What is Marian?

I've only watched part of this series so far, but I'm a little confused about Marian's status. Marian is clearly at least a crossdresser, which regardless of some people's definitions I would not ever equate with transsexuality on account of the fact that a number of crossdressers say they're one thing but dress like the other for one reason or another, something clearly different from people who say they were assigned one thing but are really another. Marian says clearly at the start that he's a man, and even yells at the hero "you got a problem with me being a man?", which seems to tell me that even if he thinks he's got a feminine "heart" or "soul", he still identifies as a man and thus is not a transsexual, just a transvestite. He clearly has some ambiguity, such as how he remarks at one point how he wouldn't know whether he's the bride or the groom if he got married, but his statement at the start about his gender seems pretty straightforward.
