Division?

I see the attribute Division but I do not see where it is being used in the actual template.--NMajdantalk 13:23, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

All fixed. I must have accidentally removed it when tweaking things. Thanks for pointing it out. --MECUtalk 16:16, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Optional ImageSize Added

I have added the optional field of ImageSize. It will default to 150px if not specified. If you do specify, just put the number of px without px, ie "100" and not "100 px". --MECUtalk 16:24, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Change?

Everything is in 2 columns now... can we change it back?CJC47 04:26, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Yes. This at least fixed the orange/green colors that suddenly occurred with no change to the template (eg, they changed something behind the scenes with the wiki software that caused it). I'm trying to figure it out. --MECUtalk 13:16, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
Everythings fixed. They did change something because they had to fix the NFL Player infobox template too. But, it doesn't matter now, all fixed. --MECUtalk 13:39, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

BCS?

Can you add a heading for BCS ranking? I guess it should go above the Coach's and AP polls. z4ns4tsu\talk 17:17, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

I didn't add BCS since it doesn't come out with a "final" poll: one that is after the bowl games and therefore doesn't represent the complete season. Therefore, it should/would only be used during the season. Further, the coding required to add a third option would be three times as complex as the current coding. Not that it's not impossible, but for such a limited use I didn't think it was worth my effort. If there is enough people who think differently that I, that the BCS should be used during the season, than I shall, but I can't promise to even start working on it for a few weeks. But it would then be useful for all future seasons. Anyone else is welcome to do it if they want to. --MECUtalk 23:48, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
That makes sense. I havn't messed with the parser functions they use here, so I did not know how difficult it would be to implement. z4ns4tsu\talk 11:41, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

"no image" bug?

If you use this template but do not specify an image, "[[Image:|150px]]" appears at the top of the box displayed in the article. Was this intentional, or is this a bug that has not yet been addressed? (See my user page for a visual example) - Godfoster 11:59, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Fixed. Not sure how that happened, it certainly wasn't planned. Thanks for bringing it up. Though I think it should always use an image. --MECUtalk 14:53, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Previous/Next season?

What is everyone's opinion on adding a 'Previous/Next season' section to the bottom of the template? We have a couple options as far as implementing it. If its a required field, then the previous year or next year would be a red link if the article is not created. Or if its not a required field, then the next season indicator would exist only if the article exists. I'm thinking something like this at the bottom of the template:

Previous season Next season
2005 2007

What do you think?--NMajdantalk 16:36, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm fine with red links. I don't think it even needs to be a field, and it could just be calculated from the current year that is a required field, so it would always be there and be automatic. --MECUtalk 16:48, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea to me. z4ns4tsu\talk 17:04, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Done. --MECUtalk 17:44, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
Only two problems I noticed after loading the 2006 Oklahoma Sooners football team page: 1) it isn't centered and 2) the text is too big. I'd change it myself, but I don't want to break the template. z4ns4tsu\talk 18:14, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
That should be better. I don't like how they're seperated a little but I can't think to make it better for now. This will do until I get smarter on how to handle it. --MECUtalk 20:49, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Template cleanup

I think I finally got it. I cleaned up the code in the template by removing all the HTML table tags (<td><tr><th>) and replacing them with wiki markup. Took a lot more work than expected. Also, I vertically aligned some of the elements.--NMajdantalk 17:52, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Template problem

Along the right-hand side of the box created by the template, there is a gap in the outline of the box next to the Previous Season/Next Season portion of the template. Given the warning at the top of the page, I am not about to try to fix the template. Could someone please take a look at it?--Tlmclain | Talk 21:36, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm, well I didn't see any issues upon first look but I thought I'd take a look at the template in IE and sure enough, I see it. I'll see if I can fix it. Thanks for letting me know.--NMajdantalk 21:55, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
I think I got it. Can you tell me if it looks fixed to you?--NMajdantalk 22:05, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
Perfect! Thanks--Tlmclain | Talk 22:45, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Font size

I reduced the font size for the template down to 90%. I think it looks better, but if others don't, the change can be reverted. I felt the template was almost too much of a focus and I, personally, like infoboxes to have smaller font size.--NMajdantalk 18:08, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Basketball

Perhaps a major contributor to this template would be willing to create a basketball equivalent? {{NCAATeamBasketballSeason}}, perhaps? I'd suggest making a generic sports season template, but sports are very specific in awards, scores, and end-of-season games that separate templates sound like a better idea. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 03:41, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

I'll work on one today if nobody has started yet. I'll keep you up to date on my progress.↔NMajdantalkEditorReview 13:55, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
1st draft up at User:Nmajdan/Test. Also, I might be able to work this template to have both football and basketball. We'll see.↔NMajdantalkEditorReview 14:16, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Basketball bug

On the previous season/next season bit at the bottom for basketball, it should reflect the naming convention to list the year range. Example: on 2006-07 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets men's basketball team, it should have the previous season link to 2005-06 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets men's basketball team and the next season link to 2007-08 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets men's basketball team. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 17:01, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Yep, it should. I think I got this fixed. If anybody ever creates a women's page, the template will need to be modified again. Let me know if it is fixed.↔NMajdantalk 17:22, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
My main beef was the year issue. Instead of 2007 it's 2006-07 and instead of 2008 it's 2007-08, etc. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 04:24, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
Ahhhhh...... I thought you were referring to the addition of "men's" which was still needed but I understand now. I'll see what I can do.↔NMajdantalk 12:48, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, I got it fixed but its not automatic like football is. I had to add separate variables. I tried not to but the functions I would need to make it automatic (m:StringFunctions and m:VariablesExtension) are apparently not apart of WikiMedia's software. So, until those are added, they will be manual. If there are ever added, I will go back and rework the template.↔NMajdantalk 13:53, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
I'm sure you did the best you could :) —Disavian (talk/contribs) 13:59, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Ranking

As I was making 2005 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team, I noticed that {{CFB Schedule Start}} links to that year's rankings page; for example, the 2005 team is linked to 2005 NCAA Division I-A football rankings. I think it'd be a good feature if it could also be linked in the yearly infobox where it says "Rank." I don't know of any yearly rankings pages for other sports, but if they exist, I suppose they should be linked too. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 19:26, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Baseball?

Hey, I was wondering if anyone has or could quickly make a baseball template, like the normal fb/bb ones but with pitching coach and batting coach instead of Off/Def coordinators(mastrchf91) 03:42, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

I'll work on it.↔NMajdantalk 12:55, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Done.↔NMajdantalk 19:21, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Image

Ed strikes again. I reverted his change because I feel the image in the article meets the non-free image use criteria.↔NMajdantalk 19:04, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

"Ed strikes again" - there's no need to take that tone; be civil. The logos are not being used for critical commentary and they are not year-specific so they are not of unique significance to the article. Use of a logo outside it's main article is generally unnecessary (unless it is being discussed). ed g2stalk 20:37, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
My interpretation of WP:LOGO#Guidelines permits the usage of a team's logo if the team is being discussed, which in this case it is. If the image has sufficient rationale, then it should be allowed on a page where the team that sports that logo is receiving critical commentary. This is the first I've ever heard of "year specificity" in relation to non-free images or logos.↔NMajdantalk 20:42, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
That has never been the case. Logos are routinely removed from any article where they don't have a specific rationale (i.e. all but the main article). There may be a need to have the logo somewhere on Wikipedia - but I have seen no justifications for use simply because a team is mentioned. ed g2stalk 20:56, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
The articles this template is attached to don't just "mention" a team, they attempt to encompass all parts of what went into that team's performance for a specific season. They are as much about the team as the main article is. If this is as routine as you say, can you provide links to recent diffs? z4ns4tsu\talk 21:01, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
I'll agree with you on the issue that there is no justification when a team is just mentioned. But this is more than a mention. This is an entire article on that specific team. I don't see how this is different then on the main sports article. I do not see how this violates any rule regarding non-free images or logos.↔NMajdantalk 21:01, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
In addition, I believe you are once again acting unilaterally on an issue that has not received community consensus but are basing your actions on your own preconceived notion of how Wikipedia should be which clashes with others' views. I have seen no discussion on logos on year specific articles. There are many articles where this is used in both college athletics as well as professional. Again, reading the guidelines on the WP:LOGO page, I see no issues with having the logos on these pages. Until you can point me toward a discussion where the community agreed on this course-of-action, I am again going to revert your change. If you feel this needs to be discussed, please bring it up on one of the broader discussion pages such as at WP:LOGO or WP:NONFREE. Please do not reapply your change until it has been discussed by a larger audience.↔NMajdantalk 20:52, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
  • Comment: I support User:NMajdan's actions. The team in question is unlikely to take punitive action against the use of its logo in our educational forum, so there isn't anything to worry about. The use of the logo in the context described above is well thought out. Badagnani 21:14, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
I'm glad you agree. But you agree for the wrong reason. Its not about whether or not the owner of the logo will pursue punitive action, its whether or not the usage violates guidelines and policies of Wikipedia, which I believe it does not.↔NMajdantalk 21:32, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
  • I support the use of the logo. Just because our coverage has expanded to multiple pages does not mean that only one such page should be selected to display the logo. If a sports program has multiple teams that use one logo, then the logo makes sense on the pages of each team. For instance, the Nebraska logos belongs on Nebraska Cornhuskers football as well as on Nebraska Cornhuskers. Johntex\talk 23:15, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
I'm so concerned about that as I am about the "Team X in YYYY" articles, which is what this template is for. ed g2stalk 13:57, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Discussion now also taking place at Wikipedia_talk:Non-free_content#Logos.↔NMajdantalk 23:19, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Football previous/next year

Could someone change the template to allow me to pick the previous and next seasons instead of figuring them out for me? That's fine as a default mode, but it would be nice to be able to override that behavior, especially when dealing with a teams first ever season (I'd like to be able to tell it that there are no previous seasons) or when a season or two went by without the team playing at all. Gopherguy 02:36, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Historic conference names

I just discovered another thing I'd like to see in the template. I believe it should be a lot easier to implement than my proposal on differing nicknames.

I believe that the conference names displayed in the team templates should be historically correct for that year. I'll provide some examples:

In a nutshell:

  • I propose adding a separate field that can be titled "HistConfererence" or something similar.
  • If "HistConference" is blank, the regular conference name will be wikilinked as is.
  • If "HistConference" is filled in, it should be piped to the contents of "Conference". In other words, using the USF examples, "California Basketball Association" will be displayed, but will be linked to "West Coast Conference".
Reasonable? — Dale Arnett (talk) 00:10, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Never mind. Easier way: Just fill in "Conference" with the historic name. Should be a redirect to the current name, if it isn't already. — Dale Arnett (talk) 00:17, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Reply: I liked what you were thinking Dale Arnett. I had the same thought awhile back when I was first starting to create all of the William & Mary Tribe football seasons. I didn't read your comment until just today, but it seems like we were on the same wavelength. W&M used to be the "Orange and White" for a period, followed by "Indians" and now are presently "Tribe". If you check out William & Mary Tribe football, 1893–1899, William & Mary Tribe football, 1910–1919 (etc.), you'll see that not only did I use the historically correct name for W&M, but I also used the historically correct names for all of the football stadiums (both for W&M and opponents). One trend I've noticed is that people who create historical football season results are too lazy to actually research what stadiums / stadium names were used for those teams. It honestly doesn't even take as long as people think, and it makes the pages so much more accurate and better. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that some of us are trying to make college football seasons the right way. Jrcla2 (talk) 19:00, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

TSN Ranking?

The documentation for the template specifies a TSNRank parameter to include rankings from The Sports Network's Poll. This parameter, however, is not included in the template itself. It would be useful to include this option, particularly for FCS football where TSN and the Coaches poll represent the two major rankings. Given the number of options in the template for displaying poll rankings due to the possible permutations, adding the TSN poll into the mix will require a bit of work. I could try to tackle it myself, but I thought I'd offer it up for discussion and see if someone with more experience with intricate template editing wouldn't mind doing it if it looks to be a desirable addition, lest I break anything. Thanks! WildCowboy (talk) 21:52, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

I have created an updated template that adds a separate rankings section for FCS schools using TSNRank and FCSCoachRank as parameters. It's my first time editing an intricate template such as this, so I'd appreciate it if any interested parties could take a look at what I've done and test it out on a few pages to make sure I'm not going to break anything if I make the proposed changes. It seems to work fine so far, although the documentation for football mode will need to be updated to make clear to editors that BCSRank, APRank, and CoachRank are to be used for FBS schools, while TSNRank and FCSCoachRank are for FCS schools. Thanks! WildCowboy (talk) 18:17, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
After waiting a week for comments and doing some more testing to ensure that nothing will break, I have implemented the proposed change. Some FCS schools that used the FBS parameters will need to be updated, and I'll try to tackle those over the next day or so. WildCowboy (talk) 18:22, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Agreed

I completely agree with WildCowboy in that there needs to be a clear, discernible difference in BCS and FCS rankings when it comes to college football season infoboxes. Like him, I am not someone who knows how to tweak with infobox templates, but I would really like to see someone who knows how add the TSNRank and FCSCoachRank parameters. As it stands now, there needs to be manually noted differentiation in rankings for FCS schools' infoboxes (see 2009 William & Mary Tribe football team to see what I'm talking about). That's a huge pain and unreliable as far as having people actually make the necessary notations goes. Will someone please fix this? I'm not just speaking for myself when I say we'd appreciate it. New fields

Is it possible to add fields for team captains and team MVPs.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 01:52, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Comment: I think a team captain field may be useful, but realistically a "team MVP" field is superfluous and subjective to that team's opinion on the most valuable player. Infoboxes (in general) are getting increasingly long anyway, and adding an MVP field wouldn't actually help contribute to the team's season in any way. A team captain(s) might though. Jrcla2 (talk) 21:51, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
Isn't MVP the more meaningful field. Captain is who you voted as someone who should be respected as a leader in advance based on reputation. MVP is who you voted as someone who actually has performed as the team leader.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 22:29, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
I'm not really supportive of either option, to be frank. I was only saying that if one of those should even be considered at all it was the captain field. College football captains are typically assigned by coaches, not voted upon by teammates (as it is in high school most of the time). Regardless, I think that neither field should be included; they're both really tangential at best to helping the reader understand the season. Jrcla2 (talk) 22:35, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
I do Michigan Wolverines football and basketball articles. I know the football team votes for captains. I am not sure how MVP is selected. However, given all the post season accoladed coming in for Brandon Graham (American football), it would be indicative of something to the reader to see his name at the top of 2009 Michigan Wolverines football team as team MVP.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 22:45, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
—I stand corrected about captains being selected by their teammates; it was my understanding that the coaches did it. I support all of the reasons and suggestions by WildCowboy below. The captains and MVPs could be demarcated in that season's roster box or mentioned in the text portion of the article. They should not need to be included in an overview. Jrcla2 (talk) 01:32, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
Comment: I too have concerns about "infobox bloat" making it more difficult to find truly relevant "at-a-glance" information on a team's season. College captains are typically chosen by their teammates, and I believe that in many cases MVPs are as well. But at its most basic level, I don't feel that either category is important enough for inclusion in the infobox. Captains can and should certainly be noted on a team's roster if it is included on the team season page. Otherwise, a subsection in the body of the article could suffice, and the same is true for the team MVP in my opinion. WildCowboy (talk) 23:37, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
I mocked up a version of the template with added fields for captains and team MVP here: User:Jweiss11/Template:NCAATeamSeason. See an example in use here: User:Jweiss11/2003 Michigan Wolverines football team. Jweiss11 (talk) 05:31, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
I like the way it looks. I think the fields are good optional fields that can be ignored if considered to be bloat, but which seem as relevant to me as defensive coordiinators.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 07:19, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Logo and image

Can the template be augmented to allow for both a team picture and a logo. I have 2008–09 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team at WP:FAC and also am working on 2009–10 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team. Since most other teams in the conferences have their logos at the top, I think Michigan should have a way to put its logo at the top while keeping the team photos.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 18:32, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Support for Conference Finish String

Can we support an optional "ConferenceFinish" field for strings ala 1st, 2nd, 3rd, t4th, etc reflecting the team's final placement in the regular season conference standings? Right now I have:

{{NCAATeamFootballSeason
|Year=1974
|Conference=Pacific-8
|ShortConference=Pac-8
|Record=5-6-0
|ConfRecord=3-4-0, t5th in

Where I am piggybacking ', t5th in ' (reflecting a tie for 5th place) in 'ConfRecord' to produce:

Conference Pacific-8
1974 record 5-6-0 (3-4-0, t5th in Pac-8)

So the proposal is by providing this:

|ConferenceFinish = t5th

The display would be updated, such as splitting 'ConfRecord' and 'ShortConference' with ', ConferenceFinish in ', like:

Conference Pacific-8
1974 record 5-6-0 (3-4-0, t5th in Pac-8)

Having an explicit field for this data would avoid my kluge. I don't see any inherent trouble or conflicts with conference Division results data (such as SEC East vs West in CFB), conference championship game outcomes, or CBK post-season conference tournament results.Pasadena91 (talk) 17:33, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Pasadena91, that would be a nice addition. To match the conventions in Template:CFB Yearly Record Entry, the formatting should be as follows: |ConferenceFinish = T–5th. See Bo Schembechler#Head coaching record for an example in use. Jweiss11 (talk) 18:34, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

What about different nicknames or school names?

There's one small thing that bugs me about this template. Is there any way it could handle differences in nicknames or school names? For example:

Different nicknames for men's and women's teams

Many schools historically had different nicknames for men's and women's teams, and some still do:

  • Several schools append "Lady" to the standard nickname—e.g. Tennessee (Lady) Volunteers, LSU (Lady) Tigers, et al.
  • AFAIK, all the D-! schools that have "Cowboys" as a nickname call their women's teams "Cowgirls". I know that's the case for Oklahoma State and Wyoming, and I believe it's the case for McNeese State as well.
  • UMass (as in the main Amherst campus) uses "Minutemen" for men's teams and "Minutewomen" for women's teams.
  • Some schools have radically different forms for men's and women's nicknames. For example:
    • Lousiana Tech: Bulldogs (men) and Lady Techsters (women)
    • Centenary: Gentlemen and Ladies
    • Western Illinois: Fighting Leathernecks (men) and Westerwinds (women)
    • Hawaiʻi: To be discussed in a later section.
This still needs to be fixed. If the sport field can be changed so that something like "mbasketball" and "wbasketball" produces the title "men's basketball" and "women's basketball" respectively, and "basketball" would simply produce "basketball," this would fix this entire issue for all three types of nicknames. NThomas (talk) 06:00, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Different nicknames in different sports

A few schools have different nicknames in different sports. Examples:

  • UNLV: "Rebels" for most men's sports, "Lady Rebels" for all women's sports, "Runnin' Rebels" for men's basketball.
  • Hawaiʻi: Men's teams are known as "Rainbow Warriors", "Rainbows", or "Warriors", depending on the sport. All women's teams are "Rainbow Wahine".

Historic nicknames and school names

Many schools have changed nicknames over time, some have changed school names, and a few have changed both. Examples:

  • Before 1957, there was no such team as the "Oklahoma State Cowboys"—it was the Oklahoma A&M Aggies.
  • The school now known as Memphis was originally West Tennessee Normal and later Memphis State before adopting its current name in 1994.
  • Syracuse called its men's teams "Orangemen" and women's teams "Orangewomen" before adopting the "Orange" nickname for both sexes in the 2004–05 school year.
  • Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana-Monroe were respectively Southwestern Louisiana and Northeast Louisiana before adopting their current names in 1999. Also, NLU/ULM was known as the "Indians" before changing to "Warhawks" in 2006.

It might be too much to do... but could someone look into whether the template can be improved to allow for these anomalies? — Dale Arnett (talk) 09:29, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Edit request from NThomas, 3 August 2011

Years ago, specialized position coaches and coordinator titles didn't exist and often teams only had a "head coach" and an "assistant coach." By adding an "assistant coach" field to the football mode, this template will be able to add assistants who may not otherwise be able to be added.

The following code would need to be added:

{{#if:{{{AsstCoach1|}}}| ! Assistant coach {{!}} style="vertical-align: middle" {{!}} {{{AsstCoach1}}} {{#if:{{{AST1Year|}}}|({{{AST1Year}}} year)}} {{!}}- }} {{#if:{{{AsstCoach2|}}}| ! Assistant coach {{!}} style="vertical-align: middle" {{!}} {{{AsstCoach2}}} {{#if:{{{AST2Year|}}}|({{{AST2Year}}} year)}} {{!}}- }} {{#if:{{{AsstCoach3|}}}| ! Assistant coach {{!}} style="vertical-align: middle" {{!}} {{{AsstCoach3}}} {{#if:{{{AST3Year|}}}|({{{AST3Year}}} year)}} {{!}}- }} }}

after this part of code in the "football" section's:

{{#if:{{{DScheme|}}}| ! Base defense {{!}} style="vertical-align: middle" {{!}} {{{DScheme}}} {{!}}- }}

NThomas (talk) 06:55, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

The way the template works, if you set the mode to basketball, baseball, ice hockey or tennis, you can only input the three assistant coaches in addition to the head coach. For baseball, you can also add hitting and pitching coaches in addition to the three assistant coaches. For football or the default mode, you cannot put in any assistant coaches, but you have access to offensive and defensive coordinators and schemes. Since all the parameters use different names (and I assume no one will try and put a pitching coach into an ice hockey template), I removed the mode switch in the sandbox so all modes can input all the parameters, since it's simpler and doesn't duplicate so much of the template code. The template still defaults to football for other uses, such as the article link at the top of the template. As long as no one has filled out the parameters for a different mode than the one they're using, the sandbox version shouldn't break anything currently on articles. Examples are in the testcases page. — Bility (talk) 18:51, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
I like this idea a lot better. The simpler the better. I looked over the template in the sandbox and it looks great! I've been working on a documention page for this template and if this is implemented, this would be much more user friendly. NThomas (talk) 23:36, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

{{edit protected}} There's been a trend for decades to have multiple coordinators (Co-Offensive Coordinators and Co-Defensive Coordinators) and the way the template is constructed now, it's impossible to utilize the "OCYear" and "DCYear" parameters. It renders as if both coaches have had the position for the same amount of time, and does not make note if the two people filled the position separately, or shared the responsibility. Adding the parameters of "CoOffCoach1" and "CoOffCoach2" and "CoDefCoach1" and "CoDefCoach2" as a substitute for "OffCoach" and "DefCoach" when a team has Co-Offensive Coordinators or Co-Defensive Coordinators, and not just one person in the role.

Add field for baseball polls

Could someone add a field for the Baseball America poll for college baseball articles? Thanks ~ Richmond96 tc 03:10, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

I'd like to echo this request. For college baseball, there are four major polls - Coaches, Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, and NCBWA. The first three are the most commonly cited in media reports. If the poll fields in the baseball mode could be those first three instead of the current Coaches and AP (which does not exist for baseball), we'd appreciate it very much. Please update the template to use the version in the sandbox, this is a refactoring of the template to use {{infobox}}, and expands the template to allow it to function for more sports (see above). it also adds a parameter for associated head coaches (see above). the new template uses two subtemplates, {{infobox NCAA team season/link}} and {{infobox NCAA team season/succession}}, so those should probably be at least semiprotected once this is implemented. examples can be seen in the testcases, which I will expand momentarily. Fix for "Big East Conference" display

Since the original Big East has split into two conferences, it's now time for an additional parameter in the table.

Currently, the "Conference" field is supposed to include the full name of the conference. However, it now breaks down for the Big East:

IMHO, there now needs to be a new field to allow a full but non-dabbed conference name to be displayed. Call it "ConferenceDisplay", or something similar Or different, for that matter. (Note that the existing "ShortConference" field is intended only to display an abbreviated conference name for display of season records.) Here's the way I see it, using a team that is a member of both versions of the Big East:

Confereence = Big East Conference (1979–2013)
ConferenceDisplay = Big East Conference
ShortConference = Big East
Confereence = Big East Conference (2013–present)
ConferenceDisplay = Big East Conference
ShortConference = Big East

I'm not good enough with template syntax to even think of making such a change. Anyone else think it's a good idea? — Dale Arnett (talk) 01:49, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

if you just pipe the value to |conference= it should work fine, as far as I can tell. Do you have an example article? Frietjes (talk) 20:15, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
Yes. See 2013–14 Butler Bulldogs men's basketball team for an example. When displayed, the "Conference" field shows "Big East Conference (2013)" (which was the title of the article on the current Big East before the article was moved to its current location). IMHO, the "Conference" listing should display only "Big East Conference". — Dale Arnett (talk) 05:09, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
Further update on comment: I never even heard of the "para" template until you mentioned it. I don't know how to use that template to make it work right—i.e., pass "Big East Conference (2013–present)" and make it display "Big East Conference". — Dale Arnett (talk) 05:13, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
the para was just a shortcut for typing | conference =. my suggestion was to do this, but I am wondering if it wouldn't be easier to just use the value passed to ShortConference for the display name. we would need a check of the transclusions before rolling this out, but if so, we could just use the article name for the Conference and the display text would come from ShortConference. Frietjes (talk) 15:20, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

In creating Draft:1905–06 University of Virginia men's basketball team, I noticed that the previous and next links are tied to the team name, so that if you try to pipe the team name as discussed in the Big East fix, the links don't render properly. I've already submitted a request for a redirect, but it seems like something that would come up relatively frequently with older seasons, conference affiliations, pages which cover a whole decade, etc. Would it be possible/useful to add a |prevlink=, |nextlink=, and |teamlink= to override the automatic link creation? 70.208.131.198 (talk) 16:57, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

which articles do you expect to be linked by the previous and next links? Frietjes (talk) 19:00, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
One example could be in seasons when a team changes its name (i.e., the next link for the last season with a certain name, and the previous link for the first season with a new name). For a page which covers a decade, you could have (for example): |next=1900–01 |nextlink=Podunk Patriots men's basketball, 1900–1910#1900–01. 70.208.131.198 (talk) 19:47, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
Other articles I've seen have this problem include teams where they have different names for men's and women's teams; for example, Tennesee Volunteers and Lady Volunteers. On those pages, you have to create a redirect for the team page and each previous and next link (for example, see the infobox at 2013–14 Tennessee Volunteers basketball team). It would seem to be easier and quicker to be able to have the direct link in the infobox. 70.208.131.198 (talk) 19:53, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
when I asked, "which articles do you expect to be linked by the previous and next links?", I meant in Draft:1905–06 University of Virginia men's basketball team. Frietjes (talk) 20:22, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
Oh, I understand. In that article, I wouldn't use the previous/next links themselves. I could use a team link override on that page, so I wouldn't need a redirect. I included the previous and next in my request because they seem to be logical extensions (and I would think they'd be more useful in the long run). Certainly, my requests aren't pressing needs (like bug fixes), but they seem like they would allow for increased flexibility. 70.208.131.198 (talk) 23:34, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
For most cases, what you describe goes against the spirit of WP:NOPIPE; a redirect should be created, which is not as convenient for IP editors (who lack the privileges of registered users). A better scenario, though probably rare, would be 2011 North Dakota Fighting Sioux football team. While functional, it needlessly redirects from 2012 North Dakota Fighting Sioux football team to 2012 University of North Dakota football team.—Bagumba (talk) 00:14, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Parameters to consider given football until the 1950s or so

Though I can use the assistant coach parameters, given the use of qualifiers such as offensive coordinator or a pitching coach in baseball, parameters for line coaches and backfield coaches at least should be considered. If one wants an exhaustive treatment, there are also things such as freshmen coaches or end coaches to consider. Cake (talk) 02:50, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

  • Cake, listing more than two or three assistants in the infobox may be overkill in most instances. Consider a separate section for a coaches list -- this is what most of the current CFB team season articles do. And we should probably do the same thing for team captains when there is more than one or two of them; some modern teams now have 5, 6 or more team captains. Including all of them, and all of the 6 to 10 assistants can overwhelm the core data of the box. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 03:20, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
Sure can, which is why I stated it as a conditional on giving an exhaustive treatment. However, if O coordinators and D coordinators and just a generic "assistant" is there, then line and backfield really should be. You've been made aware before how in the one-platoon days that was the relevant distinction. Say, the 1927 Vanderbilt staff, is typical. I seem to recall pages with those 5 or 6 captains of the modern day which had a kind of hide/show function like a navbox might, which was useful were I to update pages with captains. Changing TSN poll to STATS poll on FCS football template

Request to make a change to the football FCS template. The request is to change the TSN poll to the STATS poll. The Sports Network was acquired by STATS LLC in February and has ceased to exist. Reactivating this request, as it still needs to be addressed. Both The Sports Network and STATS LLC articles reference the acquisition, and the poll is clearly labeled as the "STATS FCS Poll" now.
The label change for the infobox is straightforward, but a parameter change from TSNRank to STATSRank would need to be done in such a way as to not break articles that currently use TSNRank or else use a bot to convert things over. All 2015 season articles should be updated to use the STATS name, but perhaps older seasons can be left as TSN. In that case, perhaps it's easiest to just add a new label/data set between 9 and 10 in the template:
| label10 = STATS
| data10 = {{#if:{{{STATSRank|}}}|#{{{STATSRank}}}}}
Unfortunately, then all label/data sets below that need to be renumbered.
We'd also need a change to header5:
| header5 = {{#if:{{{BCSRank|}}}{{{CoachRank|}}}{{{APRank|}}}{{{TSNRank|}}}{{{STATSRank|}}}{{{FCSCoachRank|}}}{{{CFPRank|}}}{{{AFCARank|}}}{{{D3FootballRank|}}}|Ranking}}
Then 2015 season articles could be manually updated to use switch from TSNRank to STATSRank. I volunteer to help with that once the template updates are in place. WildCowboy (talk) 16:04, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

division string automatically on new line

Right now we're prepending a "<br>" tag to the division string to place that text on a new line, below the conference name. See 2016 USC Trojans football team and markup, 2016 Penn State Nittany Lions football team or markup, like:

  |conference = Pac-12 Conference
  |division = <br /> South Division

Embedding formating within the data is bad practice, so we should consider conditionally automating the new line behavior.

The related Template:Infobox NCAA football school automatically puts the division name below the conference name (no "<br>" tag is required). See USC Trojans football and markup, or Penn State Nittany Lions football and markup.

| ConferenceDisplay= Pac-12
| ConfDivision = South

Note, this template does not currently prepend the "Division" label, whereas the latter template does, like:

Template:Infobox NCAA team season output: Template:Infobox NCAA football school output:
Conference Pac-12 Conference
South Division
Conference
Division
Pac-12
South

1) Can we update this template to automatically place the division string below the conference string? (no "<br>" tag required)

2) My preference is to continue to omit the "Division" label as unnecessary and redundant to the data (ala "Division: South Division").

Cheers, UW Dawgs (talk) 17:50, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

UW Dawgs, no objections, so changed. Frietjes (talk) 15:24, 16 September 2016 (UTC)
and created, Category:Pages using infobox NCAA team season with spurious br tag in division to find/fix all of them. Frietjes (talk) 15:32, 16 September 2016 (UTC)
@Frietjes: - Thank you, again. After some work via WP:AWB with a Category filter, all ~800 of the current instances are now resolved with the break tag removed. Defer entirely to you on keeping/removing the new supporting logic at some point, such as if cleaner for you to maintain. Loosely related, AWB also flipped a bunch of legacy Template:NCAATeamSeason instances to Template:Infobox NCAA team season (such as [1]). UW Dawgs (talk) 05:38, 17 September 2016 (UTC)
UW Dawgs, thank you for cleaning up the category. just in case there is any lag with the server caching, I would recommend keeping the tracking category (and extra string processing) in there for another week. thank you again. Frietjes (talk) 13:40, 17 September 2016 (UTC)

Line coach, backfield coach, end coach parameters

Would be useful for history's sake, just as offensive and defensive coordinator are useful today. Cake (talk) 12:27, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

Whenever women's teams are edited now and previewed, the warning "Page using Template:Infobox NCAA team season with unknown parameter "Sex" (this message is shown only in preview)" papers. Are we no longer distinguishing between genders? — Wyliepedia 14:54, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

@CAWylie: It looks like that parameter has since been deprecated. Instead, on women's basketball pages for example, the "sport" parameter should be set to "women's basketball" --Zachlp (talk) 20:36, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
Cool, good to know. (Edit: Yes, the page in question had both mode and sex parameters offsetting the other.) Thanks, Zachlp! — Wyliepedia 23:59, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

Request addition/change to baseball

I see that the baseball infobox has an AP Poll category. This is useless since the AP does not rank baseball teams. A better alternative would be the Collegiate Baseball Poll (CB Poll), which has been ranking teams since 1959. Thanks.--Porsche997SBS (talk) 07:59, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

Image size default

The default image size is 180px, which seems a bit smallish (if it's not a logo - logos should use the logo field, not the image field). If we change the template to use Module:InfoboxImage, then it would use the standardized coding, which defaults it to 220px, but is customizable on user preferences. I think this is the way to go to bring this template into conformance. --B (talk) 13:54, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

An infobox for an individual NCAA wrestling season.

I was interested in creating an individual NCAA wrestling season article. What are my best options? Thank you TheSteve2424 (talk) 05:49, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 20 March 2019

Change CBRank to D1BaseballRank. The Collegiate Baseball poll is outdated and ranks 30 teams instead of 25, making a less clean template. The D1Baseball rankings do not fluctuate so drastically after losses as the CB Ranking does. Also, the D1Baseball poll is now promoted by NCAA Baseball on Twitter while the CB Poll is not referenced. The D1Baseball poll was recently agreed upon to be used on the SEC baseball standings template, so it would look much cleaner for these team pages to include their D1Baseball ranking instead of their CB ranking. Men's teams without the gender in the title

@Frietjes and Zachlp: Would it make sense to change mode=basketball to not include the "men's" gender in the previous/next year links? Schools that don't require the gender in the name because they don't have a women's team or the women's team uses a different mascot (such as Old Dominion) require redirects to make the previous/next year links work. Or are the redirects the preferred solution? I realize these teams are in the minority, and it would require a massive change from mode=basketball to mode=men's basketball for pages that are correctly using this default behavior. But I assume a bot could handle the change fairly easily? Hoof Hearted (talk) 13:42, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

Alternately, we could allow a sex=none setting? Hoof Hearted (talk) 14:09, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

We should have a setting that removes "men's" where it is not needed. Jweiss11 (talk) 01:58, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

Hoof Hearted (talk) 15:18, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

@Jweiss11 and Hoof Hearted: probably fixed here. although, it would be great to replace all the |mode=men's basketball with |sex=men|mode=basketball. but, given the number of transclusions, it will require some careful thought to have the template do the correct thing when |sex= is omitted. Frietjes (talk) 15:32, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
@Jweiss11, Hoof Hearted, and Frietjes: Just some doing some brainstorming, maybe we could add a special 'none' case to the 'sex' parameter so that the men's/women's string would be omitted in the links? I played around with it a bit and this the the cleanest solution I've come up with so far. However, there are some cases where you would want to completely customize the next year's link, for example if the team name changes from one year to the next. In that case, maybe a new 'next_link' parameter that overrides the next year's link would be a better option. Open to ideas and criticism. --Zachlp (talk) 15:44, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
Zachlp, you can use |sex=none right now, but you should check the results to make sure nothing horrible happens. Frietjes (talk) 15:46, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks Frietjes. I think I understand what that sub-template is doing, and it appears to have fixed Old Dominion. But I'm unclear if it will handle all of the special cases such as List of college sports teams in the United States with different nicknames for men's and women's teams. Zachlp brings up a good point too about teams that changed mascots (such as Austin Peay in 2017). Whatever you think is easiest, I just wanted to bring up an issue I ran across. Hoof Hearted (talk) 16:02, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
@Frietjes: using |sex=none seems to work perfectly! (I looked in the template source for that, not sure how I missed it...). It doesn't take care of name changes from one year to another, but there are far less cases where that happens. For those, I can't think of any possible resolutions other than a new |next_link= parameter. --Zachlp (talk) 16:10, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
I swore I tried that and it didn't work. Yes, that should satisfy nearly every problem case. Hoof Hearted (talk) 16:54, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

Next season/year

I noticed the next season/year link is rendered differently across different sports if the next article doesn't exist. Is there interest in making them consistent?

I kind of prefer the latter, but understand that might be harder in this template with so many variables. Any thoughts? Hoof Hearted (talk) 14:02, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

NSCAA poll title change

Is there a way we change the parameter and name for the NSCAA poll to USC poll? A couple years ago the National Soccer Coaches Association of America rebranded as United Soccer Coaches. Quidster4040 (talk) 01:52, 27 August 2019 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 1 October 2019

Label 17 should be changed from National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)) to United Soccer Coaches Association. The organization re-branded in 2017, per source 2 on the page United Soccer Coaches. Swimmer33 (talk) 18:13, 1 October 2019 (UTC)

link changed. Frietjes (talk) 18:26, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm not sure if an abbreviation would be better or not. I haven't really seen it abbreviated USC but the link ends up long and goes to a new line. See example here: 2019 Virginia Cavaliers men's soccer team. @Quidster4040: also asked for this edit in August, so maybe they have some input. Swimmer33 (talk) 13:41, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
Swimmer33 I boldly abbreviated it, but we can also nowrap it, but that would then cause the content in the next column to wrap more. we could also just remove the "poll" since that could be seen as redundant (e.g., like the line directly below). Frietjes (talk) 13:51, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks! I think that will work for now. Swimmer33 (talk) 13:54, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

Cleaning up field names

This template is supporting two sets of field naming schemes, an old set with camel case (e.g. HeadCoach) and newer set without (e.g. head_coach). Seems that it got halted in a transition between the two schemes. Additionally, there are a few fields that are still using camel case in all instances, e.g. "BCSRank", which ought to be converted to "BCS_rank". It would be great to clean everything up and convert all transclusions to the newer field names without camel case. I've engaged User:Primefac to run a bot to take care of this cleanup. Does any have issue or suggestions here? Jweiss11 (talk) 14:16, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

@Frietjes: do you foresee any issues with this cleanup? Jweiss11 (talk) 18:15, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

should be fine so long as the actual conversion doesn't mangle anything. Frietjes (talk) 13:33, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
@Primefac: does this give you what you need to make the bot run? Also, would it be possible to clean up the spacing and ordering of fields within the transfusions of this template and to remove more ancillary fields that are un-populated? Past bot runs on Template:Infobox college coach seem to have accomplished that and it was very helpful. Jweiss11 (talk) 16:40, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
Just to double-check, are the "duplicate" params listed above to only use the first one listed? Primefac (talk) 21:05, 5 October 2019 (UTC)
Primefac, yes, where paired, the first parameter listed is the good one. Jweiss11 (talk) 16:45, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
Cool... I'll remove the deprecated ones... soon? Primefac (talk) 23:20, 6 October 2019 (UTC)
Bot run is pretty much complete - I didn't notice that it only loaded up 25k pages and there are about 26k pages that transclude the page. Rather than re-run everything I'd say just remove the "old" params from the param check and I can run the bot on the category once it's populated. I changed a few of the values above (a couple duplicates not listed and some out-of-order), just check this diff for what I tweaked. Primefac (talk) 02:12, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
Primefac, thanks. I just removed the deprecated parameters from the check. Jweiss11 (talk) 16:23, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
The category is starting to populate with articles that the bot run missed. Seems it skipped ones that are calling Template:NCAATeamFootballSeason, an old name for this template that now redirects here. Jweiss11 (talk) 16:29, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
There's also Template:NCAATeamSeason and Template:NCAA team season. Jweiss11 (talk) 16:33, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
It shouldn't have skipped the redirects... definitely odd that it's up to over 3k in the tracking category though. I'll double-check the settings next time I run it. Primefac (talk) 18:37, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

@Primefac: Looks the we've got about 4,000 articles using a redirect to the template. Can we bot clean that up and bypass the redirects? Also, what about cleaning up spacing and ordering of fields? Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 01:22, 10 October 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, with so many transclusions I wanted to give the cat a few days to populate. I'll try to get the bot up again either Thu or Fri.
With regard to the latter requests, I've never sorted out anything other than 1a, b, c, and 2d of this proposed infobox logic, and to be honest (at least for this run) I don't really feel like hashing out the code to deal with the rest. That's not to say it's not possible, but it would be rather large undertaking and would delay finishing this run by a good while. Primefac (talk) 01:31, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
Primefac, looks like you re-ran the bot. Thanks. Seems to have still missed a few, e.g. 1909 Oregon Agricultural Aggies football team (Captain), 1922 Chico State Wildcats football team (Division), 1954 New Mexico Lobos football team (Conference). Jweiss11 (talk) 23:15, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
Also missed 2003 Miami RedHawks football team because the template was sitting inside
. Jweiss11 (talk) 23:19, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
With the exception of that last one, they all ran without me changing any of the settings, so if I had to guess they hadn't been in the category the last time I ran the bot. I'll run it again and see if any more pop. Primefac (talk) 00:57, 15 October 2019 (UTC)
more likely because of this edit. Frietjes (talk) 16:28, 18 October 2019 (UTC)
I fixed a bunch and created some subcategories with the only remaining unconverted parameters. I will use my purge script to fill these up shortly. Frietjes (talk) 18:20, 18 October 2019 (UTC)
Looks like |Image_size= is the culprit for a lot of these. I'll bang them out tomorrow with the bot. Thanks for doing all that cleanup. Primefac (talk) 18:52, 18 October 2019 (UTC)
Frietjes, did you fix the other 200 or so pages that were in the tracking category? If so, should we re-remove Captain etc from the acceptable list of params? Primefac (talk) 10:22, 19 October 2019 (UTC)
Primefac, not sure who fixed what, but I have now removed the extra tracking and the extra parameters. there may be some other minor cleanup (e.g., using bowl for basketball) but nothing that is impacting the outward appearance at the moment. thank you! Frietjes (talk) 14:37, 19 October 2019 (UTC)

Auto linking previous next seasons

I expanded the ability to auto generate links to the previous and next seasons, so now |prev_year= and |next_year= should only be needed when there is a gap or when there is no previous or next year. please let me know if there is a problem with this change. Frietjes (talk) 13:38, 26 October 2019 (UTC)

Wins vacated field not displaying

The "wins_vacated" field doesn't seem to be displaying. See 2013 Ole Miss Rebels football team and 2013 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team for examples. @Frietjes: can you take a look at this when you have chance? Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 01:24, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

removed the extra pipe so it should be working now. Frietjes (talk) 14:02, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
Excellent, thanks! Jweiss11 (talk) 20:53, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

Add ranking template for baseball

Can we add a ranking spot for |D1BaseballRank and show up as D1Baseball in the template? I'm not sure how but the D1Baseball poll has been decided as the poll used in all conference standings template, so we really need one to display on team pages. Thank you!
