Welcome!
Endowment figures
[edit]The values of the endowment on the NACUBO report are still as of June 30, 2013. Any revisions to the report are not changes in the valuation date. Bahooka (talk) 23:06, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
- It's actually through January, 2014. To quote the report, "This table was prepared in January 2014. Changes to endowment values reported after January may not be reflected in the full 2013 NCSE report." That said, with February being the most recent release of the report, this is the more accurate date to use in citation. MorrisS (talk) 23:13, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
- The way I read it, the report was prepared in January but the values are as of June 30: "Endowment market value data for Canadian institutions are expressed in U.S. dollars, based on the U.S./Canadian dollar conversion rates in effect on or around June 30, 2013 (for FY 2013) and June 30, 2012 (for FY 2012), as reported by the Bank of Canada Web site (http://www.bankofcanada.ca/en/rates/exchform.html). Data from Canadian institutions is NOT included in the full 2012 NCSE report. Data revisions received after January 2014. Revised data not reflected in the full 2013 NCSE final report."
- You may want to discuss at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities for verification. I reverted Stanford, but won't make any other changes until it is clarified. Thanks, Bahooka (talk) 23:22, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, I read that too - but figured it was referring only to the schools marked with a "#" such as University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, Mount Allison University, etc - seeings as all of these are in Canada. You're right though, more clarification is needed. MorrisS (talk) 23:26, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

The article Camp Kawanhee for Boys has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- No evidence of notability.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Replaceable fair use File:HSC Uniforms.png
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:HSC Uniforms.png. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 21:13, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

I believe you have incorrectly marked this upload as non-free, and I believe you may have done this with several of your uploads. You state that this drawing is your own work, and the associated metadata leads me to believe that this is likely the case. I believe that you likely intended to upload your work to Wikipedia with a free license or as public domain, but I cannot be sure that was your intent. Therefore, I'm suggesting to you that if this image was in fact drawn by you that in fact you are the copyright holder, and you may retag the image either as public domain or with a free license suitable for use on Wikipedia such as Cc-by-sa-3.0. If that's your intent with this image, please change the license as soon as possible, or your upload is likely to be deleted. Thanks! XeroxKleenex (talk) 07:44, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Words of encouragement
[edit]Hello. I see that you have been creating pages related to Hampden–Sydney College, and I thought I would congratulate and encourage you. I am fascinated by this school and would love to teach there at some point, so it is nice to see someone else is interested!Zigzig20s (talk) 21:19, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks! I'm an alumn of the College and would like there to be a greater presence of it on Wikipedia given its history. There's just so much information, it can be hard to go in one particular direction. Once I get through the Presidents I think I will try to add more info about the football team — a project that I started before the Presidents. That would be cool if you could teach there some day, I would love to move back to the area myself. MorrisS (talk) 21:25, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
- Just remember to add inlined references, preferably at the end of each sentence to avoid confusion! I am very interested in the Antebellum South--it would be interesting to know if there were plantations nearby or Confederate poets, etc. Also if there is a HS-Upperville connection? (That might run into original research though.) Make sure to take lots of pictures for Wikimedia Commons if you ever visit again (or if you are able to ask friends there to do so!). Also public art and Republicans who went to HS would be interesting to me--just topics I would spend time expanding. I don't know much about football--I must be too much of a nerd! Do keep me posted if you think I may be interested in some articles you're working on. All best!Zigzig20s (talk) 21:47, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
- I will certainly keep you posted. There are plenty of old plantations in the area. I will be going back to campus mid October and plan to take lots of pictures to add to the Commons and wiki pages that need them. I also plan on going to the Museum on campus to get pictures of the old presidents' portraits. ... I'm not sure about HS-Upperville, personally.MorrisS (talk) 22:17, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
- Sounds great! Do write on my talkpage if you want to get my attention. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 22:35, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
- Also, is there an article on the student newspaper? If it was started in the nineteenth century, it would definitely be notable. The trick would be to find the right sources for a "history section" for example. I have found this website, but it looks like it has not been updated since 2012? Strange. To Manner Born, To Manners Bred: A Hip-pocket Guide to Etiquette for the Hampden–Sydney Man might also be notable--not sure. I certainly would love to read it!Zigzig20s (talk) 23:09, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
- I will look into it when I am back on campus. I actually wanted to do something on the The Tiger but couldn't find enough digital sources, so I will have to contact the Publications Department at the school. To Manner Born, To Manners Bred is a fun read. I actually have a copy of it in my car as we speak. I'll ask Admissions if they have a digital copy that can be used for distribution. MorrisS (talk) 23:15, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
- That's very kind of you. Do keep me posted.Zigzig20s (talk) 23:35, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello. Thank you for adding those pictures to Slate Hill Plantation. I have removed the reqphoto tag, but do you know if there are any tobacco fields there? It would be great to add a picture of that, if that's still the case.Zigzig20s (talk) 03:24, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
- From what I remember, the fields are empty. I don't think any crops are being grown on them currently. I plan to go back again in a couple of weeks, so I will try to get more pictures of stuff that I didn't get a few weeks back. I agree though, the Slate Hill wiki page would be way better with pictures of the land rather than the Venable boys. MorrisS (talk) 03:31, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
- Sounds great. I would love to visit.Zigzig20s (talk) 03:53, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
- Quick additional note: would it be rude for you to take a few pictures inside the church? I don't know if there are statues or plaques; that could be interesting. But sometimes pastors don't like that--some believe it is rude or blasphemous! Also the museum would be great (I think that museum could have its own stand-alone page). Lecture halls, public art, etc. But you probably know better than I do, as you probably know the campus very well.Zigzig20s (talk) 08:28, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
- Absolutely, if the church is open when i'm back I'll get some pictures. I'll try to get more around campus too. I need to get there earlier in the day next time.MorrisS (talk) 13:25, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
- Btw, I could temporarily enable the "e-mail" option if you have documents about H-SC that you'd like to send me. Just let me know. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 05:10, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the support, I hope to get back to writing more on Wiki over the holidays once I'm freed up from my grad school obligations (I also want to scan in a copy of To Manner Born, To Manners Bred for you so that you can have a read... File permission problem with File:HSCfootball.tiff
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:HSCfootball.tiff. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mosmof (talk) 05:09, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
Jerod Cherry and page protection
[edit]Hello MorrisS, thank you for your recent edits to the Jerod Cherry article.[1] I understand that your edits were made in good faith, but please note that adding a {{pp-blp}} is merely decorative, and does nothing to actually protect the page. Should you wish to request a page be protected in the future, you may submit such requests at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection and an administrator will consider the request based on the information provided. If you have any concerns or questions you may contact me at any time. Regards, Yamaguchi先生 20:15, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the comment. I realized immediately after I made the {{pp-blp}} edit that it wouldn't actually do anything. I then figured out how to request real protection but saw that I was beat to the punch by you by about 5 minutes so I didn't do anything more. Thanks for the help though – truly appreciate it. MorrisS (talk) 20:30, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
Why did it say, "Lacy's third son"? Did you mean Moses's third son? That's how I interpreted it.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:02, 6 September 2015 (UTC)
- Good catch! Must've been a brain fart by me. On another note, I should have some time here soon to get back into editing and creating more H-SC related pages. Been extremely busy with grad school all year but I finally graduated and will have some free time for this hobby. MorrisS (talk) 19:28, 8 September 2015 (UTC)
- Great to hear. (What are you studying?) I came across Hoge as he conducted the wedding ceremony of Daniel Baker (Presbyterian minister). I don't think Baker graduated, although he may have received an Associate degree before moving on to Princeton. Apparently, the H-SC campus was in turmoil during the War of 1812...potentially something to research.Zigzig20s (talk) 20:20, 8 September 2015 (UTC)
- Btw, I think it would be very interesting to contextualise all those people with 1) their plantations 2) their investments in railroads 3) their investments in mines.Zigzig20s (talk) 09:30, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
{{{Special Note}}}
is not used in articles. It is called a template element, not an article element. Only used in templates. As you currently have it, it does absolutely nothing to the output of the article. The look does not change. The original edit summary said this was a Check Wiki error #34. This checks for template elements in articles. Stop with your threats and reverts. Bgwhite (talk) 07:20, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
- I see you are not done with the threats. Leaving a threat on my talk page wasn't a good idea. Bgwhite (talk) 07:26, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

Non-free image use
[edit]Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. We always appreciate when users upload new images. However, it appears that one or more of the images you have recently uploaded or added to a page, specifically Hampden–Sydney vs. Randolph–Macon rivalry, may fail our non-free image policy. Most often, this involves editors uploading or using a copyrighted image of a living person. For other possible reasons, please read up on our Non-free image criteria. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:27, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

License tagging for File:HSCfootball1894.png
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:HSCfootball1894.png. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click the "Edit" tab at the top of the page and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

Hampden–Sydney vs. Randolph–Macon rivalry
[edit]I updated the results table in Hampden–Sydney vs. Randolph–Macon rivalry to use the standard automatic table, and there is a mismatch in the series record. The media guide and article infobox support the 60–50–11, but the actual game results show a 58–51–11. this probably means (1) there is a game missing in the table, and (2) one of the wins for RMC should be a win for HS. do you know of any source for the results in this table? Frietjes (talk) 14:50, 2 May 2017 (UTC)
- Yes I have that info, I will look into it later tonight / tomorrow. I know that there is a discrepancy in the game results listed by the schools and what actually took place in real life. I emailed Hampden-Sydney's athletic department about it a few years back and they changed the number of times "The Game" had been played (1 less than what they had been saying) on new information they were publishing. Anyways, I forget the exact details off the top of my head. I'll look into it soon and get back to you about it.

The file File:Cushing Hall 1887.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
unused, low-res, no obvious use
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:01, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
