Hypocrisy in Wikipedia

[edit]

This is my humble request to some of the Wikipedians who maintain this page.(Sitush, Kautilya3 etc..) I don't know if you guys are from Andhra Pradesh or not. Please don't take your long term membership for granted and act like hypocrites. You guys don't decide whether a caste is forward or backward but the government does which conducts survey. You guys don't own Wikipedia. So please stop being hypocrites and listen to others.

Many of the people lost their faith in Wikipedia, because of people like you and they no longer feel they can rely on Wikipedia.

Atleast now revamp the page using the information provided by Andhra Pradesh Government.(It does the survey and decides if the caste is forward or backward not you guys)

And for god's sake, stop relying on the data which is a hundred years old because evolution takes place. The citation provided in this page is based on the survey done in 1921.

List of Forward Castes in Andhra Pradesh in 2016 as per the Government of Andhra Pradesh: http://www.ap.gov.in/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NOTIFICATION-LETTER.pdf

When you guys can rely on Government provided data for the list of backward castes why not for forward castes? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 223.227.104.161 (talk) 07:11, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yellapu caste is actually a synonym to telaga
Yellapu caste is actually a telangana migrated telagas.

POV of Others

[edit]

The author is wrong in this statement ".People of Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vysya are known as Aryas as they have celesitial thread(Jandyamu in Telugu). Though Kamma, Reddy, Velamas and Kapu belongs to Forward caste they do not have celesitial thread(Jandyamu in Telugu) they were not Aryas.". The author may correct based on my views below. In current day circumstances, the brahmin community has fallen down so much from their ideals that they are the Sudras. Now, coming to practicing varna dharma, the sacred thread ceremony for brahmins, kshathriyas and vaishyas are not a privilege but a higher duty imposed on them and they have negative karma if they do not stay with higher morals. Based on the dharma practiced by Kamma, Reddy, Velamas, Kapus etc, they are Vaishyas or Kshatriyas and I have friends in these communities who wear sacred thread. The author's comment on classification of "Arya" is based on the british Aryan-Dravidian theory to divide the Hindu society and create a discord. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.208.210.34 (talk) 20:44, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think some wikipedia admins like Sitush etc, you are not willing to listen to another editor's point of view.

You are also not quoting any proper recognized sources to prove that Kapu/Balija, Reddy, Kamma, Velama communities were Sudhras or belonged to which Varna. Still you seem to be classifying these forward castes as Sudhras without proper, authentic, government sources to prove.

>> Hindu law permits only the higher castes that come under Brahmin, Kshatriya, and Vysya Varnas to wear the sacred thread.

The word 'Hindu law' is not an appropriate one here, as it refers to 'Modern Hindu law' or 'Hindu Personal Law' under the constitution of India. Sacred Thread is Hindu custom, which denotes that one who wear the sacred thread should be pure in his thought, word and deed. The sacred thread reminds a Brahmachari to lead a regulated life with purity in his thought, word and deed. These threads also represent the debt that is owed to the guru, parents and society.

Please refer the following for more on Yajñopavītam (Sacred Thread):

  2. Velama (sudras, Agriculturists, Peasants, Warriors(During british), Landlords)
  3. Reddy (sudras, Politicians, Agriculturists, Peasants, Warriors(During british), Landlords)
  4. Kapu/Balija/Telaga/Naidu (sudras, Agriculturists, Peasants, Warriors(During british), Landlords)

This topic is about the Forward Castes of Andhra Pradesh and not about the Varnas of Hinduism, what is the need to add 'Sudra to all above 4 categories. I visited this page sometime back, some of the above castes were classified as Kings too. It was removed by some one and Warriors is modified to Warriors(During british). I would like to make it clear:

  1. Any one who knows history of Andhra knows that at least some of the above four castes, were kings. King doesn't mean Kshatriya.
  2. The above castes were definitely the warriors for Rani Rudramadevi and Sri Krishnadeva Raya and much before the British. They have not worked with the British Army in India.

On the whole this edit shows the height of the immaturity of the EDITOR on the subject of Andhra or Telugu history. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sasireddy (talkcontribs) 19:00, 23 January 2011 (UTC) Sasireddy 19:31, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reddys, Kammas, Velamas and Kapus are the powerful castes in Andhra Pradesh because of their land holding, their education and their business. For that matter every caste in SUDRA are also progressing under the democratic constitution of India.
By adding the VARNA of a caste and branding them as LOWER CASTE, one can see the hate towards prospering castes of SUDRA.
What is the standard to prove the SUDRA varna are lower castes? and rest of the VARNAS are upper castes? practicing "UN-TOUCHABILITY" towards the most deprived castes of Hindu society by the so called 3 upper varnas?
As long as this narrow mindedness continues, India can never dream of being the most sophisticated civilization in the modern world. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sasireddy (talkcontribs) 19:31, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Forward class/caste section

[edit]

I have removed the Forward class section. It is almost impossible to verify this except by deduction, which we are [[WP:OR|not allowed to do. It is generally recognised that there is no list of forward classes and that the presumption is that a community is Forward if it does not appears in the OBC/ST/SC etc lists, which would require a fairly massive amount of original research and synthesis on our part. Furthermore, the section appeared to be trying to assert the classification based on varna and that, too, is not acceptable. In fact, it is plain wrong: there are plenty of kshatriya communities, for example, in India that are listed as OBCs.

The entire article is a mess and desperately needs better sourcing & a copyedit, but I do not have the time to do it justice right now. Hopefully someone else will do. - Sitush (talk) 09:29, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Arbitrary heading

[edit]

As per Government of India laws, the word Sudhra must not be used to degrade any caste. Wikipedia can be taken to court in India with possible penalties if the word Sudhra is used to degrade any caste.

Government of India has made it mandatory in 1950 itself not to classify Hindu castes using the Varna system such as Kshtriya, Brahmin, Vysya and Sudhra which is controversial classification of castes.

However here is Wikipedia some Editors, seem to be freely using the ancient Varna system (which was created during medieval times and before that) to classify Hindu castes now in 21st century Internet Age. I would request the Super Editors and Owners of Wikipedia to remove mention of Varna system to classify Hindu castes, as it is not only controversial but also breaks the Laws of Government of India. Never mention the word Sudhra or any classification under the ancient Varna system in any caste article in Wikipedia, otherwise Wikipedia could be taken to court in India.

Is Agnikulakshatriya belong to pure fisherman community?

[edit]

No. There are many who are not fishing as their livelihood. There are farmers, artisans, ship builders, poojaris etc., for the last five generations. The water transportation is under Agnikulakshatriya people until road transport begins. The editor of this article is very immature. No wrong to mention him as an 'infant' in history. WE DON'T TOLERATE SUCH DISCRIMINATION. 117.197.227.81 (talk) 17:23, 17 October 2013 (UTC)విక్రమ్[reply]

Respected విక్రమ్, Yes,Government of Andhra Pradesh classified their Occupation as fishing. Agnikulakshatriya,Palli,Vadabalija, besthaJalari,Gangavar,Gangaputra,Goondla, Vanyakulakshatriya(Vennakapu, vannereddi, pallikapu, pallireddi, neyyala & pattapu) these are fishermen communities classified by Government of Andhra Pradesh.Achieving Jobs & doing businesses and also different occupations in order to achieve money to improve economical status is not difficult for that castes because of being in Backward Castes in Democracy.

Respected విక్రమ్, Your opinion is immaterial, only truth is important & can't be changed. You said "Poojaris",that indicates your lack of knowledge, that no one will accept castes of Shudra varna to be as Poojaris. These Pallis & Vanniyars in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu changed their caste names in 1931 census due to their successful politicking in order to achieve higher status.Vanniyars/Pallis are agricultural labourers in Tamil Nadu & fishermen in Andhra Pradesh written in many books. In fact "Vanniyar" is not only the caste name.It is the name of the title used by many castes in history. It is also the surname of "Thevars" caste in Tamil Nadu. But these Vanniyar Caste people are trying to misinterpret that wherever "Vanniyar" word appears in history they are adding it to their caste history.Even these Vanniyakula Kshatriya/Agnikula Kshatriya(Vanniyar/Pallis) castes are claiming that these are descendants of Pallava Dynasty by making fraud theories. It is their mere foolishness because Pallavas are Kshatriyas and they are not Agnivanshi Kshatriyas even.Pallava Dynasty claim their ancestry to the descendance of Suryavanshi Kshatriya Dynasty of Ikshvakus.

Vandalism by IPs & POV pushing by interpreting false statements

[edit]

"182.66.37.52" & many other IPs are vandalising the articles by removing the overseas development link and also the link related to Backward castes list & their occupations by State Government of Andhra Pradesh.I presume that the IP i have mentioned is from Kapu caste and he is interpreting false statements. Please know that there are seven forward castes that: 1.Brahmin 2.Kshatriya 3.Vaishya 4.Kamma 5.Reddy 6.Velama 7.Kapu according to Andhra Pradesh Government. Here,Kamma,Kapu,Velama & Reddy belong to Shudra varna. As there is no need to mention their varna i.e. shudra, but people from different IPs are misinterpreting them as Kshatriyas & removing Brahmins,Kshatriyas & vaishyas. As the truth is Government of Andhra Pradesh mentions different sects of Brahmins as "Brahmin", "Rajus/Kshatriya Rajus" as "Kshatriya" and "Arya Vaisya/Komati" caste as "Vaishya".

I request those people that it would be fair if those people from dynamic IPs further don't vandalise this "Telugu Castes" page.
I request even Wikipedia to protect this Telugu castes page.Thank You.

Redirect?

[edit]

Any chance of us simply redirecting this article to Telugu people? No merge, just a redirect.

Lists of this type are a constant source of unverifiable claims and require repeated re-checking of the primary sources that are given. Since that primary source is freely available on the web, we are not actually adding anything useful here. In addition, the source is of dubious merit, as has been discussed on numerous occasions. It probably doesn't even relate entirely to "Telugu castes" in any accepted ethnic sense because there are non-native communities in whatever the vaguely-defined "Telugu" area may be and they, too, are entitled to support under the reservation system.

Basically, this article as titled is WP:OR, despite appearances. - Sitush (talk) 11:34, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A quick check (yet again) reveals that our list does not even match the source. For starters, as of today there are 111 listed in the source but only 110 in the article. - Sitush (talk) 11:38, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have now fixed the list again. The numerical difference relates to deleted entries in the source (ie: communities who were once thus classified but have since been reclassified). - Sitush (talk) 11:57, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Sitush: I've moved it to another naming, as there are not any phrasing but it is just a list.--Vin09 (talk) 11:50, 11 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

About Telugu Castes page:

[edit]

To @Sitush:,

  • Your personal opinion is immaterial, according to government source the caste name is "Kshatriya" but not rajus.Government mentions "rajus" by the name of "Kshatriya" and nowhere "Raju" term is used by the Government records, overseas records etc."Rajus" is the word used for mentioning the specific caste, but the official term in Andhra Pradesh is "Kshatriya" but not "rajus".Then about Rajus caste, they are forward caste in Andhra Pradesh clearly mentioned in 43rd page in the overseas source by the example of a Congress leader in Gudiada in Vizianagaram, after all are you a fool ? why you don't understand,if wikipedia is your website & you feel like you own it, then delete "Kshatriya" and mention as Raju in forward castes list in that page. Also Reddy caste is missing in that list which is also a forward caste in Andhra Pradesh."Imposing personal opinions on articles & Vandalizing articles", these are the acts which will be done only by cold blooded bastards.Don't act like a cunning culprit.I hope you understand.
You fool!!! Some sects of Kshatriyas & Vaishyas, migrated from North India & settled in South India several hundreds of years ago i.e. < 500 A.D. which were written in many books & also accepted by historians.Kshatriyas in India are Rajputs & Rajus & six other castes, in all eight communities stated by Kumar Suresh Singh.Your consensus that "Kshatriyas & Vaishyas never existed in South India" is nothing but an agreement of several poisonous minds just for vandalizing articles & suppressing the truth and misguiding people. You & your dogs(admins who are your partners in vandalizing) are the ones who create consensus and are day by day spoiling the reputation of wikipedia.
Go to hell you culprits...

Telaga Caste

Telaga is a Community of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, concentrated primarily in the Coastal Areas of Andhra. The Telagas are Agriculturists by Profession and have been Fuedal landlords. Origins The Origin of the Telagas can be traced back to the Western Chalukyan Expansion into Andhra region which happened in the 6th century A.D. Telagas are the most ancient Warrior/Agricultural clans of the Deccan and South India who are specialised in warfare.

The term Telaga was a derivation of the word Telingana.Andhra was referred to as Telingana in the ancient texts as it was the area that had three major Shivinsa-Aramas, thus was called Tri-Linga', and the people living there were called Telugus and the language spoken by the people there was called Telugu.

The Telagas have served as Nayakulu (Governors),commanders and vassals of the Western Chalukya rulers under Pulakesin. These commanders were also called Telugu Nayakulu from which the community name might also might have been derived Telaga.

They formed the bulwark of Ancient armies of the Deccan and South India like Cholas,Pallavas,Chalukyas,Kakatiyas etc. They seem to have a connection with the Eastern Chalukyas.

The Vassals of Chalukyas entered into Matrimonial Alliances and ultimately established the Chalukya- Chola Dynasity. Etukuri Balaramamurthy and Colin McKenzie in fact mentione that these Telagas or Kapu communnity are the Descendants of these were these Telugu Cholas.

Telugu Cholas The Telugu Cholas rules for over Four Centuries the various regions of Andhra.

Important ruling Clans were

Velanati Choluluof Palnadu War who supported Bramha Naidu in his war against the Nalagam Raju.

Renati Cholas

Konidena Cholas

Nannuru Cholas

Nellore Chola Kings

After the fall of the Easten Chalukyan kingdoms and the Velanati Cholas. The Telagas had to serve under the Kakateeyas as Vassals and accept their Suzzienarity.Under the new rulers they were given the title Nayaka/Nayakudu and played a major role in shaping the history of modern Andhra.

After the fall of the Kakateeyas the Telagas under Kaapaya Nayaka and Prolaya Nayaka led the battle against the invading Bahamanis by combining forces with the Reddy,Velama and Balija Nayaks and liberated the Andhra Country from Tyrranny nd Destruction.

Telagas had matrimonial Alliances with the Kakateeya and Vijayanagar Rulers.Araveeti Rama Raya the son in law of Krishna Devaraya and the ruler of the last Dynasity of Viajayanagar was a Tealaga. This family was a Eastern Chalukyan Fuedataory called the Arayeti Family which became Araveeti in due cource of time.

With Vijayanagara coming into power the Telagas served under the new rulers and were Dispatched off to Protect the farflung regions of the empire to Tamil Nadu and were posted as Nayaks and took up Administration as Nayaks/Nayakers. The most famous Telaga General was Viswanatha Nayaka who started the Madurai Nayak Dynasit. -- Source Penugonda Charitra..

After the fall of the Vijayanagar Empire in the Battle of Talikota large sections of Telagas migrated towards the North and settled down in their Native Country the Godavari deltas and took to agriculture. And some of them went further South and settled down in the Tanjavur region and joined the Tanjavur Nayaks Army.

Telagas are known for their bravery and fearlessness aptly put by a famous Telrugu Saying describing the community "Teginche vade Telaga" which means "One who dares is a Telaga".Even now we can find swords, armours and weapons with some of the Telaga families in Rajamundry. All of these people are Vaishnavas and have Sri Venugopala Swami has their family deity.

Another Legendary Instance of Telaga Bravery was exhibited during the Bobbili War fought between the Velama Kingdom and the Vizianagaram kingdom led by Vijayaram raju. When all seemed lost for the Bobbilli Ranga Rayudu the Bobbili King before riding out to war in no mood to submit the honour and the Dignity of the Royal House Ordered all of his commanders to Execute their Families before riding out to meet their fate. Accordingly the Telaga and Velama Commanders and Soldiers Executed their families before proceeding out to war. Viajayaramaraju was laid to rest by a valiant Telaga Commander Miriyala Venkata Rao along with Papa Rayudu. -- Bobbili Charitra

Legend Pulakesin II’s brother, Kubja Vishnu Vardhana, founded the Eastern Chalukya Empire after he was appointed Viceroy of Vengi and gave many of his trusted generals fiefdoms to rule over as his vassals and took up reign as Telaga Nayakulu (Governors). Most of the Telagas are fuedal landlords concentrated mainly in the coastal areas of Andhra.

Kapu and sub-castes should be grouped together

[edit]

In Forward classes, Kapu and its sub-castes Telaga and Balija which fall under General Category (OC or FC) are to be grouped together.

Sources

Sources for the same are as follows:

1. S. Gajrani groups them as a single category "Kapus"[1] while mentioning that there are various sub-castes within the Kapu category, such as Telaga, Balija, Munnuru Kapu, Ontari, etc. (p. 29). Among this, Munnuru Kapus are under the OBC category[2] while Kapu, Telaga, Balija, and Ontari are under General Category.[3][4]

2. Christophe Jaffrelot and Sanjay Kumar also mention a single category called "Kapu" in their caste composition table for Andhra Pradesh (Table 9.1, p. 279)[5] On the same page, they clarify that Kapus are also known under different names such as Telaga, Naidu, Balija, Munnuru Kapu. In the footnote on the same page, they cite G. Ram Reddy (1989) who mentions that Kapus are considered forward in coastal Andhra districts and in most districts of Rayalaseema. Furthermore, it is mentioned on page 300, that "Munnuru Kapus" of Telangana and "Turpu Kapus" of Srikakulam and Vizianagaram are termed as "Backward Class" and that in other parts of coastal Andhra, they are considered a "Forward Caste".

3. Forward Caste Kapus are also mentioned together in media sources as either "Kapu and its sub-castes Balija, Telaga and Ontari" or as "Kapu, Balija, Telaga, Ontari".[6][7][8]

4. The Government of Andhra Pradesh groups them together and also has established corporations and laws where the Government Orders (G.O.) mention them as "Kapu, Telaga, Balija, Ontari".[9][10][11][12][13][14][15]

As has been established from various sources viz. a) scholarly opinion, b) media and c) Government Orders "Forward Class" Kapus are generally grouped together in all mentions of Andhra castes. When Christophe Jaffrelot and Sanjay Kumar in the above source mention the list of "Forward Class" Andhra communities and list Kapus among them, they contextualize by mentioning that it includes Kapu sub-castes like Telaga, Balija, and Ontari. It is also pertinent to note that none of the citations mention Balija separately. The same convention is followed by other scholars and sources as well.

In lieu of the above information, I propose that the Forward Classes section of the article be edited as either:
a) Kapu (Telaga, Balija, Ontari) or
b) Kapu, Telaga, Balija or Kapu/Telaga/Balija or
c) Kapu and its sub-castes Telaga, Balija, and Ontari or
d) Include the above information as a note to the Kapu entry or some variant of the above to give clarity to the readers.

This is also important in the sense that Kapus are considered the largest community in Andhra Pradesh whose numbers are variedly estimated as numbering between 15 and 28 percent. (From the sources mentioned above).

Is "Ontari" not included among forward castes?
Also, please identify one or two high quality sources and give their WP:Full citations. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 11:50, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ontaris are also in Forward Caste list. They are mentioned in all the above sources. They are too few in number and they don't have a separate wiki page (Ontari in the search bar redirects to Kapu page. Hence they are sometimes omitted. Please let me know what you mean by "Full Citation". The page you have mentioned is broken. The above sources mention which castes come under Forward castes and which don't. Christophe Jaffrelot and Sanjay Kumar clearly mention that. The same is also mentioned in the various media articles that I have cited. All of them clearly mention that "Kapu, Balija, Telaga, Ontari" don't have access to any affirmative action programs (a marker of "General Category" or "Forward Caste") and are now asking for reservations or financial assistance of some kind. (I have fixed the WP:Full citation link.) I know that our list is based on 1921 census. If you have access to a more recent list, you are welcome to bring it up and we can look at it. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 21:57, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
