A Boy was Born

[edit]

The Adoration of the Shepherds

Created by Gerda Arendt (talk). Self nominated at 22:42, 24 November 2013 (UTC) Per Gerda's suggestion, Alfietucker (talk) can take credit. Re-nominated by me, George Ho (talk), at 08:19, 21 December 2013 (UTC)

hook length and accuracy is fine. Article is free of obvious close paraphrasing. Quite short but long enough. Picture is fine but the link is not strong. Minor spiff about the title should be resolved by xmas. Does anyone know of a freely licensed recording (or can arrange one?) Victuallers (talk) 19:32, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
Thank you! The boy was "born" on the composer's birthday - for the pun - and will grow until Christmas. The search is on for an English image clearly showing a boy, best from the 15th or 16th century, to match the bulk of the text. The one free image of the composer would not work, he's not 19 there, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:22, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
Added Alfietucker as contributor, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:27, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

Saved this approved nomination for Christmas. George Ho (talk) 07:53, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Johnbod found a better pic, but for DYK it needs perhaps even more cropping, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:22, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
  • The article was moved and the hook was "tweaked" to

::: ALT1: ... that A Boy Was Born (pictured), the first major vocal composition by Benjamin Britten, received its premiere in 1934 as a BBC broadcast?

This hook is wrong, because the piece broadcast in 1934 was called A Boy was Born. When the BBC recorded and broadcast it again in 2013 for the centenary celebrations of Britten's birth, it was still called A Boy was Born, the name under which it is published and listed by the Britten Foundation. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:20, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
Gerda, please don't confuse the administrator/promoter with two almost similar hooks. I had a right to tweak the original hook, and you still insist on the capitalization of "Was/was"? The article moved to "A Boy Was Born" because the consensus and the guideline say so. --George Ho (talk) 19:01, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
  • George, you can check my reviews, I keep repeating that it is better for the clarity of a discussion NOT to change a given hook, in general (unless it's a truly minor spelling error or a missing (pictured.). In this special case, it also explains the name of the nomination. Further: ALT1 is wrong, because the name of the piece when the broadcast happened was A Boy was Born, we should not change history. It hurts me that my name is attached to such a thing, - I almost wish I had not written the article. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:37, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
Changing the hook to "Was" per the title of the article and consensus on the article's talk page. Striking the alt hook (which is now identical) to avoid confusion. BencherliteTalk 12:32, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
I also strongly recommend that the image is not used. It has nothing to do with the piece. Saying "pictured" suggests that the hook is about the image, when it is in fact a generic depiction of a nativity scene. BencherliteTalk 12:34, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

Closing this because Gerda has withdrawn the nomination as a consequence of her disagreement with the consensus view that the article title / text should use "Was" not "was". BencherliteTalk 13:26, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

I stroke above comment to revert Gerda's withdrawal, as Gerda let me undo the "harm" (if not damage) that was done. However, Gerda at her pride doesn't want credit. Therefore, I take credit as a nominator. For my QPQ (not required though), here's Template:did you know nominations/Irene Cuesta. George Ho (talk) 08:19, 21 December 2013 (UTC)
George, I thought that you should have opened a new nomination. I wrote an article called A Boy was Born which is the title under which the piece is published and, if you ask me, is the title our article should have. The present article, following the MOS instead of the creator's intention, doesn't mention that name at all! I was called disruptive for trying to mention it at least once. I don't disagree with a "consensus": I believe that a name is a name and nothing to vote about. I looked forward to seeing this on Christmas but as it is am simply ashamed. Merry Christmas. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:02, 21 December 2013 (UTC)

I have reinstated this on the basis that we are short of Christmas hooks and Gerda has agreed to allow it to run if the original title appears in the hook, which is fine by me. Gatoclass (talk) 11:42, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

The original was "tweaked" several times to a version I would not have signed and is
... that A Boy was Born (pictured), the first major vocal composition by Benjamin Britten, received its premiere in 1934 as a BBC broadcast? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:53, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Gerda, once this hits the main page it's out of our control, and it's possible that the request may be made—and granted—at Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors to capitalize the "was". If that happens, there won't be anything we can do. I wanted you to be aware of the possibility up front, since you do feel so strongly about the orthography. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:06, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
OK, I am promoting the original hook, as this was reviewed, and is what it preferred. Thanks, Matty.007 18:18, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
Original as Gerda put it. Matty.007 18:19, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
