MK vs DC aliases
[edit]Before this escalates into an edit war the aliases, "(also known as MK vs. DCU, MK vs. DC, Mortal Kombat vs DC, or simply Mortal Kombat 8)", I can assure you that i've seen in interviews/reviews that all of these nicknames have been used at one time or another. However, my assurances mean nothing in wikipedia. I will be searching for references to support my claim. However, Rome wasn't built in a day so this may take a bit of time. But not a span of weeks, merely days, or until my schedule clears up. Sincerely Subzerosmokerain (talk) 23:23, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
Although many games do not state their many Aliases in their titles, like Street Fighter Alpha 3 does not have SFA3 and SFZ3 as well as their abbreviations in Japanese, MK vs DC is an exception. This game has been denoted by many titles prior to its release as well as after its release however as a Wikipedia, it is not WP:IINFO(see number 3). The MK8 numbering is nessecary for the Mortal Kombat articles for encyclopediac reference, just as to help guide readers which installments are considered part of the main line. The "Mortal Kombat vs. DC", I can level with you there, it does seem out of place in the intro. paragraph. MK vs DC, however is probably the most commonly used abbreviation so for familiarity reasons, that should be kept. Sincerely Subzerosmokerain (talk) 02:31, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
- Mortal Kombat 8 is taken out of context. The title had not been specified for the game when the article was printed. If you want to mention it's the eighth title, fine, but the game is not known by Mortal Kombat 8 -- that's just what the creator wrote because the game didn't have a title. Merely mentioning it's #8 in the series is fine, trying to say that's what the game is called is not. MK vs. DCU and MK vs. DC are simply re-hashes of the same name, with one having the "U" for "Universe". One or the other makes sense, but when going with the common name I'd go with MK vs. DC since that's likely what folks would abbreviate it as. In the end it's not a question of whether it was ever called a specific name, it's whether that name is even worth mentioning. Has there been significant coverage under a given nickname? If not it doesn't satisfy criteria for inclusion. I understand if you disagree, but if you do maybe we should take this to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games and get more opinions. --Teancum (talk) 16:55, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- I can agree with the removal of Mortal Kombat 8, however, the MK vs DCU and MK vs DC thing has me thinking. The most common occurance is MK vs DC, but the actual abbreviation of the game is MK vs DCU. Which one is taken in preference over the other? Sincerely Subzerosmokerain (talk) 02:37, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry for the late reply. I would say take the more popular abbreviation, as that is what it would be known by. See WP:COMMONNAME. In that case I'll remove MK vs DCU. Feel free to revert it and discuss this more if you don't agree with the edit. --Teancum (talk) 15:46, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Well, it's fine for now but I've been seeing in magazines like GamePro and Tips and Tricks using the other abbreviation but for convenience, we'll leave it this way simply because it's more recognizable. Sincerely Subzerosmokerain (talk) 19:00, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Endings
[edit]There are different endings depending on who the player completes the game as either character from any universe seen below. They are usually shown when a player defeats Dark Khan. We need to find a way to let the visitors to this page know that. Rtkat3 (talk) 12:29, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
DC Universe Endings
- Batman: Batman creates the OMACs (short for Outerworld Monitor and Auto Containment) as a way to defend New Earth from multiverse invaders. OMAC has already detected a breach in Metropolis.
- Captain Marvel: In order to regain control of his power, Captain Marvel was guided by Shazam through a focusing ritual. At it's apex, Captain Marvel unexpectedly visited a strange etherial world finding himself face to face with godlike beings calling themselves the "Elder Gods." Now able to tap into these gods' powers, Captain Marvel has new abilities he is only just beginning to master.
- Catwoman: The infusion of magic during the travel to different universes gave Catwoman the ability to change at will into a Black Panther with increased strength and agility.
- Darkseid: While imprisoned in the Netherrealm, Darkseid was left vulnerable as Shang Tsung tried to steal Darkseid's soul. In the midst of the soul drain, Darkseid reversed it regressing Shang Tsung to a withered old man. Darkseid broke free from his bonds as Shang Tsung pledges his allegiance in order to spare his own life.
- Deathstroke: Deathstroke emerged from the inter-universal conflict wiser and more cautious. Assassins from other universe would be unwanted competition. To maintain superiority, Deathstroke created a band of powerful assassins outfitted in his image. He now serves as Grand Master of the Deathstrike Clan.
- Flash: As a result of an aura attunement from Liu Kang, Flash discovered that he had retained a psychic bond with the warrior. The two agreed to warn each other of any cross universal breaches. It wasn't long before Liu Kang appeared and warned the Flash about the impending attack by the sorcerer Quan Chi.
- Green Lantern: On a distant planet, a huge pyramid unexpectedly rose from beneath the ground. It's origin was unknown, but it had the same energy than the one Batman detected from the other universe. Sinestro had learned of the pyramid and plotted to acquire whatever secret it contained. With Sinestro not knowing of the dangerous energies within the pyramid, Green Lantern rallies the Green Lantern Corps to keep the Sinestro Corps from getting their hands on the pyramid at all cost.
- Joker: As the worlds separated, Joker discovered that he had retained his new powers and managed to take over Gotham and holds tournaments where contestants fight to the death for his amusement with the winner fighting Joker.
- Lex Luthor: Using data stolen from the Special Forces, Lex Luthor constructed his own portal and breached the barriers that separated the two universes. He encountered the sorcerer Quan Chi and forms a deadly alliance with him.
- Superman: To seek protection against any future magical threats, Superman seeks the help of Shazam who uses ancient Kryptonian Lore to the creation of a new costume giving Superman an immunity to magic. Now sorcerers and demons can no longer harm the Man of Steel.
- Wonder Woman: Returning to Themyscira, Wonder Woman learned that there are strange relics scattered acrossed Themyscira. The relics are a sword, a shield, and a gold amulet are then used by Wonder Woman making the Amazons an unstoppable force for the preservation of Earth.
Mortal Kombat Endings
- Baraka: As the worlds returned to normal, the Kombat Rage disappeared except from the Tarkatans. Through the Rage, the savage Outworld race has descended to an even greater level of bloodlust. Marking their foreheads with the blood of their enemies, they now storm throughout the realms, dominating all.
- Jax: Badly injured from his fight with the otherworlders, Jax knew that he must use his cybernetics to save his own life. He underwent massive anatomical restructuring, replacing most of his body with mechanized, fully armored versions. Jax is now more powerful than ever, but at the cost of his humanity.
- Kano: Though the Kombat Rage disappeared when Dark Kahn was defeated, it drove Kano irreversibly mad. Turning on friend and foe, he became an outcast with a changed appearance. He has painted his face to further express his seething anger. Alone, in the depths of insanity, Kano endlessly repeats "Death to Shang Tsung... Death to Shang Tsung... DEATH TO SHANG TSUNG!"
- Kitana: With no base of operations following the destruction of Outworld, Kitana sought asylum in Earthrealm for her Edenian Resistance Fighters. Raiden granted them Shang Tsung's abandoned island, where they would remain hidden from mortal eyes. Kitana and her warriors remade the former site of the Mortal Kombat tournament into a bastion of beauty and Light. To honor the god of Edenia, they renamed their new home Argus Island.
- Liu Kang: Raiden used his intense studies to unlock the secrets of the Rock of Eternity enabiling him to create a Captain Marvel in his Universe. Raiden infused Liu Kang with some of his own power with the abilities of Argus, Fujin and others. For Liu Kang to transform, he shouts "Mortal Kombat."
- Raiden: Following the end of the inter-dimensional conflict, Raiden returned to Earthrealm and discovered that his sun weakened him severely. The sorcerer Quan Chi offered Raiden a jade-colored stone that would replenish his power - in return for his sworn allegiance. Where Quan Chi acquired this stone is a mystery. Raiden must now decide between servitude to an evil sorcerer... or mortality.
- Scorpion: Though Dark Kahn was defeated, his consciousness lived on. It found a host in the wrathful Scorpion. In the midst of his agony, Scorpion knew he would be turned into the most powerful being in the universe...if he survives the transformation.
- Shang Tsung: Impressed by Captain Marvel's fighting abilities yet angered at the defeat of his hands, Shang Tsung sought to create a race of super-warriors with Captain Marvel's abilities but would be a perversion of Captain Marvel's image. Through sorcery he combined blood from a torn piece of Captain Marvel's cape with the flesh of a Tarkatan corpse. Never before had his flesh pits echoed with the roar of such a monstrosity. With an army of Super-Tarkatans, Shang Tsung will be invincible!
- Shao Kahn: Though the Phantom Zone would usually weaken the Kryptonian criminals, the Phantom Zone actually restored Shao Kahn's powers enabling him to break free. He assembles an army of Kryptonian criminals who swear their allegiance to him in a plan to rule the universe.
- Sonya: During the "World Merge Crisis," a Green Lantern was killed and his Power Ring was transferred to Sonya. When the worlds separated, she still had the Power Ring at one charge as she must use it sparingly until she can find a way to replenish it's energy.
- Sub-Zero: After a fight with the Forces of Light, Sub-Zero discovered that he wasn't the assassin that he used to be. Upon his encounter with one of the Otherworlders, Sub-Zero decided to work for the good of the realm on his own terms. Sub-Zero left the Lin Kuei and donned a new costume befitting this new endeavor. But the Lin Kuei do not tolerate desertion, as he will soon discover....
Fan reception
[edit]Most Mortal Kombat fans disliked the game or had mixed feelings about it. I think it should be referenced in the article —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jedi89 (talk • contribs) 23:02, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Quick-finds
There is one disambig linkFile:MKvDC freefal.jpg is still a bit big. I would recommend resizing it to 500px wide or belowThe caption for Superman/Kano should probably be less about the image and more about something to do with the freefall kombat system, per WP:CAPTION. The Kollector's Edition image should probably mention a tiny bit about the Kollector's Edition as well. See The Beatles: Rock Band for a good example of captions. They don't have to be quite as long as the example article, but it gives you a good idea of what captions should be like. The publisher in a reference should only be wikilinked on the first reference that uses them (for instance, the first "GameRankings" would be linked, the second would not)
I noticed you replaced some wikilinks in the refs with italics. Only publications that consider themselves magazines should be in italics. Check Template:VG reviews#Code (the right side) for quick reference on which ones are considered magazines
Restate the title, or the abbreviated title, of the game more when leading a sentence. Right now it relies far too heavily on phrases like "The game..."I found at least one instance of "YOU". This and any others should be replaced.I see both Gamespot and GameSpot. Be sure all instances are GameSpot.Joystiq (ref 19) needs wikilinked, 20 should not. Similar instances with the GameRankings and Metacritic refs (39-42), wired.com (refs 50 and 59). Gamasutra should be wikilinked. Ref 55 has no publisher, which should be "United States Securities and Exchange Commission"

Lead
The lead makes no mention of the game's story. It should have an abbreviated story (one paragraph) between the two existing lead paragraphs. Nothing major, four lines or so should do it.This was the last title to be developed and published by Midway Games, as it filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and sold the rights to Mortal Kombat to Warner Bros. -- it's mentioned here, but nowhere else. Please add it (with a reference to back it up) somewhere in the development section
Mentioned the second part but I will pick up the lead tomorrow Subzerosmokerain (talk) 22:43, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
- Took a shot at the lead, needs a bit more reworking (and movement) but it's there. Also, i've already taken care of teh second bullet, it can be striked out. Sincerely Subzerosmokerain (talk) 02:46, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Gameplay
Replace the first two words ("The game") with MK vs DCThe first sentence feels long and a bit of a run-on. See if you can break it up into two sentences.the characters see the characters from the opposite universe as the invaders of their own - remove the second "the", making it the characters see characters from the opposite universeEd Boon did confirm that the player - the reader probably does not know who Ed Boon is. Mention his title and wikilink him. Also this sentence is confusing. I assume the reader is meant to know that because everyone is playable that some characters do not receive a full story arc?The players can fight in the air during the fall in a quasi-mini-game - wikilink mini gamehit certain buttons to be on top -- add during the fallAnother in-fight mode called "Rage mode" -- I would change in-fight mode to in-fight feature to avoid redundancythat fills every time you take damage or attack -- makes it sound like it fills instantlyThe effects of Rage mode causes -- remove The effects of

Plot/Characters
Cite the plot using quotes and the like from the game. See X-Men Legends for an example of how I recently updated that article.-not going to require this of youSuperman is seen stopping -- can just be Superman stops. Try to avoid "-ing" type words if you canThe plot definitely needs to be gone over once or twice more. Try to find ways to not use parenthesis, and see if you can break up the last paragraph into two. If it's possible to expand the plot without getting into WP:GAMECRUFT territory, please do. (but expansion is not a deal breaker here, so don't feel like you have to) I would definitely recommend taking the end of the game and breaking it out into a new paragraph as possible as a closing paragraph--doesn't need split into a closing paragraph, and otherwise is now fineEd Boon has said that some of the characters' abilities - Boon can be unlinked, as he should be linked per the aboveespecially on the DC side - needs a copy edit. Something like particularly those of the DC Universe -- also is "Universe", when referring to the universe in general and not the game, part of the title? If not all instanced should be lower case. If so, the opposite.Boon specifically mentioned that Superman - add For example,Boon revealed on the morning of July 7, 2009, via Twitter that two new characters were developed as downloadable content, Quan Chi from Mortal Kombat and Harley Quinn from DC Universe but had been scrapped. -- two sentences please. One for who was added, one for them being scrapped (and why). Scrapped should probably be replaced with a more professional word/phrase as well.
I fixed all writing issues but i'm still mulling over the "Universe" vs. "universe" spelling, if there are not that many instances, is it just assumed to be the Universe of the DC characters? Subzerosmokerain (talk) 22:45, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know that "Universe" is worth taking tons of time over. I'd say pick one and go with it. --Teancum (talk) 22:48, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
- Plot will take some time, might not be able to get to it until Saturday, hopefully done tomorrow. Subzerosmokerain (talk) 21:56, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Development
This eighth Mortal Kombat game was supposed to be "dark, gritty, serious" -- try using would have been instead of was supposed to beremained was the use of the Unreal Engine 3, the one used in Gears of War. -- replace the one with alsoDC Universe thus got restricted to a "Teen" rating -- replace got with was...Sub-Zero's "Spine Rip" from previous titles have been replaced due to how violent they were. -- might flow better as ...Sub-Zero's "Spine Rip" from previous titles were replaced due to their violent natureThe last paragraph as a mix of past and present tense. The first part makes it clear that the DLC was dropped due to Midway's troubles, the second half talks about potential DLC. I don't think the second half needs pulled, just restructured.
Fixed grammar issue and moved potential DLC characters to Character section, as it seemed more appropriate. Subzerosmokerain (talk) 21:56, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Reception
There is no mention of what the "Kollector's Edition" contains, though there is an image, and one brief mention of the sales. I would recommend adding information on the Kollector's Edition, renaming "Development" to "Development and marketing", then placing both the image and the info about the Kollector's edition in that section.Use a <br /> tag in the Reception infobox to put the other platform on a second line. Also to keep in line with the rest of the article, the PS3 version should be first.Replace all instances of "Game Rankings" with "GameRankings" (no space)Why is Well-Done wikilinked?ABC News praised Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe's story stating that "MKvsDC [did] a great job of giving players a cohesive..." -- the latter half would likely flow better if it was stating that it did "a great job of giving players a cohesive..."The COO of GameStop ' -- wikilink COO to Chief operating officer
Finished these suggestions and added Kollector's edition information inside the image caption. It might be enough for the article itself but i'll do try to add to the prose tomorrow if I have time. Subzerosmokerain (talk) 22:43, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
