Wikipedia Help Survey
[edit]Hi there, my name's Peter Coombe and I'm a Wikimedia Community Fellow working on a project to improve Wikipedia's help system. At the moment I'm trying to learn more about how people use and find the current help pages. If you could help by filling out this brief survey about your experiences, I'd be very grateful. It should take less than 10 minutes, and your responses will not be tied to your username in any way.

Hello, Quant18. Thank you for writing up the article Mark Shields (police commissioner). I have nominated this work by you for DYK on Wikipedia's MainPage. You can see the nomination here. Category:People who lost United States citizenship
[edit]I saw this page. A category page is not a place for an article. Yes an article would be place for your work. At a category page it don't belong, and your work is going to be buried aka hard to find unlike a list article....William 23:37, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
BTW, I asked an administrator for an opinion. He agreed[1] with my decision....William 00:59, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
- Well, I have no particular objection. But individual users do not WP:OWN anything in category space and what someone with a "mop and bucket" says does not matter any more than what any other editor in good standing says. So the best place to discuss this is the category talk page — where if you looked you would note there are a number of active discussions at this time which could use more participation. I copied your comment there. quant18 (talk) 02:40, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

[edit]Korean name romanizations
[edit]Hi Quant18,
First of all, thanks for all of your edits to Wikipedia, especially for all of the Korea-related articles you work on.
I'm just wondering about a change you made to an article recently. You changed the McCune–Reischauer romanization for the Korean name article Su-ji from 'Suchi' to 'Suji'. I'm wondering why it is that you did that? According to the guidelines in the McCune–Reischauer article, 'Suchi' is correct. I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong, I'm just curious why you chose to do it this way, and whether I should be doing this when adding romanizations to articles. I can't find anything that says the second syllable of a given name should not be aspirated. Thank you, Rystheguy (talk) 05:37, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your quick response! That makes sense. Much appreciated! Rystheguy (talk) 06:20, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages
[edit]Thank you for your recent articles, including Political offence exception. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. This can help you too, as the WikiProject members will often defend your work from deletion and try to improve it further. Feel free to ask me any questions if you'd like more information. April 2014 Edit of LGBT Rights in North Korea Page
[edit]I came across your edit of the page in 2014 and wondered how you arrived at your interpretation that the KCNA article stated gay marriage "can never be found" in North Korea. I had the same idea and checked the Korean original which would allow for that interpretation. But every interpretation I could find claimed it was referring to homosexuality and not just marriage.
Here for example the Foreign and Commonwealth Office last year when I asked them: http://hrdreport.fco.gov.uk/archive/2014/democratic-peoples-republic-of-korea/index.html
The Chinese and Spanish translations also translated the sentence as meaning no homosexuality would exist in North Korea and I assume the Japanese translation is the same. But possibly translators did not really question what they read.
Did you came up with the interpretation yourself or was there any other source you relied on?
I am currently working on an article dealing with North Korea's online media including translation problems, ambiguous statements etc.
Martin Weiser (talk) 14:51, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Martin Weiser: Yeah, I based my interpretation off the original KCNA statement in Korean, but then when I edited the LGBT rights in North Korea article I messed up and only cited the English version. (And as you seem to have noticed, their English translation skipped the whole "이른바 《법관》의 감투를 쓰고 ..." paragraph). Now that I look back I'm less confident about exactly what "있을수 없고" is referring to.
- I assume the Japanese translation is the same
- FWIW this Japanese-language DailyNK article about the Kirby Report quotes that relevant paragraph also, but I'm not sure whether that's a quote of the KCNA's Japanese version, or whether Daily NK did that translation on their own. (Or did you mean the Japanese version of the Wikipedia article? That doesn't mention the Kirby report at all.) Hope that helps. Cheers, quant18 (talk) 09:46, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
