Structure of lead
[edit]Good writing means that the information that is most important to readers comes first -- they shouldn't have to pass over minor stuff to get to the most important stuff. I don't object to the storm history being in the lead, but it shouldn't be the first thing -- the fact that this storm is a major disaster for the Phillipines should come out in the first sentence or two. (I did an edit that set it up that way, but it was reversed, and I don't want to get into a fight about it.) Note that this article is at the "top of the news" on the front page. Regards, Looie496 (talk) 18:20, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
- I just cross-posted the same thing -- Excellent work done very quickly. What we need now is a plain-language lead, with technical info moved to the next section, and getting straight to the impact. Interestingly, this page is noted by Google News top sources fourth, after New York Times, Bloomberg, and BBC. It should be presented first for popular audiences, second for meteorologic experts. Cheers, Nrehnby (talk) 18:31, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
- Acctully generally in all leads the MH comes first. And the structure of the articles are the same worldwide.Jason Rees (talk) 22:00, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
- The lead of the article should summarize the rest of the article. If the consensus structure of storm articles is that the meteorological history is the first non-lead section, then maybe the first lead paragraph should also mirror it. But as it is, that lead paragraph is too long. This should be trimmed down. --seav (talk) 03:04, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
- Let's use Hurricane Katrina as a guide <<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_katrina>>. If no-one else has done so, I will attempt it tomorrow noon, PST. You east-coast early birds should take this on if you are able. 08:48, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
- Ill start rewriting it later but might not be able to finish tonight.Jason Rees (talk) 18:22, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
- Apologies, just finished twelve hour work day, and didn't get to it. Will check back tomorrow and see if anyone has. Nrehnby (talk) 06:04, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, heck I'm up anyway. I took a stab at a possible lead. However, I'm a copyeditor, not a meterologist, and I could not ensure that information cut from the lead is accurately covered in the Meteorological section. Also, the sources are a mess, and I'm a newbie. Here's my attempt at a popularized lead, if someone wants to take it from here. best, Nrehnby (talk) 07:56, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- Typhoon Ketsana (International designation: 0916, JTWC designation: 17W, PAGASA name: Ondoy) formed early on Wednesday, September 23, 2009, about 860 km (535 mi) to the northwest of the Pacific island nation of Palau. [Then one sentence summarizing how it evolved into a Typhoon, in language most readers can understand. The rest can be covered in Meteorological history.]
- On Saturday, September 26, Typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines, bringing torrential rains to Metropolitan Manilla not seen since the start of rainfall record-keeping. It produced only moderate winds, but its record-high rainfall of 455 millimetres (17.9 in) in 24 hours led to the worst flooding in living memory.[citation needed] President Gloria Arroyo declared a "state of calamity" in Metropolitan Manila and 25 storm-hit provinces, allowing officials to use emergency funds for relief and rescue. On Monday, September 28, President Arroyo appealed for international aid <<http://www.manilatimes.net/index.php/component/content/article/42-rokstories/2940-flood-ravaged-philippines-appeals-for-world-aid>> as it struggles to cope with floods that have killed at least 240 people, displaced nearly half a million people, and caused an estimated US$50 billion in damages. [We can stop here, and allow further details to be covered in Aftermath.]
Lets wait and see what happens during today, since its made landfall on Vietnam, its gonna weaken and i suspect might dissipate later today. But we will need more than 1 sentance for the MH in lead, sicne the leads generally fit rather nicely into the season articles.Jason Rees (talk) 08:26, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Importance
[edit]They should make this page top-importance. Coolknot (talk) 10:21, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, just because the storm is a current emergency doesn't mean that the article about the storm itself is of top importance. --seav (talk) 12:29, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
- Upping to high importance now that the death toll is nearing 300. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 12:49, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- Upping to high importance for WP:Philippines. Bearian (talk) 19:01, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Citations
[edit]I've added several citations, but my form is probably incorrect. Could someone fix those please? Bearian (talk) 18:42, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
- Im playing with the MH of the article now so ill sort them out.Jason Rees (talk) 18:46, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you! Bearian (talk) 22:28, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, me too! (see above) Nrehnby (talk) 08:05, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Deaths
[edit]I want to try and keep a tally off all the deaths on here so we can place them in the Article and get the figure right instead of having 3 or 4 different numbers floating around the article. If people could help update this as they hear about deaths id be gratefull. Please provide a source though. Jason Rees (talk) 12:37, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- Philippines: 464 dead, 39 missing
- Vietnam: 163 deaths, 12 missing
- Cambodia: 43
- Laos: 17 deaths, 143 missing
- Thailand: None
- China: None
Criticism of the Government
[edit]I added a quote and citation, with background, about criticism fo the Philippines government's lack of preparation. Is this the appropriate place? Bearian (talk) 15:26, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- First, it must be on the aftermath section. Second, there is no such nationality as Philippino--JL 09 q?c 15:32, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, apologies for my spelling error. Bearian (talk) 19:01, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, it's okay. Somebody copy-edited the entry.--JL 09 q?c 16:26, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
Ketsana or Ondoy?
[edit]What's it's real name? Blueknightex (talk) 09:24, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
- Ketsana is the official name by the Japan Meteorological Agency, which is designated the main HQ for the naming of these systems. Ondoy is the unofficial name used only in the Philippines by their organization (PAGASA). The JMA name is always official and is the basic used.Mitch32(The Password is... Typhoon Pepeng
[edit]The supposedly "bigger" upcoming typhoon currently 360 km East Northeast of Catarman, Northern Samar. Anyone care to mention it on this page? Regards.. ≈ Commitcharge
- Pepeng will not be mentioned on this page, but we may have to mention Parma it depends on the damage i think.Jason Rees (talk) 19:06, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Emission of loans
[edit]- This source might be included into the aftermath section conderning the Philippines. Also I saw elsewhere (Bloomberg?) a statement that the state certainly is forced to import rice, what increases the world food crisis. (Might also correspond to Parma) My English's too bad to include this information, so please any volonteer. ;-) --Matthiasb (talk) 08:11, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- Refound it, see Reuters: Philippines says may import rice as storms hit crop. --Matthiasb (talk) 11:29, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- As said in that article, the Philippines routinely imports race with or without disasters or with or without food crises. Imported rice sells cheaper than locally harvested rice. –Howard the Duck 15:52, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
If you take a quick look at the "article", you'll see what I'm talking about. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:46, 1 April 2011 (UTC)
