I've added merge tags between this article and Urban wilderness, which has recently been tagged original research. So if there's nothing that can be verified in that article, it should be a redirect instead. Whitejay251 07:21, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Agree; there doesn't seem to be much useful content there - MPF 11:10, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Well, I put the tag on it. I was saying that it needs citations. The concept exists, but it depends on a particular interpretation of the meaning of "wilderness." All I am requesting is that that be backed up by appropriate references. The concept is broader than "urban forestry," so I think it would be difficult to merge and I'm not in favor of that. Sunray 22:18, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
As a long time arborist, I have never heard the term "Urban wilderness." Urban wilderness, and urban forestry, as described, definitely overlap, but UF doesn't limit species to natives, or necessarily encourage reversion of developed sites to a natural state. UW advocates should develop and document their article and show its relationship to the other disciplines of UF, Arboriculture, and landscape architecture. pechaney 9/12/2006.
I'm entirely against a merger. Urban Forestry in short relates to the planting of trees in an urban environment. The Urban Wilderness movement however doesn't want to stop at planting isolated trees, but advocates far-reaching integration of wilderness into the urban environment; this includes green (gras) roofs, wilderness-viaducts (is that a valid english term?) and continuous strips of green into the city. The article does need work, but the movement, of which I personally am a proponent, is relatively new (though rooted in similar older movements such as garden cities). All in all, although they share most of their goals, their methods differ, in that UF is only an element of UW; hence a merger seems not in order. Egregius 12:10, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, I'm convinced. I'll remove the tags momentarily. Whitejay251 06:26, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Sociological implications?

Can someone add a section on the sociology of urban forestry? My experience in the USA is that urban/suburban tree ownership is correlated with either the income level or education level of the land owner. Surely this has been studied somewhere. A reference would be appreciated. thanks. Delmlsfan (talk) 03:10, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

US Focus

This article is totally US-focused. I have added a brief section on teh UK linking to some other WP pages on UK urban forestry. It really needs a much wider focus as tehre is great urban forestry in the Netherlands, Germany and many other cities across the world. Also, ths constraints section seems to have been written from a theoretical rather than practical perspective. — Preceding unsigned comment added by The Yowser (talkcontribs) 12:56, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Too many references

The References section of this article needs attention; it is overwhelmingly long. (Spin off to Bibliography of urban forestry?) Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 11:31, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Editors tracking this article may be interested in an Article for Deletion discussion now underway in relation to the article, Urban reforestation. See: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Urban Reforestation. Input welcome! Kind regards, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 22:02, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Adding wildlife to the benefits section

I think urban forestry can also provide habitat to wildlife and provide people with observing opportunities. Yuxiwan (talk) 01:45, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Adding examples in Asia

This article only covers US and UK. I'm adding examples in Asia to provide a worldwide view.Yuxiwan (talk) 01:45, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Adding an Urban Forestry Planning section

I'm working with a group on drafting a section on the planning aspect of urban forestry. It is to include the benefits and challenges of planning, types of urban forest plans (ie master plans), common types of criteria & goals included in a plan, planning methodology, and planning administration. Suggestions are welcome! Thanks --Wilderbound (talk) 20:59, 12 May 2019 (UTC)

Urban Wildlife

We plan to expand on the problems and benefits of urban wildlife in this section of the article. Emphasis will be placed on how wildlife interacts with the urban forest. A Wiki page already exists on urban wildlife, so we may provide references to this content. Examples of human-wildlife interactions in cities across the world will be referenced throughout this section. A case study of owl populations in Krakow, Poland will be used to discuss the impacts of urban forest biodiversity and wildlife.[1] A broad literature review on human-wildlife interactions in cities will be cited to discuss some of the impacts urban wildlife has on humans and vice-versa, as well as management strategies.[2] Erikaw7 (talk) 15:46, 14 April 2020 (UTC)erikaw7

Toronto??

Shouldn't the "Toronto" focus section be moved to the article about Toronto? Otherwise, it creates a precedent for adding "Urban forestry in ____" sections here for every city on earth. Rep07 (talk) 16:50, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Yes, I dislike that kind of geographic listing, unless it's in a page devoted to being a list of instances. For example Kindergarten. So I'm in favour of moving that text around. If Toronto doesn't have that kind of section, it might be in a different page again. -- Rixs (talk) 07:34, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Hey we are going to add an article section devoted to Canada's role in pioneering urban forestry in response to the Dutch Elm Disease. Lton55 16:48, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Hey this is for Julia, this is Leighton from FREC 4454 ^ I added this for the rough draft and will now re-iterate, "Hey we are going to add an article section devoted to Canada's role in pioneering urban forestry in response to the Dutch Elm Disease." Lton55

Urban Forest Assessment

We plan to add a section discussing urban forest assessment. The basic concept of urban forest assessment and its uses, tools, and approaches will be covered. We hope that this section will provide some insight into the workings of assessment techniques and highlight its importance in preserving, managing, and planning for urban forests. MPage9 (talk) 20:46, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Economic Benefits

Planning on adding an Economic section to the Benefits header. This will include "during" and "after" life subsections. The "during" subsection will quantify ecosystem services provided by urban forests and the "after" subsection will discuss using urban wood waste as wood products. GOKIES21 (talk) 22:23, 17 April 2020 (UTC)GOKIES21

Scandinavia

We plan to add a section discussing the urban forestry practices in Scandinavian countries. For our revision we plan to add a section under the "By Country" header. By providing another perspective in the development and use of urban forestry, we can both compare international methods of sustainability as well as provide a deeper background for potential solutions that arise within urban areas. We intend to detail their history in urban forestry, their practices, and their general forest composition. Erinp3 (talk) 13:53, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

Students in FREC 4454 Spring 2020

Students in [FREC 4454[1]] are working on edits to this article during Spring 2020. Juliagfee (talk) 13:39, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Hey Julia, my talk contributions are in the "Toronto??" section. Lton55 —Preceding undated comment added 17:55, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

Improving Functions and Values Section

Planning to edit the Functions and Values Section for clarity and check citations. Maybe the social and environmental functions/values should be split into two sections? Thinking there should also be a reference to the role of urban forestry in mitigating urban heat island. Tgs324 (talk) 23:12, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

Planning to edit/add ecosystem services to this Wikipedia page. Anything I should know before doing this? The focus will be on provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural services provided by the urban forest. Also trying to figure out which section would be best to add this to or possibly adding a new section. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ethanap (talkcontribs) 12:31, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

Ecosystem Services

We plan to add a section discussing the ecosystem benefits provided by urban forestry, and why it is important for the community and urban foresters to understand the ecosystems provided by urban forestry. Lexi0534 (talk) 21:42, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

Urban Wildlife Habitat, Students in FREC 4454 Spring 2021 (team 1)

Hello all, Myself and my two teammates on this project will be expanding upon the urban wildlife section of this article in the coming weeks to elaborate on how the urban forest is managed with relation to wildlife. This will include information on biodiversity in the urban forest, managing for endangered species, and managing for invasive species. Kerif42099 (talk) 16:21, 13 April 2021 (UTC) Keri, Kat, and Vance

Street Trees

We plan to expand the street trees section by discussing the planning of street trees as part of the urban forest in the coming weeks. This will include how street trees are a key element of the urban forest by providing services to enhance the landscape and community, however, street trees require intensive planning and management because of challenging site conditions. Susans99 (talk) 19:16, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

China - Urban Forest initiatives

My group and I are planning on expanding on examples and initiatives in China. This will include points updating/expanding the Nanjing Vertical Forest tower topic, urban forestry provisioning and spacing, specific types of pollution and how trees can help, and example cities of Wuhan and Beijing. The rough draft will be in my sandbox! ABel227 (talk) 23:40, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

Urban Forest Tree Canopy Inequity, Students in FREC 4454 Spring 2022 (Team Betula)

We are planning on adding content that addresses urban forest tree canopy cover inequity to this Wikipedia article. This will introduce the issue, as well as provide a definition of it and descriptions of its social and environmental impacts within the urban environment. The Past, Present, and Future of Urban Forestry in Australia, FREC 4454 Spring 2022, Team Diospyros

Our team plans to add information regarding the practice of urban forestry in Australia under the "By Country" section as the entire continent has yet to be explored on the pre-existing Wikipedia page. In detail, we will study urban forestry origin, climatic complications, and solutions to such (present and future), supplemented with real-life examples. — Preceding unsigned comment added by HokieVarner2022 (talkcontribs) 22:37, 13 April 2022 (UTC)

Impact of Climate Change on Urban Forestry, FREC 4454 Spring 2022

My group and I are planning on adding content addressing the impact of climate change on the practice of urban forestry, how urban forestry can be used to mitigate worsening effects of climate change and instances of changes that municipalities themselves have implemented. This would likely fit under the practice section. We will go into detail about how the practice of urban forestry is evolving with the growing threat of climate change and how it can be an important tool in reducing the negative impacts felt in urban settings.
