Talk:List of retro style video game consoles
Hyperkin Consle
[edit]Should we add Hyperkin Consle on here?Doremon764 (talk) 04:42, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
I'd say we should add their consoles as the definition for retro style condoles of this article applies to them: "[...] many [retro style consoles] [...] support the cartridges of older video game systems [...]".-- Maxeto0910 (talk) 19:33, 25 July 2020 (UTC)
Intellivision Amico
[edit]This console needs to be removed from this list as it is not a retro console and is playing new games developed specifically for it. There is no sourcing to suggest this is a retro console and we need to wait and see what the final product is to determine where it should be placed -Respectfully Loch TheRealLochNess (talk) 02:44, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
The Evercade VS runs it's own exclusive games as well, but also listed on the list. Most are listed on this page because the market of Nostalgia. Doremon764 (talk) 02:48, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
While the Evercade has a couple of exclusives, the majority of its library are licensed 2nd/3rd/4th generation console and arcade games, so that is why it is included. 106.69.130.42 (talk) 03:27, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
The Evercade VS may have a few exclusive games, though you would have to point them out, the vast majority are the original ROMs with a patch for the control button arrangement difference. Even if there are exclusive games, they are "homebrews" made to work with the pre-2000 consoles BIOS/OS emulation or FPGA. The Amico has all newly programmed games or ports of recent games, like other modern consoles. It is not basically an emulator or set of emulators like almost every other entry on this retro-console list. What it is is a microconsole, like the Ouya, Air Console, Android and Apple devices for home video gaming, that downloads all its new games from the internet and uses smart phone technology for the processor.Daltonsatom (talk) 21:19, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
Change in scope to licensed/unlicensed consoles
[edit]As there is no list for unlicensed consoles, I propose changing the scope of the article to also encompass them. If necessary, they can be specifically marked as unlicensed to differentiate them from licensed ones, but I see no encyclopedic reason why they should be excluded. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 18:57, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
- I have no objection. The article is pretty small in size, so I don't see any reason to limit it on those grounds, assuming there aren't a million unlicensed ones to add or something. Sergecross73 msg me 19:10, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
- I think the issue with including unlicensed products is that there are literally hundreds of them and it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to draw the line between what would qualify for the list and what wouldn't. There are a very large number of these devices that have been built for emulation, some of high quality but many with questionable quality (putting aside the legalities as they often also include illegal roms). I think limiting the list to officially licensed products (or products that are designed to play original cartridges/discs) keeps the size of the list manageable. 2001:44B8:3111:4004:D463:96C9:EE7D:920C (talk) 23:32, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
- At a base level, I think anything that gets a significant mention in a reliable source (or sources) should qualify for the list. If something just has a website and would otherwise be WP:OR, it shouldn't be there. If you want to be strict about it, I'd be fine with it being limited to anything that has an article, but that wouldn't match up with the criteria for the licensed ones. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 23:35, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
- Can someone help me understand the difference between the Hyperkin/Analogue products listed, and the "unlicensed products" like the Anbernic RG351 which are supposedly out of scope? I thought Hyperkin/Analogue prodcuts were not licensed. TarkusABtalk/contrib 05:28, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- I'm not sure either. The Retron 5 is listed here and yet it is an unlicensed console that can only play emulated games rather than original cartridges. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 06:03, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- I think a better solution would be to split the list between List of dedicated video game consoles (Atari Flashbacks, SNES Mini, etc.) and List of video game console clones (Retron, etc.). The two devices are quite different. Being of "retro style" is an ambiguous quality. And generally speaking, being official or not should not matter on these lists, so long as its reliably sourced and the unofficial ones are designated as such somehow. - The thing is, the Anbernic is kind of a clone in that it's similar to the GBA, but not fully a clone since it has different specs and features. It's a multipurpose gaming device, so it wouldn't really fall under clones were an article moved there. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 09:31, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Playdate
[edit]Should the Playdate be added to this list? While it doesn't play retro games as such (its library consists of completely original games), its design and games are very much in the style of and are inspired by retro handhelds like the Game Boy. Understandable if we want to keep the list to devices that actually play retro games, just wanted to ask the question. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:44B8:3111:4004:499E:CBA1:81F1:CC43 (talk) 01:58, 21 June 2022 (UTC)
