Egoli Granite Grassland (Mesic Highveld Grassland) is an endangered vegetation type of the Witwatersrand in Gauteng, South Africa.
Distribution
[edit]Egoli Granite Grassland occurs over an area centred on the Johannesburg Dome, bounded by central Johannesburg to the south, Thembisa to the east, Muldersdrift to the west and extending until the vicinity of Lanseria International Airport in the north.[1] This is the only vegetation type entirely endemic to Witwatersrand region.

[edit]The Egoli Granite Grassland is considered endangered, and only about three per cent of the vegetation type is conserved in statutory reserves (namely Melville Koppies and the Diepsloot Nature Reserve). More than two thirds of this vegetation type has been lost, mostly to urbanisation.[2]
