We really need to cite our resources

[edit]

Basically, there is not citations throughout the entire article, I might look on the internet later and add them. Dorky1234 (talk) 06:11, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Global track map

[edit]

It is a month into 2023, I think there should be a global track map by now. RandomInfinity17 (talk) 22:43, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Just a heads up guys please do not use the Joint Typhoon Warning Center's stats on Wikipedia

[edit]

Good morning my fellow Wikipedians if you're reading this. I need to announce something on using the JTWC pressure reading or wind readings as we have been having a little problem with new users and IPS adding the JTWC pressure reading for Cyclone Freddy. We do not use the JTWC pressure or wind readings on Wikipedia. We use Meteo-France (MFR) stats in the South-West Indian basin, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) in the Australian basin, Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) in the South Pacific, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) in the West Pacific, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in the North Indian basin, Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) in the Central Pacific, and National Hurricane Center in the North Atlantic and East Pacific. I understand some users are new and sometimes IPs don't know the rules of Wikipedia so I consider all those edits good faith. Please go to those aforementioned agencies websites and get your sources from those meteorological agencies website. Please do not get your source from the JTWC website and add their pressure readings and/or wind readings to this article since this article uses official stats, please guys I beg of you, cheers :). Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 14:33, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I would also like to add something I have yet to mention earlier. We can use the Joint Typhoon Warning Center's stats when counting how many C5 equivalent cyclones formed during the year but not as the official stats as the official stats should be from the local RSMC, this is how we do things on these Tropical Cyclones in XXXX articles, that is why I added what I add during this edit if anybody is wondering. I hope this does not confuse anybody cheers once again :) . Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 17:39, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think I got what you are saying.
You are saying that we should use whatever the main warning meteorological agencies data that one should be used. Dorky1234 (talk) 06:33, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Dorky1234 I know I'm responding a bit late since I was busy today, but yes, sir/ma'am, we should use those agencies stats on this article or any other Tropical cyclone-related article on Wikipedia. the JTWC stats should be only used when we are counting how many Category 5 equivalent storms formed in the year or as a secondary not a primary. Article Citations Status

[edit]

After looking through so many of the tropical cyclones articles, a lot of changes, like damage totals and death tolls get added to this article without a corresponding reference. From this point forward, I’m going to start reverting unsourced changes to death tolls and damage totals. There is entire lists like Tropical cyclones in 2011 sourced by 4 sources total, with 90% of the article fully unsourced. The fact unsourced additions are still occurring in 2023 is probably hurting article quality more than the editor is helping with the updates. So reverting to basically get it through to people is the way to go now. Elijahandskip (talk) 19:14, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you're this concerned about missing citations, then add them yourself. It's not that hard and convincing editors to add citations by removing information they added isn't likely to work (especially with articles 5+ years old). RandomInfinity17 (talk - contributions) 23:05, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I didn’t mean with 5+ year old articles. I meant with this article specifically. With it being a current yearly article, there is no reason information should be being added that is unsourced. If this was on 2023 or Tornadoes of 2023, unsourced edits would be reverted within that day. So, just applying the same principle here to a current & high importance (and highly viewed) article. All the past tropical cyclone yearly article’s are just getting a boat load of templates. But yeah, I think reverting unsourced edits from now on should be the policy. Obviously, kind talk page messages each time explaining that edits have to be sourced. Maybe (just maybe), the habit of adding these damage/death tolls unsourced can be broken that way. Freddy and Kevin's image

[edit]

I know Kevin was stronger than Freddy, but should Freddy's peak image be shown with Kevin's in the February chart? Layah50♪ ( 話して~! ) 03:31, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Both of two are notable, but Freddy may be added because it may be the longest-lasting cyclone on record, breaking Hurricane John (1994). Thingofme (talk) 15:13, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I thought too. Thanks! Layah50♪ ( 話して~! ) 23:02, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Kevin was not in February... IntegerSequences (talk | contribs) 11:46, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Should Cyclone Yaku be included on this page?

[edit]

Does Cyclone Yaku count as a tropical cyclone? If so, in which basin would it belong? I notice that Yaku is included on the page South American Hurricanes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_South_America_hurricanes Tajjc (talk) 14:42, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yaku is currently in the far east of the Southeast Pacific, an area beyond the control of any official meteorological agency. There is currently no official information on Yaku's winds and barometric pressure, so it cannot be considered a tropical cyclone, although the Peruvian meteorological agency calls it a "unorganised tropical cyclone". the global track map

[edit]

the global cyclone track map likely needs a update because its really outdated as i think the latest image of it came from march Rainbow Galaxy POC (talk) 21:11, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done Rainbow Galaxy POC (talk) 13:25, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Can it be updated again with Mocha's full track and Fabien's track? The West Pacific and South-West Indian Ocean Tracks on their pages also need updated. 206.248.230.180 (talk) 01:27, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mocha deaths

[edit]

As of now, there is two reports on the total death count for Cyclone Mocha. ASEAN claimed 152 deaths while the National Unity Government of Myanmar claimed 463. This messes up the total death count for tropical cyclones in 2023 due to different death claims. Which source should be used? ▶💬 14:29, 24 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cyclone Fabien's death toll

[edit]

In this article (Tropical cyclones in 2023#May), Cyclone Fabien is marked with 2 deaths. However, the seasonal article and section for Cyclone Fabien (2022–23 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season#Intense Tropical Cyclone Fabien) does not mention any deaths. Since the chart did not have any references for Cyclone Fabien, I marked the section with a citation needed template. Sleepinthestars, since you added the two deaths to the chart in this edit, could you add a citation or let someone know in this discussion where the information about the two deaths came from? Thank you! Elijahandskip (talk) 01:43, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cyclone Mawar's death toll

[edit]

Should Cyclone Mawar's death toll in Tropical cyclones in 2023#May be marked as 0 or Unknown (current)? Sources like Al Jazeera directly state, "No fatalities or major injuries reported in the aftermath of the heaviest storm to hit the US territory since 2002." ([1]). Since there is multiple reliable sources that say "no deaths" or "no fatalities", I personally think the chart should have the death toll set at "0" rather than "Unknown". Anyone have thoughts? Elijahandskip (talk) 01:47, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cyclone Ilsa damage total

[edit]

In this article, (Tropical cyclones in 2023#April), Cyclone Ilsa has a damage total and a death toll. There is a source provided for the death toll, ([2]), but the ABC News article does not mention a $4 million damage total, or actually any damage total at all for the cyclone. Can someone add a source for the damage total since at the moment, it is unsourced? Elijahandskip (talk) 01:51, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is May a very inactive month?

[edit]

I think we shouldn't determine the level of activity solely by the number of systems formed. Although May only saw the formation of four storms with three of them being named, those named storms were all intense and included two Category-5 tropical cyclones. Additionally, the ACE was 83.415, compared to the 1991-2020 average of 25. Even though we think about the number of storms, the average of tropical storms formed is 4, only 1 above the number for May. So I can't understand why the article says that May is a very inactive month. IntegerSequences (talk | contribs) 02:33, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Both metrics should be mentioned. While ACE is a better measure for the activity of the month, the average reader will be more familiar with the amount named storms. RandomInfinity17 (talk - contributions) 01:45, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cyclone 03B

[edit]

Should Cyclone 03B be added? I notice it on JTWC page (https://www.metoc.navy.mil/jtwc/products/io0323web.txt). IMD still regards it as a well marked low pressure area. Tajjc (talk) 15:27, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

 Done Its added. 🛧Layah50♪🛪 ( 話す? 一緒に飛ぼう!) 16:12, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Helios and Juliette

[edit]

I noticed Storms Helios and Juliette in the Mediterranean were removed from the Summary section, but they are still referred to throughout the rest of the article. Should they or should they not be included? Maple Doctor (talk) 05:09, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Update the map.

[edit]

The year summary map is outdated (It was removed). Can someone go update it? (Inform me on my talk page if someone already did) Nanchang17 (talk) 15:46, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It has been since done. Nanchang17 (talk) 14:52, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Freddy Image in February??

[edit]

I thought the Image for the month is exclusively for the strongest tropical cyclone of the month? an IP user reverted my edit removing Freddy's image because "They put Freddy because it broke many records" It doesn't make sense to me, We didn't even include Daniel's image in September despite it being a record breaking storm.
