Quit adding fansites
[edit]Direct links to outside fansites are not appropriate for inclusion in this template. Please quit adding them. Internal links to articles about the fansites would be appropriate if the fansites are worthy of articles.207.69.137.29 23:29, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- How do you see them as inappropriate? If I'm not mistaken, the most basic concept of the idea behind Wikipedia is to provide as much information to the end user as possible. These simple links do just that. If Wikipedia does not have the information that the user is looking for, one of the other sites most likely will. Floppie 03:44, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- See particularly WP:NOT#Wikipedia is not a mirror or a repository of links, images, or media files and WP:NOT#Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. The templats such as this one are to guide users to content within Wikipedia.207.69.137.22 11:34, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- Looking at WP:Not#Wikipedia is not a mirror or a repository of links, images, or media files, I see There is nothing wrong with adding one or more useful content-relevant links to an article; however, excessive lists can dwarf articles and detract from the purpose of Wikipedia. - excessive lists. The list is hardly excessive; I can shorten the list if you want, but I hardly see how removing them entirely is appropriate. Floppie 15:23, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- Good idea. I'm glad we could come up with a compromise ;) I wouldn't've thought of that one. Floppie 03:52, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

It's exceedingly rare to have external links in a navigational template. I would say we would need an extraordinary reason to maintain them here. Worse, the first of the two links goes to a page that does not exist, and the second is specific to the original EverQuest. Thus, the links provided are either superfluous or woefully inadequate. Powers T 12:52, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
- You're missing the point. The goal is to point the user to as much information as possible. Naturally, the information found in the linked-to sites is going to dwarf what is found only on Wikipedia; WP is a general-purpose site, whereas these are specially-targeted sites. The second site is part of a family of sites that includes EQ, EQ2, and EQOA. The first was set up to be a quasi-interwiki link that points to the current article title, on that wiki. Most of the pages that include this template were found on that one. This can just as easily be changed to point only to the front page. Floppie 02:03, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, that isn't the goal, or shouldn't be. Navigation templates are supposed to direct the user to other articles on Wikipedia, nothing more. To select just one or two community sites is problematic at best, in terms of NPOV and verifiability. There's a reason most navigational templates don't include external links. See Template:Warcraft universe, for example. Powers T 13:12, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
- Also, regarding the specific links in question -- I apologize for not noticing the mechanics of the link, but the KnowledgePit site is woefully incomplete and very inaccurate in places. And I can't see how to get to the EQ2 and EQOA Allakhazam sites from the EQ link. Powers T 13:24, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
- The KnowledgePit site contains far more EQ-specific information than Wikipedia does; the linked-to node is, after all, devoted to EQ. To get to the other Allakhazam network sites, mouse over the Network Sites link toward the top-right corner of the page - it'll open a drop-down Javascript menu with links to the others. Floppie 13:54, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
- Question: Are you the creator of the KnowledgePit websites? Powers T 14:44, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
- Yes; I've been undertaking an attempt for the last few months to make information on these MMOs more readily-available and easy to obtain, especially for beginning players and, to a lesser extent, non-players. EQ is the only major node I have thus far. Floppie 15:43, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
- And no, before you make the assertion, I'm not just trying to drive traffic to my site(s) ;) I'm simply, as I said, trying to make detailed information for these games more readily-available. Floppie 15:55, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
- Whether you are not, it's still a conflict of interest. It just looks bad, regardless of whether it is or not. Powers T 21:10, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

I have removed the links again. Looking at the other templates for video games, none have external links. These templates are intended to navigate between Wikipedia articles, external links should be added to the articles in the "external links" section. Furthermore, you should never link to your own site (see WP:EL for more on this). Please do not readd these links again. Fram 19:43, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
- I support the removal of these links from the template; the External links section of the Everquest and Everquest II articles is the appropriate place for them (if anywhere).--Father Goose 22:42, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
