Confusing?
[edit]This article was set up referring to the Englewood Cliffs studio which Van Gelder opened in 1959. There seems to be some confusion now as editors are now adding recordings made at the Hackensack studio at Van Gelder's parents' house. Any suggestions as to how to go from here? Two separate articles? The "logical" solution might be to include both studios in the same article, but my doubt here is whether the Hackensack studio was actually refered to as the Van Gelder Studio. Feedback? --Technopat (talk) 14:11, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, they are both referred to as VGS. We only need one article. I'm surprised you reverted my edit. Viriditas (talk) 14:36, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- Greetings Viriditas - I left you a note on your talk page before removing your edit (and pasting it here for future use). The reason I reverted was that the lede here specifically refers to Englewoods. Re the two articles/same article debate, I was in two minds about it, but if the Hackensack studio was originally credited on albums as VGS, there's no doubt 'bout it. Regards, --Technopat (talk) 14:44, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- It's easy to confirm, as most of these albums are already on Wikipedia with this information. I have a solution. If if works for you, leave it in. If not, change it. I'll add it now. Viriditas (talk) 14:46, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- Most Wikipedia articles I've come across refer to Hackensack, but not specifically mentioning it as VGS. Hence my doubt.--Technopat (talk) 14:51, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- Ah, I see the problem. I'm going off of the actual liner notes. Articles like Somethin' Else, Whims of Chambers, Newk's Time, and Gil Evans & Ten reflect this. Viriditas (talk) 14:54, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- To clarify, I'm going off of the remastered CD liner notes. Viriditas (talk) 14:59, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. I was wondering what the original LP sleevenotes said, 'cos all the remastering has been done at Englewood and might not actually reflect the nuance. --Technopat (talk) 15:05, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- For Blue Train, it says, "Recorded on September 15, 1957 at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey. Originally recorded and remastered in 2003 by Rudy Van Gelder." Viriditas (talk) 15:08, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

Blue Train
[edit]Pending further discussion (see above) have removed the following edit from the article as it was recorded at the Hackensack studio, not at Englewood:
- September 1957: Blue Train - John Coltrane
--Technopat (talk) 14:36, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- What would you like to discuss? Whenever a reference is made to Van Gelder Studio, it is followed by the location. We only need one article. Viriditas (talk) 14:38, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- Re your "What would you like to discuss?", I was just trying to get consensus.--Technopat (talk) 14:47, 25 October 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, I'm adding something now. Viriditas (talk) 14:48, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

Back to Square One
[edit]I started this article back in September with the intention of only referring to recordings made at Englewood. Another editor, Viriditas, more or less convinced me (see above) to include Hackensack, but having just got back from a Blue Note Records Discography: 1955-1956 at jazzdisco.org, which shows just what a workaholic Van Gelder was, am beginning to think that this list will have to be split into two before it gets way out of hand. Feedback, anyone? --Technopat (talk) 17:56, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
- The article is currently 5,564 bytes. We don't have to worry about splitting it out at this time. And, the link you provide isn't a really good overview of the studio recordings on one page. I've seen the full list, and it isn't that big. I can't see it going over 30kb. However, it would be a good idea to talk about the difference between a list and an article, and what approach you want to take to the future of this article. In other words, it is reasonable to have an article only about the studio, and another that holds the list of recordings, but let's cross that bridge when we come to it. Of course, I would like to hear what you plan on doing, as you seem to be the go-to person on this topic. And if that means expanding and improving it, I would be willing to follow your lead if I see you are going in the right direction. Viriditas (talk) 00:51, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
- Greetings Viriditas - thanks for feedback. If you're not worried 'bout bytes, neither am I. And please don't consider me the "go-to" here - I only pop in while I'm waiting for the kettle to boil...
- I agree with your suggestion "article only about the studio, and another that holds the list of recordings". I think Van Gelder's contribution to jazz warrants a dedicated article on his studio - which could possibly be re-incorporated to his "personal" article if too many people object (though I do think it warrants its own space) - and with this particular one being a mere "List of...". Cheers! --Technopat (talk) 01:12, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Englewood Cliffs vs. Englewood
[edit]In the first line of the article it indicates the studio is located in Englewood Cliffs. Later in the article, it refers to Englewood. These are two neighboring towns in New Jersey, but their borders have been set since the 1890s, so which town is the studio located in? -Krasnoludek (talk) 16:53, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
- Greetings Krasnoludek - I don't actually have the answer to this one, but a quick shuffle through half a dozen randomly selected albums gave six recorded at Englewood Cliffs and none at Englewood. Based on that empirical study, with a margin of error of around zero, I'm going to modify the text acordingly. If anyone else out there is in a position to confirm, or revert, please do so. Cheers! --Technopat (talk) 17:13, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
21 March 2010 edits
[edit]Hello! I've done some interesting changes. Now, there are a pair of nice photos of the studio around. Anyone knows how to insert 'em in the article? I mean, is it possible without an image copyright?--Dan8700 (talk) 17:53, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
Merge?
[edit]I do not see why this article should have a separate existence from the biographical piece. Only a redirect is really be necessary. Philip Cross (talk) 22:59, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
- In my opinion, it would become too chaotic, especially because of the lists of recordings, but maybe we could create a pulldown menu to hide them when unused. Dan8700 (talk) 16:51, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
- The lists could still be turned into a separate article including the location recordings which are (almost) completely absent at present. I'm not keen on WP giving space to such discographical minutiae, RVG's credits are easy to find on the web, but I suggest it as a possible compromise. Philip Cross (talk) 18:10, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
- Hi! Take a look at the new Englewood list. That's what I meant! In that way, we'll save space. You can merge the articles, now. If you're ok with it, I'll change the other list later on - or after the merging. Dan8700 (talk) 10:19, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Omission on "Van Gelder Studio" page
[edit]The page on "Van Gelder Studio"
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Gelder_Studio
Has a list of recordings made at this studio but omits Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay" album which was recorded there on January 27, 28, 29, 1970. I saw it on the back of the record and I'm sure it's independently verifiable.
