Remove link from image, for accessibility
editprotected As per WP:ALT, for use by visually impaired readers the image in this template should either have alt text, or it should not link to another resource. Since the image is purely decorative, it's better if the image does not link to another resource (see WP:ALT #When to specify). To do this, please add "|link=" (with no argument) to the image syntax. I did this in the sandbox and checked it with the testcases. You can check the sandbox diff. Thanks. Eubulides (talk) 09:20, 9 July 2009 (UTC)
- It's my understanding that linking to image description pages is our standard means of attributing images to their contributors, as is required by many copyleft licenses including our own GFDL and cc-by-sa. That being the case, removing such links seems likely to introduce copyright violations. I'm unsure of how best to resolve these apparently conflicting needs; has this been discussed in a more general forum, previously? – Luna Santin (talk) 21:53, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Further discussion on the abovementioned threads shows that "|link=
" is fine for public-domain images, and that "|alt=Alt text
" is required by WP:ALT for images that have links. Since some portals use public-domain images and others do not, we can give callers of this template the option by supporting "|alt=" and "|link=" so that callers can use the best approach for their particular portal. I have implemented this with this change to the sandbox, have tested it with the testcases, and suggest installing it. Eubulides (talk) 20:20, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

- Further testing found some problems with the approach mentioned in my previous comment, and I developed a better patch, which uses a public-domain image by default, so that it does not require a link. Any further comments? Eubulides (talk) 09:16, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

- When that patch was made, the icon it used (File:Portal icon.svg) was public domain. Unfortunately, it's no longer public-domain. To fix this problem, I generated a new puzzle icon File:Portal-puzzle.svg from scratch, which is public domain; also, this new icon is tuned for the aspect ratio used in this template, so it's a tad better in that respect. The patch does allow case-by-case basis unlinking: that's what the
|alt=
and|link=
parameters are for (these are documented). Any icon that has alt text is linked by default; if an icon doesn't have alt text it is violating the WP:ACCESSIBILITY guidelines and it needs to be fixed anyway. Please install the revised patch, which uses this new icon and addresses the concerns raised in the previous comment. Without the patch, all icons generated by this template have accessibility problems; that's not good. Eubulides (talk) 18:02, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

- File:Portal-puzzle.svg is not public domain. As you yourself state it is a derivative work of File:Portal icon.svg / File:Portal.svg . Problem is that File:Portal.svg uses the GFDL license (and some other similar licenses), so your image should also have such a license. Thus your image may not be released as public domain. And your image fails to attribute commons:User:Pepetps who made File:Portal.svg.
- --David Göthberg (talk) 00:08, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- I did not state that File:Portal-puzzle.svg is a derivative work, and it is not a derivative work in the sense of copyright law. One cannot use copyright law to prevent anyone else from making a blue puzzle piece with a keyhole. Please follow up this discussion at commons:File talk:Portal-puzzle.svg. Eubulides (talk) 00:49, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- You even use the same shading, so it is very much a derivative work. The least you must do is to attribute the person who created that design. Anything else is rude. You removed attribution and the copyright-problem-tag I put on that image. Since you are the uploader of that image you should not remove that tag, but instead wait for the admins at Commons to investigate and decide what should be done with the image. We already know you couldn't care less about copyright and attribution. And now you have also shown that you couldn't care less about procedures and rules here at Wikipedia and Commons.

Accessibility update
editprotected
No further comment, so please install the revised patch mentioned above, which addresses the concerns raised. I just now ran into the problem when reviewing a Featured Article candidate that uses Music
; without the patch, this use of the template fails FA criterion 3 due to improper accessibility for the visually impaired. Eubulides (talk) 21:26, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
- Comment: I'm happy to delink the default image (and well done for creating a new one!) but I still think linking should be turned on by default on others (but can be turned off case-by-case). I think that is the opposite to what you are suggesting. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:56, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- Defaulting to linking would hurt WP:ACCESSIBILITY for many, many articles, and would cause many featured articles to stop meeting FA requirements. I assume that the desire to link is due to licensing reasons? If so, that can be addressed in a different way: by putting the URL for that link into a place where it will not cause a screen reader to output unnecessary verbiage to visually impaired readers. I came up with a new sandbox patch to do that, and documented and tested the result; you can see it in action in Template:Portal/testcases. The basic idea is to add a new
|title=
parameter, which specifies the title text (this is visible to as a tooltip to graphical browsers, and is normally skipped by screen readers). If neither|link=
, nor|alt=
, nor|title=
is specified, we're assumed to be in backward compatibility mode, and the licensing URL is put into the title text. If one of these new parameters is specified, the user is assumed to have done the right thing, licensing-wise, and the parameters are obeyed. This should address the previously-mentioned concerns about licensing, because it follows the licensing requirements for all the portals currently out there. I suggest installing this new sandbox patch. Eubulides (talk) 22:11, 6 November 2009 (UTC)- I came up with a simpler sandbox patch for the problem. This differs from the patch in my previous comment, in that the default title text doesn't depend on

- I'm not sure whether this satisfies the need to attribute images or not (I am no expert in this area). However the tooltip seems rather inadaquate. As a seeing editor, I quite often like to click icons to see them at full size. It is sometimes difficult to make out what the icon is showing, and a clickable link is the easiest way to satisfy curiosity. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:45, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
- It clearly satisfies the attribution requirement. As for clicking on icons, that issue is not new. For example, with the default skin the puzzle-globe icon at the upper left of this very talk page is File:Wiki.png, but you can't easily find that out by clicking on it. Another example: the very commonly used "
commons
" template generates the box at right, and clicking on that image does not take you to the image page. This more-general topic has recently come up in Wikipedia talk:Alternative text for images #Delinking decorative images, and a solution proposed there (which would also handle the problem here) is to have a gadget that lets you look at the image and easily navigate to its file page. In the meantime, we shouldn't hurt the WP:ACCESSIBILITY of Portal merely because of this relatively-minor concern. Eubulides (talk) 23:59, 18 November 2009 (UTC)- After reading the thread you have linked, I am inclined to refuse this request as I realise just what an issue this is. It is highly awkward to navigate to the image description page and it seems you are saying we should hinder 99% of readers for the sake of 1% of them. As for "It clearly satisfies the attribution requirement", I'm afraid it is far from clear to me. However, as I was the one who reverted the first change I'll leave the decision for someone else to make. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:31, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- We need to make some change, because as things stand, portal does not satisfy the WP:ACCESSIBILITY aspects that any good article should follow (and which are required for featured articles). I've tried very hard to satisfy all objections to this change, and if it simply can't be met, and if portal simply cannot be modified to be accessible, then we'll have to start modifying articles to not use portal. If the current proposed change isn't right, can you suggest a better one, one that still satisfies accessibility requirements? Eubulides (talk) 17:55, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

- 1: The new image is a copyright infringement. See discussion further up this page.
- 2: The new code sets the default to not link when other images are fed. That means when other images are fed they will not get attribution since there will be no link, and it makes it hard to find out what the images' licenses are. Unless the users really understand the details and feed some extra parameters. Thus that too will cause lots of copyright problems.

Protected edit request suspended pending consensus. Skomorokh, barbarian 19:15, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- There are two claims here, one that File:Portal-puzzle.svg infringes copyright, the other that the proposed patch suppresses attribution when non-default images are used. Both claims are incorrect. However, as David Göthberg has filed two ANIs and a deletion-request over the image, it's better if we hold off installing the patch until those have been resolved. Eubulides (talk) 23:27, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- Eubulides: That is untrue. When an image is fed to your code, per default it causes this code:
<span title=""> </span>
- Which returns this:
- That image is not clickable. Thus it is very hard to find out who made it, and under what license it is published. And here's a link to that image, so I don't do a copyright infringement: File:Portal.svg
- Eubulides: If you want to unlink copyrighted images, then I suggest you bring that up with the Wikimedia foundation, and more specifically Mike Godwin, General Counsel and Legal Coordinator, so he can investigate it and then present it to the board so they can issue a new policy on image copyright handling in the Wikimedia projects. Instead of you demanding things on these talk pages. And I am not joking.
- --David Göthberg (talk) 01:14, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
- I did not say that the image was clickable. I said that the patch preserves attribution, and that claim is correct. Just mouse over the image, and you'll see the URL of its file page. That's not hard. The license does not require that the image must be clickable; all that's required is attribution, and putting the URL in the tooltip clearly satisfies this requirement. I'd rather not bother Godwin over this relatively minor and straightforward legal issue. Eubulides (talk) 01:55, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
- So you say that a user should figure out what that tooltip means, then switch to another browser tab, then manually type in that long URL to get to that image page? Most users I know would not manage that... Oh, and that user must have a browser that shows such tooltips.
- Our practice here at Wikipedia is to use links for attribution and to find the license. If you want to change that, then you should bring that up to central discussion. And since this involves a legal issue, then I say you need to go to the Wikimedia foundation with it.
- --David Göthberg (talk) 02:18, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not planning on doing anything along those lines unless the ANIs you filed expire without action, and your deletion-request is denied. You've made several incorrect claims about copyright law and about my actions and proposals, and it will take some time to resolve this. In the meantime there's no rush. Eubulides (talk) 07:56, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
I am not sure that removing portal form articles is not a good idea. I have always been wary of special links, including the sister-links. Rich Farmbrough, 15:44, 21 November 2009 (UTC).
- I agree that portals should not be removed from articles; I did not mean to suggest that. However, we must do something, as currently we have many high-quality articles (including featured articles) that violate Wikipedia:Accessibility guidelines because they use Portal and Portal violates the guidelines. If Portal cannot be changed, we could fix the problem some other way. For example, we could define a new template that generates accessible links to portals, and then gradually change articles to use that new template, retaining the existing behavior of Portal for backward-compatibility reasons. Obviously this would be more work, and it'd be better to change Portal if we can come to some consensus to do that. Eubulides (talk) 07:56, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Suggestion
Here is my suggestion for how we proceed:
- We use your new image as the default and we unlink it.
- We add support for delinking a public domain image, by passing a parameter.
- Other images are linked by default.
If this is satisfactory to all, then I will make the edit. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:09, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, thanks, that would be OK too. For WP:ACCESSIBILITY, editors also need to be able to specify the alt text for a linked image, so we need an
|alt=
parameter as well as a|link=
parameter. I have implemented and tested this suggestion (with a sandbox diff, documentation, and test cases). Eubulides (talk) 23:12, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Default image
I think that one of the biggest problems with this template is that there isn't a default image for each portal. So, I analyzed the database dump for usage of portal
and portalbox
, so that I could pick the most used image for each portal as the default (see the results). Based on those data, I created
that chooses the default image and implemented it into the sandbox version. What do you think? Svick (talk) 18:21, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
- Perhaps I'm not understanding your statement, but the puzzle piece image is the default for this template. Individual projects can specify a unique image if they want to, but if they don't, the puzzle piece should always be shown. I'm not sure what your proposed portal/images page would do. — Huntster (t @ c) 00:35, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
- Currently, if one portal wants to have the same image whenever this template is used, the image has to be specified on all pages where it is used (e.g. on every page, you have to use
Spaceflight
). But with my change, the image is specified once (in
), and you use justSpaceflight
and the image “RocketSunIcon.svg” shows on every page. Svick (talk) 00:47, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

- Aha, I see; I wasn't reading the subpage correctly. While this could obviously work, I'm not sure much demand is there, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to allow the function. Some additional comments from folks would be welcome. — Huntster (t @ c) 01:18, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
- An interesting idea, but isn't it easier to use separate templates (e.g. Film portal) for this? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:46, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
- I think there are three good reasons why using

is better:- If I want to link to Portal:Film what template should I use?
Film
,Film portal
,Film Portal
,Film Wikiportal
,Filmportal
or some other variant? Most of those templates don't exist, but there are templates with similar names. Even if all those templates used the same naming convention, there are still two choices –Something
that works all the time, but never has the appropriate image (unless directly specified) orSomething portal
, that works only for some portals, but has the appropriate image. I think that having one alternative that works all the time properly is better. - If I want to group portals using
portalbox
, there is no way to useFilm portal
, but changingportalbox
to use
is trivial. - Even when the
Something portal
template exists, people often don't use it:Africa portal
is used only on 6 pages, but more than 200 pages link to Portal:Africa without an image and another 200 pages specify their own image. (I counted bothportal
andportalbox
for the second and third number.)

Is there currently any way to produce a portal box without any icon? I ask because we intend to use it in this way from Template:WPBannerMeta shortly. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:56, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
- Not using this template without changes to it. The part that shows the image isn't inside any condition. Svick (talk) 21:10, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

parameter is better for two reasons:- Empty image currently doesn't work (the wikicode

can be seen where image should be normally placed, see the testcases), so this may actually fix some articles. - It's possible that images on Wikipedia won't be based around extensions in the future, so File:None may actually exist.
- Empty image currently doesn't work (the wikicode
- I implemented this in the sandbox. Svick (talk) 16:57, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
- Alternatively, we could add {{#ifexist:media:{image}|...? Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 19:14, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Remove FOSS logo
editprotected
Per this discussion, the logo used for the free software portal (currently File:Free Software Portal Logo.svg) is inappropriate as it is an original construction. This was removed from fossportal for the same reason. Until such point as an acceptable logo is agreed on, please remove the logo. Actually, is it possible to also suppress the logo where it is incorrectly manually specified in this case? Cheers. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 13:21, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
- Are you asking to change an image in ? I believe you can edit that one. As far as "incorrectly manually specified", do you mean in the case that it doesn't exist? I had proposed something in the thread above for that. Let me know if there is something else. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:30, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
- is cascade-protected, so no, I can't fix this myself. And I meant is it possible to override cases where that image is manually specified on the FOSS portal, because it's been agreed that this is inappropriate. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:34, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- I don't think overriding manual specification of that image is a good idea, instead bot should do it (there's about 2800 such articles according to my counting). Svick (talk) 11:19, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- I'd be happy for that solution as well. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 12:48, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, I removed the link to the image. Hopefully that's what you are looking for. I'm going to sort this massive switch statement. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:14, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- The switch was sorted by usage, so that it is executed faster for more used portals (see above). Svick (talk) 15:33, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, I will undo the sorting. By the way, there seems to be some case-variation duplicates and blank entries, which cause a broken image in the box. I am assuming the blank ones should be set to the default? Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:42, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, you can set the blank ones to default (University of the Arctic seems to be the only one remaining). Thanks for noticing that. As for the duplicates, they are there because switch is case sensitive and people sometimes use different capitalizations. Having the different variants of one portal in one place (like you did with FOSS) is a good idea. Svick (talk) 16:22, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, I went ahead and merged the obvious ones, but the ones where the cases produce different images will require making a decision as far as which image to use. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:26, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
Case duplicates
The following entries only differ in case, but have different icons?
| Anime and manga = Wikipe-tan face.png | Anime and Manga = Wikipe-tan without body.png | Molecular and Cellular Biology = Portal.svg | Molecular and cellular biology = TPI1 structure.png | Rock and Roll = Queens of the Stone Age Bologna 2005 small.jpg | Rock and roll = 'A' (PSF).png | Video games = Gamepad.svg | Video Games = Crystal Clear app package games.png
Should we merge these? Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:59, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think so. I went the other way and merged entries for the same portal with the same image (this doesn't have any visible effect, but makes managing the list little easier) in the sandbox, can you apply it to the template? (I also fixed image for Portal:Georgia in that edit.) Svick (talk) 18:16, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- Even better. I applied your change. I have dropped notices at the various WProjects to see if there is any preferences for the portal image in the case of the duplicates listed above. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 19:25, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- Your note at the MCB talk page stimulated a thread culminating in some new dog poo-inspired artwork. Just a heads-up per your request. Adrian J. Hunter(talk•contribs) 06:41, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
- Even better. I applied your change. I have dropped notices at the various WProjects to see if there is any preferences for the portal image in the case of the duplicates listed above. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 19:25, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- For the Anime-Manga Portal, I prefer the use of the Wikipe-tan face image over the alternate. It just looks better in my opinion. Fox816 (talk) 18:46, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
- I have posted Plastikspork's comment at WT:ANIME#Portal image. So far 3 votes for Wikipe-tan face.png and 3 votes for Wikipe-tan without body.png. G.A.Stalk 04:56, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
For the Video Games portal, I prefer Video games . My argument is that it is easier to immediately understand what the image depicts in #2 than in #1, since #2 is larger because the handles on both ends of #1 make the image smaller. Gary King (talk) 17:44, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
Why don't we make the parameter non case-specific? Converting everything to lowercase might be simplest. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:55, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
Another thing that may also need looking at are some items that are using the old default icon.
| Lancaster, Pennsylvania = Portal.svg | Oz = Portal.svg | Molecular and Cellular Biology = Portal.svg | Emo = Portal.svg
-- WOSlinker (talk) 10:54, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
Some could be set as follows:
| Computer security = Monitor padlock.svg | Journalism = Newspaper nicu buculei 01.svg | East Sussex = E_Sussex_arms.png | Northamptonshire = Northamptonshire Flag.PNG | Devon = Flag of Devon.svg | Strategy games = Chess.svg
-- WOSlinker (talk) 17:40, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
- Added those. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:15, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
- And the case-duplicates are now merged as well. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:34, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Why so many templates?
These syntax have the same result:

Geography
Geography portal
In Italian Wikipedia we use only 1 template to do this, and it works perfectly. I think is useless to have 3 types of template too have the same result, so I propose to:
- delete all template such as "Geography portal" (so all the Category:Wikipedia Portal navflags), substituting it with Template:Portal (I can do it in a very simple manner white a bot);
- copy the code of template:Portal box (that is more generic, cause it can contain 1-5 links) on template:Portal (making some little change to include the syntax of template:portal, too, so we can write "Geography" instead of "");
- delete "template:Portal box", substituting it with Template:Portal (I can do it in a very simple manner white a bot).
--Aushulz (talk) 16:24, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
- Nice ideas. I don't really see the point of deleting Geography portal and the likes. Some people might prefer to use them as a shortcut for the full syntax. However I think I support your idea of merging this template with portal box. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:49, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
- Category:Wikipedia Portal navflags can't be included on Template:Portal box, and they are difficult to manage with bot. If you prefer, we can leave them, substituting only where there are more than one, or deprecate their use. I think however there are no benefit to maintain them (Geography and Geography portal have the same length, so it isn't a "shortcut"). --Aushulz (talk) 16:57, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
- "Geography portal" is more natural to type. But no reason is shouldn't be a wrapper for . Also Portal should support multiple portals in one call - maybe it already does. Rich Farmbrough, 19:59, 2 May 2010 (UTC).
- OK it wa a wrapper but it used its own icon. Simplified massively - no doubt someone will be along to explain why I shouldn't have done that. Rich Farmbrough, 20:03, 2 May 2010 (UTC).
Portal box does this (see right) - I don't think Portal supports that - although it should. Rich Farmbrough, 20:06, 2 May 2010 (UTC).
There are 116 (well 115 now, I deleted one) cases of portal with no arguments. By fixing these up we can de-special case them ( Done), and simplify the template (on 2,500,000 pages). The breaking I would suggest can be forced for names over a certain length. There is sometimes need to override the icon used, but this really shows that it is a bad choice of icon. If we standardise the layout (height, border, icon location etc.) then stacked instances will look good (they often don't). Having done that we can make the multi-box use a much simpler syntax. I would like it to be Nudity
. This is simple for anyone to use. Maybe we should make the canonical name "Portals". Rich Farmbrough, 08:11, 3 May 2010 (UTC).
Oh and maybe we should error trap non-existent portals, by suppressing display and adding to a hidden cat. Rich Farmbrough, 08:19, 3 May 2010 (UTC).

- I changed the template to not use a switch, an alphabetical list of the portals supported is at Template:Portal/Images. Adding support for an additional portal is simply a question of adding a new sub-page of the form Template:Portal/Images/My portal name (note capitalisation). We can cascade protect the image names if we wish, or not, or only for the widespread portals. There is little point however, unless the corresponding images are also protected. Note that casing is no longer an issue for the image part, (provided the correct page name is set up)
My PoRtAl nAmE
will still find the right image. Rich Farmbrough, 07:58, 3 May 2010 (UTC).

- Oh I missed that competely. It wasn't really discussed properly though. What were the benefits of this? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 06:55, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
- It was never really discussed, but I agree that it's better. The switch statement just doesn't scale well as more and more portals are added. The switch is traversed until the first match is found, which can be quite long if the portal is either not on the list, or, near the end. The other additional benefit is that a bad edit on a single icon page will only impact one portal, rather than all of them. However, the downside is that some needs to watch these pages for vandalism. I already reverted one and wouldn't have found it if it weren't the example used in the documentation. I don't know a good way to watch them all for vandalism other than creating a page with all of them listed and looking for "related changes". I started one here, but it will be continuously out of date as new images are added. These pages are being actively edited, with edits being reverted, if you check the related changes on that page. Image syntax
Just wondering if it would be better to include the full
rather than just image.png
on all those subpages as then other options such as borders for flags, link and alt could then be specified for each individual image. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:11, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

by itself wouldn't work, because we need to set the image size (maybe something like
would work). But you can specify border already, see theTest
on the right. It uses Template:Portal/Images/Test that containsBlank.svg|border
. Svick (talk) 20:55, 13 May 2010 (UTC)- Link works as well. -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:06, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- Specifiying the size can be occasionally useful, for example with the Battleships portal where the image is a bit wider than most: -- WOSlinker (talk) 06:13, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- Perhaps the solution to this would be specifying the height of the image, which is the approach as we have recently taken with WPBM. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:59, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- Fixing the height of all images seems sound. Assuming images are a good thing, then it does not seem to onerous to ask that they conform to some dimension limits. Rich Farmbrough, 09:23, 22 May 2010 (UTC).
- There is some code for this in the /sandbox. If the size parameter is not specified then the height will be set at 28px. Could someone else have a look at this and let me know if it looks okay? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:17, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Protection
Portal images and names protected at Template:Portal/Image lockboxs. I was hoping we could cascade semi the less frequently used one, but that's not an option. Rich Farmbrough, 15:47, 22 May 2010 (UTC).
- I don't think we should be automatically protecting every image. Have you built that page by considering the number of transclusions in some way? And Rich, thanks for your work here but would you please start discussing things before doing? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 06:27, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- I have removed the protection for now. I would support selective protection of highly used portals, but this blanket protection is extreme, not warranted in most cases, and not in line with the protection policy. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:01, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
No problem, if Svick's figures can be used to select only the top 10 or 50 or whatever number of images/names that would be good. The point is the structure is there, albeit static rather than dynamic. Rich Farmbrough, 07:14, 24 May 2010 (UTC).

Template:Porta and Template:Portb
I have just discovered the templates Porta
and Portb
. They seem to be a work of User:Buaidh and the difference between them and this template seems to be that “it creates linkboxes of uniform height, with the link text centered”. As I think our goal here is to make all the portal templates simpler and less confusing, creating new templates that largely copy existing ones doesn't seem like a good idea. What do you think? Svick (talk) 19:40, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- I have sympathy for both ideas, but if it is right we should do it here. Rich Farmbrough, 09:19, 22 May 2010 (UTC).

Template:Port
As I stated at Template:Port&oldid=363649697:
This linkbox template creates a floating box linking to a Wikipedia portal. This template is functionally identical to Template:Portal, with the following exceptions:
- This template can float the linkbox to either the right or left.
- This template can add a border around the image and adjust the image size accordingly.
- This template can adjust the maximum image height. The default is 24 pixels or 22 pixels with a border.
- This template has a default maximum image width of 60 pixels or 58 pixels with a border.
- This template can align the link text to the left, center, or right.
- This template can display substitute link text.
- This template can break the link text in any way desired (see Examples below.)
This functionality can either be integrated into Template:Portal or Template:Port can be left as a separate template. Yours aye, Buaidh (talk) 18:51, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- I think it might be best if we discuss each of those issues separately. I will start with the first one below. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:01, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
Floating right or left
There is a {left} parameter on this template. Does |left=yes
achieve the functionality you are looking for? If not, can you describe the differences. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:01, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- Aye. I merely used float=left because I think it is a bit more intuitive. I included point No. 1 merely to point out the difference in syntax. Buaidh (talk) 19:04, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, maybe. But it is probably not worth changing it at this stage? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:05, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- Not if we merge Template:Port into Template:Portal. The real problem comes when we get to the image size defaults. Buaidh (talk) 19:08, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, maybe. But it is probably not worth changing it at this stage? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:05, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
The thing is the float left is only used on a very few non-encylopedia pages. To have the functionality transcluded on 2.5 million pages for that wafer thin benefit is ... something we do a lot ... but a bad idea. Rich Farmbrough, 20:09, 23 May 2010 (UTC).
- You can always include an unlisted parameter for such infrequent uses. Perhaps we should delete references to float=left from the documentation. --Buaidh (talk) 22:42, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- Good point, however the code is still transcluded whether the parameter is set or not. Rich Farmbrough, 07:25, 24 May 2010 (UTC).
From User talk:Buaidh
Sorry I didn't get back to you about the questions you raised on my talk page some weeks back. Basically the goals you mention are being achieved through the main template. Rich Farmbrough, 19:36, 23 May 2010 (UTC).
- What about the issue of image borders and the automated resizing of images to accommodate those borders? If I wish to generate a portal linkbox to Portal:England with an image border and a uniform image height of 24 pixels, I can invoke:

- or I can invoke:

- The former requires either (1) an expicit invocation of the image file (bypassing the Template:Portal/Images files) with a border suffix, or (2) a permanent alteration of the Template:Portal/Images file which makes it impossible to remove the border for other users. The former also requires an explicit resizing of the resultant image size. --Buaidh (talk) 22:15, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- Or you can specify it at Template:Portal/Images/England, like it currently is. Svick (talk) 22:26, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- OK. Same question, using Template:Portal/Images/Colorado. My point is that you can append a |border to any Template:Portal/Images file, but then you are stuck with the border forever and the apparent image size increases by two pixels in each direction.
- Lets move this back to Template talk:Portal#Portals. --Buaidh (talk) 22:33, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- My suggestion is instead of just having the image name, it would be better to have the full image syntax as then the sizes could be individually specified for each image and also any other things such as alt tags. e.g instead of
Flag of England.svg|border
, could have
-- WOSlinker (talk) 07:07, 24 May 2010 (UTC)- I think I disagree because then we would not be able to code the size centrally, and I think we should be looking to standardise the size across these templates. - Should portal boxes have borders? If yes, put them in the code, if no, leave them out. The page Budiah made that indexes the US state portals and projects is a thing of beauty, and one way it achieves this is to format the portal boxes identically to the project boxes. However, to me the question is should they look the same? Personally I prefer the slightly larger tags (I am also not opposed to
- ), but if the consensus is that they should be the same and small, so be it, or the same and larger, or different. Rich Farmbrough, 07:21, 24 May 2010 (UTC).

- The border can be turned on or off. (United States usually does not need a border, but may.)
- The image height and width can be adjusted for the extra two pixels required for the border, as in Template:Port&oldid=363649697.

- At smaller image sizes, the stripes appear to alternate, while at larger sizes it becomes obvious that the white stripes do not terminate. I can certainly see two pixels with my unaided sexagenarian eyeballs. Allow me to illustrate my point.

- Abbreviations will become more important when we create portals like Portal:United States Virgin Islands. Yours aye, Buaidh (talk) 14:55, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
- If we need 2 more pixels for the icons, then we should take 2 more pixels for all of them. (I am not even wholly sold on the idea of icons.) Abbreviations are not a good idea, in my opinion, unless they are things like NATO, known almost exclusively by the abbreviation. One of the joys of Wikipedia is exploring areas you are unfamiliar with, and even commonplace abbreviations in the US or UK might present a barrier to a fourteen year old student from a non-English speaking country. Rich Farmbrough, 17:45, 24 May 2010 (UTC).
- If abbreviations are desired, you can use redirects:
NSW
already works, because Portal:NSW redirects to Portal:New South Wales (it doesn't have NSW's flag as icon this way, but that can be sloved by redirecting Template:Portal/Images/Nsw to Template:Portal/Images/New south wales). Svick (talk) 19:14, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
- If abbreviations are desired, you can use redirects:
- Redirects can be avoided with a label= parameter, but the real value is flexibility with line breaks as shown above with Portal:Commonwealth realms.
- The issue with borders is not boxsize, but effective image height for Template:Port and horizontal alignment for Template:Portalbox.
- I also think the align=center feature is useful for horizontal alignment of the link label. Yours aye, Buaidh (talk) 22:06, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
A suggestion
One logical solution to this whole problem is to have three templates which perform somewhat differently. Template:Portal and Template:Portalbox use a default image size of 32x28 pixels. Template:Port creates linkboxes with a uniform effective image height of 24 pixels. Vive la différence! --Buaidh (talk) 22:44, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- In one of the threads above, one of the things we were trying to achieve was to merge
portal
andportal box
. We don't want to confuse editors with many different templates that do almost the same thing. If there was a template that would be used in rare circumstances, I guess that would be fine, but that's not the case here. Svick (talk) 11:48, 24 May 2010 (UTC) - (edit conflict) No, the logical solution would be to decide here which image size looks best and then to implement that. This keeps code centralised, the portal boxes consistent and ensures that related discussion happens in one place where everyone can participate. Vive le standardisation. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:55, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
- We can make Template:Portal a Swiss Army knife of templates, but at what cost? Sometimes it is far simpler to divide up functionality into separate routines. I've been writing code professionally for 39 years. I would love to see the functionality of Template:Portalbox and Template:Port merged into Template:Portal, but the complexity may be prohibitive. Yours aye, Buaidh (talk) 13:06, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
- The question is rather if we really need the ability to use different functions. I can see no point why some of these images should suddenly have a different image size on a per-article base. --The Evil IP address (talk) 17:53, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
- My current view is that one additional template might be useful. That would be Portal frameless. It would be used when a portal tag was wanted inside another box (see Template:Infobox GB station for an example), and would be otherwise identical to Portal. The syntax for both would be {Portal|<portal name 1>|<portal name 2>....}. We use only free images, no link and no alt (per accessibility and licensing requirements). All the overrides for various other features and parameters I believe are unused or virtually unused (I am checking on portal box now)see Template talk:Portal box, and can be dispensed with. Rich Farmbrough, 17:57, 24 May 2010 (UTC).
- Continuing the audit Template:WPBannerMeta/taskforce uses height=15 and margin=0. Rich Farmbrough, 00:00, 26 May 2010 (UTC).
- That would need Portal taskforce. Virtually no other beneficial use of the parameters is made anywhere as far as I can see. Most of the links to the Indiana portal, for example used left=no which does nothing, and those to the Professional wrestling portal used "break=yes" which is not needed ,as with maxsize the text breaks there anyway. Math rating uses break for invocations that use a small version of the template, but there are none. Rich Farmbrough, 11:58, 11 June 2010 (UTC).
- There are several disadvantages to splitting this template and having to maintain separate versions of it, and I see no advantages. I support the idea of improving consistency. If this desire to remove all optional parameters is to prevent inappropriate usage of them in articles, then you could mention in the documentation that a particular parameter should not be used in articles, or even not mention it at all. I remain opposed to having separate portal templates. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:03, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Code error
As Template:Portal is currently written, the default size of 32 pixels is never invoked. If both size and parameter 3 are missing, the size defaults to a height of 28 pixels. If this is the intent, the 32 pixels should be removed from both the code and the documentation. If this is not the intent, the code should be fixed. I would like to modify Template:WPbox and Template:Lbox to conform to the same dimensions as Template:Portal, but this error confounds me. --Buaidh (talk) 20:32, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Category:Templates with transitional syntax
Is the use of Category:Templates with transitional syntax intended as preparation for eliminating the named parameters, eliminating the positional parameters, or merely an act of terrorism? Yours aye, Buaidh (talk) 20:42, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
- I am concerned about this mass-"cleanup" and removal of parameters and see little discussion on this page to support these changes. - Is there a consensus that the named parameters should be eliminated? Named parameters are generally considered more flexible than positional parameters. Sorry I misunderstood your use of the word "positional. Let me explain more fully.
The named parameters are flexible, and yes they are better than positional parameters for doing anything complex. But the thrust here is simplicity:
- Very widely used template (nearly 3 million pages, well over 3 million uses I would estimate), therefore it should be simply implemented (despite a very old injunction by then tech. god Brion Vibber not to worry about performance).
- This is use on the article ages, therefore it should follow a consistent look and feel.
- The template should be trivial to use.
So that's all very well, what are the confounding factors? Here are the ones I have found.
- Multiple portals - currently supported by Portal box - ideally they should be merged but to do that we need to get rid of the existing unlabelled (positional) parameters apart from {}.
- Unusual but reasonable - in terms of layout - uses of presentation parameters
- Not uniform with other "flag" templates such as WikiProject boxes, noticeboard boxes etc.
And here's what I propose to overcome those factors
- Remove all the old unlabelled (positional) parameters apart from {} - this turned out to be much harder than expected
- Create and use two specific templates, one for task-forces in WikiProject banners, one for embedding in navboxen and infoboxen.
- Portal frameless created and implemented
- Portal taskforce created and implemented and de-implemented in case someone objects
- Create two new templates 9and more if needed)
- Project (displacing the existing Project to Project header ) and
- Notice board
These should have the same basic layout as portal, and will use the same images, but can have any fancy parameters required, since they will not be used on articles.
Hoped for result:
- Articles (and talk page banners) are all consistent with one another.
- Portal becomes trivial to use, less of a resource hog, and easier to maintain.
- Creating a new set of navflags for each new portal/project/interest group becomes unnecessary.
(Even given that the above was all resolved there are still questions, some very basic, that this exercise has raised. For example I discovered that Portal:Lost had been deleted (the actual portal not a template) after a discussion, and the page redirected to the appropriate WikiProject. All well and good, but articles were now linking to WikiProjects which is a WP:Selfref we are not supposed to do.)
This is a fairly straightforward process that should have taken a couple of days, instead I have spent the best part of a month on it, and I know a number of other people have been working on it too. Oh well, I hope it will be worth it. Rich Farmbrough, 13:52, 11 June 2010 (UTC).
- Are there any objections to Rich's grand plan? While this plan has its virtues, it seems to me like a significant case of megalomania. Yours aye, Buaidh (talk) 14:42, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- Well it's great to at last have some kind of proposal brought for consideration!! (And thanks to Buaidh for moving it to the proper place.) For the main I support the thrust for simplicity and consistency but have concerns about the way this is being achieved. I can support the move away from unnamed parameters except for {}. However I do not see the need for any additional templates and would prefer to see this template handle all cases. The issue of performance should not be a concern because most articles do not show more than a handful of portals. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:58, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- I'm confused (as usual.) If Rich proposes removing all the positional parameters except parameter 1, why has Rich marked and removed the named parameters from invocations of Template:Portal? Are there any parameters other than parameter 1 that you wish to keep? --Buaidh (talk) 17:40, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- That's right, the only uses as far as I can tell are the taskforce mini-flags. Rich Farmbrough, 00:07, 21 June 2010 (UTC).
- Comment Removing all named parameters will be good, so that it's real simple to use it and it's consistent all over the place. The second unnumbered parameter seems to be away already, so I'd say it's good time starting to remove the named ones. --The Evil IP address (talk) 16:43, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Portal
editprotected I'd like to request a couple of simple changes just for one of the portal image subpages:
- Template:Portal/Images/Hong kong be renamed to Template:Portal/Images/Hong Kong with the uppercase K. I initially could not find this because I was typing in the uppercase K in the URL of my browser.
- Template:Portal/Images/Hong kong be changed to use File:Hong Kong SAR Regional Emblem.svg instead of File:Flag of Hong Kong.svg. The portal template for Hong Kong had initially used the emblem as an image instead of the flag.

Fix Template:Portal for parameter boxsize
Template:Portal
The parameter "boxsize" as used in any is being used with mismatched braces, ending with only 2 braces "}}" rather than 3 "}}}" as if invoking Template:boxsize. Fix the 11th line to add another closing "}":
- OLD:
|width:{px;
- NEW:
|width:{}px;
- OLD:
Once corrected, the box shown here, during edit preview, will no longer list redlink "Template:Boxsize" in the list of templates used (at the end of an edit-preview page).
The problem only occurred when passing parameter "{Portal...|boxsize=nn}" and, hence, most portal links did not list redlink "Template:Boxsize" during article edits. -Wikid77 (talk) 11:28, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- Done. Now fixed. -- WOSlinker (talk) 13:20, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Projects that do not use a See also section
The WP:MEDMOS deprecates See also sections, so another place option is necessary for portal links in general, including this format. There is a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Medicine-related articles where we are trying to come to a consensus. Peter (Southwood) (talk): 08:14, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
