Welcome?
[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia, Anakin101. Are you a new user? I was going to give you a more elaborate welcome message with useful links and the like, but your contributions reflect a clear understanding of Wikipedia policy and Wikipedia's inner workings from the moment you began editing. If you are a new user, here's a grand welcome (if you are an alternate account of an experienced user you might want to look at alternate accounts): GoodnightmushTalk 18:46, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for welcoming me. I am actually new as a registered user - I've updated my user page now to explain myself. Anakin101 18:58, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
Warnings
[edit]Hi, I noticed that you have been doing a lot of CSD tagging today. However it is better if you also post some sort of notice or warning on the talk page of the article creator so that if he/she continues adding inappropriate pages, some record is there based on which action can be taken. Other than that, keep up the good work. :) - TwoOars 21:25, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
- Ok. I will figure out how to do that. Thank you. Anakin101 21:26, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Owen Jones
[edit]Please don't change the Owen Jones article again. (Why tag Owen Jones and none of the other Celtic youth players??) This player is a professional footballer. Being a youth player in the UK does not change that status. "Professional" is not the opposite of "youth" - it is the opposite of "amateur". All youth players with contracts in the UK are paid to do their jobs and are professionals, by definition. If you don't know anything about it stop changing the article because it doesn't appear to be in good faith. Thanks. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.10.102.62 (talk • contribs) 03:55, 11 June 2007 (UTC).
- It is certainly not "Vandalism?" as you put it. I noticed another editor had tagged the article for the following reason "This is not a professional player for Celtic F.C., but a youth player. Hence fails WP:BIO in the absence of other claims of notability.", and you had removed the tag before its expiry, apparently on your own whim. And I did read your "discussion". It certainly looked like fanatic-player support-turned-tag-abuse. But since you left the other tag, I'll just leave it alone (you might be right). Anakin101 10:08, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Wrong Edits
[edit]Hi, Yes, I apologise for this, I was trying to go through recent changes too quickly and thus made mistakes. I'm going to look carefully now and find out what was correct and what wasn't. --RiverRubicon (talk) 17:36, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
- Looking at it, embarassingly you seem to have done most of the corrections for me! I'm going to look carefully through the remaining ones, but thanks for correcting my reversion errors so far. It's very kind of you, especially going to the effort of cleaning up after my mess. Please be assured it won't happen again (from me).--RiverRubicon (talk) 17:39, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
- Agh - I had a long response typed up about how I tended to make incorrect edits, but when I clicked Save Page it gave me a "Wikipedia is experiencing technical problems" page and I lost it. But to summarize: it's because I judge IPs way too quickly and harshly. I see so much spam coming from IPs, endlessly filling Wikipedia with rubbish, and new contiubutions come in so fast that I want to revert as much vandalism as possible before it gets past the post (i.e. exits "recent" changes and becomes long-standing changes, at which point the vandalism will stay for potentially hours until someone notices it). So, when I see e.g. a minor change - especially a change in a fact from an IP that contradicts the previous page "time-concensus" - I tended to revert it rather than researching whether the new info was actually correct. So, once again, I'm sorry for being so hasty and I'd like to think I have learned my lesson.
Also: you're right - there is plenty of "obvious" vandalism around, but I don't feel that excuses the less obvious stuff that often sneaks under the radar. It's that sort of thing that annoys me most, since obvious vandalism can be ignored, but less obvious vandalism can affect information. Of course, the irony is that I myself was affecting information by reverting unnecessarily... but, as above, I think I've learnt my lesson there. And thanks again for tidying my mess. --RiverRubicon (talk) 17:58, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Re: Counting users
[edit]I was intrigued by the change you made to the rollback sweepstake page; I'd forgotten the existence of the NUMBEROFADMINS magic word, and didn't know there was a way to do it for other groups. But then I saw you'd done NUMBEROFROLLBACKERS as a template, and I wondered why isn't there a magic word to count them automatically? I posted an enhancement request at Bugzilla for a new {{USERSINGROUP}} {{NUMBERINGROUP}} magic word (somebody has renamed it), which would do that, so maybe somebody there will eventually add it. Good idea? I just thought I'd let you know, since it was your template that gave me the idea. • Anakin (contribs • complaints) 22:29, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- A good suggestion, but one that would apparently requiure a schema change and be quite slow for large user groups. Which means we're probably stuck with using a bot to update it for now – Gurch 03:51, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Syndicate image
[edit]Thanks for doing the FRU on the Syndicate screenshot. I got bored of repeatedly having to redo those tags on all the screenshots that I uploaded, in some cases three or four times over as the requirements kept changing. Unfortunately, a lot of images just died because I got annoyed of having to keep redo-ing the same things over and over with little-to-no clue about what it was I was doing wrong/supposed to do. I once spent nearly an hour looking up how to add an FRU to an image and eventually got bored and decided to never post images again. Far too much hassle. So thanks for keeping some of my efforts alive on the Wiki.

[edit]Orphaned non-free media (Image:HowStuffWorks.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:HowStuffWorks.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice
[edit]Hi,
As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.
We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.
You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.
We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Image copyright problem with File:Windows XP Emergency Shutdown.png
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Windows XP Emergency Shutdown.png. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

A note re: Talk:Rorschach test/2009 consensus review
[edit]Please be advised that I have recently conducted a review of the Rorschach test (formerly Rorschach inkblot test) talk page and archives. At some point, you have commented on the issue of the display and/or placement of the Rorschach inkblot image. Based on my understanding of your comment(s), I have placed you into one of three categories. I am issuing this note so that you can review how I have placed you, and to signal if this is an appropriate placement and/or to make known your current thoughts on this matter. You may either participate in discussion at the article talk page or leave a note at my talk page; but to keep things in one place, you should also clarify at Talk:Rorschach test/2009 consensus review/addendum. Longer statements may be made here or quick clarifications/affirmations based on several pre-written statements can be made here. Best regards, –xenotalk 14:47, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
- Further to the above, we would appreciate if you could briefly take the time to place yourself below one of the suggested statements here. If none of these statements represents your current position, please compose your own or simply sign "Not applicable" under "Other quick clarifications". Likewise sign as N/A if you do not want to participate further in this debate. If you choose not to respond then you will likely not be counted with respect to further consensus-determining efforts. –xenotalk 14:40, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments on this pg's AfD. So far most people agree that it's not a valid dab, but there are 3 different recommendations, deletion, redirect to the composer and redirect to the William Sweeney dab page, all of which I'd be happy enough with, although I still favour deletion. You recommended redirect to the composer and I was wondering if you had heard the composer referred to as William John Sweeney or if you just thought he was the most likely candidate for this name? World domination or the aim to "take over the world"
[edit]What you call "original research is not that at all. Please discuss this issue with me on the page's Talk page. The article should be probably deleted, and a DAB page maybe made. Most of the stuff on the page is "original research." But not the connection to the Protocols of Zion. --Ludvikus (talk) 17:12, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
I've suggested merging World Domination into The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. I know this may sound crazy but please check out the present status of the first article. Discussion is at Talk:The Protocols of the Elders of Zion#Merger proposal. Thanks. Steve Dufour (talk) 14:43, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
If you feel that the 02:41 16 August 2009 version of World domination is better than the current version, please feel free to incorporate as much material from that version as you like into the current version. If you do this, please add {{fact}}, {{whom}}, {{dubious}} and similar tags for all statements not backed by citations.
If you feel that any of the stuff about the The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is relevant, please make sure it has citations to the original book, or to some dependable source linking it (books by nutcases are only reliable sources as to the beliefs of their authors). This was not done in the alternative article that someone created. Since The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is fiction, presumably it belongs in the fiction category.--Toddy1 (talk) 08:52, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion decline
[edit]Hey there - I was wondering if you could expand on your decline to speedy delete Category:States and territories established in 1162. The reason you gave was "part of a set", however, "part of a set" is not one of the exceptions laid out in WP:CSD#C1. If you look at my deleted contributions, you will see numerous categories that were "part of a set" that I tagged for deletion that were deleted as C1. Please re-evaluate your decision to decline. Thanks, 70.150.94.194 (talk) 15:21, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not an admin and so I cannot view your deleted contributions. I did not mean to mislead you into thinking I was. I untagged that category when I saw it because I thought the reason was lousy. What's the point of deleting it? It does no harm. It may be used eventually, in which case the prepared category header and parent categories are already in place and will not need to be reconstructed. There is no reason to waste good edits and admin time on cleaning up stuff like that, since after all there is no deadline.
- C1 is a provision to delete such categories but never has CSD policy said anything must be deleted. What it says is: "The criteria for speedy deletion specify the only cases in which administrators have broad consensus support to, at their discretion, bypass deletion discussion and immediately delete Wikipedia pages or media" (underline added). The category is also part of the navigational list. Your tagging those categories is my opinion not helpful. You should take it to Categories for discussion if you feel strongly about it and want a fuller discussion. I note you received some similar opinion at User talk:Fastily#Speedy deletion decline and User talk:Ckatz#Speedy deletion declines. • Anakin (talk) 20:13, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
- I was going to come back and point out the faults in your reasoning, but it now seems unnecessary since an admin has already speedy deleted the category per the reasoning I had originally tagged it. I think this shows your removal of the speedy tag was very innapropriate, particularly since you aren't an admin yourself. The fact one did delete it per my reasoning shows it wasn't the type of obvious case that would otherwise be appropriate for a non-admin to remove. Either way, the point is now moot, but I hope you will consider this before removing a C1 speedy deletion tag in the future. 70.150.94.194 (talk) 17:04, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, I think you were right, from the beginning, and I'm sorry. I had been working with the categories like "Musical groups established in 1962" and so on, and was thinking along those lines. But you're right -- we're much less likely to suddenly discover new states and territories established in 1162 A.D. I still wouldn't have tagged it myself, but I shouldn't have untagged it. I will think more carefully in future. • Anakin (talk) 19:00, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject Java and Portal
[edit]I recently posted the following text on Wikipedia regarding the creation of a new computing-related project:
'WikiProject Java is a Wikipedian community that aims to better organize information in articles related to the Java programming language and its platform.
- If I'm cor-rec-to, there are about 900 articles on Java technology in Wikipedia, which may be more than ALL other programming languages articles combined...
- At least, it's more than for C++, and there IS a C++ WikiProject...
- And it's MUCH more than the .NET WikiProject with 82 articles...
- There is also a Ruby project and a Python portal so...
- Now you can also see a proposal for the Java Portal (temp location).'
