Requested move
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: No consensus to move. To be honest this discussion, which is quite old now, has become confused. There are two possible targets mentioned in the nom, whcich means some are arguing for or against only the first proposal (Ray Lau Kong-wah), while others may support or oppose both. Then there's the issue of the possibly canvassed !votes. I suggest that there is no clear mandate to move this to either of the proposed titles on the discussion below. There may be feelings that Ray Lau is appropriate. If so that should be proposed as a separate standalone move request to gauge opinion for that specifically. Lau Kong-wah → Ray Lau Kong-wah – Or Ray Lau (currently a disambiguation page a redirect to this article)? Current title and his English name are commonly used, according to Bing News search. I prefer HK-style naming or "Ray". George Ho (talk) 02:54, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
- Support Ray Lau Kong-wah as local HK-style, HK is an English-speaking locality ahd has a local style of names. -- 67.70.35.44 (talk) 06:01, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose Same reason as with other ones you moved or trying to move, we need to avoid using long titles such as 'Ray Lau Kong-wah' per WP:TITLE, it should be either 'Ray Lau (politician)' or just 'Lau Kong-wah', per WP:NC-ZH. TheAvatar (discuss–?)
- Seventy-three articles use Ray Lau; more than one hundred articles use Lau Kong-wah. Still, "Ray Lau" is easier to search for English-speaking citizens. --George Ho (talk) 00:40, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- Keep it same at Lau Kong-wah, or change to just Ray Lau. TheAvatar (discuss–?) 17:52, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- Choose one then. --George Ho (talk) 19:23, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

- Support - HK convention and per 67.70.35.44 and nom. In ictu oculi (talk) 23:14, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
- No such convention, stop making it up. TheAvatar (discuss–?) 17:50, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- You're just denying it exists. The Chinese University of Hong Kong [1] and the British Colonial Government of Hong Kong [2] prior to the rise of the commonly used Internet; as well as English-language Hong Kong newspapers uses this convention. -- 67.70.35.44 (talk) 05:22, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

- Oppose. If one wants to prove that there is some kind established convention of naming in Hong Kong, I would like to see a source for it. At the moment, all I see is people basing it on random inconsistent usage in sources. Thus, use the common name as in the English name or transliterated Chinese name, and not some kind of self-invention of English-Chinese blend. --Cold Season (talk) 19:02, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- @Tavatar, Cold Season: Please choose either transliterated Chinese name or English name. Such long-term indecisiveness combined with opposition to HK naming style is unproductive and doesn't prevent more requested moves. You see Ohconfucious opposing inclusion of "Ray"? That's decisive for you, so learn from that. --George Ho (talk) 23:38, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
- What my choice is about the transliterated Chinese name or English name is irrelevant, go by what's common in sources. My statement remains the same, that is, oppose a move. --Cold Season (talk) 22:22, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
- All right; which is more common, User:Cold Season? --George Ho (talk) 08:10, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

- oppose adoption of this as a convention that is so local it confuses. anyway, he is definitely not better known as "ray", but as "mr rubbish bin". -- Ohc ¡digame! 23:32, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

- Oppose. A title should not be an exhaustive list of all names a subject has ever been known by. Typically, HK politicians articles use the format of Engrish first name followed by surname or surname plus Chinese given name, not a combination (see other entries at Category:Members of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong). Redirects will get readers where they want to go. — AjaxSmack 02:12, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
