When was precision farming invented, and by who? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.225.76.50 (talkcontribs) 19:03, 31 October 2006

Quote

In the Midwest it is associated not with sustainable agriculture but with mainstream farmers who are trying to maximize profits by spending money only in areas that need fertilizer.

End quote

Now, what is midwest supposed to mean? I think it can mean the opposite of MiddleWest, or some parts of US or any other country for that matter.

Precision Agriculture definition

[edit]

Hi, I'm a researcher on Precision Agriculture (PA) and have participated in the process of the International Society of Precision Agriculture (ISPA) to reach an agreement on an official definition for PA. I thought it would be good for this article, which is indeed very good and complete, to include the definition and mention the existence of the ISPA. So I decided to make my first contribution to Wikipedia and edited the article. However, some hours later someone reverted my changes. I asked him the reasons and the answer was very disappointing. He said the text was innapropriate, that I was promoting ISPA and that anyone could create a society and make an 'official' definition. With this talk page I would like to know if this the most accepted position at Wikipedia or it is just a private opinion. My position is as follows:

  • The evolution of technology and continuous changes in agriculture (and in many other areas) make new names appear every now and then. Precision Agriculture, precision farming, smart agriculture, agriculture 4.0, satellite farming, digital agriculture, site-specific management, etc, etc, etc. are just some examples.
  • The problem here is that NO ONE REALLY KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE and WHAT ARE THEY NOT.
  • A scientific society is very important to define what is included and what not in a discipline.
  • ISPA is not a "a society started by anyone". It has the support of all the community of international academics researching on Precision Agriculture, which is not small (see the figures of the conferences organized by it and the figures of the huge amount of scientific papers published in journals such as Precision Agriculture (Springer) or many others). It is governed by an international board of directors elected democratically among the PA experts.
  • My intention was not promoting ISPA, I was just expressing there is science and a serious organization behind Precision Agriculture and that it is important to know all those experts have worked together to issue an agreed official definition for PA (follow this link for details on the process).
  • A scientific society such as ISPA and an official definition for PA provide a framework to define the scope of PA and not to mix it up with other fancy names, so it is worth mentioning that in this article. Not doing so does not contribute to have better articles.

I said it was inappropriate "for the lead section", which it was. You also left out my primary concern, which is that we should source any such addition to an independent, secondary source to ensure we're giving this definition (and any mention of this group) the appropriate weight. - MrOllie (talk) 12:55, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
and you forgot to mention that you removed the link I wrote to the International Society of Precision Agriculture wherever I put it on the article. My last chance was in the section External Links and you also reverted it... I don't see the point in don't letting the readers know there is a international scientific society behind Precision Agricultre (non-profit, of course...). 83.45.240.37 (talk) 20:05, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
