Reception

[edit]

I think this section might need a little editing. it starts with " At the time of its release" but then goes on to list reviews from rotten tomatoes and rpgamer sites that weren't even around at the time of Suikoden's western release. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.34.113.86 (talk) 23:03, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Manga references?

[edit]

Interestingly enough the warrior Anji whose star is the Tenken and found in the pirate's fortress would appear to be a reference to the anime Kenshin, particularly it would appear to be a reference to the Juppongatana, who are the villains in the Kyoto arc. Anji being the fallen monk, The Tenken being the nickname of Soujiro Seta. Then again, maybe it's just a co-incidence and I'm going crazy. :)

Anji of Rurouni Kenshin and Anji of Suikoden are unrelated, apart from sharing the same name. -- Olorin780

Tir

[edit]

This hero is not named Tir. The book Hero is named Tir. This is a video game where the Hero is named by the player.

Rockhound 05:00, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'll excuse your ignorance. The novel is based on the video game. In the novel, they assigned the protagonist the name "Tir", as it's far more convenient to refer to him by an actual name rather than "McDohl", as he is not the only McDohl. The names for the protagonists of the Suikoden games are always gotten from the novels, and are generally what the majority of the people use. Just like "Riou" for the hero of Suikoden 2, and "Lazlo" for the hero of Suikoden IV. They are widely accepted. Like it or not. It's far more convenient for the gamers to use it as well. --McDohl 11:13, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll excuse your insult. The point stands that this is a videogame, where the main character is given a name by the player. It's an act of personalization. Now, had Konami instead given McDohl, or Hero1, or whatever one would wish to refer him as, the name Tir as the character from the novel had, this would be a moot point. As it stands, they did not, and so the character is a nameless Hero. As far as gamers referring to him as "Tir", he is also referred to as McDohl, being "THE McDohl" in some circles, since the only other family members to play a part in the video game are named. Rockhound 15:47, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed the name "Tir" is not the canonical name of the hero it's just the accepted name in the fanbase. RBlowes 22:39, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I say, get rid of that Tir nonesense. This is Wikipedia, not some yaoi fanfic. --70.52.93.5 (talk) 00:26, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Screenshot

[edit]

I'm not completely sure, but I am relatively certain that the screen shot used is from Suikoden 2.

It's from Suikoden 1. It shows the Suikoden 1 Hero Mark272 10:13, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't it be moved to the gameplay section?--Sean.ridgeley 21:39, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

References et al

[edit]

I've gone over this article editing the entire thing really, switching things around (there were three or four mentions of 108 characters in various sections, that made it look dis-jointed) and have added references, in terms of reviews for the reception section and generally the entire thing since two or three of the reviews cover those sections quite well. Incidently, I believe only the CNET and Gamespot one would have importance (and IGN I suppose) but the other two have been used before else-where and I thought I'd use them as well, since it's pretty tricky to find anything on Suikoden outside of the fan-sites and of course, because attention has shifted to Suikoden 5 and Tactics. Hopefully my edits have contributed in some form there, but feel free to leave me a message if I've done anything wrong or if there's any way I can contribute some more for this article, cheers. Holy run-on sentences.--Sean.ridgeley 21:40, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Heh sorry =( RBlowes 23:52, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm keeping this article at Start-Class, Low-Importance. This article's getting along nicely, and I don't think it would take an unreasonable amount of time to get it to B-class. Here are some ideas to improve it!

  • The article needs many more refs. See WP:CITE.
  • Minor spelling, punctuational and grammatical points. I fixed a couple, but look out for others.
  • Gameplay section ought to be trimmed down a bit so it doesn't sound too much like a game guide:
  • Paragraph 3 goes into a little too much detail for my liking. Simply note briefly that different abilities affect where a character can stand in formation (or whatever is true - I found the text here wasn't entirely clear).
  • The paragraph on Runes: as somebody who has never played the game I do not find the examples given useful. A general rule-of-thumb when writing a gameplay section is that if it isn't useful to someone who doesn't intend to play the game, don't include it.
  • I do not find anything after the second sentence in the final paragraph useful for the same reasons.
  • The article has a few short paragraphs. The choppiness this creates makes it less pleasant to read. Either expand the paragraphs or merge a couple together.
  • Characters section requires expansion. As it links to another article you only need a summary of what the article says, but the current sentence is inadequate.
  • Trivia sections should be merged into the rest of the article, as I have done. Note that the "character" section still requires expansion.
  • Characters should be a subsection of a "story" section along with the "plot" section.
  • The "Audio" section is very short. If there isn't enough material to expand it to a length which justifies its own section, then merge it with the "Reception" section, as it cites reviews and only describes the critical reception to it.
  • You might want to consider adding a "development" section, charting the game's progress through the development cycle (announcement of the game, when it went gold, any delays etc).
  • The screenshot:length ratio is low. Consider adding one or two more screenshots.

A few more citations, screenshots and good shortening and lengthening in the right places would earn you a B. UnaLaguna 21:28, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Requested Move

[edit]

Now that Suikoden has been moved to Suikoden (series) for the sake of consistency across video game articles (See Phantasy Star and Phantasy Star (series) as an example), it is open for this article to be moved there. The request has already been submitted to WP:RM, as it requires administrative intervention. Godheval (talk) 00:20, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

US box art

[edit]

Even if it's not going to be used in the info section, it should be mentioned/shown somewhere, just for how utterly unpopular that change was. It's definitely notable.21:13, 26 November 2016 (UTC)21:13, 26 November 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.51.193.141 (talk)

It's not clear what you're referring to, and searching the article history I can find neither an info section nor any mention of box art. In any case, we need a supporting reference or we can't add in whatever it is you're talking about.--Martin IIIa (talk) 15:30, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
