Operation Nordwind order of battle

Hello i didn't find anything on the template that explain why i got decline if you don't mind could you explain so that i could improve it Thanks —Preceding 69.133.146.14 comment added by 69.133.146.14 (talk) 00:28, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Hello, the problem is lists of military units in a particular battle are usually not listed in a separate article. It is usually listed in the article on the battle in the information box {see Siege of Yorktown for an example. Separate lists are not made unless it is too long. I hope that helps, if you have any other questions please feel free to ask me. Best, Alpha Quadrant talk 00:45, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Don't you think its too long if not could you help in where i should put it on the main page —Preceding 69.133.146.14 comment added by 69.133.146.14 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 00:53, 14 December 2010 (UTC).

It would probably be best to list it under the "strength section of the information box. Alpha Quadrant talk 01:18, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Don't you think it should have something in-depth kinda like the Battle of the Bulge order of battle which is link the main page. can this page be just like that? 69.133.146.14 comment added by 69.133.146.14 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.133.146.14 (talk) 01:28, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Playcast Media Systems

I have no idea if this is posted in the right place. I am new to Wikipedia and I would appreciate some more detailed comment as to why my first submission - Playcast Media Systems - was not acceptable. I've tried to keep it brief and backed up as much as possible with relevant sources/references, never expanding on anything other than was listed on these websites. I would very much appreciate your assistance on this, outlining what I need to do to get it accepted as your Talk was not very detailed and I was unsure.

Apologies, the last review was made by one of the new members of the project. I have left him a note that resubmitted submissions should have a full review before declining. The issues were addressed and I have accepted. Best, --Alpha Quadrant talk 14:41, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

That's great, many thanks for the input. I now feel more confident to add more pages to Wikipedia. Thanks for the prompt reply, very much appreciated. Dtpl01753 (talk) 11:13, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

WP Star Trek

FYI-The problem was with this change, that was causing the title on the main project page to show "Special Changes": [1]. I think it's fixed now. (hopefully!) --Funandtrvl (talk) 03:13, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

Actually, if you could somehow have the "changes" template display this page from toolserver: [2], that would even be better, since it shows all changes in the articles that have talk pgs linked to the project's talk banner template. --Funandtrvl (talk) 05:12, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
I see that you reverted my attempted corrections. I still do not understand why the WP:Star trek main page is showing "Special:RecentChangesLinked/Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Star Trek articles by quality log" in its title in IE8. Do you have any suggestions that would return the project page's title to display WP:WikiProject Star Trek? --Funandtrvl (talk) 20:06, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
I have tried on a few occasions (and failed) to fix the title. The new recent changes feed was including entries from the userspace and was not including all of the articles. WikiProject Stargate has the same problem. A few WikiProject have overcome this issue. You could ask there. Best, --Alpha Quadrant talk 20:15, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Alpha Quadrant, just wanted to check in on your state w/r/t the article assessments for the Public Policy Initiative -- are you still interested in helping out? Conduit metaphor on hold

Thank you for the speedy review of my attempted submission of the Conduit metaphor article. Having spent over a hundred hours since Reddy's permission to condense his original article for Wikipedia and make it public domain, I'm really determined to get this right. It was easy to establish notability and verifiability, but the neutrality part was a tough one. I edited out large amounts of text in the original as I was rewriting because of things that seemed like assertions rather than facts. I'd like some sense of how radical or subtle my changes must be in order to get a reasonable submission. At least know that I'm sufficiently proud of the article's condensation that I'd be willing to hang it out there as is and let other editors (and myself, of course) hack away at it. Nevertheless, I won't be discouraged if you feel something major is required to get it right. I realize your time is at a premium and your message back could be brief, but some feedback and guidance would be very much valued. I'm determined to help make Wikipedia better, even if it's only correcting people's grammar, spelling and style, my expertise. No matter what happens, thanks for all you do. Conversation with User:Dusti about WP:BLPPROD

Hi,

I started a conversation with User:Dusti on his talk page about his use of the BLPPROD process. He has said on my talk page that you looked over his edits and said there was nothing wrong with the BLPPROD tags he placed. If that is the case, I want to convince you that they were not a correct use of the BLPPROD process. Specifically, of the four articles I was referring to, one wasn't even a biography, two had sources, and one was about a person who was dead. Of those articles, one clearly should have been deleted, and another two I think might be on non-notable people. However, they clearly aren't eligible for deletion by BLPPROD, as that process only applies to biographies of living people that have no sources. I'm not saying that it was wrong to nominate the articles for deletion, only that BLPPROD was not the right process to use. If you do agree with me on this, could you perhaps talk to User:Dusti about it, as he seems to trust your opinion. Calathan (talk) 20:21, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

Irish Left Review

Hi AQ. Thanks for looking at this page so quickly. What I'm wondering is this: The link at the bottom is to the site itself. A glance at the site makes clear that the political stance is as I describe. The Information I provide is based on their information. As for notability, how does one establish notability for a counter-culture site? This is a question that has been puzzling me for some time. I'm prepared to accept that it doesn't come above the line, but, you know, nobody would have mentioned City Lights Bookshop for at least 10 years if they had wikipedia back then. At what point do we decide that this is something too insignificant to provide information about? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Treeinthebog (talkcontribs) 14:53, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

Yes, that source was a first party source. It was created by the organization. Sources independent of the organisation (third party) are needed. Paper newspaper articles, online articles and books, from other media would be reliable, they do not have to be in English. As this is a magazine it has most likely received coverage in other media sources. Can you find one, perhaps two reliable independent sources? Thank you, --Alpha Quadrant talk 15:23, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks AQ. No, the problem is that Irish Left Review is part of an emerging left-wing information and analysis movement in Ireland. Since one of the purposes of magazines like Irish Left Review is to circumvent and counter the media consensus, it is completely ignored by the print media and their digital offshoots. My problem here is, since WP requires independent confirmation it tends to support establishment sources and is not in a position to provide knowledge on emerging events. Of course, it can be argued that such is not the role of an encyclopedia, and I'd find that hard to argue with. However, Irish Left Review is in existence for two years now. It is "something", yet because it is ignored by the establishment media and has not been written about it is difficult to support an article on it. It is *cited* by other sources (the writers William Wall and Dave Lordan write for it, for example) but that only proves its existence, something that is hardly in doubt!

I'm not sure I'm making myself clear.

Articles for Creation - Fleetcomm

[[3]]

Hi there,

Thank you for reviewing my article. As you can probably see, this is my first such article.

Could you please give me a quick pointer (or two). Which parts of the article need more referencing, and which parts of the article are referenced with inadequate references - are all the references bad, or is it just one or two, and are there parts of the article which require referencing which aren't referenced?

Thanks, —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mpt1327 (talkcontribs) 22:16, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

Hello Mpt1327, the problem is not that the article is unsourced, the issue is that the sources are not reliable. The first source is affiliated with Fleetcomm so it is a first party source. First party sources are considered unreliable because the company controls what is written on their website, and they could print false information so Wikipedia requires that all articles have information be covered in third party sources. The second source is a forum, forums and blogs are not considered reliable because it often includes personal opinions. The last source is fleetcomm's own website, which is also a first party source. Can you find 2, possibly three third party reliable sources? Examples of good reliable sources would be newspaper articles, both online, or offline are fine, or book publications. I hope this helps, --Alpha Quadrant talk 20:28, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Willing to wait and see what this editor does in the future, they seem to mainly be tagging articles with List of people who have claimed to be Jesus, List of people who have been considered deities, List of Buddha claimants and so on. Most of the article subjects List-tagged seem to belong on these various Lists (and some have been in error - which is what I was reacting to). Students in my class adding enhancements and new entries

Hi!

I teach computer science at Virginia Tech. This semester I asked teams of students in a class on information retrieval to make some additions to wikipedia, or to enhance existing entries. Some of them had a great deal of difficulty. Is there an easy way to aid them, for example a list of tutorial pages?

One group made an entry but it never successfully was added. It can be seen at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:TREC_EVAL_Program&oldid=401728115

I'm not sure what to do so it can become a proper entry. Can you help? Many thanks, Ed Fox (fox@vt.edu) (Edfox0714 (talk) 19:55, 18 December 2010 (UTC))

Hello, you might wish to try Wikipedia:School and university projects and list the class there. For articles students are currently working on you may wish to add {{Educational assignment}} to the page. This will let other editors know that it is part of an assignment and they will be less likely to request deletion. If the students have specific questions I would be happy to help. oh cool... ok so...... how does this work exactly?? Jeffersonnnnn (talk) 22:31, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

It is quite simple really, if you have any questions you can feel free to ask me. If I notice you are struggling with something I will correct it and/or tell you how to fix it. You can also talk to me live through the Wikipedia help channel as I am often there. Best, Alpha Quadrant talk 18:25, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
oh ok that makes sense. a question i really do have is how to cite references, i never really understood that Jeffersonnnnn (talk) 22:31, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
to reiterate as a question, how do you cite references in an article? Jeffersonnnnn (talk) 18:56, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
I apologize for the rather late reply, to insert references there has to be a section header for them to go under. Usually it already exists. If it does not then insert a section header like this:
==References==
<references/>

If there is already a section header you can proceed to insert the references at the end of the paragraph it verifies. Here is an example:

Wikipedia is a encyclopedia. Anyone can edit Wikipedia. <ref> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia Wikipedia </ref>

Wikipedia is a encyclopedia. Anyone can edit Wikipedia. [1]

References

I hope that helps you. There are two pages that cover this, they may be of use to you, they are WP:AFCRE and WP:REFB. Best, Alpha Quadrant talk 02:58, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

thanks! that really does help! Jeffersonnnnn (talk) 05:22, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Artice for creation - Frontier Economics

Hi Alpha Quadrant, thanks for reviewing my article and for your useful comment. Please note that this is the third version of the article and I tried to make it sound as neutral as possible, without breaking the notability condition of course. I also looked at other similar articles, such as NERA or McKinsey, and I don't feel that my article is in any way more 'advertising-like'. Anyway, based on your latest comment, I took it a step further in terms of neutrality and I have deleted the information about Frontier Economics being one of the top 10 economic consultancies. This is the only information in my article that can possibly be regarded as advertising. I do not see any additional ways how to improve the article at this stage. I hope this makes the article more neutral and resolves all your concerns. Please let me know if you have any additional comments or suggestions. Thanks a lot!Macgorky (talk) 10:33, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

I have added further comments to the submission. This is the last thing that needs fixing. The submission can be found at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Frontier Economics Best, Alpha Quadrant talk 18:09, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Thanks a lot Alpha Quadrant, I will put together a short history of the company and add it to the article as soon as possible. Is there any time limit for article creation process that I should be aware of? Many thanks.Macgorky (talk) 19:01, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Just to let you know I have edited the article, adding a bit of history and moving the work references into separate section, as it seemed more natural. Let me know if you have any other comments, thanks.Macgorky (talk) 15:53, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi Alpha Quadrant, thanks a lot for reviewing my article. I've just realised there is still your Note for other reviewers visible at the begining of the article. Is it ok for me to delete it, as it appears to be left there by mistake? Thanks 94.112.207.204 (talk) 16:40, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Done I have removed the note. I think the reviewer just forgot to remove the comment. Happy new year, Alpha Quadrant talk 19:21, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Article for review: Interoperability Concepts and Mutualink

I remain totally confused about my article's status. I thought that I moved it to Mainspace but I cannot find it. I received notification that it is in a queue to be reviewed (six days ago). Who is reviewing it, how will they contact me, and, in general, what is going on? I have read the on line help manuals but have found nothing that explains this process. Can you provide some insight? Thanks! Telecom881 (talk) 12:22, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi Alpha is busy, your article is now waiting for being reviewed. It isn't in mainspace yet. Petrb (talk) 12:28, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
Hello Telecom881, there is currently a backlog at Articles for Creation and reviews are taking much longer. You will receive a message on your talk page when the reviewer finishes reviewing. Thank you for your patience, Alpha Quadrant talk 18:09, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

On his user page, he's indicated that you've adopted him. I can't find any interactions between him and you, so could you update or clarify that box as appropriate? Thanks. Netalarmtalk 19:21, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Christmas Card

happy holidays from PPI

Hi Alpha_Quadrant, you previously assessed articles with WikiProject: U.S. Public Policy. Your input is appreciated, and contributed to the research in the Public Policy Initiative. The project has been pretty exciting; there are over 25 university classes signed up for spring semester. This project is about more than public policy; it is about using Wikipedia as a teaching tool and recruiting (and hopefully retaining) college students as editors. If you are still interested we will be starting more rounds of assessments in the new year. I am the research analyst for the project, feel free to contact me. If you already responded definitively, I apologize for not following up properly, I just had a baby and have been a bit overwhelmed. Happy holidays, ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 01:44, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Barnstar

Thanks; I do appreciate it. I'm not really averse to the odd barnstar, honest. It's a nice thing.

I cleared AFC again, but I do wonder if there is much point. I'm starting to think more about whether AFC should exist, as such. I'd like to do some stats analysis on it, and also on newly-created live articles by new users - how many 'survive' more than a few days. But I suppose that'll wait.

Anyway - happy Xmas, and all that. Thanks, see ya soon.  Chzz  ►  16:42, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

New adoption - D_C_Weber?

Dear Alpha Quadrant:

I was recently reading about the adoptee program at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user/Adoptee%27s_Area/Adopters. You are on the list as a volunteer and your interests seem to match mine. Although I have been a Wiki member for a few years, I am a editor just starting out. I tried to edit a Wiki page, but due to my inexperience, I was reverted and 24hr blocked. If you are willing to mentor me, I would really appreciate your help.

My user page is at : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:D_c_weber The page and section tht I would like to edit is at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tests_of_general_relativity#Perihelion_precession_of_Mercury

Regards,

Dave Weber D c weber (talk) 14:49, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

Sure, I would be happy to adopt you. You were blocked for violating the three revert rule. You may only revert someone else's actions three times in a 24 hour period. Best, Alpha Quadrant talk 15:57, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
Alpha, I would like to put some added text into the article Tests of general relativity, because it is a non-neutral point-of-view. What is the best way to do this? Should I first add to the talk page? Should I add a "NPOV" tag to the top of the article?D c weber (talk) 15:18, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
I think you should try adding the text to the article. If anyone objects or removes it I think the best course of action would be to discuss it on the talk page. Best, Alpha Quadrant talk 19:02, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

Articles for Creation: John Lawson

Dear Alpha Quadrant, I appreciate your reviewing my draft article, and I'm sorry for the delay in responding to your declining my proposed article. I wondered if you could clarify your comment for me "We cannot accept unsourced suggestions or sources that are not reliable per the verifiability policy. Please provide reputable, third-party sources with your suggestions. Third party sources are needed both to establish the verifiability of the submission as well as its notability." I used 3 published sources for this biography, more than occur in many biography stubs that exist in Wikipedia. Can you let me know why these books and Horn Book Award webpage do not count as reputable sources? Or was most of the biography fine but you wanted a particular statement referenced or removed? I would greatly appreciate clarification! Thank you! You can find the page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/John_Lawson_%28children%27s_author%29 CHrabbit (talk) 19:29, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

John Lawson (children's author) article

Dear Alpha Quadrant, thank you so much for your comments and creating the article. I was unclear on this process but appreciate your clarification that I can directly create a page. Thank you for your help!CHrabbit (talk) 14:57, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
