A useful addition to this article would be the orgins of the mini-map, ie. what game first created the idea --Valacan (talk) 16:58, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Couldnt find a definitive answer but after reasearching for a few hours it the oldest game i found with a minimap as we understand it is Defender (1980), added it to the page! would be really cool if someone expanded the history section !! 222emilia222 (talk) 03:32, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Will someone tell me the difference between automap and mini-map they seem to me to be very similar, a lot of overlap in what they could be. Many game maps I know could be both mini-map and automap at the same time. The only definite difference I can see is the mini-map is in the corner of the screen and automap is in the centre of the screen and/or has to be bought up manually. Both may be turned on or off in some games, both show same things enemies, allies, terrain, other important locations and items. Both may show the whole area or just the surrounding area.

Both may be obscured by blackness/fog of war and drawn automatically as the player uncovers the environment. Some mini-maps are completely uncovered at the start Grand Theft Auto, Powermonger. But like automaps most mini-maps are obscured by fog of war, like most strategy games Civ, Age of Empires.

So are automap and mini-map different things, and what's the big difference. Carlwev (talk) 18:02, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've merged Automap into Mini-map Brightgalrs (/braɪtˈɡælˈeːrɛz/)[1] 07:46, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
