would be considered block evasion. If this editor ever chooses to be a constructive contributor they will need to request unblock from their main (indef blocked) account. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 22:18, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JP. Some confusion here. The IP resumed editing today under that account, so I assumed the block had ended. Has the blocked lapsed? I can remove my message if not. Thanks Span (talk) 22:24, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The original IP block had lapsed, but I reset it as the same user obviously still has control of it. Your message on their talk actually helped as it allowed me to note they had resumed editing, but it should likely be removed as they really can't create a new account without running afoul of WP:SOCK. Cheers, --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 22:32, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, sorry for the confusion. I have removed the message. Span (talk) 22:33, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

SpangleJ, I think I'm with you on the edit, but will you please do me a favor and explain, briefly, on the talk page why you did it? It would be much appreciated. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 23:58, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is NOT a personal attack. YOUR EDITS disrespected an American. She WAS the first poet in Indiana and holds the title in the Book of Records. Your actions of disrespect of America and American history leads me to believe that your actions are personal and have an axe to grind with my culture, and I wish you to cease all your disrespectful edits! Thank you. --David Holmer (talk) 21:47, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Span, maybe that poet should be also placed here? But if you want some real culture, it seems you need to get yourself to Bolton. Martinevans123 (talk) 23:07, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Saw your comment at Poetry, I think this is more WP:OWN than nationalist feelings. NtheP (talk) 09:33, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is an attempt to reach compromise as you have stalked me in over thirty articles undo-ing every one of my edits. This is NOT about WP:OWN, but there is a personal tone because I DO feel this is a PERSONAL attack against me. Obvious, you are contacting others and communicating with them against my opinion and editing. Isn't this WP:canvassing? It feels as if you are all ganging up on me... everywhere I turn is discussions on everyone's talk pages against me! Is that what Wikipedia is about... destroying articles and destroying all newcomers? --David Holmer (talk) 20:37, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

David, my eye was caught by the unusual name of this poet, of whom I had never heard before, here and I decided to leave a suggestion and an attempt at a droll comment. I can assure you that Span has certainly not contacted me about this, or any of your other edits. I'm very sorry that you feel people are "ganging up on you" and I do hope that you and Span can find some kind of middle ground where you can agree and collaborate. And, in any case, I think it unlikely that Keith Lard was in fact Bolton's first poet, or even that the two are related. Regards. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:59, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Martinevan, I am still really "green" here and have already been thrown to the wolves at AFD within my first week, so as a result, I tend to be very defensive and protective. --David Holmer (talk) 21:02, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dalton/Brosnan

[edit]

Hi Spanglej. I have reverted your edit with the requested citation. I'm currently working on a discussion article for the Timothy Dalton talk page about this issue. Although we both know Wikipedia prohibits original research in articles, I do think I have sufficient documentary primary sources to prove that the producers approached the actors in the following order: Neill->Brosnan->Dalton. The 15 May 1986 New York Post reported that EON had signed Brosnan. Bond producer Cubby Broccoli did not consider or meet Dalton until Dalton was performing The Taming of the Shrew at the Haymarket theatre (London). At this meeting Dalton mentioned he could not do the film unless it was pushed back to the fall due to his Brenda Starr commitment. (Source: Broccoli autobiography, pp.280-281.) The 1 September 1991 Los Angeles Times article reports that the production company producing Brenda Starr formed in May 1986 and production began in July 1986. Numerous newspapers and books report that The Taming of the Shrew with Dalton at the Haymarket began its eight week run starting June 1986. If you want to discuss this further please continue the discussion here on your talk page. Thank you. - Fanthrillers (talk) 19:28, 21 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for add the cite. It might be worth adding this info to the article talk page as you have challenged a number of given sources. Brocolli's autobiography is a solid source, no doubt. Best wishes Span (talk) 19:33, 21 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Dylan Thomas: Return Journey"

[edit]

Hi Span, are we sure that the Bob Kingdom one-man stage show was non-notable? But looking at Anthony Hopkins' own article, it seems it was his film-directing debut. So were there two separate things? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:27, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I've turned up a NYT review that will go to notability, even if they do slam the production. Span (talk) 10:53, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Yes, a bad production might be particularly notable! I guess this [1] was the filmed version of that show. Kingdom looks quite like him there, doesn't he. Martinevans123 (talk) 11:12, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Edinburgh Festival blurb says the production got international rave reviews. But I can't find hide nor hair of these online. The blurb in itself isn't RS enough. Yes, the picture looks a lot like him. Span (talk) 11:35, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As a Welsh poet

[edit]

Hi Spanglej. Just a quick note as why I think the mention of Aneirin Talfan Davies' discussion about Bardic traditions is important. As a stand-alone quote it probably isn't important, but as information regarding how important Thomas was as a Welsh poet I think it holds water. What I'm trying to add to this section is Thomas' connection to Wales, and his disowning of it. As we know, Thomas was a verbal manipulator, and would change his point of view on a whim, sometimes just to amuse himself. I don't want future editors coming in with the line "Thomas denied that he was a 'Welsh' poet", when we can build up a picture showing he was influenced and well versed in modern and ancient Welsh traditions. I think half of Thomas' quotes were just made of the cuff to either annoy people, or to make out that another writer or a critic had interpreted his work incorrectly. FruitMonkey (talk) 10:39, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sure.
"Head of Programmes Wales at the BBC, Aneirin Talfan Davies, who commissioned several of Thomas' early radio talks, believed that the poet's "whole attitude is that of the medieval bards." Despite Thomas's claims that he knew nothing about Welsh bardic traditions, Davies stated that the two of them spoke several times on the subject."
I take your point, but with the current phrasing it sounds bit like synthesis. That is to say, that Davies formed an opinion based on a couple of chats. Just because Thomas spoke about bardic traditions, doesn't mean he knew much about them. I can talk for hours about the Pre-Cambrain era, it doesn't mean I know anything substantive. The section comes across as a bit pointy, as if we are making an editorial argument that Thomas must have been well versed in bardic lore. That is why I would either take out the last sentence (above) or rephrase. I would imagine other biogs explore this same terrain. I have to say, I think it's a little soon to put the article up for GA as much of the death section isn't properly ref'd and the poetry part needs a lot more adding. But I guess there's such a long backlog that it might take months before it's reviewed. Span (talk) 11:36, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Point taken, it just states spoke about. The GA thing is far too early, but I think that like you said the backlog is huge, plus I don't think the article is in so bad shape that it will be just rejected out of hand. I think a good GA editor would give pointers and give us time to address any issues. I have ordered three more books on Thomas, so I hope to get a more rounded view on many of the topics in the next week. FruitMonkey (talk) 13:07, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have now removed the offending sentence and found another view that counters. Hope you find that more valid. Cheers. FruitMonkey (talk) 09:44, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. Span (talk) 09:46, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thomas

[edit]

No aggression intended Spangle, it was late and text is infamous for lack of emotive expression. Though I do dislike the tendency for some editors to prefer online cites. One of my last articles that went through the GA process I ended up having to scan the books and email the images to the reviewer to prove that I wasn't making them up. That was a real pain. I'll try to keep smart-ass comments to a minimum in future. Regards FruitMonkey (talk) 09:47, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I hope we can enjoy the process and get a lit reasonable reviewer - there are lots out there. Best wishes Span (talk) 09:50, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Spangle, two books just dropped through my door. The first is 'The life of Dylan Thomas' by FitzGibbon. I have the 1965 print, but originally the D.T. bibliography stated 1975. Now I checked the first cite to link to the book and that was about the Kardomah Gang on page 9. There is no mention of the Kardomah Gang or Cafe on page 9 or the surrounding pages (...and its not in the index either). There was a 1975 version of 'The life of Dylan Thomas' but this was a reissue rather than a 2nd edition. Do you have a copy of FitzGibbon's work as I don't want to delete a cite if the later books did hold this information. Thanks FruitMonkey (talk) 11:57, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I added it to verify the Mermaid and Antelope bit. The newspaper article only covers the Kardomah section. I've been using Google Books & Scholar, Oxford Reference online and Highbeam for my research on this. The cite maybe a typo. Could you try p91 for the Mermaid et al? Full biogs are better, no doubt. Cheers. Span (talk) 12:15, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the support. Please change anything you feel I'm goofing up on. I'm surrounded by books and I'm losing perspective on some of my wording, try two sentences, it will read better. By the way, do you think the Desert Island Discs thing is a bit too 'trivia', I added it to back up the claim that he has been embraced by the general public, but I'm a little unsure of it. FruitMonkey (talk) 21:08, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think the DIDs are wonderful. GAs and FAs are best when they reach out to engage the reader and it's the human, personal details that pull us in. That's my view, anyway. I did try to find a way to reform the sentence but wasn't quiet sure what nuance you aiming for. Maybe come back to it when you've rested up. Things will look fresher tomorrow. I'll leave it with you. Best wishes Span (talk) 21:30, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Silktork, the GA reviewer is questioning it, on the Dylan Thomas talk page. Thanks for pointing me towards the Highbeam subscription area, I'll take that up. I'm assuming the "sea-city" quote is a quote fom Thomas, as of course Swansea was a town until 1970ish. Can we confirm this? I'm happy to re-add if you are. I'm off to Google Earth to see if I can see the sea from the hill. FruitMonkey (talk) 09:56, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually Silktork is correct, the front bedroom, if that is where Thomas slept, faces away from Swansea, facing Sketty. He has a point. FruitMonkey (talk) 10:09, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I won't argue the point, as I'm just going on the IT article. Replied fully by mail. I guess I favour flowers. Span (talk) 10:56, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Flags in the list of gothic fiction

[edit]

Hails! I understand your change was made according to the wiki rules and I accept it, but I would like to say something, so you can decide. First of all, I never put flags next to the people names except in this case. Gothic fiction is a genre with huge national subgenres, and many people are interested only in one of them. So, in England and the rest of what is today the UK, we have "gothic novel" (not to be confused with the whole genre of gothic fiction), in Germany (and the rest of the HRE), there is distinct subgenre of Schauerroman, which, despite the German name for gothic fiction is Die Schauerliteratur, is different than English gothic novel, and a fan of the first might not be a fan of the second. France had many distinct styles on its own, like roman noir, roman frenetique, etc. The biggest difference is in gothic fiction from Russian Empire, which, although it doesn't have a specifical name, has unique "folk" and dream-like athmosphere (in the early works) and much more developed psychological characterization (in the later days). The last is GF from the USA, which has two waves on its own (first with two distinct styles of Poe and Hawthorne, and second is southern gothic). P.S. Feel free to answer here, I'll follow your talkpage until you answer. Regards, HeadlessMaster (talk) 18:49, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi HM, I take your point but am not sure the flags help a) because it's not clear in the list why they are there at present b) because no country names are given and, as it says in MOS:FLAG, most people would not be able to identify all the flags (eg the flag of Uruguay, the Holy Roman Empire or the Kingdom of Prussia) c) there's no description of the assorted waves of Gothic lit to support the denominations. I'm sure it was a lot of work to put them up there but I think they are redundant. I'm sure the Gothic fiction article could use some of your descriptions of the waves. It needs a lot of work and some descent sourcing as does the list. Best wishes Span (talk) 19:02, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll try to do some changes in the original GF article (which is very anglocentric, no offense, at least to a person from the continental Europe like me) and put short information in the lead section of the list after I return from vacation (in about 10 days). Yes, I hadn't thought that some people can't identify flags (and I am sorry for that), since I am very interested in European history and all those flags are natural to me. Thank you for your fast reply and I'll inform you when I do all changes, so you can give your opinion. Best wishes, HeadlessMaster (talk) 19:21, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You removed a solid ref from The Times of India that cites her as a folk singer. If you wish to change her DOB from what is currently given, you would need a reliable source. A private blog is not held by WP to be a reliable source. Span (talk) 17:14, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Conan Doyle

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your contribution to the above. I have a couple of concerns. I think it's better for the header to be called "Biography" as that covers all aspects of his life; Sub sections can then take care of the specific parts of his life. With regards to the images, I appreciate the image concerns, however I think the images squeezed up against one another on the same side, look's very untidy. I'm sure a bit more playing around with the images will satisfy both our concern's. All the best! -- CassiantoTalk 21:38, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Clientèle

[edit]

There is absolutely no need to replace "clientele" with "clientèle" in en.wikipedia articles. In fr.wikipedia, fine. The English word is "clientele", as attested by these dictionaries: American Heritage, Oxford, Macmillan, Merriam-Webster's, Cambridge and others. That should be good enough for you. LOL more! I know it's even difficult to see the changes when viewing the diffs, so I don't blame you for not catching what I did. I'll check back to the article in a few hours time, and if it looks like everyone's gone to bed, I'll try again.  -- WikHead (talk) 00:21, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello S. If my memory is working I think that you have reverted some of the edits of our Burton-on-Trent problem editor (if not you might yet bump into them) so I wanted you to know that I have created this page User:MarnetteD/Burton-on-Trent Vandal so that we can keep track of the numerous IPs that have been and will be used by this person. Feel free to add to it if you encounter them again. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 17:02, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Poetry

[edit]

Hi. I'll explain my edits to "poetry" as follows.

First, I made an etymology section because I felt that the multiple statements in parentheses in that first sentence were becoming cluttered and could be better fleshed out in its own section (especially by further research and thus edits made in the future).

Second, the first paragraph—although it attempts to—does not really define poetry in opposition to prose very well at all. Prose also can, and in written form often does, have aesthetic qualities. Although poetry is closely associated with aesthetic ideas such as "prettiness," these are common features of prose just as much (and certainly aren't just some accident on the part of the writers of prose). Rather, what has traditionally defined poetry is conscious attention to and manipulation of its structure, which is why I also included the examples of meter, rhyme, and line (or, if you prefer, "verse"). If you at least agree to these explanations but would like to see me add in sources to support my wording, I will happily do the research. But I think (obviously) that at least my edits were indeed an improvement on the definition. Wolfdog (talk) 16:08, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank for your message. I'd just bear in mind that the article is an FA and has been pretty carefully constructed to meet those guidelines. (That's not to say it can't be improved and updated). My main reason for reverting was that a separate section for two lines don't fly. Assertions in the lead have to be carefully supported in the body of the article. The arguments regarding how prose differs from poetry are legion, complex and unresolved. I'd suggest drafting out changes you might want to make and airing them on the talk page. I hope that helps. John Keats

[edit]

Hi ST, thanks for all your recent work on Dylan Thomas. I wondered what you think of the article on poet John Keats. I wrote it a few years back. Your general, brief thoughts on going for GA would be very welcome. Best wishes Span (talk) 23:01, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just having a quick glance, and noting down my initial impressions.
  • The lead is incomplete - see WP:Lead. I checked the statement in the lead: "Today his poems and letters are some of the most popular and most analyzed in English literature", and it doesn't appear to be mentioned in the main body, and is unsourced.
  • "The Keats at the Globe pub" appears to be called The Globe pub with an attached bar of that name - though that needs to be more reliably sourced than by FancyAPint!
  • The prose appears to be clear and informative. No obvious problems there.
  • Images are appropriate with acceptable captions - I've not checked them for appropriate licences. There is an acceptable reference section. The article appears stable - it has evidence of reverts of IP editors which I've not investigated, but at first glance that appears normal for an article of this profile.
  • While there is a liberal sprinkling of cites, certain statements stand out that are uncited: "It was Lockhart at Blackwoods who coined the defamatory term "the Cockney School" for Hunt and his circle".
  • "Otho (critically damned", "None of Brawne's letters to Keats survive; he requested that her letters be destroyed after his death." etc.
  • The layout seems acceptable, though the section title "Biographical controversy" needs discussing.
  • I am unable to comment on focus, broad coverage, original research, and NPOV as those areas require some background reading and source checking - with a topic as rich and important as Keats that would take from two weeks to a month.
  • I would say from that quick glance, that the article is close to being ready, but needs a little bit more work on the lead, and on ensuring that everything is cited. It would also benefit from someone with some knowledge of the topic who has not been involved in writing the article looking it over to check that it does cover the main points of his life in a fair and neutral manner. Sadly, while we have a project of people willing to do copyediting, we don't appear to have one willing to check content. You could try a Peer Review, though my understanding is that they are very variable, and not always very helpful. I've not used one so I have no experience of them. Perhaps ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Poetry for people to look it over. Good luck! SilkTork ✔Tea time 00:20, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I know a user can delete some unnecessary stuffs from their talk pages. However, I restored it because I want to hear his/her answer. He/she got rid of it without even say something. Check back at his edit reverting mine, I just wonder a long-time user as him/her doesn't even know that format for a key article in the categorization. ༆ (talk) 01:24, 15 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I understand, but on one's own page we have the prerogative to answer/delete/restore and more or less edit as we wish. Most of us are constantly learning new things as we edit; this is one of the great thing about WP. I have been here for over three years and I hadn't seen that syntax for categorisation before; which is no great surprise, not at all unbelievable. We learn by watching others do their good work. Trying to clean up unsourced templates in Langston Hughes

[edit]

The article failed Good nom because of missing sources, a section on his style and a better lead that summarized the whole article. Do you or maybe Parkwell know what this is from? "Because of the unstable early life, his childhood was not an entirely happy one, but it strongly influenced the poet he would become."97.85.168.22 (talk) 03:10, 15 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

One of his biographers does describe his unhappy childhood (page 4 -talks of his being 'rejected' by Jesus) and abandonment issues but she doesn't draw the conclusion that the unhappiness of his childhood forged him as a poet as the line suggests. 97.85.168.22 (talk) 03:44, 15 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thanks for your message. The line has been in since at least 2005. In Dec 2004 the article reads "Upon his graduation in 1919, Hughes spent a year in Mexico with his father. This made him severely unhappy. Most of the time Langston, depressed, contemplated suicide." (Unsourced). I do suspect that the break of his family wasn't a happy thing for Hughes; my sense is that the line is an accurate reflection, but it's easy enough to verify. To my knowledge, the article has never been properly overhauled. It's very rag tag. It would need to properly reworked with biographies. The article was nom'd by a new editor who hadn't done any work on the article and wasn't prepared to work up the suggested changes. (They misunderstood how GAN works). I hope that helps. Happy editing. Span (talk) 09:47, 15 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

She/he seems to be learning fast and hanging on in there. Some people don't like to talk. Not sure the big red hand helped much, esp given after a reprimand had already been given and heeded. But hey. They are under no actual obligation to reply. Too many (university) librarians feel maligned here and slope off in a huff (often with some reason). I figure, let them do their thing, learn in their own way under a caring eye and see what happens. Sometimes the best work does get done when we are left alone to get on with it. Hi, It is important to let people know that Ruskin was an Economist. In fact, he seems to be the only one on the other side of the Free Market debate. Stupid Question

[edit]

Thank you for your help on the Hermann Braun article. Please continue to be patient with me. I’m old and this technology can be VERY intimidating. I only on a chance of using the edit selection to respond to talk found out today how to respond to talk. It actually worked!!! I didn’t know that. I really wish Wikipedia required a short tutorial both online and with You-Tube like demonstrations as soon as a person started typing on their first article. It would make your life easier and we contributors would all start with the same set of core knowledge. As it is now, we are left to sink or swim.

I am asking both of you (Fiddle Faddle and Span) a question. However, you are under no obligation to answer it. I am very perplexed. I just received a rejection on a new article because my sources were unreliable. With the addition of a few items (including a New York Times article and a book by a Harvard professor) and Internet Movie and Filmportal.de references (which I am working to replace with better sources), they are the IDENTICAL sources found in the German and Russian Wikipedia versions of this article. Those articles were acceptable. So, why isn’t mine and would it have had a better chance of being approved had I just translated the German article (I must rely on Google translator for Russian) and submitted that? I pointed this out to the rejector and I don't expect either of you to get involved in the fray. I'm just want your opinions, even if I'm in the wrong. J R Gainey Thank you most kindly! JRG

I know and you have been most kind. I've e-mailed people in Germany and I have more on Ohlsen than they do and the only sources they have for his dates (since records are sealed except for family members) are the Internet Movie Database and Filmportal.de. One just wrote and suggested I try the "Filmmuseum Berlin" which I am about to do. Also, on Google Books I found a snippet which states that he was sent to a Concentration Camp in 1940. I'll added it to the article today. Thank you again! JRG

Thank you for your kindness! I am working to find a more viable source for Ohlsen dates. I have felt it needs more proof than just I cited, but, at least its a starting point. Comment

[edit]

Hi Spanglej,

Looking at our occasional disagreements, I would like to tell that not every sourced content should remain in articles. It should be corrected or even removed in the following situations: (a) the meaning of the text would not be clear for a typical reader, (b) cherry-picking phrases instead of adequately summarizing content from a source, (c) giving undue weight to minority or even fringe views, (d) outdated information, and so on. Sure thing, one must know the subject to make such changes. Speaking about myself, I am not a historian of course (actually I am a biophysicist), but I did study Russian history at school and University, read a lot, and most important, have very good sources handy. For example, Shentalinsky is one of very few researchers who was allowed to work with closed KGB archives and specializes in the history of Soviet literature. Speaking about books and other sources, no matter Biology or History, their quality varies widely. Only few of them are written by top experts, and it's not uncommon that some sources provide incorrect or outdated information. Cheers, My very best wishes (talk) 12:26, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ruskin?

[edit]

On my talk page you wrote: 'Hi Paul, thanks for your edits to Ruskin. I note you have removed a number of solid references and added a large amount of text that is entirely unreferenced' Um what are you talking about? I don't know whether you are referring to the Ruskin disambiguation page or to the John Ruskin page. I have made no recent edits to either of them. Perhaps you are referring to the Mrs Ruskin (Effie Gray) page, which has recently undergone massive expansion. All of the new text was added in a single edit by User:MerrynWilliams, whose only edit it is [5]. The content was unreadable because it was formatted wrongly. This is what the page looked like after the edit [6]. All my edits were simply reformatting to make the page readable. I have added no content. I was not aware that any references had been removed. Manchester University

[edit]

I was waiting for that. I very carefully removed things that made the article hard to read, added wikilinks and tried to make sure university wasn't unneccessarily capitalised. You undid it all arbitrarily. It took me an hour, it took you one click. That's vandalism. Flitterby (talk) 20:10, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Flitterby - although much of your copy editing is in my view useful and improving, you have to recognise that (i) writing styles are subjective; and (ii) it is simply unacceptable to edit war to try to impose mere stylistic changes, as you have been doing at the Manchester University article. You accuse Spanglej of vandalism for reverting your changes but seem unable to grasp that your own editing at that article has involved edit warring and you have failed to engage with the comments about the article made on your talk page which makes your attitude here even harder to sympathise with. [edit]

Hi Spanglej, glad to see someone (else) working on Roth. The article desperately needs a portrait photo, but that means a photographer giving us a CC license, or taking a photo I guess. I have been searching around for a half decent biog account but can find little, which seems a shame having given 50 years to dance. It seems she is about to pop off to the great dance hall in the sky so it would be great to work up the article into a good state before the world descends on it. I've added all I could find, which isn't much. Anything about her family would be great. Cheers. Span (talk) 22:50, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's remarkable how little there is -- except that we know quite clearly from her dance, and indeed from Sweat Your Prayers, that she's an intensely private person. That gave me the clue: I've added the cover of SYP, and created an early bio using SYP quotes. I think it's ok to use autobiography to establish facts - obviously it does nothing for notability, but that's covered already. It would still be much better to get more in the way of independent reviewers' comments, academic/public biography or whatever. I expect such will be written eventually. Chiswick Chap (talk) 11:14, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My previous comment was not very tactful. I can find nothing at all about recent or ongoing illness. It's always best to err on the side of respecting privacy anyway. The fickle media will no doubt go from ignoring her work almost completely (even the New York Times) to making her the darling of major retrospectives, films and biogs. Ho hum. I don't have any of her books. Any basic facts her about her life, including a cite for her birth date, would be helpful. Span (talk) 12:20, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

List of postmodern writers

[edit]

Thanks for the advice. I now realize that a long list of writers exists on the Postmodern literature page and that a relationship exists between this, and the separate List of postmodern writers article. I should have checked before. Maybe the (redundant?) "List of writers" page should be reduced to just a link to the main postmodern article page. The question of citations, and who to include, could be much better handled within the main article. Rwood128 (talk) 23:18, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I read your suggestion to me that I use the citations not formatted as inline citations, which are hiding somewhere, as additions to my *Further Reading Section* as they are important to the biography of musician-artist Anna Homler. Rita Hayworth Wholesale Reverts

[edit]

I just noticed that you reverted my edits to the Rita Hayworth article. Your edit summary is misleading as you said that only "third degree headings not needed" [7]. You did not just remove the "third degree headings", you reverted all my edits without providing a reason why. Did you look at the edits I made? I changed up the order of the sections because it makes no sense to read about a person's marriages and health problems after you just read a section that discussed their death. I also took the time to add sources to quotes and other material that had fact tags by them. Why were these removed? If you do not agree with the stylistic changes, you could have at least approached me or brought it up on the talk page like I have. Doing a wholesale revert without even looking at the edits someone took time and effort to make is not very collaborative. I have reinstated the changes I made because last time I looked, adding sources to an article is a good thing. If you take issue with the other changes I made, please communicate with me on the article talk page as I have opened up a discussion there. 24.224.43.225 (talk) 21:05, 4 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Demographic and climate stats are often a target for vandals and POV pushers and falsified figures, in my experience, stay undetected for years. Thricecube added demographic stats to around 1000 articles, most of which had no source added, and in many cases the figures clashes with the stats in given sources. This does nothing to help the article or the reader. Thricecube has not gone back and addressed this issue. I have rv'd some stats where there is no new source given for clashing stats. As an experienced editor I would expect thricecube to know that we need inline citations; a note in the edit summary is useless to a reader wanting to check their figures in three years time. This is not rocket science. Span (talk) 23:37, 19 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've reported the anonymous "Daniel Craig has diabetes" editor for edit warring here. As it turns out, the Danny Craig who has diabetes is a video game character, hence my exasperated edit revert summary here. - Fanthrillers (talk) 18:26, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP Poetry and The Canterbury Tales task force

[edit]

As someone who is listed as a participant for WikiProject Poetry, I hope you will be interested to learn of an attempt to revive the WP and alongside this the creation of task force to improve coverage of The Canterbury Tales. We are currently looking for participants to help set up the basics. Please get involved if you can, and we can hopefully revive this important project within Wikipedia! Many thanks, MasterOfHisOwnDomain (talk) 00:26, 13 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I realised that I never thanked you for your comments on my talk page. Thank you for helping me to see how I was misinterpreting policy, and bringing me back in line. Thanks to you I have corrected my mistake with (I hope) suitable contrition. --Andrewaskew (talk) 23:06, 19 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Abdyl Frashëri, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Macedonia (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
