Division of lists

[edit]

Not to be confused with List of denaturalized former citizens of the United States. Rms125a@hotmail.com (talk) 02:30, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the division between these two lists, please see Talk:List of denaturalized former citizens of the United_States#Inclusion of people who voluntarily gave up US citizenship. Thanks, quant18 (talk) 19:29, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It appears to me that the list includes both people who have renlinquished US nationality and those who have renounced it. Technically, they are two distinct processes, though the result is typically the same. If you relinquish your US nationality the effective date of loss of nationality is when you relinquished it by commmitting the expatriating act. If you renounce, it is when you formalize the process.Cospelero (talk) 09:28, 22 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This would be a helpful distinction to make in the page. Someone naturalizing in another country, renouncing their US nationality before another government, or destroying their US passport does not in itself constitute a loss of US nationality/citizenship. Even if someone is naturalized in a country that claims to require them to renounce other nationalities first, that in itself is not hard evidence that a loss of US nationality really occurred. If their name does not appear in the Federal Register (Quarterly Publication of Individuals Who Have Chosen to Expatriate) and/or they cannot produce a DS-4083 form (Certificate of Loss of Nationality of the United States), then it's likely they still hold US nationality and have possibly just destroyed, discarded, or set aside their US passport with no intention of returning to the US. They could still obtain a new US passport by simply applying for one though. US nationals are required by law to use their US passports when entering/leaving the US, so someone who renounced US nationality before another government without formally renouncing before the US (getting a DS-4083) and continued to travel in/out of the US on a US passport would still be a US national/citizen. ---- SJy2iI83VJ (talk) 19:43, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Potential entries

[edit]

Some potential entries I have not been able to verify in reliable sources:

If anyone else finds sources could they add them in? Thanks, quant18 (talk) 19:29, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Anybody know how far along his renunciation is (i.e. far enough to add him to the list)? Clarityfiend (talk) 04:14, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up. Since his name is in the Federal Register, that means it's a done deal. I added him to the list. Cheers, quant18 (talk) 04:27, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Did she or didn't she renounce her U.S. citizenship to become Princess Grace of Monaco? Quis separabit? 20:59, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

She definitely didn't renounce her citizenship at the time by virtue of the marriage; e.g. see [1] (where the U.S. State Department ruled that her newborn was a U.S. citizen). She might have done it later, though. I moved all these misreported ones like Fischer and Marc Rich to a separate section where it's easier to lay out all the details of their cases. Cheers, quant18 (talk) 02:00, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Princess Grace of Monaco was a U.S. Citizen as determined by the State Department at the time of her death. It was also determined that her son Albert was also a U.S. Citizen. Prince Albert II is the Soverign Prince of Monaco and he is also a United States Citizen which gives rise to a possible conflict of interest. Kasanders (talk) 00:11, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Boris Johnson

[edit]

Why is Boris Johnson on this list? He has talked about renouncing his citizenship, but his own entry states that he did not go through with it. Grover cleveland (talk) 17:55, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops. I see he is actually in the "misreported" list. Grover cleveland (talk) 17:57, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A number column

[edit]

Because the list is quite long now, a number column is very helpful for readers and editors too. Is that OK to add such a column? Thanks, New worl (talk) 11:38, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can the numbering be generated automatically? (Otherwise this seems like it would be a giant pain for editors having to update all the numbers when you insert a new name in the middle of the list, which happens quite frequently.) quant18 (talk) 12:48, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am not an IT person. From my limited experience, it is created manually. I am not sure if wiki has such an auto created number list. I am not sure where I could ask such questions. But I will keep in mind about the questions in case I come across answers. New worl (talk) 14:03, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
After a trip read through some of the archives at Help talk:Table and Help talk:Sorting, it seems there's no automatic way, and the best solution they can suggest is not very good. From Help:Sorting#Maintaining tables sorted by rank:
One way to resort a table that has been updated is to copy the table (in wiki markup), remove the table code ("|-", etc.), replace the cell separation code ("||") with Tab characters using Notepad (built-in with Windows) or TextEdit (built-in with OS X) and paste the table data into Excel or Google Docs (free of charge). Type "1" and "2" in the first two rows of the rank column, select both cells and then fill out the rest by dragging down the little blue square on the lower-right corner of the second cell. Copy the table from the spreadsheet and paste it into a text editor. Finally, add back the wiki table code with the text editor.

A fun comparison. Identical passages are in bold text; highly similar passages are in bold italics. quant18 (talk) 03:27, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This Wikipedia article as of 10 August Forbes article on 11 August
Earl Tupper; Businessperson; Jus soli; Costa Rica; Tupper was born in Berlin, New Hampshire, and founded the Tupperware company in 1938. In 1958, shortly after selling his company and divorcing his wife, he bought an island off Costa Rica and renounced his U.S. citizenship to avoid taxes. It’s been widely speculated that most citizens on the list are leaving for tax reasons. That notion has been bolstered by the prior moves of such big names as Edward Tupper (yes, the founder of Tupperware), who bought an island off of Costa Rica to avoid taxes.
Key of reasons: (Blue) To take or run for a position in a foreign government. Spouses of foreign heads of state are included in this category. (Red) To naturalize as a citizen of a foreign country, or to retain citizenship in a foreign country disallowing dual citizenship. (Green) To protest U.S. policies or actions … Andreas Papandreou; Politician; Naturalized; Greece; A naturalized U.S. citizen, he renounced in 1964 to run in the Greek legislative election, 1964, and went on to become the Prime Minister of Greece. It’s worth noting, however, that not everyone who makes the list is fleeing for tax reasons. You can renounce your U.S. citizenship for a number of reasons including running for office in a foreign country (like Andreas Papandreou who went on to become the Prime Minister of Greece) or to retain citizenship in a foreign country that doesn’t allow dual citizenship. You may also opt to give up your citizenship to protest U.S. policies or actions.
Relinquished and then regained citizenship … Elizabeth Taylor; Actor; Jus sanguinis; United Kingdom; Taylor was born in London to American parents in 1932. In October 1965, she signed an oath of renunciation at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, but with the phrase “abjure all allegiance and fidelity to the United States” struck out. State Department officials declared that her renunciation was invalid due to the alteration. Taylor signed another oath without the alteration in October 1966. She applied for U.S. citizenship again in 1977 during then-husband John Warner’s Senate campaign. And while getting your citizenship back after you’ve renounced isn’t easy, it’s not impossible. Movie actress Elizabeth Taylor did it over a period of just over ten years. Taylor was a dual citizen of the U.S. and U.K. by birth. During her first marriage to Sir Richard Burton, she attempted to renounce her citizenship but due to an alteration on the form, her renunciation was declared invalid. She signed another one a year later and that one stuck… However, in 1977, Taylor applied to be U.S. citizen again while married to her sixth husband (seventh marriage since she was married to Burton twice), John Warner.

Should add international taxation as a reason

[edit]

for example: Renunciation of citizenship#Taxation The major of London is mentionjed there to renounce his US citizen ship after being hunted down by the IRS. There were 3,400 renouncers last year, and most are assumed to do so for taxation. This is evident from the sharp increase of the number of denouncers relative to just five years ago, (from <1000 in 2009 to 3,400 in 2014!) Jazi Zilber (talk) 15:09, 13 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
