Merge proposal
[edit]The article in mainspace Primos (TV series) is poorly written and clearly made mostly to talk about the controversy surrounding this series. The article in draftspace has more detail and is more neutral. Usually upcoming TV series stay in draftspace as well. Jaguarnik (talk) 00:57, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Jaguarnik, thanks so much for beginning this discussion. Your merger proposal is GREAT idea. I FULLY support this proposed merger. The text that was on that page was biased, non-neutral, and some of the worst writing I've seen on this site. In one of my edits on there, I removed it all. I crafted the text of THIS draft so as to be more neutral. The SPAs and IP addresses on the Primos (TV series) were a bit out of control, to be perfectly honest. Its time to rein them in and this merger may be one way (as well a possible semi-protection on that page once the merger is complete). Furthermore, I am annoyed that Amitie 10g jumped the gun and created the "Primos (TV series)" page, seemingly cribbing content from this draft. The same thing happened with the Hailey's On It! page, so that's the second time this year a draft I've spent a lot of time on has been copied, by going around the established processes. Almost makes me want to not edit drafts anymore. Can't people just follow the Wikipedia rules? I just don't get it. Historyday01 (talk) 19:16, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- UPDATE: Decided to be bold, and merged Primos (TV series) to this page.Historyday01 (talk) 02:44, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- User:Jaguarnik, User:Historyday01 - What you had left in article space was a redirect to draft space with history. Article space should not redirect to draft space. So I moved Primos (TV series) to Draft: Primos (TV series) (2), where it is a redirect to the other draft, but with history. Robert McClenon (talk) 03:37, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- Robert, thanks for your comment. I'll definitely keep that in mind in the future if this situation arises again (which it very well might, unfortunately). I just wanted to avoid what happened with the Hailey's On It! draft, which involved two separate articles on the same subject. Historyday01 (talk) 12:35, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Controversy section
[edit]We should come to a consensus about how detailed the controversy section should be. It is true that the controversy has gotten a lot of coverage from sources such as El País and La Izquierda Diario, but many people editing the article simply want to put as much detail criticizing the show as possible, and Wikipedia should be neutral. I don't know who to notify for this conversation. Jaguarnik (talk) 22:40, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
- I agree. I would say the controversy should remain ONE paragraph and no more. Otherwise, it would constitute an undue burden. In terms of involving others, I already posted about the early discussion on a bunch of WikiProjects, but no one seems to have bothered to contribute. Am reposting that again. I did submit it for AfC, which may help. I would like to hear from @User:Mayimbú considering their recent edit in which they added, in their edit summary, that they were "restoring Myrna Velasco's comments section, since they were part of the controversy as stated in the sources cited", which was followed by my edit, with a summary which noted that Velasco's comments, should be mentioned "but including the whole blockquote is WAY too much and violates WP:UNDUE" and that "we have to keep this page balanced" (followed by citing some rules). I doubt that the IP addresses who commented on the way-too-early "Primos (TV series)" page will comment here.Historyday01 (talk) 02:35, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- @User:Amitie 10g, @User:ItsCheck, @User:Tbhotch, and @User:I dream of horses, your contributions in this discussion would be appreciated. Historyday01 (talk) 02:43, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hey @Historyday01. I am afraid of tampering with this wiki page because of pervious edits I made that were unbeneficial and included copywrited content. Sorry, and good luck. ItsCheck (talk) 17:09, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- Ah ok. That's understandable. Historyday01 (talk) 17:22, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

- Update on my last comment. Now that this is a public page, rather than a draft, I am betting those IP addresses that edited the OTHER page will come to this one now. Oh boy. Not necessarily looking forward to that. Went through my posts on other projects to update the link, so that people are going to the right place if they are joining this discussion after finding it posted on an appropriate WikiProject.Historyday01 (talk) 15:57, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- If necessary, there is a page to ask for protections of a page, although I think they need proof of enough vandalous activity to actually apply any protection.Jaguarnik (talk) 17:43, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think we would need more proof for vandalism before requesting semi-protection and the like. Historyday01 (talk) 18:48, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- @User:ForTheGrammar, some of the other language Wikipedia pages have controversy sections, but we don't have to follow their lead here. I would say it is better to NOT have a controversy section and would argue that those other wikipedias erred on adding such a section.Historyday01 (talk) 19:39, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
- Virtually most of the discussion of the show online when it first got revealed surrounded the controversy over the direction, with very real consequences (particularly the delays of the premiere itself). I'd say not having a section detailing the controversy is rather counter intuitive, it can be read as Wikipedia hiding information to help the show's reputation, meaning it's not being neutral about the topic. The controversy can be discussed in a section while remaining neutral, just has to be worded carefully so any curious person can know why the show is taking so long to premiere. Kirb-Star99 (talk) 22:58, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hopefully, some people will still want to watch Primos. I hope people's criticism doesn't prompt Disney to yank Primos entirely. 2603:6010:8B00:44FF:D43F:499D:A30F:EDAF (talk) 19:09, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
- Currently, I am keeping the controversy section in a subsection under reception entitled "Pre-Release". It should NOT be renamed "controversy" under ANY circumstances. Historyday01 (talk) 13:22, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Examples
[edit]Please add the examples of negative stereotypes. A character is called "Gordita" (a slur for "fat" people), the city is called "Terremoto", and it shows a stereotype of latinos' houses being unclean.
Sorry for my poor english. 2800:98:122E:7520:3C9A:ED5D:8D55:3EE7 (talk) 01:12, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- No, that would be too much undue emphasis to list them all. Historyday01 (talk) 01:30, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- It is not the business of the Wikipedia article to describe in detail the controversy of the show, as there are articles linking to it, and there is a brief statement "the names of certain characters were criticized". Those interested can go read for themselves. Also, gordita does not necessarily have to be a slur, in Mexican culture it is a term of endearment (I don't know how other Spanish-speaking countries feel about being called gordita), therefore to write that it is a slur when there is no obvious proof that it is (the character called gordita is in fact very thin) makes the article have bias. Similar thing with the city Terremoto Heights allegedly being offensive and the unclean house.Jaguarnik (talk) 01:34, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- Exactly. If we get too into the weeds about what people have said, that wouldn't be good for users either Historyday01 (talk) 01:36, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- Besides, people are being a bit too hasty about this show; they should give it a chance, because I'm going to. 74.132.203.31 (talk) 23:03, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

- It is fine. Also not only one character is named that is a slang for "fat", one of the characters is named a Spanish name, not only it means cockroach, but it is a slang for a body part in female mammals. ElfieWolfie08 (talk) 00:20, 17 July 2023 (UTC)
- I don't think they're trying to offend anybody. Kline herself said that she felt the series is accurate to her own childhood and I think we should take her word for it. 2603:6010:8B45:FA00:4563:EB5B:33E2:60B7 (talk) 20:33, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
- Exactly. Historyday01 (talk) 23:55, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
- The vulgar slang word for the body part is surely another coincidence; I know that Disney would never condone an inappropriate joke if it was meant to be like that. Cookita (or Cuquita) seems to be a very sweet character; in the intro, she can be seen kissing Tater on the head and the latter can be seen smiling at her. 2603:6010:8B45:FA00:CC26:2A82:C549:5BF2 (talk) 08:20, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

- Actually, "Gordita" (which can be translated as "Chubby") can have more than one meaning. Since in some Spanish-speaking territories, the words "Gordito" or "Gordita" are also used as affectionate nicknames, especially between couples (which in English uses the closest nickname for this translation would be "Baby"), or parents to their children. - BrookTheHumming (talk) 16:16, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
- Right! That's an example showing that the team working on Primos is not racist. P.S.: This is not a sarcastic comment; it's truly what I believe. Sure, this show is a bit strange, but it's not something I think that deserves hate. It's made to represent Mexican-American culture, which Natasha Kline experienced when she was young. I trust Kline and I certainly hope Primos finally airs despite all of this opposition. Be glad Disney is trying to respond to your complaints anyway. 2603:6010:8B45:FA00:DC4E:CEFC:50A7:7640 (talk) 17:23, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
- Did I forget to mention that one of the staff members did not know Spanish was an actual language before working on the show? ElfieWolfie08 (talk) 01:38, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
- Ok... is there a reliable source that proves that? Historyday01 (talk) 02:24, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
- I am personally excited for Primos and don't think that everyone's stories about the "racism" involved with it are what they seem to others. We are talking about a show starring a girl who is more accustomed to the English language, having been raised in L.A.. And that shouldn't be considered a stereotype, because a similar thing happened to the singer, Selena, who could sing Spanish but speak very little, and everyone, even Mexicans loved her. This show reminds me of her. 2603:6010:8B45:FA00:C4AF:15FF:9469:9C38 (talk) 00:59, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
- At least the series creator and voice cast are Hispanic. 2603:6010:8B00:44FF:B1B3:866D:5136:CC19 (talk) 06:38, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

- Other characters' names like Nacho and Chacha are apparently criticized as well. In Primos' defense, Nacho is probably the boy's nickname; maybe he really likes nachos, and Chacha probably likes dancing. And while Chacha's design is a bit strange, I still believe that Primos is not as bad as everyone says it is. 74.132.203.31 (talk) 20:25, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
- The name Nacho really has nothing strange. It is a very common name in Spanish-speaking territories. In the article Nacho (given name) there are several examples of people with that name. Nachos (the food) being named after their creator, Ignacio Anaya ("Nacho" commonly being the short form of the name "Ignacio").
About Chacha... Perhaps the controversy is due to the fact that it is a nickname for housemaids or babysitters in some Spanish-speaking countries, although also in other areas, which is where that nickname originates, it is simply a diminutive for the word "muchacha" ("young girl"), so it is more likely that her name is based on the latter (especially considering that the character is just that, a young girl). BrookTheHumming (talk) 12:21, 8 October 2023 (UTC)- Also, people consider Chacha's design to represent a stereotype. However, a lot of cartoons give characters really weird designs; Helga Pataki from Hey Arnold! and Chacha both have a unibrow! It's just a cartoon thing. 74.132.203.31 (talk) 00:15, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

Nellie Ramírez-Humphrey
[edit]How do we know Nellie is younger than Tater? Is there a source that confirms her as such? 2603:6010:8B45:FA00:4FE:2ED5:274A:1073 (talk) 07:31, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
- Yes. "The newly announced main cast includes Myrna Velasco as Tater Ramirez Humphrey; Melissa Villaseñor as Tater’s younger sister, Nellie Ramirez Humphrey; Michelle Ortiz as Tater’s mom, Bibi Ramirez Humphrey; Jim Conroy as Tater’s dad, Bud Humphrey." https://www.comicsbeat.com/disney-animated-primos-theme-song/ Historyday01 (talk) 12:40, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
- OK. It just seemed so strange. I coulda sworn that Nellie looked taller and older than Tater. 2603:6010:8B45:FA00:78D7:375C:44A8:CCBD (talk) 05:46, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
- I'm glad that they added a note on Nellie's bio stating that she's taller. Now people won't think Nellie is older than Tater. She does seem to act like the stereotypical younger sibling; in the intro, we can see her messing around with Tater after she gets rolled in toilet paper by their baby sibling. And later into the intro, we see Nellie peeking into Tater's diary with an amused expression on her face. 2603:6010:8B45:FA00:7CFE:498:352C:3673 (talk) 06:39, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

Cookita or Cuquita?
[edit]The sources are getting really inconsistent here! Is the name of the youngest cousin spelled "Cookita" or "Cuquita"? 2603:6010:8B45:FA00:CC26:2A82:C549:5BF2 (talk) 08:16, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- ComicsBeat, The Road Company (has a profile on the voice actress), and BSC Kids say "Cookita", so I think we should keep that for now, unless there are reliable sources which use "Cuquita". Historyday01 (talk) 18:15, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- OK, then. I'm certain that the people working on Primos have harmless intentions; just because there are a few references and coincidences doesn't make this racist! 2603:6010:8B45:FA00:ECA9:89CA:D898:34DD (talk) 19:36, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- It's possible that Cookita is the actual name. I'm pretty sure there's no confirmation that the character's name is indeed the same as "cockroach" or you-know-what. I don't think she's named after either; it's just a coincidence. 2603:6010:8B45:FA00:58F8:D651:311C:BEF8 (talk) 04:10, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
- Cuquita is the correct one, and it's not necessarily just slang for genitalia either, it's basically a spanish version of the whole deal with people called Richard/Dick. Kirb-Star99 (talk) 23:00, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- Apparently, the little girl has been renamed "Lucita"? 2603:6010:8B00:44FF:B095:D8FF:D173:C314 (talk) 17:55, 8 April 2024 (UTC)

Viewership Data
[edit]Just because of the decline of TV viewership and the close down of BuzzFeed doesn't mean that alternatives still exist. Viewership data should be added because some sources are actually saying that the series is doing well on its network, and it helps that it is popular on Disney+. BaldiBasicsFan (talk) 16:54, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not sure. Considering all the criticism of Primos, I don't know if a second season would go well. 2603:6010:8B00:44FF:2438:E60E:32AB:A69A (talk) 22:11, 21 September 2024 (UTC)
