- Hi, just a reminder to please maintain the thread on your DYK nomination templates by listing new hooks as ALT1, ALT2, etc, and striking through rather than overwriting the original hook. This maintains the thread for other editors to view the progress of the nomination. See what I did for you on this nomination. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 21:34, 21 May 2016 (UTC)
- Also, please be aware that hooks should have a space between the ellipsis and "that". Yoninah (talk) 21:38, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

- Ignore this message. It was the result of another editor messing up the addition of a nomination and accidentally commenting out several templates on the DYK nominations page. No action needed from you. ~ RobTalk 11:57, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for your DYK nomination. FYI, when you propose a new hook, you should put it at the bottom of the thread prefaced by a new number, in this case ALT1. (Later revisions can be numbered ALT2, ALT3, etc.) This retains the history of the nomination and helps prep builders like myself see the hooks that were rejected and approved. You can see how I reformatted the nomination and added your signature line to the time that you proposed ALT1. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 21:44, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

[edit]DYK transclusion
[edit]Hi... Re this edit when you added 'template' before the DYK nomination for Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks, the transclusion was actually correct without the 'template' prefix. Your edit summary noted that the nomination is not appearing correctly, and thanks for trying to fix it, but FYI that problem occurs when there are too many templates on a single page. In other words, it happens when the page gets too long, and is then fixed when all the nominations from an earlier day have been completed so they are all removed from the page. No need to worry when this happens (or that the same problem is now affecting your nomination as other nominations have been added ahead of it); all will be fixed in time. :) Regard, EdChem (talk) 00:42, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

COI
[edit]HI, I've read your user page and appreciate your forthrightness regarding declaring the conflict of interest with BYU. That's good and you seem also to have some sort of GLAM mentor. Still, I am concerned because COI is an issue and you seem to say that you are actually being paid to promote BYU here on Wikipedia. You really, really should not be editing articles about it, in my opinion. Has anyone else addressed this? - Sitush (talk) 19:01, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Sitush: Are there any specific articles that you are concerned about? Amgisseman(BYU) (talk) 19:14, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
- No, it is just a general observation. COI, and especially paid editing, is a contentious thing here. I realise that you are churning out DYKs, GAs etc but, for example, it isn't that long ago that there was a project here called Gibraltarpedia or something similar that involved creating loads of articles about Gibraltar and got mired in a mess of paid COI etc concerns. I'm surprisingly unfamiliar with GLAM but I see a big difference between galleries etc opening themselves up for access to resources and actually writing about the galleries etc themselves. I may be in the minority here, I'm not sure. - Sitush (talk) 19:22, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
- BTW, in your case and that of your BYU colleagues (Rachel Helps (BYU) etc), while it is understandable that the BYU resources concentrate on LDS members, you are "sort of" promoting the LDS when writing all these articles. I'm not trawling through them to see if it is explicit promotion, and indeed it probably is not, but that is roughly what got Gibraltarpedia into trouble. If the people etc matter then they will almost certainly get articles sooner or later anyway. - Sitush (talk) 20:06, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
- Hello @Sitush:. We do try to adhere to notability standards and NPOV, as well as the guidelines at Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Library/Cultural Professionals. We also do have many collections related to Mormon history. For many collections, we simply add a link to the individual's papers from their already-existing page. We also try to improve existing pages related to our collections with improved citations. Amgisseman(BYU) has been submitting a lot of DYKs related to Mormon topics, but it's not in excess of one per day (and there are other topics that have received a similar amount of attention because of interested editors). Please let me know if you have specific concerns with our editing. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 20:24, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
- I have already raised my concern. Put bluntly, I think you are in breach of our terms of use because of being paid to edit. However, I have emailed a couple of people whom I consider to have far more knowledge about this sort of thing than myself. I may well be missing some nuance in the terms or indeed in WP:COI. - Sitush (talk) 20:31, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
- Well, it turns out those people are uncomfortable in principle with what is going on but uncertain of what to do about it. A bit like me! There is, of course, also WP:MEAT, although you're definitely mostly editing pretty obscure people and so unlikely to need to gang up against some other contributor. The entire thing is a mess but it looks like it might be a mess caused by acceptance of GLAM. - Sitush (talk) 06:13, 22 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Sitush: After reviewing the Gibraltarpedia story, I think there are significant differences between their editing and ours. Firstly, the library itself doesn't benefit monetarily from our edits. There is increased visibility for some items in our collections, and those are free for public viewing. We do often edit on Mormon topics, but we are removed enough from church headquarters that we are free to make edits like on Leonard J. Arrington's page and Battle at Fort Utah. We've also worked on Mormon women's pages, which haven't received the attention they deserve, not because they lack notability, but because previous editors haven't written much about them, like Annie Poon and Lucinda Lee Dalton.

- I also don't have any history of working for Wikimedia. I've tried to develop procedures for ensuring that we don't create false consensus. For instance, I never review Amgisseman's DYK submissions or GA nominations, and my other student worker doesn't either (nor do they review mine or each others'). I'm guessing the main concern is the frequency of LDS topics on the DYK page. Since there are other topics that frequently appear on the DYK feature because of enthusiastic non-paid editing, if this is an issue, perhaps a new regulation on frequency of specific DYK topics should be created? If you have future concerns, please address them on my talk page, as Amgisseman pursues other employment soon.Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:49, 22 September 2016 (UTC)
- @Rachel Helps (BYU): no, my main concern is breach of our terms of use and COI. I don't even look at DYK and wasn't aware of what had been going on until I fixed up an article that Amgisseman had edited. This is not a "future concern" but rather a current one. Although, obviously, it will also apply to whomsoever you may employ next. - Sitush (talk) 17:16, 22 September 2016 (UTC)

Sources for Leslie Norris page
[edit]Hi Alyssa, you mentioned to me that the two biographies the library has on Leslie Norris are checked out, but when I searched Ancestry I found that he has been included in the Biography & Genealogy Master Index (BGMI) and there is a long list of books that have biographical information about him. You can search the library's catalog for any of those titles to see if we have any of those books that you can then use to get some of your citations filled in while you're waiting for those books to be turned back in.
