Added Shenkeng light rail to sandbox; requested update

Mind asking an administrator to update this template from the recent sandbox code? I had added the Shenkeng light rail to the code at 18:16 (UTC/GMT) on 20 October 2021. Edgar Searle (talk) 05:25, 22 October 2021 (UTC)

Done, though for the record it would have been nice if I didn't have to do the testcases myself. Primefac (talk) 07:03, 22 October 2021 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 18 December 2021 (Qom Urban Railway)

Hi, File:Qom Metro Logo.PNG was deleted from commons 18 December 2021 so now just causing lots of redlink errors in articles KylieTastic (talk) 18:22, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

@KylieTastic:  Not done for now: What should it be replaced with? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:15, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
Hey Redrose64 i could not identify any reasonable replacements at this time. Qom Urban Railway has has no images, and the image I presume to be the actual icon (part of this) would appear to be too complex to be reasonable to use. As such I would deem no icon is preferable to a rough interpretation or the current errors. KylieTastic (talk) 19:22, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
Done After a sendbox test, I removed the entry. There are no ill effects at e.g. Template:Rapid transit in Iran where the logo is merely omitted instead of showing as a redlink. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:06, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi, Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Logos of rail transport companies of China appears to have been finally settled and the following images have been deleted that are used here

As these have been deemed not to be below the 'Threshold of originality' for China I can suggest nothing but removing them (at least for now) as they are causing a few hundred article red-link errors (see CAT:MISSFILE) often in the infobox titles (example Aotizhongxin station) which is ugly and not reader friendly. Template-protected edit request on 16 January 2022 (Taipei Metro)

Hi, I've updated most of Taiwan's metro icons with "rail icons". Changes to sandbox were made with 3 updates. Testcases were also added. Twoggo (talk) 05:01, 16 January 2022 (UTC)

I am genuinely not sure how I feel about these changes. The crux of most of them seems to be changing an image file into a call to {{ric}}, which then calls the same image file. What is the purpose of that? Why not change the file call of the few icons that are different? Primefac (talk) 10:00, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
I'm thinking in terms of easier maintenance. It aligns all Taiwan's metros to use the same templates which are managed by Module:Adjacent stations. In addition, any changes to these icons (color, size, link) can be made at each individual metro's module page with a lessened risk of affecting other metros and the main rint template's code. Twoggo (talk) 21:39, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
There are intervening edits by Mackensen. Can you confirm these are ready to be made live too? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:32, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
I think it makes sense to pipe things to ric (short for {{rail icon}}) and was considering implementing similar changes elsewhere. It keeps the logic in one place. Mackensen (talk) 00:04, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Time to convert to a module?

In the last few months I've seen what looks to be half of the entries in this (massive) switch template turned into calls to {{rcr}}, which in turn calls Module:Adjacent stations. Both for ease of updating and the (some would say inconsequential) decrease in server load, would it make sense to move this all into a module itself so that it can more directly reference Adjacent stations and have better logic? Primefac (talk) 07:15, 7 April 2022 (UTC)

It would make sense that any entry that has an Adjacent stations module, pull directly what it needs from the relevant module without any code in this template. This by itself should probably reduce the amount of code left by a large amount. Gonnym (talk) 21:01, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Dark mode support for icons

Currently, all icons are colored in black given the default light mode that Wikipedia uses. However, since Wikipedia offers a dark background mode (mainly on mobile), perhaps it would be worth considering to make white-colored or dark mode-compatible versions of the icons.

This can be seen with how the Wikipedia logo changes to white when using either the Wikipedia-offered dark mode or browser extensions such as Dark Reader which can dynamically change webpages to "dark mode". Ganmatthew (talk) 06:45, 3 May 2022 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 5 May 2022 (Changchun Rail Transit)

Hi, I realized that this template references the CRT system lines with redirects with Changchun Subway disambiguation instead of direct links that use as disambiguator the same name as the system (Changchun Rail Transit).

There was a main page move on 21 ago 2019, when Changchun Subway became Changchun Rail Transit.

My question is if it is possible to transfer all links so them will use the official system name Changchun Rail Transit. ZandDev (msg) 15:19, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Not done: looks like the Beihu line is the only link that works – the others still need to be created. And per WP:NOTBROKEN, readers will eventually be taken where they want or need to go without the need to replace an unbroken redirect. I've opened a section on the test cases page, where it is seen that the airport and Shuangyang lines still need to be created. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 20:31, 14 May 2022 (UTC)

 Pinggu

Can the Pinggu line in Beijing be changed to use black text instead of white? Currently, the white text is hard to read against the pink background. I'm not familiar with changing the font colour on these templates. NemesisAT (talk) 12:58, 14 May 2022 (UTC)

This indeed fails WCAG AA. The color is at Module:Adjacent stations/Beijing Subway. Gonnym (talk) 14:12, 14 May 2022 (UTC)
 Done. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 14:10, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
Note: Since this template uses the "Rail color" template, which invokes "Module:Adjacent stations", and since that module does not recognize the "text color" command, the text color had to be directly applied to the RouteBox template. Gonnym, if there is a better way to do that, like perhaps enabling the "text color" command in the module, feel free to apply that instead. P.I. Ellsworth - ed. put'r there 14:10, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
I don't, but probably the base module (or this template whenever it changes to Lua) should be modified to use Template:Greater color contrast ratio (and Template:Ensure AAA contrast ratio) so a white or black text color can be automatically selected. Gonnym (talk) 14:50, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
I'm not sure how it was fixed, but it has been fixed now. Thanks everyone NemesisAT (talk) 16:12, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
To editor NemesisAT: to see how it was done, go to the template page and near the top click on "View history". Then compare the two diffs of the edits I made. Just added "#000000", the hexadecimal code for the color black, in the 4th parameter of the RouteBox template. Easy peasy. Best to you, and good health to all! To editor Conige: your sandbox edits have been placed on the test page at Template:Rail-interchange/testcases#Lyon. Is that really what you want? Do you want symbols with backgrounds that are curved on the left, straight on the right? and did you really want to drop the "tr"? Won't its usages then be broken? P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'r there 20:31, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
Hello, thank you for placing my sandbox edits on the test page. During these sandbox edits I made tests on a preview page to see if it works the way I want, and indeed it does.
Icons with a red background and white letters designates transit types (métro, funicular, tramway...), I'll call them "network icons", and there are two types:
  • Network icons that are curved on the left and on the right designates the entire network of one transit type. These network icons should be used alone, without any line icon just after.
    • = métro network
    • = funicular network
    • = tramway network
    • = high-frequency bus lines network (28 lines)
    • = other bus lines network (more than 100 lines)
  • Network icons that are curved on the left and straight on the right are used when talking about one or many lines and placed just before the icon of a line (that contains its name, number, letter...). These network icons shouldn't be used alone, but with at least one line icon just after.
    • Examples:
      • = métro line A
      • = tramway line T1
      • = métro lines B and D
      • = tramway lines T2, T5 and T6
-
The 9 trolleybuses lines of Lyon (C1, C2, C3, C4, C11, C13, C14, C18, S6) are integrated in the bus network, so they don't have a specific network icon.
The high-frequency bus lines network is currently composed of 8 trolleybus lines and 20 bus lines, so its network icon ( ) shouldn't be linked to the page "Trolleybuses in Lyon".
-
In the following picture gallery, you can see how the icons are used in Lyon.

NJ Transit Meadowlands Rail Line was renamed to BetMGM Meadowlands Rail Line, I already changed the color code to the MGM Gold as was matched on the latest NJ Transit rail system map. The text color needs to be white. Should the letters be changed from MDW to MGM? Source: https://www.njtransit.com/press-releases/nj-transit-partners-betmgm-naming-rights-meadowlands-rail-line

    Mfs1013 (talk) 14:06, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

To editor Mfs1013: in terms of "text color", is [this] what you want? In terms of the change from MDW to MGM, it is still the Meadowlands, so I cannot detect any need to change that. What do you think? P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'r there 10:26, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

@Paine Ellsworth and Mfs1013: Please be aware that that combination (white text on pale gold) completely fails Wikipedia's mandatory accessibility requirements for colour contrast, as shown in this report. Black text would be fine. Bazza (talk) 12:51, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

Edit request 23 September 2022 Airport Station icons

Description of suggested change: I think there needs to be an alternate generic airport icon for rint. Some pages have been using Air transport which is an icon of an airplane pointing up. Use of that icon in {{rint|air|1}} would help.

    Also any links to both the air icons should have a shortcut to the IATA or ICAO airport code. For connections to JFK it would be {{rint|air|1|link=JFK}}

The text of Line 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, 13, 15 and 16 are in black. Also, the backgound color and the current text color (black) of Line 19 and 20 are under compliant issue. Unnamelessness (talk) 03:03, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

To editor Unnamelessness: see [test cases page] – Line 15 is not in black, it is in white and your edit changes it to black. How do you want to proceed? P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'r there 03:38, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
Paine Ellsworth Yes. The text of Line 15 needs to be black per the official site. Also, the text of Line 19 and Line 20 pefers to be white because the current status (black text and very dark blackground color) would result in accessiblity issue. I think the propsed change would correct it. Unnamelessness (talk) 04:59, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
    Okay then,  edited. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'r there 05:58, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
@Unnamelessness: Lines 17, 18 and 21 all fail accessibility and would benefit from having a text colour of black as well:
    Bazza (talk) 09:51, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
Examples of line 17 (left) and line 18 (right).
Bazza This is a bit complicated under these circumstances.
    • The legend of line 17 in reality is in white text. Plus, the accessibility issue is not that bad, so I don't think the text color should be changed to white.
    • Line 18, as far as I can tell, uses different colors of text in different stations, but as the black text is more commonly used and compliant, it is good to change.
    • The legend of line 21 is still unofficial, as it is just under construction, so I am okay to change. Unnamelessness (talk) 14:32, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
@Unnamelessness: I agree it is a bit complicated, but WP:ACCESSIBILITY and, in this case, MOS:COLOR are very clear that accessibility overrides just about anything else. Even though branding may use white text on a pale background, that is not a reason for text on a page to do the same if it cannot meet the highest contrast ratio. So the three lines in question here should all use black text on their branding background colour, including line 17 which achieves 3.58:1 for white text, and 5.86:1 for black text. The alternative is to place a plain-text label next to the legend (e.g. 17 17), but I suspect this will not be acceptable for the uses to which these template are put. Other systems have the same problem, such as London Trams where Wikipedia's text colour is black, even though the system's branding is white. Bazza (talk) 15:10, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
Bazza 7 Yes, this is where it becomes a bit annoying. I suspect it is because the size of the legend in reality is much bigger than this tiny little icon that makes the difference. Such combination would pass the standard of WCAG AA compliance for large text, which is 3:1, while it would fail the standard for the regular text, which is 4.5:1. While I agree the accessibility issue is the on top, I am wondering apart from the unacceptable plain-text, is there any other solution that can be taken as WP:COMPROMISE?      Not done: please make your requested changes to the template's sandbox first; see WP:TESTCASES. * Pppery * it has begun... 18:59, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
Templates such as {{IEOC line map}} and {{San Bernardino Line map}} correctly link the text "Arrow" to Arrow (rail line) (via redirect Arrow Line (Metrolink)), but the icon to the left of that text still links incorrectly to dab Arrow Line. A fix for this would be appreciated, even if we are unable to understand the semantics well enough to do so ourselves in the sandbox. Certes (talk) 10:18, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
The code there is unnecessarily complex; I'm trying to rewrite it. Mackensen (talk) 12:56, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
Fixed/hacked it for now, but would prefer if someone could rewrite it so it is cleaner. See also User talk:Zzyzx11#Add Arrow to rint. Zzyzx11 (talk) 12:59, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
Frankly I think the Metrolink stuff should just come out. These aren't even icons, they're text coloration. {{rail color box}} can do it, and better, rint doesn't buy you anything. Mackensen (talk) 13:01, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
Yes, I would probably prefer to revert it back to it basically was in 2018 and have rcb deal with the text. Zzyzx11 (talk) 13:18, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
@Useddenim and RickyCourtney: I believe I've replaced rint with rcb in all the relevant line templates; visually there's no obvious difference. Any objections? Mackensen (talk) 13:24, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
I replaced rint with rcb on all the Metrolink line articles as well, as the text coloration was being used in the stations tables listing their connections. Zzyzx11 (talk) 13:55, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
(IMHO) {{rint}} is easier and more intuitive to use than {{rcb}}, but you are correct about the coding issue. Why not change {{rint}} to a redirect to the code in {{rcb}}? Useddenim (talk) 15:29, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
My minor gripes with {{rcb}} as currently implemented is that the text is larger than with {{rint}} and that there's no way to supress the word "line" so you end up having it several times in the same page or same line. RickyCourtney (talk) 15:52, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
I suppose the question is what should be returned. The existing implementation isn't very helpful for an actual icon. Mackensen (talk) 23:35, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
However, the bottom line is that {{rint}} is more flexible (i.e. has more options) than {{rcb}}. Useddenim (talk) 16:41, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
Most of those options aren't being used, and none of them are being used for icons. Using rint as a convenience function for rendering colored text in arbitrary ways stretches its purpose. You couldn't use any of them as actual icons. Mackensen (talk) 18:28, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

Wrapper feedback requested 29 November 2022

Description of suggested change: I would like to ask for feedback about my new wrapper for Paris, before I formally propose the change. Test cases: Template:Rail-interchange/testcases#Paris (12 November 2022 - proposed).

    Syntax:

    | paris ={{rail icon|{{#switch:{{lc:{{{2}}}}}
      | m|metro = Paris Métro
      | r|rer = Réseau Express Régional
      | t|tram = Tramways in Île-de-France
      | i|transilien = Transilien
      | #default = Paris Other
      }}|{{#switch:{{lc:{{{2}}}}}
      | a = a
      | b|bus = b
      | c|cdgval = vc
      | g|gdslignes = g
      | mo|montmartre = m
      | n|noctilien = n
      | o|orlyval = vo
      | te|ter = t
      | #default = {{{3|}}}
      }}|size={{{size|}}}|alt={{{alt|}}}|link={{{link|}}}}}

Some of those icons may not conform to WP:ACCESSIBILITY requirements for MOS:CONTRAST. Bazza (talk) 10:08, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
Hmm, what icons do you think would need swapping out? Because my request was actually kind of behind the scenes technical thing. I hope you know what I mean. --Minoa (talk) 23:02, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
@Minoa, with apologies for not replying sooner. I think I do know what you mean. If you are not proposing any editing of the icons, but just the way they are invoked, then my comment above does not apply to your specific request.
Some icons, nonetheless, may need examining for contrast (as do many others in the catalogue) to ensure that any informative text in them has sufficient contrast against the background. For example, Paris Métro Line 18 fails at [1] and [2]; using darker (black) text would give a better conformance. If other information, such as image alt text, is always provided alongside that icon to show what it represents (line 18), then this is not such a problem. Bazza (talk) 10:27, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
I have checked to ensure that all the icons have alt text. They are checked in the test cases page. Also asking @Mackensen for thoughts on the backstage changes. --Minoa (talk) 11:00, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
The backend looks fine to me; good use of {{rail icon}}. As far as contrast goes, our hands are somewhat tied by what the transport operators have done. Mackensen (talk) 12:09, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
@Mackensen Up to a point. There's no obligation to have an exact copy at 18px of a symbol normally displayed on a real station platform, for example. The accessibility contrast requirements differ across various text sizes, and a simple change from, for example, white text to black when resizing should not be an obstacle. I'm not suggesting any need to immediately change things, but the more people bear this in mind when editing or creating new icons, the better. Regards, Bazza (talk) 12:37, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
I think that's a broader discussion worth having, though not in the scope of this request. To the extent that icons are purely decorative, with alternative text provided, and services described in prose, it may not be a significant issue. If a low-contrast icon is the sole source of information, that's a problem. Mackensen (talk) 12:53, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

Minor fix: {{{size|}}} should be {{{size|16}}}. The same applies to Athens. Sorry for the inconvenience. --Minoa (talk) 13:06, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for your help over the last month, although Athens should have been {{{size|24x16}}} because of the OSE and Tram icons that I did not realise until now. Sadly I have been very clumsy today, probably due to the lack of sleep. Lousy doomscrolling. --Minoa (talk) 15:54, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
This change appears to be the reason for a number of issues showing on Category:Templates with missing files and CAT:MISSFILE KylieTastic (talk) 17:29, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
I fixed the issue via the Transilien module. --Minoa (talk) 18:01, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

    This change appears to have broken {{RER C}}. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:34, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

Fixed; is passing a full wikilink to |link= even a valid use case? Mackensen (talk) 02:34, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
I do not think so. Anyway, thanks for the help again, although please change {{{size|16}}} to {{{size|24x16}}} in Athens due to the rectangular logos that I clumsily overlooked. Best, --Minoa (talk) 12:19, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

@Mehediabedin Thanks. Your requirement seems to consider the Dhaka Metro as part of the Bangladesh national rail system. Is this what you want? Other city metros either have their own entry or are a sub-division of their country's. For example, {{Rail-interchange|paris|metro...}} is used for all Paris metro services. Following that example, you may wish to change your requirment from {{Rail-interchange|bangladesh|... to {{Rail-interchange|dhaka|... I will wait for a reply before implementing your request.
