- Board members on Working Groups

URL shortener
[edit]T56459 – Tiny url like system for Wikimedia sites. mw:Requests for —comment/URL shortener. mw:Extension:UrlShortener. meta:https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_URL_Shortener/Archive_1. and also other pages linked from those.
Is at meta:Special:UrlShortener or https://w.wiki/4e and https://w.wiki/r7 (mobile links get separate codes). Because it's on Meta, it is listed in meta:Special:SpecialPages but not w:Special:SpecialPages. Though w:Special:Version says the extension is installed.

[edit]Dark mode and colour themes
[edit]In no particular order.
- T122924 – Merge Extension:Theme into core
- T128044 – Add support for auto night mode for Android. Query in which droid version was night mode added?
- T210876 – [FEATURE REQUEST] Change app theme based on system brightness level for iOS. Good idea, but I think there are valid cases for having positive polarity with low brightness. Note iOS 13 is meant to have a much-touted dark mode.
- T26070 – Provide a dark skin (CSS)
- Broussard, Mitchel. "Official Wikipedia App for iOS Introduces Dark Mode and iMessage Sticker Pack". www.macrumors.com. Retrieved 2019-09-26.. Dark and sepia for iOS app released 2017. (Not sure when Black was added, may have been later.)
- Dark mode and other colour themes topic at AMC.
- T206094 – Add night mode to Minerva cool trick using (invert + rotatehue(180°)) to reverse the lightness but retain the hue.

[edit]Time zones again
Our preferences pages have a timezone setting, is it used anywhere? Time stamps on-wiki are displayed as UTC, and the only parser functions I can find deal with universal time or server time (also UTC for MediaWiki servers).
I found mw:Extension:TimeConvert (a parser function) and mw:Extension:AllTimeZones (a tag). Both take the explicit zone and don't hook into pref's. Plus neither appears to me installed on en.wp or mw.
Contemplating whether to ask this at w:en:Wikipedia:Village Pump (technical), mw:Project:Support desk, meta:Tech, …

APC and Paralympics

- "Between the London and Rio Games, funding dried up, with the APC suffering severe cutbacks from the government, and Wikimedia Australia was de-funded by the Wikimedia Foundation. Fortunately, additional funding was provided by the National Research Council."

- JBH presented information that LH was a paid copywriter.
- Tender by University of Canberra Institute of National Sports Studies to Australian Paralympic Committee for project History of the Paralympic Movement in Australia (HoPAU).
- Bidgee claimed that LH was not paid, but didn't reply to JBH's further analysis.

[edit]Gender notes
[edit]Funcrunch makes a distinction between man/woman (gender) versus male/female (sex) at wikidata:User talk:Kaldari/Sex or gender. Kaldari responds that most languages don't have seaparte groups of words to make that distinction. Also see wikidata:Wikidata:Project_chat#Conflation of trans status with gender identities.
To create when I'm feeling brave: Incubator/Gender. Either as an essay on gender issues or a statement of where I stand or maybe two separate pages.
Referrer data
[edit]Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy)/RfC:_Wikimedia_referrer_policy (2017) Some excellent points on both sides. origin-when-cross-origin
seems a good compromise to me.

[edit]Ipse dixit
[edit]This exchange from Iridescent's talk page. Good to see some clever humour in these dark times.
- Some terms could come in handy:
- WMF: Bill of attainder
- enWP: Quo warranto?
- WMF: Ipse dixit (or ukase, if you please).
- enWP: Quo warranto?
- Kablammo (talk) 19:25, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
- Also of note: Dipsy brexit (or uk arse, if you please). Martinevans123 (talk) 21:46, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
- WMF: Bill of attainder
- Sure, although while we're in this subject I'd like to register a protest at the use of the term in camera by ArbCom for this case. To someone untrained in legalese, that sounds like the opposite of what it means, as "in front of the camera" would denote a public hearing. Just saying the case will be held in private would be enough. — Amakuru (talk) 08:22, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
- A process which, if not carefully confined, can lead to [a] modern-day version of Camera Stellata. Kablammo (talk) 12:23, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
Diffusing conflict
[edit]Spaces at end of sentences
[edit]“to ease editing I'd like to insert an extra space at the end of each sentence (so two spaces between sentences, like you were taught to do in the old days on a typewriter). Of course this doesn't affect the rendered page the reader sees. I know it sounds minor but it makes it just a scrunch easier to scan through and find a passage you're looking for within the jumble of markup with in a paragraph. … Actually, I prefer to put a linebreak wherever a sentence end also has a ref, because I find this really makes finding things easy, but some people find this too radical.” EEng 19:55, 26 August 2019 (UTC) [3] §August 2019 to-do list.
“my guess is that if you put in linebreaks we'll get an infestation of gnomes taking them out again” David Eppstein, ibid.
Aside: noting EEng's use of {{stack}}
to place the image next to to another one.

Iridescent talk
[edit]Went there because something under §Because Iri is better than Cent. [no point direct-linking before it gets archived] was mentioned on one of the frampages.
- He|she|they give some excellent insight into the history of ArbPol.
Some other comments caught my eye (retaining the full time stamps to aid Ctrl+F):
- “Quite possibly. The paranoid would say that the situation is being engineered as such by the WMF. I'm not in that bunch but I am very unhappy with the recent usurpations of established processes and now with various CHI proposals which, it seems, are driven by a very small group of people who are working in the SanFran bubble and will brook little criticism if only on the grounds that such stuff makes them feel unsafe. Now who's paranoid?” - Sitush (talk) 14:08, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
- “To work for the WMF, get a grant from them etc, you pretty much have to have a certain cultural mindset and we know that the mindset in question is not one that often aligns with consensus on en-WP. Given the WMF tendency to impose stuff, conduct pseudo-consultations on meta where criticism is stamped upon, … cultural imperialism driven by a very small number of people who are increasingly extending their remit, as any bureaucracy tends to do. …” - Sitush (talk) 22:27, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
- Aside: I keep seeing this antipathy toward Meta crop up in various places, including by (WMF) peeps in meta consultations acknowledging people's reluctance to engage there.
- “Yes, I agree there's been a cultural mismatch and they've become out of touch and aloof. But they're not the evil power-seeking conspiracy that so many people are making them out to be - they're essentially a good bunch of people trying to do the best they can. And we do need them.” Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 09:16, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
